Its population nearly tripled from 1990 to 2000, and doubled again since then, according to census estimates released last week.

But Culver, a self-labeled 75-year-old country boy who still cherishes his copy of the 1906 Sears and Roebuck catalog, is not just a man out of step with this century. He was out of step with the last one too.

In 1975, a Tribune article declared him to be among the last of a dying breed--farmers who work their fields with draft horses, the massive beasts that once pulled everything from plows to streetcars.

Thirty-one years later, Chicagoland farm bureau officials say that Culver is no longer one of the last. He is the last.

it was perfectly breezy there late this morning ... when i'd finished ripping weeds out of the front garden & shovelling some neighbor-dog poop & all & i was sitting getting air-cooled in the breeze looking at the birds & the lake & perfect puffy clouds & blue ... thinking words that might work here & i got some ... but now i forget ... i guess that means i'm on vacation

had some rain this morning & it prevented the walk ... but little green things in the garden are happy ... a bit after one dom & i walked out into the humid world & it felt really good ... to me ... and there was this nice wind in the tall grass ... so i walked with the eye of terrence malick ... have you seen The New World? no matter ... i think he's got long shots of tall wavy grass in every film ...

just read the short 33 1/3 book Ramones ... a very sensible take on punk notions & the band ... then i launched into this other short one on basquiat (a remaindered taschen with really cool pictures)

& watched The Grave of the Fireflies ... so ... with all this it seems i'm well into summer mode ... & down to mom & meg tomorrow ...

reading calvino's Hermit in Paris: Autobiographical Writings ...

Among the Invisible Cities there is one on stilts, and its inhabitants watch their own absence from on high. Maybe to understand who I am I have to observe a point where I could be but am not. Like an early photographer who poses in front of the camera and then runs to press the switch, photographing the spot where he could have been but isn't. Perhaps that is the way the dead observe the living, a mixture of interest and incomprehension.

a constant drizzle today ... a good one for reading ... and some parts of the garden are starting to look a bit respectable ... here around the statue the gangly tall spiderwort is doing very well & the lavender's holding its own down below with a tiny bit of expansion from last year ... the shasta daisy to the statue's left is booming along ... and the grass back there is doing something but is acting kind of wimpy ... elsewhere, little dollops of nasturtium leaves are popping up ... should have some show in a few weeks ... if i can keep the squirrels off ... wish i could train them to eat the mint ...
