ACHIEVING FINANCIAL GOALS

The plans of the diligent lead to profit as surely as haste leads to poverty. Proverbs 21: 5

To "profit" simply means you still have money left after all your expenses are paid. We all like to be profitable, but why is it so hard to get there sometimes? Many of us seem to be perpetually behind financially. And when our troubles result from poor choices we've made, we may not know how to fix our situation or prevent it from happening again.

A case in point: An episode of a recent talk show featured a family that was about $80,000 in debt. They met with a financial counselor, refinanced their house and were able to take $50,000 from their house and pay off quite a bit of debt. Unfortunately, when they came back on the show a year later, they returned with an additional $37,000 on top of their original debt. The financial counselor said that based on these results, this family didn't really want to be debt free - they just wanted to relieve a little pressure. Once some of the pressure was relieved, they were "done" in their minds and went back to spending money.

This scenario plays out in so many people's lives. Yet, never anyone actually say, "I want to get out of debt - and after that I want to rack up more debt!" Sounds crazy, right?

One of the best remedies for financial stress and yo-yo budgeting is rooted in Proverbs 21: setting financial goals. With goals you are no longer wandering aimlessly but know where you are going and know exactly how far you have to go before arriving.

If you don't have any financial goals yet, you can set aside some time to pray about what goals you want to set and then sit down and write them out. When writing

down your financial goals it's a good idea to include specific time frames for reaching your goals. You may or may not meet those time frames, but at least you'll be able to see how you are doing along the way and adjust as necessary.

If you are married, goal-setting is a great opportunity to sit down with your spouse and communicate about your money and your future dreams and plans. You'll want to make sure you are on the same page or can at least arrive on the same page because if you and your spouse have different goals for the money you share, there will be trouble ahead.

Since everyone's financial situation is different, everyone's goals will be different too. As you pray about this, God will direct you to what areas of your finances need improvement, but to help you get started, consider these ideas:

Create an Emergency Fund: The first thing is creating emergency savings fund. This is important because it can help save you from going into debt when the unexpected occurs. Many Christians sadly assume that God will prevent any catastrophes from occurring in their finances and are very surprised when they do occur. God often gives us the means to set aside money now to take care of future needs. Proverbs 6:6-8 talks about how an ant stores up food in the summer so he will have enough food in the winter when the supply is non-existent.

Some experts suggest somewhere between 3-6 months of living expenses for your emergency fund. That can be quite the big of change, especially if you are struggling to pay your bills. If this is the case, start with a smaller amount, like 1 month or even 2 weeks. Something is better than nothing.

Eliminate (or at least reduce) debt: An ultimate goal should be to pay off all debt. For some, this might take only a few months, but for others it could be a longer and more painful process. If you have a smaller amount of debt, you can make separate goals to pay off specific accounts and an overall goal to be debt free. If you have a larger amount of debt, you might want to set some goals based on a certain percentage or amount of your total debt. For instance, one of your goals may be "We will pay our student loan debt down $5000 this year" or "We will pay off 50% of our current car loan by XX date." Reaching your smaller goals will help give you the motivation to continue onto the larger goals.

Save for a Large Purchase: Maybe you want to buy a car in the near future. Instead of going out and obtaining a loan for a brand new one, maybe your goal can be to save up and pay cash for a car. If that goal is a little far-fetched for you, maybe you can save for a down payment of 25% or 50% of the purchase price.

Give More: For those already giving, set a goal to increase your giving by a certain amount or a higher percentage of your income.

If you aren't currently giving, make a goal to start your giving. Even it may seem like a small amount, but it can make a difference.

Increase Your Net Worth: Your financial net worth is your bottom line for your finances. For those who don't know, your net worth is how much you have in assets minus how much you owe - giving you the amount you really own. If you owe more money that you have in assets, you have a negative net worth. If you have more than you owe, you have a positive net worth.

Setting a goal to increase your net worth can help you stay focused on your bottom line. For instance if you pay off one bill but take out more debt somewhere else, that affects your net worth. If you have a negative net worth, you can set a goal to at least get in the positive. If you already have a positive net worth, set a realistic goal of where you want to be in a year or two or five.

REVIEWING YOUR FINANCIAL GOALS

For all your goals, review them regularly. You can post them on your refrigerator, in your PDA, or wherever is easiest and most convenient for you. When you see your goals often, you are reminded of why you are being disciplined and what your future reward is. And don't worry about choosing the perfect goal. At your goal date you may be just shy or way ahead of your goal. The point is that you are moving in the right direction and you'll eventually get there. Just remember Proverbs 16:3: "Commit to the LORD whatever you do, and your plans will succeed."

PRODUCTIVE LIFE

Have you ever wondered why some people are able to accomplish so much with their lives? What makes them so productive? These days people are very conscious of productivity at all levels. Once a month the government releases a report on the gross national product. It tells us how productive the business and industrials have been. It is an important picture of the national economic health.

Suppose each of us were issued an “individual productivity report” each month. How would ours look? Would it show positive or negative results? Positive or negative? And what do you want to do so that at the end of your life you will be able to say, “I led a productive life. I accomplished what I set out to accomplish?” Have you ever defined what you consider to be a productive life? And more important, do you know God’s definition of a productive, fruitful life? And what does it mean to be a fruitful Christian?

The word “fruit” is used 66 times in New Testament. in John 15:8, Jesus says, “This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples”. The proof that you are a disciple is that you bear fruit. He wants us to be fruitful (productive). Let’s take a look at 3 conditions for fruitfulness that are described in the Bible.

Cultivate Roots - If we want to be fruitful, we must cultivate some roots. Without roots there will be no fruits! Roots are the lifeline of nourishment for the entire plant or tree. Consider a banana tree. It is almost indestructible. You can chop it into pieces, but it will grow back. You can burn it down, but it will grow back. There’s only one way to get rid of a banana tree, that is by uprooting it. The roots are the key to the fruit. In our life, how do we cultivate our root? Psalms 1:2-3 talks about cultivating our root, that is by meditating and studying the word of God. This is how we develop strong spiritual roots that will enable us to produce good fruits.
Eliminate weeds - Weeds can cause fruits never ripens. What are the weed in your life? Weeds are the concerns and interests that sap our time, energy, and money and prevent you from bearing spiritual fruits. Jesus in Luke 8 mentioned 3 kinds of weeds: Weeds of worry, weeds or riches, and weeds of pleasure. These weeds can choke out our spiritual growth and make our priorities of life out of balance. So it’s important for us to eliminate weeds.
Cooperate with God - If you are going to be fruitful Christian, you must cooperate with God’s pruning in your life. Pruning involves cutting off the dead branches and cutting back the living branches both to shape tree to stimulate growth. Most of us think that when God prunes, he cuts off the sinful and the superficial, the deadwood in our lives. He does do that, but also he cuts off stuff that is alive and successful: a good business, satisfying relationship, or even good health. Some of that may get whacked off for greater fruitfulness. He also cuts good things too, in order to make us healthier. It is not always pleasant, but pruning is absolutely essential for spiritual growth.

Friends, God knows what He is doing, and He wants what is best for us. When you follow His process, the harvest and fruits are inevitable.

How Can I Live Above Average?

answer from the Bible that can change your life

God never intended for us to love a mediocre. You are designed for excellence and you are unique.

Everybody wants to be recognized. In fact, not only do we want to be recognized, but we need recognition, for the sake of our own emotional health and image. And most of us have a need in our lives to be different, to be excellent, and to stand out from everybody else.

1 Chronicles 4:9-10 tells us about a man named Jabez. The first nine chapters of the book consists of genealogies, with a listing of names. Right in the middle of those 600 names, God singled out one man for special recognition, Jabez. Why did God single out this man?

The Bible says, “Jabez was more than honorable than his brothers”. His mother had named him, saying, “I gave birth to him in pain”. Jabez is the Hebrew word for “pain”.

He then prayed to God, “Oh that you would bless me and enlarge my territory! Let your hand be with me and keep me from harm so that I will be free from pain”. And God granted his request.

The first secret is that Jabez had a great ambition. He said, “I want God to bless me. I want something big and want to do something significant with me life”. Friends you need a dream. If you don’t, you are drifting. When you stop dreaming, you lose direction. And when you stop setting goals, you stop growing.

God wants you to have a great ambition in life. He made you for a growth and He wants you to stretch and develop and dream.

The second secret that he learned is growing faith. Not only that he had a great ambition, but also had a growing faith. He had a deep trust and belief in God.

The bible gives us some interesting facts about Jabez. There’s no mention of him having any special ability or gift. It doesn’t say that he was wealthy or educated. He was simply common man with an uncommon faith.

So don’t worry about what else you don’t have if you do have faith! God loves to use ordinary people who believe in Him, who are willing to trust Him.

The third secret is Jabez’s prayer life. It was his simple prayer request that got him an honorable mention in the Bible. Lots of people pray without rising above average. What kind of prayer does God answer?

Jabez asked for power greater than his own to accomplish his dream. He prayed, “I want you to bless me”. In other words, he wants God’s power in his life.

The next thing he prayed was God’s presence in his life. “Let your hand be with me”. He realized that if he got more territory, it meant he would have more responsibility. He would have greater demands and more pressure, and he would really need God’s help in his life.

And the last one was God’s protection over his life. Because in those days, the more you had, the bigger you become the target of the enemy.

Friends, if you want to live above average, then have great ambition in life, get a growing faith in God, and establish genuine prayer life.

FINANCIAL VICTORY

We all have concerns about current nation’s unstable economic status. This troubled economy is causing increased financial worries and even fear for many believers. Perhaps we, or even someone we know has already felt the pinch of rising job losses, skyrocketing gas prices, and now even food prices.

People across this country are experiencing struggles to make ends meets and many of them are now in debt severely. When times get hard - especially financially; it is easy to go down wrong path.

During this difficult and challenging times, we should go back to the promise of God. That’s the only thing that can keep our hope alive. There is always good news in God’s promise and His words.

If you read Genesis 26, you will find story about God’s provision to Isaac. In the midst of famine, God spoke to Isaac and reminded him that it is God that’s able to keep him on the right path by reminding Isaac of the promises of prosperity made to His father. And when Isaac obeyed God and His plans with all his heart, God increased him 100-fold, during the famine!

Friends, God wants to remind all of us of God’s great promises today and give us something that will keep us in good condition according to His purpose and great plans.

We don’t have to be the victim of this economic turbulence and victim of lack. We serve a big God, the God of the abundance. And we should have confidence that our God is able to to provide and bless His people. And like Isaac, we can be blessings to others too; AMEN!

Do you remember the story of a widow in the book of 2 Kings? Because of her husband’s indebtedness, her sons were about to be taken away from her and made them slaves. Her situation was very critical and she was in complete financial ruin. But how did she prevail?

She was able to get out of her financial ruin situation by obeying God’s command and putting Him as top priority in life.

Friends, it is very important to acknowledge God if we want to receive His financial breakthrough, why? The book of Deuteronomy 8:18 tells us clearly about how to receive our financial breakthrough. That is by acknowledging God. It says, “You shall remember the LORD your God, for it is He who gives you power to get wealth, that He may establish His covenant which He swore to your fathers, as it is this day”.

If you are experiencing financial issue in your life, it is the time right now to acknowledge God and His power upon your life. The following are the practical steps you can follow to financial victory:

Give to God first before paying your bills (bring your tithing and offering unto Him). “Honor the LORD by giving him your money and the first part of all your crops. Then you will have more grain and grapes than you will ever need." Proverbs 3:9-10

Are we planning and budgeting our financial spending? "Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. What is the first thing you will do? Won't you sit down and figure out how much it will cost and if you have enough money to pay for it? Otherwise, you will start building the tower, but not be able to finish. Then everyone who sees what is happening will laugh at you. They will say, "You started building, but could not finish the job." Luke 14:28-30.

Do we give to the poor? Do not expect your financial blessings to flow if you ignore those less fortunate than you.

Friends, God has given you the power to receive wealth! It is now the time to learn to truly live in His provision and release His abundant blessing for your life.

School of Dream

Message from City Blessing Apostle

We serve a big God who always give big dreams and visions. Any dream that we can accomplish by our own strength is not from God. History tells us that there were great men and women who were willing to dream big dreams and pay the price. Most people want to receive the prize without wanting to pay the price. If you want to be successful in your life, you must begin to enter the "School of Dreams."

People who do not have a dream or vision will have no direction or motivation in their lives. However, after one receives a dream, challenges will flock in. This is when one’s character is developed. Your character is developed not when everything is going your way, but when everything goes the opposite way.

"Character is that quality which causes you to be loyal to a commitment long after the excitement is gone.” (Mark Gorman)

After Joseph received a dream from God, his own brothers hated him. Then he received another dream, and his brothers hated him even more. Then they envied him, betrayed him, and sold him. After the “School of Dreams,” Joseph went through the “School of Testing” where his motives and character were tried. There’s enthusiasm of the moment, or you may go by the feeling of the moment, but it’s going to be character that’s going to keep you loyal to that commitment. When Joseph first received the dream, he was excited, but when he had to pay the price, the excitement began to wane. He had a choice to grow bitter or become better. Joseph chose the latter. You may have been wounded or disappointed in such a way that it cost you your dream. Now is your time to come back!

Four years ago, I remember watching the 2004 Olympics on television. It was held in Athens, the birthplace of the Olympic games. In the final event, the marathon, Vanderlei de Lima of Brazil was leading the race with just three miles to go. It was the strongest run of his career, and spectators were cheering him on. Suddenly, a crazy man burst onto the track and forcefully grabbed de Lima, pulling him into the crowd. Security personnel quickly wrestled the man away, and the shaken de Lima returned to the race lane. But, by then, he had lost his lead to Italy’s Stephano Baldini. While still regaining his composure, de Lima was passed by another runner, but he pressed on toward the goal. Baldini eventually captured the gold medal, and de Lima finished third, winning the bronze.

Professionally, it was his highest disappointment; but personally, it was an amazing achievement. Rarely in Olympic history has the third place finisher been more highly lauded, but everyone knew that Vanderlei de Lima was a winner because he did not quit. And so it is with you who has a dream from God. Difficulties will come, obstacles will block your path, and surprise attacks will threaten to put you out of the race -- but you must never give up!

"Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already been made perfect, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.” (Phi.3:12-14)
