But you know how you get newer and better stuff and leave the older stuff on the shelf for a while? Well, while doing my homework (yep homework on Sunday...) On this day in history 24 years ago a 18 year old learned one of the most important lessons in life...
That no matter how stupid, how confused, how wild, how rebellious, how sad, or how lonely a person is they can receive the BEST GIFTS from GOD!!!
Today is the 24th birthday of my first born child! She has been a joy, she has been a pain, she has angered me, she has made me laugh, she has made me cry, she has frustrated me, she has made me proud but most importantly she has made be a BELIEVER! She has made me believe in miracles! To see how far she has come, the battles she has endured, the failures and the victories she has come through and to see her striving to reach her goals, I am amazed at the power of God! When I look at her I can truly and honestly say, " I Am Blessed & Highly Favored!!"

Friday!!
Friday is synonymous with starting off the weekend! Tons of people sit at work and watch the clock on Friday waiting for it to slowly count down to quitting time. These people are deep into their own brains, already planning out what the night will look like! What they will wear, where they will go, who they will go with, what they will eat, what they will drink, etc!!! Weekend planning is a job in and of itself!!
Today's theme falls right in line with the weekend! Because a big part of the weekend for some people revolves around music and dancing!!

The Big Natural Hair Update!!

Hey there blogosphere!!!
Just wanted to give you a quick update. I know that you all have been wondering and waiting with bated breath to know what was going on with me and my journey to natural hair.
Well, wait no more!!!!
You may recall me talking about my hair escapades during this journey HERE. I love, love, love the twist out, it is awesome to be able to just finger through some curls and go. However there is one major problem. As the perm is growing out the permed ends get tangled when I wash and condition my hair and it takes forever to untangle and comb through that mess. I played with the idea of getting Sister Locs so I don't have to be bothered with trying to comb it but decided not to. Being the very impatient person that I am, I decided to stop waiting for it to grow out so I CHOPPED IT ALL OFF!!
That's right I did it, The BIG CHOP! I am also not coloring anymore, so the sides are grey! It is growing in "Naturally Nappy"!! It is so freeing to not have to worry about perming, hot curling, flat ironing, and mostly, trying to keep curls in this heat!
There are some days when I wake up, look in the mirror and say to myself, "What the HELL was I thinking???!!?" But by the time I moisturize it and play with it I remember why I did it!
In about 2-3 weeks I am going to go and get it edged/shaped up but in the mean time, it is what it is!!
I am looking forward to the days when I can do a twist out again, but it will be awhile until my hair grows enough for that. The great part is that IT IS ALL NATURAL BABY!!!!!!!!!!

Hail To The Graduate!!

This past Sunday I got to witness one of the milestones in a young adult's life. High School GRADUATION!!!!!!!!!!!!
Go Mina!!!!
My 17 year old niece graduated from Sam Houston High School here in Texas. The graduation ceremony was held at the Nokia Theater in Grand Prarie. She got an achievement medal for graduating with more credits than was needed.
She has been accepted and will be attending Texas A&M in the fall and wants to major in Forensic Science.
Yes, I AM VERY PROUD of her!! She worked hard and achieved her goal.

Old School Friday!!! Today is the day of the week that I enjoy the most because it involves a few of my favorite activities, MUSIC & INTERNET!!!! I get to travel around and see what my friends have posted it helps me to get to know them a little bit better!!
Yesterday Ms. Grapevine (One of the two OSF Meme creators) reminded us all that it has been a year since we started this musical journey!! And an AWESOME year it has been! We have explored many genres, many styles and many different types of music.

Old School Friday #66 " Outside My Box..."

Friday, Friday, Friday!!
The Week was short but it felt long!! I love Fridays because I get to travel all over the web listening to great music posted by my blogging friends for Old School Friday!
Today's theme is explained as this:
Every once and a while it’s time to try something new and different, the theme of the Week is, “Outside My Box”. It’s time to showcase things that are not normal for you. Things people wouldn’t believe that you’d listen, too…
Now, for me this theme is a little difficult because I think my OSF buddies who have been here since the beginning can agree that have shown them my inside, outside, under and over the box!! I have shown my love for rock music with Queen & Aerosmith. I have shown my love for country with John Denver. I have shown my love for old school with Marvin, Marvin & more Marvin! I have shown my love for political justice/outcry with Gill Scott Heron & Miriam Makeba and I have shown my love for the 90's with New Edition (I will still fight Marva over Ronnie!). I have even shown my love for Big Band/Swing music with Duke Ellington, Glenn Miller & Tommy Dorsey!

I have posted everything from country, to jazz, to gospel, so I had to dig very deep for something that I have not revealed to my OSFers. And I finally came up with something! When my children were younger we watched a LOT of movies (and we still do!). I still have almost every Disney & Pixar movie every made. A big part of these movie's charm was the songs/music. So that is my OSF selection, a few of my animated favorites! And yes DO BELIEVE that I still watch animated "kid" movies! No Shame in my Game! I doubt that ANYBODY posted anything like this!!!
I am very interested to see what my fellow OSF participants post with this theme.

Entrecard... Is This The End??

Yes! For me this is the end of my Entrecard dealings. It was fun while it lasted. I met a lot of interesting people and viewed hundreds of great and not so great blogs.

I got to share the beautiful picture of my grand baby with many Entrecard users! And yes the Little Princess became the poster child for this blog!
Entrecard as a social networking tool did not really work because the goal was to meet new people and see new blogs but after a while the goal became to drop 300 cards a day. If you are dropping 300 cards a day you do not have the time to actually read all the blogs you come across.

Dropping cards became very time consuming and difficult to do. It became a burden and a chore and all of the fun over time drained away. There were sites that would crash my computer, sites that took forever to load, often requiring a refresh and another wait. There were sites that had the drop box below the fold or hidden between blog post, or buried between numerous side bar advertisements. It all became too much.
With being back in school my 300 cards a day addiction shriveled to 300 per week. Then It slowed to 30 cards per week, then maybe 3 cards a week. If I visit a blog and I happen to see the Entrecard box then I might drop a card if I think about it but more often than not I just bypass it!
Last week I removed the Entrecard drop box from my blog page. I still have a few credits left that I will use up and then I will be done with Entrecard!
To all of those bloggers that I met via Entrecard, if you don't see me again don't take it personal because it is not about you! Happy blogging and blessings to you!

Global Day Of Blogging For Troy Davis...

Ever since I was old enough to vote I have avoided one major issue and that is being on a jury. I was called only 3 times in my life (42 years) and I never had to serve on a jury. Some people may feel there is nothing wrong with sitting in a jury with your peers, hearing the evidence, and then passing judgment by rendering a verdict. Me on the other hand I have MAJOR issues with that.
Issue # 1 - I truly believe that only GOD should be someones judge.
Issue # 2 - What if you are WRONG?

We have seen it happen before, too many times for my liking. After hearing the evidence, there is a conviction and years later we find out that there was a mistake, or jury tampering, or new evidence and someone was wrongly imprisoned or worse wrongly EXECUTED. Well, I NEVER want to have that on my conscious. It is not my job to say who should and should not die. I CAN NOT and WILL NOT do it!

Now, I explained all of that as a prelude to Troy Anthony Davis.
Troy Davis is a black man sitting on death row in a prison in Georgia. He has been on death row since he was 19 years old. He was convicted of killing a Georgia police officer in 1991. Seven out of nine witnesses recanted their testimony. Amnesty International has taken up Troy Davis' fight but is that enough? The case background according to Amnesty International is as follows,
"Background:

Restrictions on Federal appeals have prevented Troy Anthony Davis from having a hearing in federal court on the reliability of the witness testimony used against him, despite the fact that most of the witnesses have since recanted, many alleging they were pressured or coerced by police. Troy Davis remains on Georgia death row, and may be scheduled for execution in the near future.
Troy Davis was sentenced to death for the murder of Police Officer Mark Allen MacPhail at a Burger King in Savannah, Georgia; a murder he maintains he did not commit. There was no physical evidence against him and
the weapon used in the crime was never found. The case against him consisted entirely of witness testimony which contained inconsistencies even at the time of the trial. Since then, all but two of the state's non-police witnesses from the trial have recanted or contradicted their testimony. Many of these witnesses have stated in sworn affidavits that they were pressured or coerced by police into testifying or signing statements against Troy Davis.
One of the two witnesses who has not recanted his testimony is Sylvester "Red" Coles – the principle alternative suspect, according to the defense, against whom there is new evidence implicating him as the gunman. Nine individuals have signed affidavits implicating Sylvester Coles."
I don't know about you BUT I sure do not want to send a man to his DEATH based on a MAYBE!
Mr. Davis has had 3 different scheduled execution dates. But now his last stay of execution is about to run out. Mr. Davis is almost out of time. Even though I live in Texas I am not in favor of or a supporter of the death penalty.

I don't know if Mr. Davis is guilty or innocent of the crime he was convicted of committing, but WHAT IF.....

The Week Is Finally Over!! I love Fridays because I get to travel all over the web listening to great music posted by my blogging friends for Old School Friday!
Today is actually Saturday... I am just posting my Old School Friday pick because I was actually going to let this one slide past me. I haven't even been around to see what my fellow OSF'ers posted. But to not participate would be bad form and I am such an OSF ADDICT that I had to post something! Friday's theme was The Greatest Of All Time". Odd theme for an Old School Friday since Old School Music is the Greatest music of all time!!!!!!! Hence it's having its own meme!!!

Movies, Movies, Movies!!!

Movies, movies, movies!! I love movies, but I must admit I am not very fond of movie remakes. Older movies lacked the "explosive" "loud" and "spectacular" over the top cinematography and special effects that today's movies have. That means that you had to actually rely on a PLOT and the ACTING to actually engage you and make the movie good! Today movies often add, extra blood, extra explosions, and extra sex to sell a movie. It appears that the studios seem to believe that if the movies does not feature sex scenes, blood & guts, and the standard explosions we will not watch them.
For me this is not true. I love the old movies where the femme fatal or the damsel in distress kept her clothes on through out the movie and never once did I have to see breasts! I love movies that keep you guessing about who the killer maybe rather than you figuring it out in the first 20 minutes! I especially hate movies that feature a weird looking Asian character that crawls around in fast and then slow speed for no good reason!!
So as you can tell I love the classics. But what I hate the most is type casting. I hate to see the same actor playing the same types of roles. I like actors who can show some depth and diversity in their choosing of characters and roles.
But anyway I digress!!
I started this whole rant just to say that one of my all time favorite movies is The Taking Of Pelham 123. This movie came out in 1974 and starred Walter Matthau (yep, remember him?), Robert Shaw and Hector Elizondo (this dude has been around forever!). The plot involves a hijacked subway train in NYC. Since I grew up in NYC, and traveled everywhere on the subway this plot was especially interesting because who steals an underground train?!?!
Anyway The Taking Of Pelham 123 is being remade and will star Denzel Washington and John Travolta. Washington appears to be an intellectual, thinking actor and Travolta is usually a convincing crazy, emotional, scary actor! Both of these men have grown into excellent actors so I think this will be interesting to see.

I hope they stay true to the original format...

Old School Friday #63 " My Favorite Soul Train Performance..."

The Week Is Finally Over!! I love Fridays because I get to travel all over the web listening to great music posted by my blogging friends for Old School Friday!
Tomorrow is Saturday... I remember as a child watching Soul Train every Saturday morning, And YES I did almost kill myself trying to dance like they did!!! For African Americans that was TV's best hour on Saturdays (after that the kids all went outside)! I remember the word scramble that spelled out the days artist, I remember Don Cornelius yelling out Love, Peace & Sooouuullllll, at the end of every episode. But the best part of the show undoubtedly had to be the Soul Train Line!! The clothes, the shoes, the moves, the colors and of course the HAIR! Yep those were the days, No bumping & grinding, No gyrating, just plain old fun!
This took me much, much longer than I expected because there were so many AWESOME artists and performances showcased on Soul Train (even if everyone did lip synch!), how can you choose??? I know that my fellow Old Schoolers will give you a dance party so I will start you off smooth...
I am very interested to see what my fellow OSF participants post with this theme.

An Author's Interview & A Book Giveaway!

I got a chance to interview Jackie Spencer, the author of the newly released book entitled, "A Black Man's Journey Through The Annals Of Time". If you ever had any questions on whether or not black people are in the bible than this interview and this book is a MUST READ!! You can get a copy at Amazon.com. Here is what she said ...:
Can you give us a brief background of your ministerial life?

I have done so much in my few years of life. I have worked in ministry since 1984 in various capacities. I have been a youth leader, a coordinator of children’s and teen departments. I have taught in adult Bible School. I was licensed in 1985 as a Christian Worker by Covenant Ministries International; headed by Pastor Dave Demola; while attending and being on the Board of Faith Christian Center in Staten Island, NY, Pastor George Samuels. I was a department head and Deacon in New Life Fellowship in Rochester NY under Pastor Reginald McGill. I was also ordained as a Minister there; and then ordained again as an Elder.

What is the title of your book and what does it mean?

My book is entitled “A Blackman’s Journey Through The Annals Of Time”. The meaning of the title is symbolic of the fact that people of color, and actually all people are on a journey. There is a beginning point and there will be an end at some point. The Blackman’s journey has been understated, under-researched, and under-appreciated. I wrote this book to take a look at that journey and possibly place it in its proper perspective.

Is this book for clergy, laypersons or the general public?

This book is for anyone who is curious and wants to search for truth. The basis of my authority and faith is the Bible. I make that clear right up front, so as not to offend. The readers of this book will need to be open-minded, even if they profess to be Christian.

What qualifies you to write this book?

That’s an excellent question. My brain, my heart and my thirst for truth qualify me to write this book. As I read my Bible and looked at life I said, something’s wrong here. At that point I decided to stop reading and start studying.

What inspired you to write THIS book at THIS time in history?

I believe that we are in a pivotal time in history. We are in a time where truth needs to be revealed, and petty difference and prejudices need to be put aside. Christ is not coming back for a black church or a white church. He’s coming back for “The Church”. There will not be a black section of heaven and a white section and an oriental section. There will just be heaven. We need to understand that we are all one family. We have different traits and different purposes; yet there is only one goal – to please God!

What do you want people to ultimately understand about your book?

I want people to understand that if they would just “study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth” (2^nd Tim 2:15); they would be amazed at the things the Holy Spirit will reveal to them about what God has to say about them.

Also I want people to understand that this book speaks to the many purposes of the “Blackman”, meaning all of black humanity, male and female. We have purpose. We may not always walk in our purpose, but we have purpose. We can only find out what that purpose is if we go back to the one who made us and see what He has to say about us.

Lastly I want people to understand that we not only have purpose, but we also are the recipients of promises and blessings. Our true history needs to be researched and told, so that our futures may appear a bit clearer.

We have an African American President in the White House; how does your book enhance or detract from that ground breaking election?

My book points backward to where President Obama and all African Americans came from. He is the descendant of Kings and Queens and people of God. His election points forward to where my book could not go, because I do not know the future. What I do know, however, is that I believe President Obama is walking in his God ordained purpose.

When you look in the face of a black child you don’t know who you are really looking at. You could be looking at a doctor or lawyer or dentist or architect or drug dealer or killer or president. So maybe we should try a little harder to “train up (a child) these children in the way (he) they should go; and when (he is) they are old, (he) they will not depart from it.” I believe there are more Barak and Michelle Obamas among black people, not just African Americans; but people of color all over the world, who have not yet stepped into their destiny, to fulfill their purpose.

What do you have to say to those that believe Jesus is Black or White?

My first comment is that it is not the color of His skin that is significant, but the color of His blood. For redemption to take place He had to be human and have red blood like all other humans.

My second comment is this; whether Jesus was tan or pale doesn’t really matter. He was a Jew sent to save the Jewish people. That’s why they called Him the King of the Jews; but because of His love for all mankind He opened up redemption to include everyone.

In your book, on page #32 you wrote, “The Cushites were the descendants of Cush, son of Ham, son of Noah”. Now without giving away too much of the book’s contents, can you briefly explain why THAT one sentence is so important to you personally?

I have spent years trying to find black people in the Bible and couldn’t, with the exception of slaves. For some reason in America the words slave and blacks are synonymous. Anyway, after years of studying, the Holy Spirit gave me a revelation. The revelation was this; names are very important to God. Those endless geologies in the Bible are important. God wanted me to know where I came from.

Any last comments?

I would suggest that whoever reads this book, read it with a pad, pen and Bible nearby; and you may want to grab a dictionary. The purpose of this book is to get you studying and thinking. It is not for entertainment.
