assistance for visually impaired”. Cooperation with London University
(professor Steve Maybank).

Project summary.

ISIR (Institute of Intelligent Systems & Robotics) (former Laboratoire de
Robotique de Paris,) of Paris 6 University studies neuro-cognitive
human-space interaction in order to design and realize prototypes of
intelligent systems, robotics and mechatronics systems, highly autonomous
and/or able to assist healthy and handicapped (especially visually
impaired), in performing everyday life tasks. The provision of autonomous
mobility for the visually impaired is a difficult but important societal
problem. Solutions based on GPS and a digital map of the environment are
not suitable because of the low, 10m, precision of GPS, poor satellite
signal reception in urban areas and indoors, and the difficulty of
responding to changes in the environment. Artificial vision in the form of
SLAM (Simultaneous Localization and Mapping) provides a satisfactory
solution for autonomous mobile robots. However, SLAM is not suitable for
assisting the visually impaired, because human navigation is far more
complex than that of a mobile robot. Human navigation leads to the
definition of natural visual SLAM (SLAM-VN). SLAM-VN is a simulation of
the visual perception-motion loop, including feedback from inertial
sensors to the imaging system, in analogy with the human vestibulo-ocular
feedback. This should reinforce the robustness of classical stereovision
systems and solve the problem of the spatio-temporal instabilities caused
by uneven ground and by sudden and unpredictable human movements. This
thesis aims to define precisely the concept of SLAM-VN and model it in
hardware and software. We will use the ISIR convergent stereovision system
to which we will add an inertial system, which will play the role
analogous to the human vestibular system. The combined system is named
intelligent glasses (IG). One of challenges of the IG system is the
correct synchronization and fusion of the visual information and the
inertial information. The information about the environment obtained by
SLAM-VN will be used for object recognition and tracking, and obstacle
detection. The Fisher-Rao metric will be used to quantify the accuracy
with which the objects and obstacles can be described. This will lead to
the design of new vision processing algorithms, never investigated before.
3D object localization (precision of ~ 0.5 m) will be established via
RANSAC type algorithms. Object tracking will use a classical approach such
as a particle filter. The SLAM-VN model will be validated by experiments,
including navigation in real environments by both the visually impaired
and by the robot iCUB (European humanoid robotic platform of ISIR
laboratory). The interface for visually impaired will include a touch
stimulating interface upon which obstacles will be displayed

The Peer to Peer Networking Group at TU Darmstadt (Germany) is
currently offering fully funded

PhD student positions (BAT IIa [1]).

We are working on decentralized distributed systems (Peer to Peer,
opportunistic-/ disruption tolerant networks) with a special focus on
their robustness to failure and their resilience to denial of service
attacks. The search for new application domains in which these
concepts can help to improve services constantly drives us to tackle
new fields and their problems with flexibility. Some current examples
from our research comprise of cloud computing, emergency first
response, as well as secure and privacy preserving online social

science, mathematics, physics or a related field. You have strong

The Australian Research Council (ARC) Centre of Excellence for Coral
Reef Studies is contacting people who might be interested in applying
for an ARC Future Fellowship. The ARC Centre has recruited 38
full-time research fellows in the past 3 years, working in many
fields relevant for coral reefs (e.g. biophysical sciences, climate
change, conservation planning, economics, social science, modelling).

The Centre is a world-leader in coral reef research (see

Australian Universities. James Cook University and the ARC Centre
will host the 12th International Coral Reef Symposium in Australia in 2012.
The ARC Future Fellowship scheme was launched in 2009. Two hundred
awards are available each year. They are designed to attract
outstanding mid-career researchers (5 to 15 years post-PhD) to
Australia and are open to citizens of all countries. These are
four-year fellowships that provide salaries of up to $140,000/year

The UTAustin|Portugal Program and the Department of Mathematics of the Faculty of Sciences and Technology of the University of Coimbra (under the project below) invite applications for an one-year Postdoctoral Position in Computational Mathematics, beginning October 2009.

The focus of the research is on imaging sciences and scientific computing. It involves variational image processing, image analysis, partial differential equations, numerical analysis, optimization, visualization, and inverse problems in imaging, with applications in medicine and emphasis on endoscopic images.

Applicants should have a PhD in Mathematics or Computational Sciences and Engineering (preferably obtained after December 31, 2006). The position obeys to the Portuguese scholarship system and the corresponding salary is €1495 per month (tax free). No teaching duties are associated with the position.

Scholarships for all International Students
The Adelaide Outstanding Achiever Scholarships International (AOASI)

* Up to nine Adelaide Outstanding Achiever Scholarships International (AOASI) are available to international students from any country undertaking study in any academic discipline except Bachelor of Medicine Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) and Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS).

* Benefits are the waiver of full tuition fees for the normal duration of the program, subject to satisfactory performance.
* A scholarship recipient completing a three year degree program who is offered a further year in the Honours Program may apply for an extension of the scholarship to cover that year.

Eligibility conditions

1. Scholarships will be awarded strictly on academic merit and only actual results can be used. Forecast results are not accepted for scholarship selection. Only complete applications will be considered, and only applicants who have met the University’s minimum English language requirement for direct entry to their intended program of study at the scholarship application deadline will be eligible for consideration. For Australian Year 12 students the basic TER will be used. Bonus points will not be counted.
2. The University reserves the right to vary the awards, or not to offer scholarships if the candidates have not achieved the level of academic achievement to merit the awards.
3. Applicants from education systems accepted by the University of Adelaide for direct entry to the first year of degree studies must apply before commencement of University studies whether in their home country or Australia. Those who have commenced tertiary studies at the time of application will not be eligible.
4. Applicants from education systems where one year of degree studies in their home countries is required for admission to the University of Adelaide first year degree studies must apply before commencement of their second year of studies. Those who have commenced second year studies at the time of application will not be eligible.
5. A scholarship may not be awarded to anyone already holding another scholarship funded by the University of Adelaide.
6. Citizens and Permanent Residents of Australia, and citizens of New Zealand are ineligible for any of the above scholarships.
7. Candidates who have applied for Australian permanent resident status are ineligible to apply.

Enrolment Conditions

1. Scholarship holders must commence study at The University of Adelaide in 2010. By negotiation, an applicant offered a scholarship scheduled to commence in Semester I, 2010 may defer until Semester II, 2010 if there is a Semester II commencement of their chosen program of study. If the applicant is not able to commence in Semester II the scholarship offer will lapse and will not be available to the applicant in 2011.
2. Candidates are required to enrol in The University of Adelaide as ‘international students’ and must maintain ‘international student’ status for the duration of their enrolment in the University. The scholarship will be terminated if a student changes their residency status.
3. Scholarship holders are expected to enrol in a full time load. A scholarship holder who is considering reducing his/her enrolment load must first consult with staff in the International Student Centre. International students are expected to complete their programs within the duration specified on their visa. The University may only extend the duration of study under compassionate or compelling circumstances.
4. Undergraduate scholarships are available for up to four years, subject to satisfactory progress. The University reserves the right to terminate scholarships of students who do not maintain satisfactory progress. Satisfactory progress is defined as the achievement of a GPA (Grade Point Average) of 5 (out of 7).
5. Where a student fails, or withdraws from courses in a given semester (or equivalent teaching period) such that the semester GPA (Grade Point Average) is less than 5.0 in two consecutive semesters, the student will be deemed to have failed to maintain satisfactory academic progress and the scholarship will be terminated unless the University is satisfied that exceptional circumstances exist.
6. If a student faces exceptional circumstances requiring him or her to return home, he/she may apply for a one year deferment of enrolment without loss of scholarship, provided this is approved under the student visa requirements.
7. In order to make a case for exceptional circumstances, a student will need to provide a detailed statement and independent supporting documentation e.g. a doctor’s certificate etc.
8. If a scholarship holder enrols in more than the standard load of 24 units per year, or in courses which increase the tuition fee beyond what is indicated in the scholarship offer letter, or enrols in courses at another institution, he or she shall be responsible for the payment of the additional tuition fees.
9. Students who complete a three-year degree may apply for an additional year, in an Honours program, but extension of the scholarship for the fourth year is subject to the decision of the relevant faculty.
10. The scholarships cover the amount of tuition fee indicated in the scholarship award letter for up to four years of study at the University of Adelaide. The scholarships do not cover the costs of visas, Overseas Student Health Cover, travel, accommodation, living expenses, books and study materials or any other expenses associated with living in Adelaide or study at the University of Adelaide.

Four Doctoral Scholarships

The academic year starts on September 1, 2009. The scholarship is for a period of two years (Master's period), plus two additional years (PhD period) for students who are accepted on the PhD program. The amount of each stipend is 1,000 euro/month, and tuition fees will be waived.

The successful candidates will be admitted to the Master's program in Economics at the University of Barcelona. The Master's program is recognized by the Ministry of Education and the PhD program has received an award of excellence by the Ministry of Science.

The Master's program comprises core subjects during the first year (Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Mathematics and Econometrics) and three optional subjects from a list. During the second year there are also optional subjects, apart from the Master's thesis. We expect the candidate to be engaged in the field of "Public Economics" (optional subjects: Public Finance I: Public spending, Public Finance II: Taxation, Fiscal Federalism, Political Economics, and Health Economics). Participation in the Research Program "Fiscal Federalism" provides a unique opportunity to help address issues such as the design of the financial system of sub-national governments, the evaluation of decentralization in the provision of public services, the analysis of inter-governmental tax competition, and the political economy of

Project Description: This project will study estimation and modeling of financial volatilities based on high frequency data, named realized volatilities, which are more accurate measures than their low frequency counterparts. The research objectives are both technique and content driven. The research will focus on developing precise measures of highly dimensional covariance matrices in the presence of market microstructure noise and Epps effects (non-synchronicity and non-equidistance of price observations),

as well as on extending and improving the structure of the existing dynamic covariance models in order to account for specific statistical properties, such as long memory and constructing parsimonious parametrical models to capture major stylized facts of price volatility. Further, in the empirical application of the project, it will be shown that realized covariance approaches are strong competitors to standard multivariate GARCH approaches as instruments for portfolio and risk management. For this purposes, new economic and statistical criteria have be developed.

The University of Siena invites applications for the Graduate Program in
Economics. The University and the city offer a unique environment for

Scholarship.

A maximum of 16 students will be admitted. The 8 most qualified
candidates will be awarded a four-year scholarship of about €10,500
($16,500) per year, after tax, for a total of about $42,000 ($67,000),

The Graduate Program.

The goal of the program is to train professional economists. Former
students hold positions as economists in the academia, in consulting

After fundamental training in Mathematics, Microeconomics,

Kinase
proteins are intimately involved in cell signalling, and in many cases
mutations to these proteins are involved in the development of cancers.
A number of small-molecule drugs have been developed to target these
proteins, most notably gleevec, which binds to the BCR-ABL kinase and
is used as a treatment for chronic myelogenous leukemia, and iressa,
which binds to the epidermal growth factor receptor's (EGFR) tyrosine
kinase domain and is used to treat non-small cell lung cancer. However,
as is the case for bacteria and viruses, the tumour proteins can mutate
and thereby develop resistance to these drugs. The mechanisms by which
these mutations confer drug resistance are unclear, and are likely to
depend on the particular mutation involved. Clearly, however, if we are
able to understand these mechanisms, we are then in a position to
design novel inhibitors which are unaffected by these mutations.
In
this studentship, you will address the issue of how mutations of EGFR
confer drug resistance to kinase inhibitors by using a range of
simulation techniques, including docking and scoring, fast free energy
calculations, and more accurate rigorous free energy methods. Methods
to calculate the relative free energies of different protein
conformations will also be used. This studentship is funded by the
EPSRC and AstraZeneca (AZ), and will be supported by direct access to
relevant experimental data available through AZ. The project will be
supervised by Prof Jonathan Essex at the University of Southampton,
together with a senior scientist from AZ. You will be joining an
established research team working in the area of applying and
developing computer simulation methods to biological problems.

Procedures/rules

* Fill up the entry form and attach a 4x6 cm color photo of yourself.
* Attach the following documents: certificate of cumulative GPA (IPK, minimum 2.5) from your institution, copies of identification card (KTP/SIM), and proof of environmental award (if there is any) received.
* All entries must be accompanied by a project proposal. Incomplete application form and entry requirements will not be processed.
* Secure the endorsement of a faculty member OR the school academic department head OR college/university dean OR academic vice-president OR president.
* All applications should reach Bayer by May 29, 2009..
* Project proposals must be written in English and double-spaced.. Handwritten or e-mail entries will not be accepted.
* Project proposals, which are adaptations/upgrades of already existing projects are acceptable, but the entry will be judged solely on the basis of new elements introduced and their added value. Pre-existing work or accomplishments prior to the official start-up date will not be given any credit.
* Successful finalists shall be asked to begin implementing their respective projects by June 27, 2009. A premature start-up of the proposed project will be grounds for disqualification.
* While the project proposal should be the applicant’s own concept, the project itself may be carried out by any number of people, with the applicant taking significant role in its implementation.
* The project must be completed or come close to completion by September 30, 2009.
* The judges’ decision is final for all aspects of the competition.

Description: The Life Science Zurich Graduate School consists of nine highly competitive Ph.D. programs, run jointly by the ETH Zurich and the University of Zurich. Each program offers research and education opportunities in a stimulating international environment for ambitious students who wish to work towards a Ph.D. degree. Accepted students perform their research project in one of the participating research groups of their favorite program, according to their scientific interest. Advanced teaching and training courses are offered throughout the curriculum. The program language is English throughout. Ph.D. studies usually last 3-4 years.

Education: Applicants must hold or anticipate receiving a Master's degree or equivalent from a university in a relevant field before starting the Ph.D. program. The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) - Deutscher Akademischer Austausch Dienst – supports a range of postgraduate courses at German universities which aim at providing academically educated young professionals from Developing Countries with further specialized studies. The DAAD supports these selected programs with a certain quota of scholarships and with financial assistance for a special tutoring system. At the end of the course (programs run 12 to 36 months, depending on the particular institution) participants can obtain an internationally recognized Master’s or in some courses PhD degree.

PhD position available at LIRMM, Université Montpellier, France
Title : Prolonged Functional Balanced Standing in paraplegic patient

The standing posture in paraplegic patient can be obtained by knee joint locking. Different approaches are possible: verticalizing wheelchairs, orthosis, Vanini boots, functional electrical stimulation (FES).
Orthoses and Vanini boots allow to lock the knee and the ankles and in some cases to free one or two hand. A visual feedback is necessary for the patient to ensure his vertical alignment.

Electrical stimulation is interesting as it would allow to have in a longer term a completely implanted version of the system and therefore largely more acceptable by the patient. The electrical stimulation of biceps femori allows to lock knee joint but involves high current intensity levels which fatigue quickly the muscles and lead to early joint unlocking. conduisent trop rapidement à un déverrouillage de l’articulation. We propose here to explore orthoses, Vanini boots and FES solutions and combine them if necessary to achieve long term functional balanced standing (allowing to free one hand to grasp an object).

More precisely, we will study :
1) Knee locking under surface FES
Several strategies will be considered : 1) moving from continuous stimulation to intermittent one , 2) alterning stimulation on the two sides, 3) optimizing stimulation patterns (frequency, amplitude, …), 4) involving frontal plane movements (lateral oscillations) and stimulating other muscles. (lateral oscillations controlled by verticality of the trunk), 5) bifocal stimulation of thigh muscles, 6) matrix stimulation to modify the localization of stimulation point.

2) Balance control
We will propose strategies to ensure balance by combining different solutions (orthoses, Vanini boots, FES)
