Viewers mourn together...

First of all, the crew of the Weekend Morning Show would like to express our deepest sympathies to Officer Joshua Miktarian's family, friends, and fellow officers.

This past weekend the live webchat that we conduct here on the Weekend Morning Show blog served an entirely new purpose than it has in the past. I was very proud that viewers took it upon themselves to use our webchat as an outlet to express their opinions and pay their respect to fallen Twinsburg Police Officer Joshua Miktarian.

Our chat received more than 1500 page views on Sunday as folks joined to share their memories, their condolences, and discuss with other viewers how such a tragedy could happen and what should be done to prevent events like this in the future. I'm sure that many in the live chat never even knew Officer Miktarian, but felt compelled to log on and share a kind word or two with those who did. This to me is the main reason to have a live webchat... to serve a place where viewers can come together and share in the stories that affect our lives either directly or indirectly.

Today we have Roo! She is a year and a half old Australian Cattle Dog/Corgi mix, who could use a good home. She loves to get her tummy scratched. She loves to play fetch. She's an active dog who would work well in a home with children. Please adopt a shelter animal today!

Starr Sightings: Inside Studio A - "A Somber Sunday"

Following the unfortunate fatal shooting of an officer over night, we decided to send Jeff out to cover a press conference to find out more details. Kim held down the fort in Studio A. With Dawn directing the last hour of the show, director Matt was able to post video to the web and stream the press conference live with the help of Julie at the desk. Producer Caitlin did a nice job of pulling together the changes for the show at the last minute. Great job to the weekend morning show team for pulling together to get the coverage on the air and web so our viewers were able to find out the latest information.

During the show, we had our live webchat up and running, as well as a live stream of the press conference. Jeff and Kim did a great job with covering the story in a respectful and professional way, as WKYC always does. The mood in Studio A was somber and serious today. Some of you may have been watching the live video from Studio A and could see all was calm here. Anytime we have a fallen officer, the newsroom is aware of the impact on the community and the atmosphere here shows this. We stay busy and bring you the latest coverage, but we all keeping the situation in perspective.

Although we didn't have too much time to chat here at WKYC with all of the breaking coverage, we appreciate all of you who logged on to share your thoughts and feelings on this tragedy, especially the family and friends of this fallen hero.

Hello Everyone!

I hope you are all enjoying your Saturday! I didn't realize how long it's been since I've posted something to the Weekend Morning Show Blog. Director Matt was kind enough to point that out to me! :) This is Matt's first weekend back since he became a new Dad! We are very happy to have him here again and wish him and his wife Danielle all the best with their new baby girl!

This morning we had a fun show! My favorite part of the show was the Oreo Licking Contest. I mean who doesn't like Oreo cookies?! They even left some for the crew to eat...I'm not sure but I think they are already gone!

One thing I want to remind everyone is that The Cleveland Science Center closes at 5 pm Saturday so you still have plenty of time to get out there and enjoy the NASA exhibit and all the fun things they have to do!

Well our Noon show is about to begin! Have a good weekend everyone!

Oreo Licking Contest..what??

So this may be the strangest segment ever on our morning show! Caitlin booked our local finalists for the first ever Oreo Lick Race...we had three local ladies on the show who were selected because they enter sweepstakes contests and entered one for the Oreo contest.

I might even enter if I could meet Peyton and Eli Manning, who started this contest! They had to lick the frosting out of the middle of the Oreos, then dip the cookies in milk and eat them. The ladies didn't win the finals but did really well. They even showed us their technique...Producer Caitlin asked if I would like to take part in our live Oreo contest...I passed on that chance.

Jeff and I both agree, we will never look at an Oreo the same again. The ladies were adorable and it was a fun way to end the newscast.

It was great that we were all back today together. Director Matt was back with us after welcoming his adorable little girl into the world. I think he may feel what many of us do, as we head back to work with little ones at home...that separation is so hard! His wife even sent him a photo on his cellphone during the newscast of little Mackenzie sleeping (but listening to our show!)

Big Fun Show was not so fun for Dawn

Our Technical Director Dawn will not be writing her usual "Big Fun Show" recap today. Dawn was not feeling well the entire show, so she went home right after we went off the air. She didn't even want any Oreos so she must have been sick.

Normally Dawn writes about the things she liked on the show, so in her place I will say that being the animal lover she is, I know that she enjoyed the story about the cow that acted like a person. Who didn't love the Oreo Licking contest? She also commented on how she liked all of the packages in today's show.

The "Re-Birth" of the Webchat

Hey Folks! Sorry for the lack of content on the blog, but I have been off for the last couple of weeks welcoming my new daughter into the world. Mackenzie Grace was born just over 2 weeks ago and since then I've been adjusting to life at home as "Dad".

This weekend however, I return to the weekend morning show for the first time in a long time and I'm hoping for a large turnout for our live webchat. I heard that over the last couple of weeks the live chat numbers have been down across the board. That's not what we're striving for. We need more chatters! Tell your friends, family, and anyone you can think who might be interested in participating in this rare opportunity to speak directly with the anchors during a live broadcast.

We will also once again have the live streaming camera up and running so that you never lose sight of what is going on in Studio A.

The "Big Fun Show"

Well it's Sunday! Another day off for Jeff and Kim. Kim is probably working in her garden and Jeff is probably getting ready for a bar-be-que. Bruce is here for the Today Show cut-ins and for our Weather Plus recordings.

It was a slow day at the station yesterday, but today the crew will be getting ready to do the Tribe pre-game show with Al Palowski. The Tribe lost last night, lets hope they beat the Twins today. Tune in next weekend, we'll be back on the air doing live web chatting and we'll also have some trivia questions from Bruce.

Esperanza means hope!

We all know how expensive college is today. When I went to Ohio University, I remember worrying every year whether I would have the money I needed, since I was paying for school myself. It was so stressful, so I can only imagine what it is like for students today. But for 39 Esperanza College Scholarship recipients, some of that worry is now lessened.

I was honored to be the emcee at Esperanza's Fiesta of Hope Scholarship Luncheon at Windows on the River Friday afternoon. There were 39 students and 44 scholarships given out, some students received two scholarships for their hard work. Esperanza started back in 1983 as an advocacy group for Latino students, back then one scholarship was given out. Over the years, the non profit group has awarded 500 scholarships!

This group of students was very impressive. They had a combined gpa of 3.4, they were student leaders at their schools and involved in community service. In all thanks to the corporate community and individual donors about $40,000 in scholarships were awarded yesterday. I was there to see the proud families and inspiring young people. What struck me was that without family support, this couldn't be possible. Young people need the help from their loved ones, pastors, teachers and greater community. It was clear they have it! Very impressive.

Esperanza's work is so important, when you look at the numbers. In Ohio, according to Education Week, only 48% of Latino students graduate from high school. These students I met yesterday are setting an example for everyone.

One of those students is Awilda-Ivette Santiago. She graduated from Strongsville High School. She will go to Ashland College in the fall to study business. Her proud mother took this picture of us. Way to go Awilda!

I also met Alicia Gonzalez, who graduated from John Hay's Early College High School. She will go to Ohio State to study nursing.

Good luck to all the recipients, and don't forget your hometown, Cleveland!

The Weekend Morning Show crew wants to send out a big congratulations to our Director Matt Babb and his wife, Danielle. They welcomed their first child, a beautiful baby girl yesterday evening.

Mackenzie Grace Babb was born at 6:24 p.m. on 6/24. New dad Matt says she is perfect! Here's a picture he sent us.

He'll be off the next couple of weeks to take care of his new baby girl.
