In marketing terms it is a, &amp;ldquo;fact sheet&amp;rdquo; not a marketing document. If you want to get noticed you have to have a marketing document not a resume. One that markets benefits.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Marketing 101 teaches marketing is all about getting to the customer&amp;rsquo;s motivation. It is all about what&amp;rsquo;s in it for them. Few resumes are a true marketing document. Most are some combination of features and benefits, with heavy weighting on features. Few hiring managers will get excited reading a list of features. These are nice to know, but unfortunately, don&amp;rsquo;t create any emotional reaction. Benefits, on the other hand, do create an emotional reaction. It is this reaction that creates the desire to buy.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;For example, you could have the following feature on your resume, &lt;em&gt;&amp;ldquo;Substantially reduced turnover in first year.&amp;rdquo;&lt;/em&gt; A good fact but no emotional reaction. Instead you could market the benefit to the hiring manager, &lt;em&gt;&amp;ldquo;Reduced turnover from over 55% to less than 10% in my first year. This resulted in an estimated savings of $150,000 in just hiring costs. The distinction between expertise and your experience becomes critical. If you plan to change industries, or role within the industry you are currently in you have two options. The first option being that of acquiring a new set of technical skill or the second option of taking your already existing experience and market it as transferable skills into the new role or industry.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt; /&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;When looking at your experience you need to decide on what skills you should focus on as transferable. Some of your skills will be highly specific and maybe require some type of industry specific training. With that being said, the general skills and abilities that employers have a tendency to look for are those which can be developed in one place and applied to a new position and role in a different industry.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Here are some examples of transferable skills:&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Decision Making: Being able to identify options available to you, evaluate them and then choosing the appropriate one(s).&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Problem Solving: Having the ability of identifying and using appropriate methods to come to a solution for a problem. It can also be stated as thinking critically and acting logically to evaluate a situation, solve problems and make decisions.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Planning: You are capable of figuring out a schedule of available resources to you and the activities necessary to meet an objective.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Ability to Prioritize: You are able to evaluate and prioritize what is necessary to achieve an objective.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Teamwork: The ability to work effectively either other to achieve objectives.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Oral Communication: You possess the sufficient speech abilities to express ideas or communicate information effectively and professionally.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Written Communication: Being able to produce grammatically correct and easily understood text that we effectively relay information.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Leadership: You have the capability to lead and motivate other member of the organization to achieve a goal.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Time Management: Your ability to meet deadlines through managing tasks effectively.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;These are just a few examples of transferable skills that you can use will changing roles or industries during your job search. Meanwhile, fewer workers are willing to sacrifice a balanced lifetime for family, recreation, intellectual interests, hobbies, community service and personal growthfor the hope of promotion and business success.  &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;I say, good for them; our communities will be better for their commitment to life-work balance!&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;b&gt;21st Century Career Strategy&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;In this ever-shifting world of work, how do you prepare for careers that havent been invented yet?   The constant factors in career management are your core strengths and motivations:  what do you do better than others doing the same work?  Which of your personal qualities are most beneficial in the work place?  &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Several objective assessment instruments, such as the Career Factors Inventory, the Motivational Appraisal of Personal Potential (MAPP) and the Strengths Finder® profile are widely available to help you identify your unique talents.  As new careers emerge, a solid understanding of your strengths, preferences and motivations provides the basis for choosing which will be a good fit. Your best career strategy will be nothing like the one that worked for my father. It will include all of the following (and more!):&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;b&gt;Learning&lt;/b&gt;. Twenty-first century career management demands a commitment to lifelong learning.  As new technologies are developed and old processes streamlined, the ability to learn becomes a competitive edge.  Understand how you learn and the environment best suited to you, and make sure you stay engaged.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;b&gt;Curiosity&lt;/b&gt;. Develop a strong curiosity about trends and developments in your career field.  The Internet makes it easy to acquire information, but make sure you are using objective sources (not opinions and assumptions) and search multiple sites with different points of view to develop a comprehensive picture.  Consider how trends in technology, population growth, emerging industries and social issues will impact your field in the short-term (3-5 years) and the longer term.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;b&gt;Skill-based Jobs&lt;/b&gt;. In his book, &lt;u&gt;Re-Imagine! Business Excellence in a Disruptive Age&lt;/u&gt;, management guru Tom Peters describes a world where workers engage in sequential projects in which they learn skills that will further their careers while simultaneously creating value for their employers.  These teams come together to produce a specific outcome; they share common goals, bring different skills, rely on collaboration and reduce the time required to complete the work.  The team then disbands and new teams are configured for the next project.  &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;b&gt;Responsibility&lt;/b&gt;. Andy Grove, widely known as the CEO of Intel Corporation, told his employees that they, not the company, were responsible for their careers.  While Intel provided tuition reimbursement and paid sabbaticals, Grove stood firm in his conviction that career management was an individual, not a corporate, responsibility and that promotions and significant projects would go to those actively engaged in developing their careers.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;b&gt;Emotional Intelligence&lt;/b&gt;. The idea that an individual can precisely steer his way from job to job in a rapidly changing society is unrealistic. Instead, a man should have long-term goals and let his career develop according to market opportunities.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;If you keep your eyes fixed on a point in the horizon, chances are that you will overlook possibilities that arise in your immediate environment. Rationality demands having a long-term vision, but implementation details should be modified to fit current opportunities.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Have you ever wondered why indifference is the usual reaction to innovation? Is it not amazing that potential customers, who would be so well served by a new service, are not even willing to listen to a sales pitch? The world is barren land for dreamers, but an endless source of opportunities for problem-solvers. Conventional wisdom preaches that where there is a will, is a way. Possibly, but who wants to walk a path leading to constant disappointment?&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;If you are about to start a new venture, please remind yourself of the fact that there are 70% chances that you won't survive beyond the fifth year. Some markets show even higher failure rates for new products or services, as it is the case of packaged foods, soda drinks, and restaurants.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Statistics tell us how hard it is to attain business success. The same level of difficulty applies to career planning. Is there a way to predict if a new service is destined to be buried by consumer indifference? How can we ensure that we only launch products that have a reasonable good chance? What strategy maximizes our probability of having a satisfactory career?&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The answer is to discard the myth of perfect planning at the same time that we avoid random moves. Never put all your business resources into making new stuff and throwing it blindly into the market. Never concentrate all your career expectations on one single path. In those cases, hoping for the best is bound to reveal itself as an expensive delusion.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;History has repeatedly proven that new undertakings enjoy the best prospects of success when they are aligned with strong demand in the market. Such demand is frequently shown through factors such as annoyance, dissatisfaction, and misery.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The ideal business or career situation consists of serving customers who are deeply annoyed by a problem. Take away your eyes from rigid career objectives and look at the world as an entrepreneur. Ask yourself who is dissatisfied with existing solutions and see if you can propose something better. Find a distribution system that is miserably under-utilized and figure out how to improve it.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Hitting trouble spots doesn't guarantee commercial or career success, but it is as close as you can get. Instead of making unrealistic plans, seek out fields of activity where annoyance has become apparent. The angrier the potential customers, the more receptive they will be to new solutions. Do you remember the irritation at airport check-in lines before the adoption of electronic ticketing?&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;When you detect dissatisfaction in the market, take good note. The more inefficient the current solution, the higher the value that you can add. Commercial and career success are all about adding value. Do you remember that, not so long ago, it was impossible to deliver packages overnight?&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Remember that inefficient distribution systems may also offer extraordinary opportunity. The less profitable the current method, the more avidly it will embrace innovation. Thousands of retail locations have seen their value doubled thanks to fast-food franchises. Discard the myth of career planning and, instead, see if you can see solve a burning problem. Those who prove able to alleviate long-standing pain can attract enthusiastic customers.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Accepting reality can be a difficult undertaking. Maybe for that reason, Nature has endowed us with two eyes and two ears to perceive the world and only one mouth to contradict ourselves. Stick to your strategy, but shun rigid plans that might prevent you from taking swift action when unexpected possibilities arise.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Your long-term goals should be broad enough to allow you to move forward in good or bad markets. Abandon the myth of strict planning and the expectation that you should reach a specific career goal before you reach a particular age. You are a unique human being and so is your situation. From time to time, luck may offer you the chance of rapid advancement. By getting noticed I mean read and ultimately you get a phone call or email.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Lets all agree there is only one reason for a resume, and that is to get an interview. That is it -- PERIOD. A resume isn't to get you a job, it isn't a networking tool&lt;strong&gt;,&lt;/strong&gt; it isn't a bio and&lt;u&gt;&lt;strong&gt; most important of all a resume  isn't ABOUT YOU.&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/u&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;A resume is about the person reading the resume. If the only purpose is to get you an interview, then the resume better stand out so they take the time to read the resume. Standing out doesn't mean gimmicks, highlighting or other tricks that only make you look desperate. Standing out means they see what they are looking for and want to read on and ultimately engage  you.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;I believe candidates need to realize how people review resumes or take a step back, be very objective, and think about how they reviewed resumes when they had a stack of 100+ resumes sitting on their desk.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;I know for me it starts with the 10 second review.  I'm looking for a few box checking items or points and if they are missing, or aren't a fit, I move on. For example:&lt;/p&gt;&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;If my client isn't going to relocate, and you are from out of the area, you are gone.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt; If I'm searching for a VP of X and you are a VP of Y you are gone.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt; If for whatever reason you have to have experience in a specific industry and you don't, or haven't at least worked in an industry that is a close fit, you are gone.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt; If my client is a small entrepreneurial company and you have only worked in very large companies you go into the "B" pile.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt; If you have had 8 jobs in the last 8 years chances are you are either gone or in the "B" pile.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;If the scope of your positions don't align with my client's you are gone. For example,  if I'm searching for an International X and all your resume discusses is domestic, I think you know what is going to happen.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;&lt;p&gt;A recruiter, HR person or hiring manager can determine these in 10 seconds or less. Once all of these fundamentals are box checked then I'm going to take the time to read the resume in more detail. It is here that the rubber meets the road. This is where the resume needs to be about my client, NOT YOU. It is here that I'm making the decision of whether to pick up the phone and call you or not.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;So it is critical under the "do" column of "Resume Do's and Don'ts," that you meet these basic screening issues or at least in one fashion or another address them.  For example, if you are open to relocation and willing to pay your own relocation expenses that should be in the cover letter. This could help level the playing field with local candidates,  if other points on your resume are compelling. You may go to the "A" or  "B" pile instead of being eliminated.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Under the "don't" column of  "Resume Do's  and Don'ts," you need to make sure that when the person gets to the reading stage of your resume that you don't discuss  irrelevant issues or accomplishments. This is the time to stand out, differentiate yourself and hit a home run.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The biggest "don't" is don't try to get by with a one-size-fits-all resume. These resumes are so generic it is impossible to know exactly what the candidate actually did. The bullet points don't include results and are so vague the reader could change the name at the top and the resume would be like all the rest.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Don't regurgitate the duties, tasks and responsibilities of the job in bullet point format.  Most companies will not consider you a great hire if all you do are the very basic duties of the job. Your bullet points should demonstrate the exceptional work you have performed. The resume bullet points should sing out loud and clear, "Here are the benefits to you if you hire me."&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Change  your perspective on the resume. Stop thinking of it as a resume about you. Start thinking of it as a marketing document or advertisement. As a short refresher, I was&lt;br /&gt;working two searches for two different companies. In both case they&lt;br /&gt;selected the older more experienced people, over the younger candidates&lt;br /&gt;with less experience. These were both very senior level positions and&lt;br /&gt;even the younger candidates had 20+ years experience. The older&lt;br /&gt;candidates had 30+ years experience.&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;So if age&lt;br /&gt;discrimination is so wide spread, one has to ask themselves, How could&lt;br /&gt;this happen in two completely different companies and for two&lt;br /&gt;completely different positions?&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Regardless&lt;br /&gt;of your viewpoint as to the extent of age discrimination what is clear&lt;br /&gt;there are a few things you can do to help minimize it.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;I firmly believe there were two major contributing factors that came together:&lt;/p&gt;&lt;ol&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;b&gt;&lt;u&gt;Position level:&lt;/u&gt;&lt;/b&gt; These were very senior positions and&lt;br /&gt;the two older candidates were not only highly qualified, but were not&lt;br /&gt;taking a step backwards. I am approached on almost a weekly basis by&lt;br /&gt;candidates claiming to be qualified for a search Im doing. Yet, when&lt;br /&gt;I read their resume it is true they are qualified, however they are&lt;br /&gt;over-qualified. For example, a CFO willing to accept a Controller&lt;br /&gt;position, a VP Sales interested in a Sales Manager, a CEO interested in&lt;br /&gt;a VP level job. Im not saying they couldnt do the job Im working to&lt;br /&gt;fill. In fact, most have done the job 5 or 10 years ago. Recruiters are&lt;br /&gt;looking for someone who has done the job 5 or 10 years ago. They were&lt;br /&gt;qualified 5 or 10 years ago. They arent qualified today. &lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;b&gt;&lt;u&gt;Presentation:&lt;/u&gt;&lt;/b&gt; In what I believe is one of the most&lt;br /&gt;important blog articles for candidates to not only understand, but to&lt;br /&gt;actively implement into their job search was, The Three Most Important&lt;br /&gt;Words In A Job Search. A job search is all about the presentation. At&lt;br /&gt;the end of the day, the one that makes the best presentation usually&lt;br /&gt;wins. Couple a great presentation with extraordinary experiences or&lt;br /&gt;qualifications and you have a winner every time. So then what is a&lt;br /&gt;great presentation. The most common complaint, feedback, comment or&lt;br /&gt;whatever else one wants to call it for those older candidates is, They&lt;br /&gt;seem like they just want a place to ride out until they retire. or&lt;br /&gt;They come across as just needing a job. Generally, due to a poor&lt;br /&gt;presentation. Some thoughts&lt;/p&gt;&lt;ol&gt;&lt;li&gt;If you look old you will be discriminated against. I am not known&lt;br /&gt;for my tact and political correctness. Dont kill the messenger. This&lt;br /&gt;is a fact like it or not. In our job search workbook we talk about the&lt;br /&gt;4 As required to get a job. Appearance is one of them. These were&lt;br /&gt;given to me by a VP Human Resources at Rockwell. If you dont know the&lt;br /&gt;4 As or know them but arent doing them you can get them for free,&lt;br /&gt;just pay the $5 shipping charge. The candidates that were hired, no one&lt;br /&gt;knew their correct age. They all presented themselves extremely well. &lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Energy/Enthusiasm. Too often candidates come across burned out,&lt;br /&gt;desperate or tired. Their body language even communicates this. The&lt;br /&gt;problem is most candidates think they can mask this. FEW CAN. So few&lt;br /&gt;that it would be inappropriate to assume you are one of the few. I know&lt;br /&gt;you all know this. However, demonstrating these during an interview is&lt;br /&gt;a completely different thing. So if you know this, How are you&lt;br /&gt;demonstrating these? Have you tested your demonstration to a&lt;br /&gt;non-biased (i.e. not your spouse or neighbor) person? If you havent&lt;br /&gt;tested this too ensure you are sending the right energy then you may&lt;br /&gt;have a problem. Again, everyone of the candidates hired, the hiring&lt;br /&gt;manager never questioned their energy or if&lt;a  target="_blank" href="http://www.articlesfactory.com/articles/psychology.html"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;/a&gt;, they were just looking&lt;br /&gt;for a place to retire. &lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ol&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ol&gt;&lt;p&gt;Granted&lt;br /&gt;there are a lot of other things one can do to help reduce of&lt;br /&gt;discrimination. Im not suggesting these are the only two. Research in one large organisation discovered that the figure could be as high as 90 per cent. And another survey found that many managers consider meetings they attend, to be a waste of time. In fact, some managers say that – “meetings take ‘minutes’ and last for hours.”&lt;br /&gt;If you are a manager or team leader, then you will have to hold meetings; here are 4 steps to make them exceptionally Motivational:&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;1.&lt;strong&gt; Don’t hold a meeting unless you really have to.&lt;/strong&gt; Be really, really sure that the meeting is needed and that it has a clear objective. By the end of the meeting, however long it takes, the shorter the better; you have to be sure that you’ve achieved that objective.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;2. Start the meeting on time.&lt;/strong&gt; Don’t wait for anyone and don’t go over what’s been discussed for latecomers. Of course, you really shouldn’t have latecomers and if you do, speak to them individually after the meeting and sort it out.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;3.&lt;/strong&gt; &lt;strong&gt;Have a structured agenda showing start time, breaks and finish time.&lt;/strong&gt; Don’t schedule meetings to start on the hour; say 1.20 rather than 1 0’clock. And if it’s a half day meeting, start in the afternoon rather than the morning; people will keep moving if they think they will be late leaving work. Ruthlessly stick to that agenda; don’t allow people to ramble or talk about things not on the agenda. If you want to have chit-chat time – put it on the agenda! Keep people moving and even get them out the door before the finish time on the agenda.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;4. Make meetings fun&lt;/strong&gt;. Supply snacks, drinks, fruit and chocolate. Start the meeting with a fun energiser game or quiz. Let one of the team chair the meeting occasionally (as long as they control the agenda). Whether it was a misspelled word, the wrong prefix on a word, or fragmented sentence, how many resume mistakes does it take to prevent getting a job? Many hiring managers have a zero tolerance when it comes to such mistakes on a resume. Following are more resume writing tips inspired from things seen on people’s resumes.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Tip 1:&lt;/strong&gt; Resume cover letters must communicate. Review your letter to be sure it does the following: &lt;br /&gt;• Makes the case that you are the solution to the employer’s problems. &lt;br /&gt;• Gets to the primary subject quickly. &lt;br /&gt;• Solidly connects employer’s job requirements with your background and experience.&lt;br /&gt;• Is written such that all sentences and paragraphs are short and easy to read. &lt;br /&gt;• Makes a solid connection with the needs of the prospective employer.&lt;br /&gt;• Has repeated use of the word “you” (i.e., remember that the theme of your resume is what you can do for them, not the other way around). &lt;br /&gt;• Minimizes number of fonts used. One is preferable to me, with sparing use of italics and “bold.” &lt;br /&gt;• Uses a clear and easy to read font that is no smaller than a size “10” or “11.” &lt;br /&gt;• Makes a simple but clear case that you would like to work for them. &lt;br /&gt;• Expresses a reason why they should contact you. &lt;br /&gt;• Factors in a reason to act sooner rather than later. &lt;br /&gt;• Starts the letter by stating your conclusion upfront.&lt;br /&gt;• Supports your position by presenting a quantifiable objective(s) and briefly mentions why is/are relevant. &lt;br /&gt;• Restate major conclusion in a sentence or two at end of letter. &lt;br /&gt;• Makes it easy to reach you: provides multiple ways that you can be contacted (i.e., home telephone, email, street address, and/or cell number at minimum).&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Tip 2:&lt;/strong&gt; If in doubt, keep it simple. Use an English word equivalent rather than French or Latin terms, and single-syllable words rather than multi-syllable terms. Examples include: “per day” instead of “per diem,” “per year” instead of “per annum,” “essential” instead of “sine qua non,” “genuine” instead of “bona fide.” An exception is if such terms are common in your industry.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Tip 3:&lt;/strong&gt; Use specific, measurable terms versus those that are unclear. Examples: “we received numerous inquiries,” versus “we received 170 inquiries.”&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Tip 4:&lt;/strong&gt; Eliminate use of repetitive and unnecessary words. Example #1: “assisted in the preparation of…,” versus: “assisted in preparing.” Example #2: “responsible for the directing of…,” versus “directed.”&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Tip 5:&lt;/strong&gt; Use first-person and second-person words (e.g., "I", "we," "my," "our," "you," "your," "yours," etc.), as appropriate, to personalize your resume and cover letter. &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Tip 6:&lt;/strong&gt; Sometimes it is possible to be too familiar with a document to see it objectively.
