It is simply about relationships and letting go of grudges. It made me wonder if every parent feels like they have made mistakes that are difficult to forgive. I expected it to be a little too flippant with the subject matter for my tastes. But I was completely surprised. It was beautifully done and in a very reverent tone. It reminded me a lot of "The Work and the Glory" series. The events portrayed were real, with some creative license taken with a few characters to help the story make sense. I love reading books that bring real experiences to life and make me feel like I could have been a part of it. With this one I did. It started when Jesus was three and went through His entire life. New characters are introduced as well, including Joel Hammond and Caterina Giovanni, who each have chapters of their own.

I wasn't sure if I would be able to enjoy First Day, having not read Yearbook first. Many times when reading the second book in a series, it's hard to catch up. There was a little bit of that in the beginning, trying to figure out what was going on in situations that would be obvious to those who had read the first book.

I was pleasantly surprised, however, at how fast I was able to get into the story. The format was unconventional, with most of the story lines basically unrelated to each other, rather than telling different character's viewpoints of the same story. It didn't hold my attention as well as many of the other books I've read recently, but there is also one main story that is pretty compelling and pulls the reader through the book.

On the other hand, the book was fresh and interesting, and it was fun to see the lives of the different characters who were related in some ways, but completely individual in others, just as it is in our own lives.

All in all, I thought it was a good read with a few twists and turns thrown in to keep the reader on their toes. They are beautiful to listen to if you don't want to hear words. Lyndsi Houskeeper, the person who wrote all of these songs, did an amazing job communicating the message. I'm not a big music person but this was understandable and interesting to listen to. The singers are amazing and truly gifted. The musicians in it, all do a fantastic job.

The first track was called "More Like Him". It talks about being more like the Savior and to be steadfast and immovable. "No Greater Joy" is in the perspective of a mother. It shows a mothers love to a child and the importance of mothers. "The Work of His Hands" is about growing from our trials. One line is, "with every hill I climb, the view I find is perfectly grand." It helps you know that you can learn from the hard times to make the good even more wonderful. My favorite is, "That's a Friend". It's about being a true friend. A friend who sticks with you through thick and thin and lifts you up. They help you achieve the best and there's "no contest. No comparing. Pure compassion, Christ-like sharing." There are many more songs on this CD with beautiful messages in each. Maybe you will decide you want both! "In the Garden" is a short, condensed version of the Easter story. Now what?

The world makes single life look very appealing, you can have a career, date who you want, and the world is your oyster. "As Always, Dave" has a very different outlook. Most single members of the church want to find their Mr. or Mrs. Right and settle down to a life of happiness with an eternal companion. Jack Weyland portrays in his usual humorous way, that finding the right partner in life is not very easy, no matter where, or who you are. His characters in this book also learn that sometimes finding what they want in life is a matter of perspective and changing how they look at themselves. It reminded me a lot of a Robin Cook style medical thriller. I couldn't put it down. I was actually drawn into the character of Bria quite a bit more than Paul. Do you feel like you are constantly running two steps behind where you should be? Are you fairly clean and organized but know things could run a little more efficiently? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then this book is for you. It is divided into sections such as, "organize your home", "organize your time", and "organize your family", and inside each section is several two or three page chapters that tell how to quickly streamline a particular area, idea, thing or activity. You can read them in order or you can hop around. All can be accomplished quickly without giving too much time to it.

I love this book! I'm already a fairly organized person, and reading this book has just made me more effective in what I'm already trying to do! It's easy to read, each chapter is short and it makes a lot of sense. An example is the chapter about organizing cleaning supplies. I am constantly buying new cleaning supplies - forever searching for the perfect product. She suggests taking inventory of your supplies, having enough of the same product for both floors of your home, and then labeling them 'upstairs and downstairs'. Sounds simple enough - but I had never thought of it. Instead I carry my supplies from floor to floor, then dig through them all to find I'm out of toilet bowl cleaner. Through this small, quick, change, my life has become a little easier and more organized. I thought this book was very helpful overall. I only wish there was a few chapters on organizing food storage and recipes!Daynahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06178580946092458079noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6048297594095955130.post-74664066492983128362008-01-30T10:39:00.000-08:002008-01-30T11:13:24.492-08:00Presidents and ProphetsReviewed by Heather See, LDSFiles.com Staff Writer

Presidents and Prophets by Michael K. From Washington to Bush, each President and their relationship with the Mormons is explored, and we see the Church rising from obscurity to political clout as America's-fastest growing religion.

Familiar anecdotes are retold -- Wilford Woodruff's vision of the Founding Fathers; Joseph Smith calling on Martin Van Buren; Ezra Taft Benson serving in Eisenhower's cabinet; and Gordon B. Hinckley receiving the Presidential Medal of Freedom from George W. Bush. And, there is much, much more."

This book goes chapter by chapter about each President. It talks about the relationship that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints had with the American government. It starts out a little sketchy, understandably, there are fewer facts reported earlier in history, and becomes more detailed throughout the book.

What I really liked about this book was that you were able to read it when you wanted. You don't need to read it all in one sitting. There is no continuity, you can pick and choose where and what chapter you want to read.

This book is historically accurate and very informative. I am interested in history so I found it fascinating, however, I can see how one would find it boring if they have no interest in the subject.

"Presidents and Prophets" included letters that the Presidents of the church and country wrote back and forth to each other and about each other. It was neat to see how the church is involved. There were a lot of things I didn't know, for example, several Presidents received priesthood blessings. They were very God-fearing people.
