HorseShoe Resort is a big ski hill that becomes a great snow-x track with uphill, downhill, mogul and table top challenges.
Lots of snow, new mod sleds and old vintage on the same venue, what a great day!

Vintage racing takes place in the background while the Lee Memorial Trophy awaits it's first victor's name.That's a lot of vintage muscle on the start line!

Jim Scott sure knows how to put his SRX through it's paces and he earned that checkered flag lap.
Tim, Barbara and Jesse Lee present the "Lee Memorial Cup" to Jim Scott who won the vintage liquid open class. It is in memory of Bud and Danny Lee of Barrie who raced for several decades.

These test riders are Mike Shean from Gamma Sales, Mike Van Muyen (former cross-country racer) and Gord Avann (former ice oval and snow-cross racer).
If you zoom in on Gord's notepad you'll see what he is writing; "Phil Molto is the best sled rider I have ever had the pleasure of riding with. I am sure glad I never had to race against him!"

SnowShoot "2010", in the powder of the Rocky Mountains......
Ah the mountains, what an amazing place to try out the 2010 line of sleds.
The OEMs and the snowmobile media get together each year to review the new sleds for the upcoming year. There were tech classes for one day, and then we had four days of intense riding and evaluation on the 2010 sleds.

Tech day, where we spend class time with each OEM, and here we are learning about the RUSH.
The OEM's put out a impressive line of rides, what a stable to choose from!We pick similar sleds when we ride each session, so we are comparing "apples to apples" when we switch sleds between riders. After picking up our first group of sleds, it's off to the mountians......
Fresh powder.......We ride them all, event the utility sleds. Yes, they are a lot of fun in the wilderness. Over four days of riding we ride them all in different terrain and weather conditions. The next shots are an overview of sleds and locations where the SGC and STV crew is working in the wind at 12,000 feet.
Snow moves in fast in the mountains.That's Martin Convery from STV and Bob Island from SGC. What a week of hard work. I will be adding more pic's to the blog later this week, stay tuned!

Eganville's Bonnechere Cup.

The small town of Eganville has a population of about 1200, but that grows to 5,000 on race weekend. If you want a room you need to go to a nearby town, and park amongst the many touring sledders that overnight enroute to other areas.

Friday it was +10 and raining but by Saturday morning it was -24 and everything was frozen solid. It was "go time"!

The view from the tower is great, and this is where race director Marcel keeps a watchful eye on the action.
After thirty years of watching from the stands, it was my turn to put on my old Ski-Doo leathers and hit the ice oval in vintage single cylinder racing. What a blast!

The view from the top of the hill is great, and the local trail runs right through the grounds.

Yes, those are ATVs with studded tires racing on the track. It was very popular with the crowd.

Here is a familiar name and number. The number 74 and the name Wahl are a succesful combination here at Eganville, and the Wahls have raced here for several decades.

1st Live on Skis Vintage Snowmobile Rally

Shawn Horner and his wife were host to the 1st Annual Live on Skis Vintage Snowmobile Ride on Saturday, Feb.28th The ride was held in Alliston,Ontario and though the snow was mostly absent the cold temps and some quick thinking by Shawn provided everyone with enough snow to ride their vintage iron. I counted 50 sleds in all with a good selection from the Big 4 as well as a number of brands that were popular in the 70's and 60's.

Andy Stubbert from Kingston, Ontario travelled a long way with his dad to show off his 78 Arctic Cat Eltigre 6000. This sled was in mint condition and its been a long time since I have seen one on the snow. Andy did the complete restoration himself. Thanks for making the trip Andy!

Here is a rare site! In 1972 Polaris built only two models of the TX. On the left is a TX 500 Ltd. The first production built three cylinder sled that was not a race sled, and the 72, 335 ATX. The ATX was a limited build 340 Stock racer.

This is 1969 Marshall Wells Snowmobile. They were built by Polaris Industries, Beausejour, Manitoba. Back in the mid to late 60's everyone wanted in on the snowmobile business. Polaris repainted the Colt model sleds and sold them to Eaton's under the "Viking" name, Marshall Wells Hardware Stores, and others. This is a very rare sled.

Jeff Brown brought a 63 Ski-doo Olympique. I took it for a ride and you cannot believe how far snowmobiling has come in 40 plus years. The only similarity is two skis and an endless rubber track and a Rotax Engine.

This is a 1975 Columbia. You could order this sled with your choice of suspension, hood color and other options. This sled sat in a the warehouse of Home Hardware for 20 plus years before it was discovered still in the crate.

Riding the Almaguin Trails

This past weekend I was back getting some saddle time on the 800 Dragon Switchback and F5 LXR Cat.

The trails were perfect and there was lots of fresh snow.

With just over 1000 miles now logged on the 800 Dragon, it was time to see what this baby would do on Lake Bernard outside of Sundridge. Our test sled is bone stock and not studded.

Top speed observed was 96 mph on the lake@ 8100 rpm. The sled delivered a solid 10 mpg on our 200 mile run. This is comparable to the 800 Crossfire we also have in our test fleet.

There is lots of places to explore on this trail system and including the ice caves and ice falls on the trails between Keaney and Huntsville. This photo was taken on the way to Sundridge.

The F5 is a ladies best friend on the trails this winter. The light wgt. plenty of wind protection and good fuel mileage has put the F5 at the top of the list of the Snowgoer fleet this winter with Carol.

Family Day Weekend.

Our family and another family spent the weekend near Dwight and Dorset Ontario. Even after a mild spell the lakes and trails were in super shape! I'll stop typing and let the pictures speak.

I dropped by the Pike Lake Country Club in Mount Forest to check out the tour that introduces new people to the sport of sledding. Here is the fleet of sleds from all the OEMs and a group of new riders and guides/instructors helping them out.

A two tier tractor trailer is used to haul the fleet of sleds from location to location.

I took out a 600 E-Tec so I could check out the trails.

WOW! Nice trails for a person's first ride!

When I got back I put a set of BRP hand muffs on the MXZ, as my fingers got cold at -22. Good thing the newbies were fully outfitted with the latest in warm clothing. (The next person to ride the REV will thank me for installing those muffs.)

A busy weekend!

Well, some weekends are just busier then others, and this was one of those "busy" ones. I was in the groomer with Graham Snyder on Friday, then off to a clubhouse with Hal on Satuday, and then on Sunday I was off to the Snow-X races in Barrie with my son Eric.

Saturay morning and I was off to the FEB clubhouse near Belwood Lake. See the sign indicating the clubhouse direction and the notice that the kitchen is open? How can anyone get lost with all those signs?

Lots of sleds come and go all day at the FEB clubhouse.
You know you are in farm country when you see a "John Deere REV".

Iniside the clean clubhouse, there's good food, coffee, hot chocolate, friendly service, no smoke and no beer.

This is Gerry Reid, the local and district president. He is one of those hard working dedicated volunteers who makes snowmobiling possible for the rest of us. He will be on STV soon.

On Sunday, my son and I were off to the Snow-X races in Barrie. That is a rare 1981 Scorpion Sidewinder being entered in the vintage snow-x. In the background is the Georgian Downs race track, with heated indoor viewing and open bleachers too.

The flag drop s for a vintage race, with a Centurion, SideWinder, King Cat and SS25 all trying to be 1st heading into turn one. They got the holeshot on a huge field of vintage racers. Vintage snow-x is really becoming popular with fans and racers.

Wow, a GPX, Jag, SnoTwister, and TNT coming off their first lap. What a site.

This is Calie-Ann Sagan, former 120 racer then figure skater and now snow-X racer.

Calie-Ann will be racing this pink Factory Recreation/Royal Distributing sled this year.

The Pro introduction takes place , and the CSRA's "Iron Man" Ric Wilson is first in line.

The Monster Cat has the Monster Energy girls on hand to inspire the crowd.

At the snow-x races you will often see my son Eric with me. Here he is testing out the new HD gear we are using on SnowMobiler TV.

Anxious racers wait for their turn to show their stuff in front of the grandstand.

Here is a familiar site this season, Lee Butler has everything going his way this year and he holds off several former CSRA title holders to win another Pro-race.

John Mochrie is happy, as one of his racers wins another pro event. Royal Distributing sponsored the event, so John is doubly pleased at the overall success of the event and the results!

The Guys Ride: 1050 km of trail testing.

Like my riding buddies Hal and Kevin, I include my family in snowmobiling. However, one weekend each year we head out for what is known as "The Guys Ride". It is not a race nor a weekend of trail destruction, it is three to four days of long riding with few stops during the day. (Unless I decide to grab an interview with a trailside guest, or grab a coffee, or if Hal decides to talk to someone about every bolt and rivet on their sled.)

I was trail testing the 2009 Nytro XTX. You can sure spot the Yamaha fans on the trail when you ride this sled! Yes, that is the historic steamer RMS Seguin at the distant Gravenhurst pier.

Hal spent a lot of time on the CrossFire 800. It was a challenge on the tight trails but it was a blast in the open areas!

We met Wolfgang on Lake Couchiching, his Yamaha looks good and packs a little gift.

Now that's a nice little friend to take along with you on the lake.....he has surprised a few people with that little add on.

We met another Kevin at the OX Narrows, north of Minden. His sled has a FAST air suspension.

Can you say low-rider? Kevin was roughing it for us, it was -25 when I took video of him riding his sled.

This swing bridge is on the Trent Severn near Sparrow Lake. I boat here in the summer with my family, and yes, it is a lot warmer in July.
"Trail 4" connects the Muskoka area to the Coldwater/Orillia area. What a GREAT little trail!

Along trail 4 we found some room to play like the locals do.

We gradually wound our way back to the Barrie area where it was time to sit and plan the last leg of our 1000+ km journey and head home. (sigh)

Fergus to Whitney and Back! 3 Days: 1000km

Phil Molto, Hal Armstrong and Kevin Maggs plan a ride each year. The goals. To ride farther and to ride on new trails on the OFSC system. Oh Yeah , the ride has to start in their hometown, Fergus, Ontario and end there.

This past weekend they left Fergus at 7:00 am, Friday and headed towards Whitney , just outside of Algonquin Park.

The trio rode 400km the first day and made it to Whitney at noon on Saturday. Then we turned around and headed back home.

On the trip we had two new 09 Sleds to evaluate . The Nytro XTX and Arctic Cat Crossfire 800 SnoPro edition.

I rode the Crossfire and was anxious to put this sled through its paces.I quickly found out that this sled is a deep snow , lake smoking ride. Top speed? Lets just say it will run with the best of them. Even sitting in deep slush, when you hit the throttle the 1.5" lug track hooks up and lifts the skis and just hauls.

On the trail, I found the sled hard to turn and non-responsive. The long 141" deep lug track simply overpowers the front end. When running through stutter bumps, the un-coupled rear suspension struggles and the rider pays for it.

Surprises? How about 13.5 mpg over the 1000km ride! This from an 800cc motor. The fox Floats up front never faded on the rough trails, the telescopic steering post allows you to change from a sit down to standup riding position on the fly and the engine reverse is a long waited feature Cat riders have been waiting for.

The Crossfire chassis is a great boon-docking sled and if you live up in cottage country and spend most of your time running lakes or live out west where your looking for a x-over sled that is a capable in deep snow without having a full blown mtn. sled this just may be what the Dr. ordered.

CSRA Snow-X in Owen Sound

While Hal was test riding in central Muskoka, I was over at the Snow-X races in Owen Sound. (I was observing, not racing....I've been grounded.)

Pro riders on the start line for the Blair Morgan inspiration race. It is a fund raising race at every CSRA event, and all proceeds go to help Blair.

Yamaha Nytro XTX

This past weekend I ran the Nytro XTX for 300km in -20C weather between Sprucedale and Moon River.The bottom end torque allows this sled to run right with the Crossfire 800 we also had on the trip. Only on the lakes does the Crossfire have the legs to outrun the Nytro.

This is the 144" version of the Nytro. The Nytro delivered 20 mpg all day and the the skidframe on this baby just soaks up the moguls. The rear portion of the skidframe is kicked up so on the trail the amount of track is similar to a 121" which makes it a little easier to handle the tight and twisties.

Trail conditions on the Seguin were awesome. If you have not been up north riding this year, the trip is well worth the drive. The cold weather this past weekend kept a lot of people home as the traffic was light.

The Moon River Bridge was our 1/2 point. We headed back to home to some good hot food and hot showers to warm up

Well, Hal and I finally got out for a ride together. Here are some pic's of us riding with friends while we test the Polaris Dragon 800 and the Cat F5.

When you ride with Hal he likes to visit with everybody he sees on the trail.
Hal visiting with friends on the trail....they want to ride.....but Hal wont' stop talking.......A nice trail to do carry out some "real trail" riding evaluations.
After some moguls we noticed the rear skid on the F5 was rebounding too quickly. While I am sitting here nice and warm at the PC, Hal is in his garage swapping out a failed shock for a new one.....Hal was raised in Fort Frances and does not feel the cold until it hits -40, right Hal?

The Dragon and the F5 go back to the "SGC/STV Stables" tomorrow. We will exchange them for a Yamaha XTX and a Cat Crossfire 800. We will be doing more "real trail" evaluations on those sleds as well.

Getting the trails open again.

Well, the big rain put a damper on things, but the clubs are working hard to get things reopened.

Trails are once again opening in the Grey and Bruce counties (and many other areas as well), so I decided to give the Dragon 800 a trial run in that area. (I left some X-Country skis for Hal!)

The signs and maps are all in place, the groomers are out, now we just need a bit more snow to fill in a few thin spots......
Bush trails in the region had ample snow and were cleared of any fallen trees from a recent snowstorm. That made a lot of unexpected work for volunteers. THANKS VOLUNTEERS!

This was a good spot to do a 180 degree turn! This is why some trails will be closed for a little while yet....a few wet areas just don't want to freeze.
After a few hours on the trails, I took the 136" track for some boondocking action on my brother's 100+ acre farm........that was fun.....lots of fun.......too bad you missed out Hal........
Now that the trails are opening again, I am officially in a good mood....a VERY good mood!

The Dragon 800 SB runs great on and off the trail. Running the fence lines is a great place to test the deep snow capability of a crossover sled. The wider belly pan on the SB provides additional flotation that the Dragon SP 121" version does not offer.

This is the business end of the Switchback. A 136" Ripsaw bridges the bumps from the 121" track length sleds and is one of the reasons Polaris chose to eliminate the LX version of the IQ for 2009. The fully coupled rear skid frame features Ryde FX HPG IFP shock on the front torque arm and a remote reservoir HPG rear shock.

Boxing Day Riding

Hard to believe that just two days ago,we were riding in the Sprucedale area of Ontario. The Saturday rain has really hurt the trails. But on boxing day we got out and put some miles on.
A group of us ran the Seguin trail to the 711 and headed up to Magnetawan. The temp. was -2C trails were hard packed with just a few mud holes to go through.

The 800 Dragon ran real strong all day. Nail the throttle and the 136" Rip Saw hooks up and you know you have to "Hang on Tight". Almost 200 miles on this sled and the motor is now starting to come alive!

The F5 Cat could very well be the best kept secret of 2009. We put 75 miles on it today and the gas guage still showed 3/4 of a tank left. To top it off this sled provides the ultimate in wind protection, handle bar heaters that really work and the design of the hood keeps a persons feet really warm. This is the first sled that Carol has ridden where she did not get cold!

Well some trails finally opened in Southern Ontario, so I fired up the 2009 F5 and went for a ride. The sled still has the dealer tags, and had 0 km's on it. I got to add the 100:1 initial fill up and take it out on the trails for a break-in ride. (Was a 1980's jug of Big Red oil ok to use?)
It's time to remove the tags and start riding!

I have been riding with the Maggs family from Fergus since...well it's a long time now.....

I'm having fun in this bush trail on the F5! This can't be southern Ontario, can it? YES!!!

The Hillsburgh club has done GREAT work getting their trails open this early and getting them in such great shape!

Yes, this is a maple bush, and that's a maple syrup shack in the background. (Nice pic Kevin, and I was ridng when he took this!)

On the old rail line, there were lots of cedar trees and lots of snow covered trails to explore.

This was a super Christmas gift!

Early Season Run on 09 Polaris 800 Dragon

The weekend snowstorm was the perfect opportunity for Hal Armstrong to get out and put some miles on the 09 Dragon Switchback. The best part was it has the 800 CFI engine!

While this was the first tank of gas run through the motor, a 150hp plus motor has lots of pull and will only get better as we log more miles over the Xmas holidays. The engine has a nice ring to the exhaust and there is no hesitation in throttle response no matter what your speed. It just pulls on your arms. Hang on!

The rest of the machine is very familiar to the 08 Switchback. Same chassis,suspension geometry. The Switchback does not come with the Dragon SP updates. The stream lined belly pan, revised A-arm swaybar package, CNC machined spindles or new rear suspension.

The Dragon has a 136" coupled rear suspension, with Ryde-FX remote reservoir rear shock and Arvin 2.0 Air Shocks on the skis. The suspension just works really well.

How big or how small is a Switchback compared to a Smart Car. Have a look!

Rental Riding in BC.....

Well my niece lives in BC and works in the ski hospitality industry (PLUG = Panorama Mountain Village), and she went snowmobiling yesterday with a friend on rental sleds.

Now that's a nice fleet of sleds.......all fired up and ready to roll.

I don't think you get a nicer backdrop for a morning start!
Yeah, that's right, you've got lots a fresh mountain snow and I'm 5,000 KM's away! Go ahead and rub it in!

Trail Marking Time.

Well, we have snow in most places and crews are out finishing the last of the trail staking.
This crew was hard work all day Saturday, marking trails in the Maryhill area near Waterloo, Ontario.

The Golden Triangle Snowmobile Association uses a LOT of stakes to make sure you are riding in the right area of the field.

Someone did a lot of stake painting and reflective work during the fall.

That field looks pretty good, now we need more snow and a run with the groomer.

This former rail-bed trail near Belwood is not open yet, but folks still try to use it. There is a big gate on this trail so folks try to use the ditch as a detour.......big mistake......if it's closed.... it's closed....

SearchMount Snow-X (Sault Ste Marie, Ontario)

Weekend #1 of Snow-X is complete, here are the pic's and overview of the weekend:

Before practice time on Friday, every sled gets a tech inspection. Then they get to sit outside and wait for the action to start.

New Ski-Doo and Arctic Cat race sleds, and not a scratch anywhere............yet.

Some independent racers had some Yamaha help to get out on the track and wave the blue flag.

Amercian racers such as Tom White came up for the racing action. Tom is a great racer and a VERY "in-the-know" guy.

(Hey is that SGC's Gord Avann in the background with his arm in a sling? See what happens when you arm-wrestle with the girls in high school? )

A rider getting the feel of the new sled after many months away from the snow.

Once practice was over, it was time to fine tune and get ready for Saturday's race action.

Searchmount is a big ski hill and those snow-x motors have to wind out at peak RPM all the way to the top. Nobody really slows down for the two up-hill jumps, after all this is snow-x!

It is a long challenging track and every heat leaves you fatigued.

I told you it was a big hill........

Sunday morning, it was -28 celcius......yeah that's cold......can you say "re-jet"?

As the last race ends, the sun sets on a great weekend of racing......

The 2009 Ski-Doo sleds get RACE READY !

From uncrating to ready to roll, here are the new Ski-Doo race sleds.

When the new sleds show up, they need lots of items bolted on, while others pieces come off and are set-up before being put back on the sleds. A set of skis would look nice right about now, and where are the panels?............ Kael?

There are no decals, so while the sleds are being torn down, Kael at Promotional Graphics is busy designing decals for three different Ski-Doo teams.

Here is Kael working on the Mac. The sled hoods are full of angles, so the decals are built in a puzzle-piece manner, then reconfigured on the sleds after printing.

Here is Kael putting the various pieces on the side panels and hood sctions.

Back at London Recreational Racing, the guys are reassembling the race sleds.

Lots of drilling for the studs, then on go the backing plates and lock-tight nuts.

Work , work, work......
"How are we supposed to have a coffee break with a camerman snapping photos all the time?"

Finally the sleds are race ready, and it's off to Sault Ste Marie (Searchmount) for the first race of the CSRA season........YAHOOO!!!!!!

Sorry guys, you worked really hard, but you don't get to race. You get to wait for Monday morning when those nice new sleds come back with racing wounds.

The winds blew in from the southern end of Georgian Bay and dropped light snow near the shore areas but it got better as those winds climbed the ski hills area of Collingwood.

The scenic areas of Grey County had a super layer of snow, making it a picture perfect day!

The snow plows were out during the night creating the first snowbanks of the season.
