The question is-do they really work? Toothpastes remove stains from the surface of your teeth using gentle abrasives. Whitening toothpastes include extra agents and chemicals designed to polish your teeth more effectively and defend against staining. This process should not be confused with teeth bleaching as there is no bleach contained in these extra stain-busting formulas.

Primarily, teeth whitening toothpaste products are most effective for those who have experienced yellowing due to coffee/tea drinking, smoking and eating foods that can cause staining. They are also recommended for those who have already undergone some type of whitening procedure as a follow-up.

If you still feel that tooth whitening is for you, here's some basic information about what to look for in your toothpaste purchase:
• Tooth whitening products should contain fluoride for added defense against tooth decay.
• Dentists recommend newer brands of teeth whitening toothpastes containing less harsh abrasives.
• Certain whitening products may destroy enamel if used for long periods of time. When you reach your whitening goal, don't overdo it. Don't continue with a product that isn't working.
• Look for a product that fights plaque build-up and tartar control. To list this benefit, ADA standards must be met showing that this toothpaste works better than standard toothpastes.
• For sensitive teeth look for a specially-formulated whitening toothpaste. Pain and damage can occur if the product does not shield your sensitive teeth.
• Taste matters. Some whitening toothpastes may contain powerful stain fighting agents, but if you dislike the taste, you won't use it.

http://ezinearticles.com/?Tips-For-Teeth-Whitening-Products&id=2607654

zonkettenoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6065867564969618811.post-66347324957031274472009-06-06T23:00:00.000-07:002009-06-06T23:01:36.652-07:00Sure Shot Exercises to Grow Taller! Ok, now that the terminology is out of the way, lets take a look at this killer disease.

What are some of the symptoms?

Type 1 diabetes has some of the same symptoms as type 2 diabetes. That is why it is sometimes confused with type 2. They are:

* Increased thirst
* Frequent urination
* Increase hunger
* Blurred vision
* Tiredness/fatigue
* Weight loss

So what is the difference between type 1 and type 2? With type 1 diabetes mellitus, little or no insulin is produced by the pancreas ( hormone needed for converting sugar to energy.) The only way to replace it is by insulin injections.

With Type 2 diabetes, the body either resists insulin or does not produce enough to convert sugar to energy.

How do you test for type 1 diabetes?

Doctors test for type 1 diabetes using the C-peptide assay ( this measures your bodys' production of insulin. )

How do you treat type 1 diabetes mellitus?

Treatment includes not only insulin injections and monitoring your blood sugar, but eating right and regular exercise. Pancreas transplant is the only known potential cure for those with type 1 diabetes.

How can I manage my diabetes?

* Schedule a physical yearly
* Keep an eye on your feet for sores/infections
* Schedule regular eye exams
* Keep your blood pressure down
* Keep your teeth healthy. Brush at least twice a day
* Keep your immunizations up-to-date ( such as flu shot )
* Keep your cholesterol low

Type 1 diabetes mellitus most often starts in early childhood ( otherwise known as "Juvenile diabetes." ) But actually it can develop at any age, even in adulthood.
http://ezinearticles.com/?Type-1-Diabetes-Mellitus---Symptoms,-Treatment-and-Management&id=2288671

zonkettenoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6065867564969618811.post-68835476069636571332009-04-08T22:15:00.000-07:002009-04-08T22:16:16.391-07:00Fat Loss Tips That Will Melt and Shred Body Fat and Get You That Toned Body Look Everyone WantsDo you feel like you're carrying a few extra pounds on your body? Are you looking for a healthy, natural way to get rid of them? I am sure if you're like most people you realize how much better your life would be if you lost some extra weight. You would have more energy. You would feel better about yourself. You'd sleep better. The opposite sex would find you attractive.

I am going to share with you a few tips that have helped me along the way. The first thing you need to remember is that an extra few glasses of water each day are very beneficial to you. Water is great because it doesn't contain any calories in the first place. It makes you feel refreshed after drinking it. And it actually cures your hunger. A lot of the time you may think you're hungry but the body is just telling you that it needs a drink.

The next simple step you can take is to start eating a healthy breakfast. This breakfast may be wheat toast, eggs, and a glass of orange juice. That is actually one of my favorite things to eat. If you want to keep it simple by eating a granola bar with a piece of fruit that is also a safe bet. Breakfast is key because it starts your metabolism up for the night of rest. While your body slows down the metabolism also slows down.

The next tip is to stay active throughout the day. Most people forget that going to the gym is just a small part of your day. But if you make sure to take little walks or to do little chores throughout the day you'll actually burn more calories. I once lost 15 pounds in 2 weeks just by doing simple things around the house. So working out is important but you don't have to stress out right away about doing it.
http://ezinearticles.com/?Fat-Loss-Tips-That-Will-Melt-and-Shred-Body-Fat-and-Get-You-
That-Toned-Body-Look-Everyone-Wants&id=2199955

zonkettenoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6065867564969618811.post-51042500798006615862009-03-25T00:39:00.000-07:002009-03-25T00:42:17.847-07:00How to Lose 2 Pounds Per Day - Lose 2 Lbs Every Day!OK so I admit the title line might seem like an impossible prospect, right? Wrong, I'll explain the 3 things you need to do every day in order to lose 2 pounds per day. Best of all you won't be starving and anyone can do these things without much trouble.

How to lose 2 Pounds Every Day!

#1 - Use PGX: This carb blocker or starch neutralizer will bind to sugars and starches in your digestive tract and prevent them from becoming absorbed by the body. It's an excellent way to keep the pounds off without doing anything. I've personally witnessed people lose over a pound every day for 2 weeks using this supplement alone!

#2 - 20 Minute Daily Exercise: The common misconception is that you need to exercise like crazy to see any kind of results. The truth of the matter is that you really only need to stimulate your metabolism for 20 minutes to start seeing significant results. Try going for a 20 minute walk every day.

#3 - Calorie Shifting: This dieting system utilizes food to stimulate your metabolism into burning more fat daily than is otherwise normally possible. Think of getting the results of exercise through eating food. Best of all unlike virtually all other diets that you could ever try this one doesn't cause a rebound effect or a loss of results when you finish as it doesn't weaken the metabolism like low calorie diets would. Calorie shifting requires eating 4 meals per day which are constantly changing and this forces your metabolism to become more responsive in general, the effects of which can be felt for weeks after completing the diet.
With these 3 weight loss methods you'll be able to lose 2 pounds per day every day!
http://ezinearticles.com/?How-to-Lose-2-Pounds-Per-Day---Lose-2-Lbs-Every-Day!&id=2139153

zonkettenoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6065867564969618811.post-1710304787087973902009-02-28T00:12:00.000-08:002009-02-28T00:13:24.015-08:00Monologues give voice to women's issuesShawnee students, faculty as well as members of the community packed into the Kahl Theatre for Shawnee's third annual presentation of the play. "The Vagina Monologues" helps raise funds for the global movement to end violence against women and girls, the day on which it is presented having become known as "V-day."

"It's good to be involved with a project that raises awareness about violence against women," narrator Stephanie Bush said.

This year's cast included students, faculty, and alumni. Twenty-one women participated in this year's event over the course of 18 scenes, including the introduction.

A complex play, It consists of actual monologues from women from all over the world, talking about their vaginas. The subjects discussed differ greatly from scene to scene. They range from the natural beauty of hair ("Hair") to a woman who discovers she is beautiful because she met a man obsessed with the anatomy of vaginas ("Because He Liked to Look at it") to the exploitation of women and girls in prison camps ("Say It").

The tone of each scene differs as well. The comical "My Angry Vagina," explained why her vagina was "pissed off" to the call to have women take back a word that many consider derogatory in "Reclaiming Cunt." The play finished with the heart wrenching "Baptized" which described how soldiers in the Congo were raping young girls and women because they are prisoners of an ongoing conflict that has been occurring since 1996.

"My favorite part was the chant where the negative connotation of cunt was taken away," said Derek Dawson, a senior majoring in English.

To date, V-Day has raised over $60 million and educated countless people on issues involving violence against women and efforts to end it.

All of the proceeds from this year's event went to the Southern Ohio Shelter (S.O.S.), a non-profit domestic violence agency that primarily serves the residents of Scioto County.

Each year V-Day wishes to increase awareness of a specific group of women who are resisting violence with courage and wisdom. This year focused on the women and girls of the Democratic Republic of Congo where rape is used as a weapon of war.
http://media.www.ssuchronicle.com/media/storage/paper1252/news/2009/02/23/CampusLife/Monologues.Give.Voice.To.Womens.Issues-3644014.shtml

zonkettenoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6065867564969618811.post-53111396133540650212009-02-02T07:34:00.000-08:002009-02-02T07:35:21.722-08:00Save on fitnessYou aren't cheap, just frugal. You want to stay slim, but your finances are a tad too lean. You seek to maintain your health, but your bank account is lower than Michael Phelps' pulse rate. What to do?

Follow these 15 ways to save on health and fitness.

1. Go generic

Use generic prescription and over-the-counter drugs when possible. The Consumer Reports National Research Center says generics are as safe and effective as name brands.

2. Step outside

Skip the treadmill and the high health-club fees. Go outside and run or walk.

3. Sock it to 'em

Can't afford fancy gloves to keep your hands warm? Find your warmest pair of socks and put them on your hands before a run.

4. Limit ER visits

Stay out of emergency rooms. If you have an ailment that can wait until morning, let it wait. You'll literally save thousands.

5. Flex your options

Do biceps curls with milk jugs and heavier cans as you're putting away the groceries. They weigh about the same as health-club barbells.

6. Flex your spending, too

If your company offers a flexible-spending-account option for health care, take it. These are pretax funds squirreled away in an account to pay for office visits, prescriptions and the like. It's a use-it-or-lose-it plan, so you must estimate how much money to set aside for a year. Err on the low side, lest your December be all about finding ways to spend health-care money.

7. Brace yourself

Buy your own crutches and braces for your appendages. The ones hospitals supply are pricey.

8. Press play

Buy a yoga video (Rodney Yee's "Power Yoga" can be had for $8.99 on amazon.com) instead of paying $15 for every yoga class.

9. Sample before buying

When your doctor says you need to take a new drug, ask her or him for free samples. They usually have a stash on hand.

10. Cash if you can

If you have no insurance and pay cash for your doctor's bill at the time of the appointment, ask if the office gives a discount. Many practices will give cash-paying customers a deal, because they don't have to deal with the insurance hassles.

11. Let students fill in

Get your dental work done at a dental school. But be prepared for a long appointment. These are dental pros-in-training, after all.

12. Mind your peas and carrots

Forget those fancy freezable ice bags pro athletes use. If you've got a sprained ankle or a swollen knee, put a bag of frozen peas on it.

13. Order bulk by mail

Try mail-order pharmacies for your prescription drugs. Buying in bulk is cheaper. (Caveat: Do it only for prescriptions you routinely take.)

14. Factor in the tax facts

Know your tax tips. The IRS allows you to write off the amount by which your medical-care expenses for the year exceed 7.5 percent of your adjusted gross income.

15. Stay home

Eat out less and eat smaller portions. It saves money and shrinks your waistline.
http://www.goerie.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20090202/LIFESTYLES07/302029972

zonkettenoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6065867564969618811.post-90593533985792610692009-01-24T20:00:00.000-08:002009-01-24T20:02:22.972-08:007 tips to improve your healthIf improving your health is at the top of your to-do list for 2009, as it is for many of us, check out this advice from Suzanne Carere, a registered dietitian, and Steve Roest, the president and owner of Toronto's Fitness Institute.

1. Don't eat carbohydrates past 7 p.m.

If you follow this one piece of advice and change nothing else about your health and fitness routine, Carere guarantees you'll lose five pounds within a month-and-a-half.
Why? The body's metabolism revs higher during the day, she says
"As we get closer to bedtime, metabolism slows down. It's at that time of night that we're not going to burn off as many calories as we normally would."

Carbs are not needed as the body prepares for sleep because their sole purpose is to provide energy, which happens when they turn into sugar in the bloodstream, says Carere.

When that energy isn't needed, it's stored as fat.

So, consume your grains, fruits and beans during the day, and cut them out at night.

Carere says it's not as important to limit protein and fat intake past 7 p.m. (a time that she uses as a general guideline) because those foods have various functions in the body, such as muscle repair and skin repair, respectively.

If you're hungry at night, she suggests snacking on veggies and low-fat dip, broth-based soups and sugar-free yogurt.

2. Start your day with a high-carb breakfast

If you cut carbs at night, you'll wake up ravenous. And that's a good thing, says Carere.

"It's called breakfast for a reason. You're breaking the fast. Have a high-carb breakfast, because you want your metabolism to rev as high as it possibly can throughout the day."

A good option is whole-wheat toast or a high-fibre cereal, one with at least 10-per-cent fibre. For example, if your cereal serving has 30 grams of carbs in it, it should contain at least three grams of fibre, she says.

And don't be turned off by a cereal if it has some sugar.

"As long as there's fibre present, it will slow down how quickly the sugar converts to your bloodstream," Carere says.

This is why she says Frosted

Mini Wheats are better for you than Special K.

Add other food groups, too.

"The best thing for breakfast is to try to eat at least three out of four of the food groups so it will last you longer."

3. Rate your foods

Look at every food on a scale of one to five.

On Carere's scale, one means you really couldn't care less about putting the food in your mouth; five means you're going to enjoy every single molecule.

"If it's a three or less on the scale, I won't eat it," she says. "(When you start rating your food), you'll find that most of the time it's not worth the calories for your body."

4. Stop cravings in their tracks

No one is immune to the call of a bag of chocolate chip cookies or that half-eaten pint of Ben and Jerry's in the freezer. But some people know how to ignore the call better than others.

Carere suggests two strategies to add to your nutrition arsenal that should help you beat the cravings that so often leave you feeling guilty and stuffed.
http://www.canada.com/ottawacitizen/story.html?id=76ca1850-99a1-4082-bc30-d282f7b513b0

zonkettenoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6065867564969618811.post-39961972668780629642009-01-13T01:38:00.000-08:002009-01-13T01:46:54.510-08:00Seven ways to quit smokingHave are you doing on your New Year's resolution? Research shows 35 percent of resolutions are broken by the end of January. If you resolved to quit smoking, chances are probably higher. But if you really want to quit, the American Lung Association offers seven tips to help you give up cigarettes:

1. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist about the different over-the-counter and prescription medications to help you quit smoking.

2. Look into the different kinds of self-help options available to smokers.
3. Take time to plan. If you haven't quit yet -- or if you need to quit again -- pick your quit date a few weeks ahead of time. Try to select a date when life's extra stresses are not at their peak. Mark the day on a calendar and stick to it.

4. Get some exercise every day. Walking is a great way to reduce the stress of quitting. Exercise is proven to not only combat weight gain but also to improve mood and energy levels.

5. Eat a balanced diet. Drink lots of water and get plenty of sleep.

6. Ask family, friends and co-workers for their help and support. Having someone to take a walk with or just listen can give a needed boost.

7. Consider joining a stop-smoking program. You don't have to quit alone. Help is available.

The American Lung Association has a program called Freedom From Smoking. It's offered in a group setting or you can even participate online at www.ffsonline .org.
http://detnews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20090113/LIFESTYLE03/901130383

zonkettenoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6065867564969618811.post-5753223413025523322008-12-21T05:24:00.000-08:002008-12-21T05:27:13.713-08:00What can 100 days do for your health? One year after the first 100 Day Resolution challenge motivated more than 700 people to live healthier lives, the program is back for a second round.

The program, which runs from Jan. 1-April 10, challenges Weld County residents to commit to one of four healthy resolutions: to eat better, to move more, to quit tobacco or to create an overall healthier lifestyle.

A spinoff of the traditional New Year’s resolution that many Americans make each year, the challenge focuses on sticking with the resolution for just the first 100 days of the year. The concept behind the challenge is that 100 days may seem like a more achievable goal than a commitment to change for a whole year. And, after 100 days, some people may develop healthy habits that will stick with them beyond the challenge.

Participants will use a personal online log to track their progress. They will click on every day they are able to stick to their resolution. The goal of the challenge is to log at least 50,000 healthy days in Weld County, more than double the success of last year’s program.

Challenge participants can join individually, with a friend or as a group — such as an entire workplace or organization. Be aware of how to properly take care of your body. Teaching health education is aimed in promoting conscientiousness. This involves assessing the current lifestyle and mental state, both crucial in determining one's overall health.

Phases of health:

A. Physical health - refers to the bodily condition itself. Regular exercise, a balanced diet, proper nourishment and enough rest all promote a healthy body.

B. Mental health- refers to the person's emotional and psychological condition. It involves the cognitive and emotional capacity of a person.

The Four Determinants of Health:

A. Environmental science - The study of substance, chemicals and natural components of the environment.

C. Lifestyle - The totality of a person's outlook, principles, and way of life.

D. Self-care - Individual health maintenance and restoration. This involves decision-making in health matters in relation to one's own body.

Health Maintenance: Achieving a healthy state and staying healthy is a continuous process. The following are components of healthy living:

1. Nutrition - the study of the nutritional content of food, and the effects of these to the body.

2. Sports nutrition - The study of the relationship between dietary supplements and athletic activities. The primary objectives this study is to regulate glycogen levels, optimize energy levels and muscle tone.

3. Exercise - A physical activity involving sweat, that builds muscles and burns fat.

4. Hygiene - The routine of maintaining a clean body to avoid disease and sickness, and to prevent the contact of transmissible causes.

5. Stress is defined as a person's physiological reaction to an inner or outer stimulus, causing temporary mental imbalance.

6. Public Health - The study of the neighborhood to ensure a safe living environment to its population.

For more information on The Effect of Stress in the Immune System and The immune system functions please visit our website.

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=David_Urmann

zonkettenoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6065867564969618811.post-74550909985388466012008-09-18T05:44:00.000-07:002008-09-18T05:45:28.448-07:00Health, fitness pros will share lifestyle tipsFour Beverly-based health professionals plan to share their secrets with North Shore residents at an upcoming seminar, "How to Finally Take Control of Your Health and Fitness," which will double as a fundraiser for the Arthritis Foundation.

The event, to be held at the Cummings Center on Tuesday, Sept. 16, will feature a physical therapist and strength and conditioning specialist, a nutrition and lifestyle coach, a massage therapist, and a dentist, who have combined forces to present a proven strategy for achieving health and fitness goals, according to Dr. Michael Stare, the owner of Spectrum Fitness Consulting in Beverly.

"We want to give people the information that they desperately want ... and we'll raise some money for a good cause that's close to my heart," said Stare, who has several family members and friends who have suffered from juvenile rheumatoid arthritis.

Joining Stare will be his employee, Michelle Theriault, a holistic nutritionist and personal trainer; Dr. Benjamin Polan, a dentist; and massage therapist Lynnette Lovasco. All four work out of the Cummings Center.

In the past, Stare said they have held similar seminars in-house at Spectrum Fitness for 10 to 20 people. Holding Tuesday's event in a larger space allows the speakers to address more people.

"We have top-notch trainers and a lot of information to share, and we've been in our own small clinic for 2 1’Ñ2 years and have had a lot of success," Stare said. "Now it's time to spread the word a little more."

The group plans to debunk what Stare refers to as popular fitness myths of today — such as the success of circuit-training gyms, fad diets, weight loss pills, energy drinks and costly exercise devices — and provide concrete strategies for optimum health and fitness.

"We want to really conquer the misinformation and marketing hype by presenting true experts in the field," said Stare, adding that the seminar will provide the tools to achieve goals.

"The best-laid plan cannot work if it's not feasible," he said. "We show people how to get great results in the concept of the real world, because our patients and clients exist in the real world."

The addition of a massage therapist and dentist to the seminar's agenda, Stare said, are more tools for overall health. Massage is said to contribute to reduce stress, and healthy teeth contribute to a person's overall health.

The lifestyle aspect is an important, necessary piece of the puzzle, according to Theriault, who has been in the industry for more than 10 years.

"We can tell someone how do it, but they have to live it," she said.

If you go

What: How To Finally Take Control of Your Health and Fitness

When: Tuesday, Sept. 16 at 7 p.m., open to people 15 and older

Where: Conference Room 221E, 100 Cummings Center, Beverly

Cost: $15 donation to the Arthritis Foundation at the door

Info.: www.HealthyAndFit2008.com

More: More than $1,000 in door prizes given away to attendees

Michelle Theriault will explain:

The big, fat lies being spread about proper nutrition

Once and for all, the truth about carbohydrates

What food to eat for better health, that taste great

Dr. Benjamin Polan will reveal:

How addressing muscle imbalances around your jaw can relieve headaches and neck pain

Lynnette Lovasco will reveal:

Why massage is an invaluable tool to improve health

How massages can reduce stress

Why all massage is not the same

Dr. Michael Stare will reveal:

Why most weight-loss programs don't work

Proven strategies to lose weight forever

Myths that sabotage your results

How to treat and prevent injuries

The best ways to enhance performance

http://www.salemnews.com/pulife/local_story_255230254.html?keyword=topstory

zonkettenoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6065867564969618811.post-90364479042172901122008-08-10T06:52:00.000-07:002008-08-10T06:54:40.794-07:00Celiac diseaseAs many as one in every 100 to 200 persons in the United States has celiac disease, a condition resulting from an inappropriate immune response to the dietary protein gluten. The manifestations of celiac disease range from no symptoms to overt malabsorption with involvement of multiple organ systems and an increased risk of some malignancies. When celiac disease is suspected, initial testing for serum immunoglobulin A (IgA) tissue transglutaminase (tTG) antibodies is useful because it offers adequate sensitivity and specificity at a reasonable cost. A positive IgA tTG result should prompt small bowel biopsy with at least four tissue samples to confirm the diagnosis. However, 3 percent of patients with celiac disease have IgA deficiency. Therefore, if the serum IgA tTG result is negative but clinical suspicion for the disease is high, a serum total IgA level may be considered. Screening of asymptomatic patients is not recommended. The basis of treatment for celiac disease is adherence to a gluten-free diet, which may eliminate symptoms within a few months. Patients should also be evaluated for osteoporosis, thyroid dysfunction, and deficiencies in folic acid, vitamin B12, fat-soluble vitamins, and iron, and treated appropriately. Serum IgA tTG levels typically decrease as patients maintain a gluten-free diet. (Am Fam Physician 2007;76:1795-1802, 1809-10. Copyright [C] 2007 American Academy of Family Physicians.)

Celiac disease (or celiac sprue) is an autoimmune disorder with a prevalence of approximately 0.5 to 1 percent in the united states. (1, 2) it is associated with inflammation of the mucosa of the small intestine, which may result in villous atrophy. Celiac disease produces a variety of gastrointestinal symptoms that can begin at almost any age. Treatment consists of removal of gluten proteins from the diet, which improves and often eliminates the small intestine pathology.

Pathophysiology and Epidemiology

gluten proteins occur throughout our food supply and are relatively resistant to digestive enzymes. Incomplete digestion in the upper gastrointestinal tract results in peptide derivatives that are highly immunogenic to patients with celiac disease. In affected patients, after absorption in the small intestine these proteins interact with the antigen-presenting cells in the lamina propria causing an inflammatory reaction that targets the mucosa of the small intestine. Rye, wheat, and barley, alone or as ingredients in many processed foods, contain gluten and may elicit this immune response.

Two factors are involved in the development of celiac disease--consumption of gluten proteins and genetic predisposition. it is not completely understood how gluten sensitivity begins or whether early exposure to gluten proteins increases the risk of sensitivity. however, almost all patients with celiac disease express human leukocyte antigen (hla)-DQ2 or hla-DQ8, which facilitate the immune response against gluten proteins. (2) Concordance rates of 70 to 75 percent among monozygotic twins and 5 to 22 percent among first-degree relatives have been reported. (1,2,3) Patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus, Down syndrome, turner's syndrome, or an associated autoimmune disorder are at increased risk of celiac disease (Table 1 (1-5)).

Clinical Diagnosis

many patients with celiac disease have diarrhea, borborygmus, abdominal pain, and weight loss (Table 2 (6-11)). However, the disease can affect several organ systems, including the skin, liver, nervous system, bones, reproductive system, and endocrine system. 12,13 Dermatitis herpetiformis (Figure 1), a pathognomonic skin eruption, occurs in 10 to 20 percent of patients with celiac disease. (14)

Because the small intestine can compensate if the degree of involvement is limited, many patients (up to 38 percent) are asymptomatic. (2,15) The disease is often diagnosed only through careful attention to clinical signs such as iron deficiency anemia or osteoporosis, through screening of patients at increased risk, or through other testing. One report found that up to 36 percent of patients with celiac disease had previously received a diagnosis of irritable bowel syndrome. (9) Common conditions that should be considered in the differential diagnosis are listed in Table 3. (10) a suggested diagnostic approach to patients with possible celiac disease is summarized in Figure 2.

[FIGURE 1 OMITTED]

[FIGURE 2 OMITTED]

Diagnostic Tests

No single test has been universally accepted as the standard for diagnosing celiac disease. However, serologic testing and small bowel biopsy are highly sensitive and specific in making the diagnosis, particularly in patients with symptoms suggestive of celiac disease and in those at increased risk (e.g., those with a family history of the disease, those with an associated autoimmune disorder). (16) Diagnostic testing must be performed while the patient is on a diet that includes gluten-containing foods.

Patients with persistent gastrointestinal symptoms such as diarrhea, malabsorption, weight loss, abdominal pain, gas, and bloating should be evaluated for celiac disease. Diagnostic testing should also be considered in patients with premature osteopenia or osteoporosis, unexplained iron deficiency anemia, or unexplained liver abnormalities, and in high-risk patients with any of these findings or unexplained gastrointestinal symptoms (Table 46). Screening in asymptomatic patients is not recommended.
http://findarticles.com

zonkettenoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6065867564969618811.post-15561799739631839432008-08-01T18:52:00.000-07:002008-08-01T18:53:33.488-07:00Manual and Electric WheelchairsThere are many things that can be used to help improve the mobility of a person who is mobility challenged, but the wheelchair has been, for decades, the most common type of mobility equipment available.

Manual wheelchairs are still very popular, and thanks to innovations during the 1920's and 1930's, today's manual wheelchairs are very compact, lightweight, and dependable. Electric wheelchairs have also changed significantly since the first Electric Klien Chair, which is named for its inventor George Klien.

The modern electric wheelchair is much more durable and rugged than the first electric wheelchairs developed during the 1950's. Many use a mid wheel drive system that helps increase stability and maneuverability. They also have a much larger range, with many able to travel over 20 miles on a single charge.

Most of these types of mobility vehicles still utilize the joystick control system, which can be configured for use on either side of the chair. While this is still the most common type of control, several other options are available for those that can not easily operate the control with their hands. There are also remote control devices available that allow the electric wheelchair to be controlled by a third party, such as a nurse.

The electric wheelchair is popular among those old and young, as well as those that have varied mobility. Many of those who could not operate a manual wheelchair, are allowed greatly increased mobility by using an electric wheelchair. Many of those who are able to operate a manual wheelchair, choose not to, because usually an electric wheelchair will generally provide much more functionality.

Maintaining an electric wheelchair does not generally require too much effort. One of the most important things is often the easiest and that is to make sure that you follow a proper charging regiment. If you use your electric wheelchair constantly throughout the day, then you will want to start charging it as soon as you are done and leave it charging all night. On the other hand, if you only use your chair once or twice a week, you will probably not need to charge the chair every night, but can likely get by only charging it every 3 or 4 days. Overcharging the chair or undercharging the chair can greatly reduce the life of the battery.

In addition to maintaining a proper charging regiment, it is also very important to check the battery connections periodically. You should be checking for loose connections and tightening any that you find. You should not experience corrosion, like you often see on a car battery, but if you do make certain you clean it away. A solution of baking soda and water is usually as effective as anything you could buy in a store to clean corrosion. Just apply the baking soda paste and let it sit on the corroded area for several minutes, before scrubbing the area with a small brush.

An electric or manual wheelchair can provide a great way to improve mobility and improve the independence and freedom of its rider.

Brad Brubaker is familiar with manual and electric wheelchairs To learn more about these and other types of mobility aids, visit US Medical Supplies

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Brad_Brubaker

zonkettenoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6065867564969618811.post-49710074266606233412008-07-27T04:48:00.000-07:002008-07-27T04:50:06.494-07:00Pure Drinking WaterWant to improve your health? I know what you're thinking: reduce the amount of trans fats and saturated fats you eat and consume more vegetables and fresh foods. That's certainly a start, but the best thing you can do today for your well-being is to include more pure drinking water into your daily regimen.

But let me define what I mean by pure. You see, most people fall for marketing hype and outright scams and fancy bottle labels. They think, for example, that expensive bottled water at the store is pure. Meanwhile, people in the know, like the US FDA, has publicly stated that bottled water is no safer than tap water. That's right...tap water, the free stuff that already comes right out of your sink!

Before we get into a further discussion of contaminants to avoid, we need to discuss pure drinking mineral water. Why minerals and not just pure water?

Because you actually don't want your water filtration product to filter out everything, that's why. You see, we need minerals for good health. Minerals like calcium and magnesium and potassium to name just a few.

Most water filtering products on the market, especially the very popular reverse osmosis types, actually remove everything, including these minerals we need for optimal health!

Ironically, people using these types of systems may develop mineral deficiencies over the long term. That's why you only want pure drinking mineral water...meaning water that is pure from bad contaminants but still has the good stuff that we need.

It's a sad fact that because of pollution, our water systems are no longer pure. In an ideal world, we'd just be able to turn on the tap and drink the water that flows from it.

Many people, in fact, do....but they are making a grave mistake. There are over 2,100 known cancer-causing toxins in the United States water supply. This is not an exaggeration to scare you. It's a simple fact. This kind of information is available to anyone in the public who wants to search out the truth.

I mean, have you ever wondered why cancer rates are skyrocketed with no end in sight? Now you know what my own suspicions are.

Because of this dire situation, it's absolutely critical that if you want to maintain optimal health you should spend some money and invest into a water filtration product that removes these dangerous substances, leaving only pristine water.

Most of these systems can be purchased and set up by any competent plumber. So don't think of it as a huge burden. Within a day you could rest easy in the knowledge that you, your family, and friends, are imbibing pure drinking mineral water that will improve your health, and no longer have to worry about all the herbicides, pesticides, pharmaceutical drugs, chlorine, and other nasty chemicals that invade our water systems continuously, despite our best efforts.
Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Albrecht_Bracher

zonkettenoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6065867564969618811.post-90976274214056741632008-07-19T03:42:00.000-07:002008-07-19T03:43:53.083-07:00Agustin's Yoga Routine

zonkettenoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6065867564969618811.post-64360116460241765302008-07-13T01:01:00.000-07:002008-07-13T01:02:27.947-07:00A New Way to Get Fit with Free Health and Fitness Tips for Busy People Delivered Straight to Your Cell Phone from the Health and Fitness Experts at SpFitness tips for busy people -- now delivered straight to their mobile phones. This occurs when hair follicles become sensitive to the hormones androgens, which causes the hair follicles to shrink, causes a general thinning of the hair on top.

In both male ad female hair loss, the hair follicles starts off large and thick, then gradually shrinks to produce thinner, finer hair. Where as in males hair loss will result in complete baldness. In women however, the hair follicles reacts more randomly to androgens, resulting in a more diffuse thinning of hair over the crown, and and will generally keep the frontal hair line.

Female hair loss is quite often inherited from generation to generation. Symptoms of hair loss tends to exhibit after puberty, particularly after child birth, slowly experiencing thinning hair on top over the years. Stress is another common cause of hair loss. Other causes include iron deficiency, thyroid conditions and too much hair treatments like perming or colouring.

Treatments

There are good treatments out there for female hair loss. But firstly, it is best to see a doctor to get a thorough check up.

Over the counter lotions containing Minoxidil ( Regaine ) works well in both male and female. The 2% solution is recommended for females and the 5% for males. Some experts says that the 5% is far more effective in female hair loss. The reason the 5% is not approved for females is that it can cause hair growth on the edges of their forehead, and also itching and drying of the scalp. These side effects though are quickly reversed once the treatment is stopped or the concentration is lowered.

The prescription only drug Finasteride ( Propecia 1mg or Proscar 5mg ) has been used successfully in males for hair loss for a number of years. it was originally used in men for prostate disease. it works by blocking the enzyme that converts Testosterone to DHT. It's used for female hair loss has not been approved because they've found that it can cause serious birth defects in women. A number of experts though has successfully and safely trialled in women who can't or won't be getting pregnant. It has shown to have stopped female hair loss and even grown new hairs.

There are some side effects to Finasteride. Some women has experienced hair growth around the hair line and some found the drug can lower their libido. Although with discontinuation with treatment these side effects are reversible.

Another prescription drug that works well is Aldactone ( Spironalactone ). This is a diuretic and Testosterone inhibitor. It works well in some women, but some women found they experienced breast tenderness and other annoying side effects. There are reports that birth control pills high in estrogen can work by overriding testosterone levels, decreasing the chance of androgen related female hair loss. Vitamin supplements like Biotin, Zinc and Iron supplements has also been used to treat female hair loss.
http://www.ezinearticles.com/?Treatments-For-Female-Hair-Loss&id=1277974

zonkettenoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6065867564969618811.post-38386373437069267992008-06-14T05:02:00.000-07:002008-06-14T05:03:12.134-07:00Health Fitness Tips How to Exercise with Water Bottle Weight

zonkettenoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6065867564969618811.post-67693346868885992532008-05-30T23:55:00.000-07:002008-05-30T23:56:31.497-07:00Are You Really Ready To Lose Weight?Losing weight can be as difficult a hurdle to cross as stopping smoking for a person who has been smoking for a long time. This can be especially if you have been eating poorly for some time and your weight has been a long-term problem.

Over eating, like smoking, is a habit that can be very hard to break for most people. To get to the shape that they desire, many people will yo-yo back and forth from one diet to another for the majority of their lives.

Again, by comparing a person who is trying to lose with weight with one who is trying to quit smoking, that person will have a much better chance of succeeding once they make up their minds and commit to the idea of doing what it takes once and for all.

Anytime that you start a weight-loss program you really need to commit to doing what it takes to reach your goal,or you may set yourself up to fail.

Many people first have to conquer what goes on in their mind, even more than what they are putting into their stomach. You need to deal with the mental issues first before in order to have the best chance to lose weight and get in shape.

If you get rid of certain habits in your life you can also train your mind to accept a new lifestyle as what is normal for you. Mind power can make or break whether you are able to maintain the habits that will ensure a lasting change.

Most of our habits have become second nature to us and we don't really think about them. By turning bad habits into positive changes in your lifestyle, you can get to the point where you won't have to constantly focus on watching your weight.
http://www.ezinearticles.com

zonkettenoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6065867564969618811.post-56000379693226618522008-05-10T07:14:00.000-07:002008-05-10T07:16:33.315-07:00Important Reasons To Quit SmokingThe reasons to quit smoking are numerous, and can be seen on a daily basis. On the other hand, several smokers do not find any effective reasons to quit smoking cigarettes. Aside from the obvious risk of lung cancer, stroke and heart attacks there are other medical reasons to quit smoking. If improving your own health doesn't give you enough reasons to quit smoking, it may be interesting to note how smoking has an impact on those around you. The impact on the health of the children in a household where there is a smoker is evident and should be a consideration when looking at reasons to quit smoking. There are other reasons to quit smoking and some of these include just the monetary aspect of smoking.

If you smoke, you are more likely to wrinkle at an earlier age and have deeper wrinkles. You are more likely to become impotent or have difficulty in maintaining an erection when you reach middle age. You are almost four times as likely to develop cervical cancer compared with nonsmokers. You are three times more likely to get middle ear infections than nonsmokers. You are also more likely to snore, which your partners are sure to find anti-social.

Smoking accelerates the hardening and narrowing process in your arteries: it starts earlier and blood clots are two to four times more for those that smoke. A single cigarette can reduce the blood supply to your skin for over an hour. The blood vessels in the eye are sensitive and can be easily damaged by smoke, causing a bloodshot appearance and itchiness. Smoking damages blood vessels, inhibiting blood flow.

Lungs that are constantly irritated by tobacco smoke often start producing too much mucus, which narrows the breathing passages and makes it harder to breathe. This can lead to an uncontrollable cough (so common its easily recognizable as smokers cough), and other breathing problems as the lungs struggle to cope with all the chemicals in tobacco smoke. Your lungs are filling with icky black tar; your heart is working harder to pump blood around your body. Besides doing damage to the lungs that can lead to cancer, smoking hurts the lung's fragile tissues in other ways.

Cigarettes contain more than 4000 chemical compounds and at least 400 toxic substances. Cigarettes have dozens of cancer causing chemicals in each one. As a smoker you are more likely to develop over 14 different types of cancer, and damage nearly every part of your body. Nicotine is addictive and increases cholesterol levels in your body. Nicotine and toxins in tobacco kill nerve endings around the mouth and nose, reducing your ability to taste and smell. Nicotine is more addictive than heroine or cocaine.
http://www.ezinearticles.com

zonkettenoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6065867564969618811.post-13674393305431379422008-04-26T23:35:00.000-07:002008-04-26T23:37:50.785-07:00Tips On How To Improve Blood CirculationGood circulation is important in preventing illness such as heart disease and diabetes. These conditions are so common that if you yourself don't have one of them, it's a sure bet you know someone who does. Preventions is key when it comes to blood circulation problems, so learning how to improve blood circulation should be a priority for anyone who wants to enjoy good health. Here are some basic steps to increasing the health of your blood circulation.

It is vital to keep your circulatory system flowing and this can be done with regular exercise. Doctors always tell us we need more exercise, but how many of us actually get up and do it? As you get older, inactive lifestyle habits can get in the way of exercise. Everyone knows what it's like to start a new exercise program and then get tired of it a few weeks or months later. Take your fitness level into account when crafting your own exercise program, and make sure that the activity or activities you do are enjoyable. If walking is your exercise of choice, appoint certain days and times to do this activity. Consistent exercise improves circulation and decreases blood pressure.

Is it possible to learn how to improve blood circulation without increasing physical activity?

Both your circulation and the overall health of your heart can be improved by the use of certain herbs. Use cayenne pepper to help strengthen and tone your capillaries and vessels. To reduce high blood pressure, try taking Hawthorne berries and rosemary. One way to lower cholesterol, maintain healthy blood pressure, and generally improve the health of your circulatory system is to eat garlic and onions. Consult your health care professional before taking any new herbs.

Blood flow can become better with improved body functions, which is the result of a proper diet. Improving blood circulation is most improved by an adequate intake of Vitamin E. Vitamin E is usually not sufficient in the bodies of heart and diabetes patients. A number of studies have evidenced that getting enough of this nutrient actually makes the body need less oxygen, break down clots, and jump starts the formation of clot-busting blood vessels. For foods with a lot of Vitamin E, look for avocados, nuts, and unrefined vegetable oil.

Cholin, vitamin B6 and inositol are key players in the fight for a healthy blood cholesterol level. You need to include an adequate amount of these vitamins for optimal circulation and strong blood vessels. Consuming a diet with adequate amounts of these vitamins has been shown to reduce medication requirements, lower cholesterol levels and incidence of heart attacks, as a clinical study of heart patients in the 1950s demonstrated.

Many people have successfully learned how to improve blood circulation through dietary changes and regular exercise. Remember to hold off on taking any new supplements or starting a new exercise program until you've discussed it with your doctor.
http://www.ezinearticles.com

zonkettenoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6065867564969618811.post-64867556057050931162008-04-13T07:37:00.000-07:002008-04-13T07:38:26.551-07:00Lasik Eye SurgeryPeople believe that eyes are the window to their soul, so why not maintain their appearance and make them look beautiful entrance to the inner human being. Modern eye surgery techniques have improved the vision and appearance to several windows to the soul.

Lasik eye surgery is the latest and the most innovative eye surgery technique that helps hundreds and millions of people to improve and vision and have a better outlook towards life with their beautiful eyes. This surgery is believed to be a blessing in disguise.

LASIK stands for Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis and is a surgical procedure that reduces the dependency of an individual on contact lenses and glasses. This surgical or clinical eye surgery uses an excimer laser to permanently change the shape of the cornea, covering of the front of the eye. As compared to other eye surgery techniques, lasik helps in keeping a large part of the cornea surface intact that makes the patient more comfortable and have better vision more quickly. Lasik eye surgery was first performed in 1990 in the U.S. clinical trials. This was disocvered by Dr.Lucio Buratto and Dr.Loannis Pallikaris by blending the two prior eye surgery techniques, Keratomileusis and photo refractive keratectomy effectively. Further to it, Dr Jose Barraquer developed a device known as 'Microkeratome' that was made fit o cut thin flaps in the cornea and modify its shape. This modification or alternation of the shape of the cornea was known as keratomileusis.

This breakthrough of eye surgery technique gave a new vision to the eye treatments and changed the complete perspective of an individual. Lasik in India was guided by Shroff Hospital that has opened eyes to a whole new world. Shroff hospital is the pioneer of Lasik eye surgery and has got several years of experience in eye treatments.

The procedure of lasik technique is also as simple as the results. An antibiotic is first used to minimize any kind of infection in the cornea and then the patient is sedated. Eyes of the patient are cleaned and local anesthetic is used to get alleviate pain during the surgery. Thereafter, eyes are held apart with a lid speculum and a ring is placed on the eye. Suction is created using high pressure and microkeratome is used to cut a flap in the cornea. The flap is folded back to reveal the underlying stroma, the mid-section of the cornea.

Then Eximer Laser from a computer-controlled laser vaporizes a portion of the stroma in a controlled manner. After the stroma is remolded, the flap is replaced and is secured through natural adhesion until healing occurs. This gives a much improved vision and changes the appearance of the eye with ease and comfort. Lasik is a successful treatment in accurately correcting levels of myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism.

Most of the patients with eye problems are happy after the discovery of lasik eye surgery but like other clinical procedures, the risks are also involved. Therefore, it is important to understand the limitations and complications before planning to go for this kind of eye surgery. The most common risk factors associated with lasik eye surgery are lost vision, debilitating visual symptoms and severe dry eye syndrome. Therefore, weigh the risks and benefits of lasik, depending on personal value system and avoid being influenced by friends, relatives and doctors.
http://www.ezinearticles.com/

zonkettenoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6065867564969618811.post-4316622567594838932008-04-02T22:48:00.000-07:002008-04-01T22:49:08.120-07:00What is a Swedish Massage? One of the common misconceptions of the massage industry by the public is what constitutes a massage. One of the comments heard by massage therapists from clients when a Swedish massage is through is, "You didn't work on my knots". To which the reply is, you asked for a relaxing Swedish Massage. In order to alleviate this common problem good communication is needed both on the part of the client and the on the part of the receptionist and the massage therapist. At the intake process, I always tell the client what will take place during the massage. And what modalities I use during their massage. When the client is booking the massage it may be necessary to explain the difference between the modalities of massage. And for the client to decide what type of massage is best for them at the time.

The client must take into consideration what their health and mental status is. If they're stressed to the max, they might want to consider a nice relaxing massage. If they have a lot of knots (adhesions), tightness in their muscles or a limited range of motion, they might wish to receive a therapeutic massage. Or they may wish a combination of the two. That being said, the client must consider what's best for them.

The first thing is to consider is what do you want the massage to accomplish? Are you looking for a nice relaxing massage or do you need the massage therapist to focus on certain sore, strained, tight or injured muscles? Why don't we take a look at the first choice of a nice relaxing massage.

The Moves of Swedish Massage

A Swedish massage consists of five types of strokes. The first is effleurage which are nice long flowing strokes with light pressure which warms up the muscles. This move is probably the most common when a massage is thought about.

The next is petrissage. Petrissage is a kind of a scooping motion that effects the surface muscles and the fascia. Fascia is the connective tissue that covers the entire body. Sometimes it becomes bound or stuck and needs to be loosened.

Another move is vibration. Vibration is the rhythmic shaking of the body to it's own rhythm. It feels very good and can actually put one to sleep.

An additional move is called friction. Friction is done to the muscle fibers in either a circular pattern or perpendicular to the way the muscle fiber runs.

The final move is called tapotement and can be one of several moves such as cupping, chopping, quacking or hacking and is probably the second most thought of move when one thinks about massage. It can be quite noisy so it's not done for very long and usually at the end of the session as this helps to awaken the sleeping client.

All of these moves are part of the basic Swedish massage and can be used by the massage therapist in any order at any time.

Flow

The flow of a Swedish massage is at a nice relaxing pace. No rushing or quick movements in this type of massage, except for the tapotement component. The recipients of a good Swedish massage usually fall fast asleep. And snoring is a compliment to the therapist.

The Benefits

The benefits of a Swedish massage are; hyperemia or a reddening of the skin or a blushing of the skin, increased blood flow which helps the body' s metabolism, the release of endorphins the amino acids that work as the body' s natural pain killer, and finally enhance immunity by stimulating lymph flow which is part of the body' s natural defense system.

Music

A Swedish massage session usually has a musical component to it as well. Nice relaxing music is played during the massage. The music varies according to the place of massage. For instance a massage franchise will play all of the same music approved by corporate. In a private or group practice, the therapist picks the music or in some cases lets the client pick their music or bring in their own CD's to play.

Lighting

Lighting is an important factor in a relaxing massage. After all, it's hard to relax when you're under spotlights or those God awful fluorescent lights. Side lighting or lamps are a good source of lighting as long as they have a dimmer control on them. Some therapists may even use candles in their practice, although fire laws may prevent the use of candles in an office building.

Enhancements

There are other things the therapist may add or add for an additional charge, such as aroma therapy, Reiki, salt scrubs or wraps.

There you have it, all the components of a nice relaxing Swedish massage. In the next article, I'll cover the topic of a therapeutic massage which uses deep tissue moves as the primary means to accomplish the massage.
http://www.ezinearticles.com/

zonkettenoreply@blogger.com0
