Reflecting on the Word

These two stories are quite touching, perhaps because they involve so much touching—forbidden touching, as a matter of fact. The father starts it off by falling at Jesus' feet and begging Jesus to help his dying daughter: "(C)ome lay your hands on her that she may get well and live" (Mark 5:23). Only touching her will do.

Then as Jesus is passing through the crowd, a woman suddenly appears on the scene, reaching out to Jesus and saying to herself: "If I but touch his clothes, I shall be cured" (5:28). Jesus knows immediately that he's been touched: "Who has touched my clothes?" he asks (5:30). And the disciples wryly observed that the crowd is… well, crowding him… so how can you ask "Who touched me?"

It is important to remember that because the woman was bleeding, a condition that made her "unclean" according to the law of Moses, her touch would have made Jesus unclean. However, her touching jesus has the opposite effect: the bleeding stops and she is made clear once again.

When word comes that the little girl is dead, Jesus calls on the father to set aside fear and put on faith. Arriving at the house, Jesus goes in and takes the child by the hand and says, "Little girl, I say to you, arise!" (Mark 5:41). Sixteen times in Mark's Gospel Jesus touches or takes someone by the hand. She does arise and he tells them to bring her some food. Again, touching her would have made jesus unclean, by instead his touch clenses her of death's hold.

Two desperate people—a dying girl and a bleeding woman. Jesus touches them and they both touch him—the woman through her own faith, the little girl through the faith of her father. It seems that healing depends on a flow between healer and the one being healed. The great new is that God allows a proxy.

OUR THANKS TO SISTER MARILYN

Sister Marilyn has been part of our parish life for almost ten years. She worked with parishioners to implement spiritual renewal processes with the parish renewal weekend experience, as well as the week-long parish centennial mission. She visited sick and homebound parishioners, and coordinated outreach to the catholic patients at St. Margaret hospital. She worked on the parish Christmas gift project and coordinated outreach to Bethlehem haven, a shelter for homeless women in downtown Pittsburgh. She also served for one year as the interim principal at our parish school. We thank her for her life time dedication to the church and our diocese. (As a Millvale Franciscan, Sister Marilyn stands in the tradition of the Franciscan sisters who have well served our parish since 1925!!)

Starting July 1^st sister will no longer be a full time staff member of our parish, but she will continue her ministry with the Eucharistic ministers at St. Margaret hospital. Sister Marilyn told me that "being a Franciscan, I don't want a fancy farewell"! So we respect her wishes and thank her for her continuing ministry at St. Margaret hospital and her participation with us at mass here at St. Scholastica. Fr. Ken

Haiti currently holds the dubious distinction of being the poorest country in the Western hemisphere, with a majority of it's people living in subhuman conditions. St. Scholastica parish is taking an active role in opening our hearts and our wallets to our brothers and sisters in Haiti. We would like your help. Over the course of the next several months we will print a series of articles to help acquaint you with Haiti and the efforts to relieve the pain of so many people.

CATHOLIC CONVERSATIONS

"Catholic Conversations" is a series that aims for informative, lively, and interactive talk on subjects related to faith. Join us on Wednesday evening, July 8, at 7:30 in the Pastoral Center as we welcome our own Jamie Dillon, parish director of Catholic youth ministry and religious education. Our topic is "Nurturing Your Teen's Faith." If there are teens in your life, take advantage of this opportunity to tap into Jamie's wide experience, and to share your own experience and support with others. There is no registration or fee for this event.

BAPTISM PREPARATION

A preparation session for the parents of children who are scheduled to be baptized in the parish will be held on Monday evening, June 29, at 7:30 in the parish office. The session will provide parents an opportunity to reflect upon the meaning of the sacrament and to walk through the ceremony itself. Baptisms are normally celebrated on the second and fourth Sundays of each month. Please make arrangements for the baptism itself with the parish secretary at least two weeks before your desired date. If you plan to attend the June 29 session, please let Andy Bechman know (see the staff contact information in this bulletin).

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

Don't forget to register your middle schooler for Camp Helping Hand July 15-17 9:00-2:00. We will be working with habitat for humanity.

Today our group leaves for our mission trip to Appalachia. We will return next Saturday with a special youth mass at 5:00 pm. Please keep us in your prayers this week and consider joining us for mass on Saturday

SPIRITUAL SUPPORTS FOR THE AGING PROCESS

This one day program is presented by Gateway Hospice and St. Bernadette Parish on Wednesday, July 15th at St. Bernadette Parish in Monroeville. The topic for the 1pm session is "Opportunity for Seniors to reflect on how God works through the different seasons of their lives." During the 7pm session Fr. Scott will offer suggestions on how to spiritually accompany senior parents, spouses, family and friends. The programs are free to attend and all are welcome.

PETER'S PENCE COLLECTION

Next weekend, June 27-28, the annual Peter's Pence Collection will be taken. This annual collection enables the Holy Father to respond with emergency financial assistance to those throughout the world who suffer from was, oppression, disease and natural disasters. This annual collection is a powerful way for Catholics around the world to shed the Light of Christ on those who are most in need. Please be as generous as your circumstances allow.

Reflecting on the Word

Going to movies these days can be an immersion in blood. I go to movies fairly regularly and friends in the parish will ask me my reactions now and again. Often over the years, I have found myself responding, "It's well made, but… it's pretty bloody." Or I'm not sure if you want to see all this bloodshed"

It might be surprising to listen to the three readings that have to do not just with shedding blood, but sprinkling it on people, as Moses did out in the desert, and presenting Jesus as the great high priest who goes into the sanctuary bearing his own blood, which will "cleanse our consciences from dead works" (Hebrews 9:14) so we can worship the living God.

And then there is the more familiar reading of Mark's account of the Last Supper, where Jesus tells his disciples to drink his blood. Perhaps we have gotten used to hearing these words since they are spoken at every Mass. But if you stop and think about it they are rather shocking.

In the biblical world blood is sacred, blood is life. From the beginning animals were offered in sacrifice. But with the offering of the body and blood of Christ, a new relationship has been entered with our God. Through Jesus' gift of his body and blood, salvation was won for us and is present to us when we gather in his name to praise the Father.

MADONNA DELLA CIVITA SOCIETY

Immaculate Conception-St. Joseph Parish in Bloomfield will be having it's Annual Madonna Della Civita Feast Day Mass and Procession on Sunday, July 19, 2009 at 11:30 a.m. in the Immaculate Conception Church on Edmond Street. The Mass will include Italian music and a procession with the Madonna immediately following. Everyone is welcome to attend.

WELCOME, SR. DOROTHY, NEW CDTCA PRINCIPAL!

I am pleased to announce that the Search Committee for our new principal has chosen Sister Dorothy Dolak, a Sister of Charity of Nazareth (formally "Vincentian Sisters of Charity), to be our new principal for the upcoming school year. Sister Dorothy has experience as an elementary and secondary school teacher, as well as elementary school principal (most recently at St. Sebastian School in Ross Township). Sister Dorothy has also been a Nursing Home and Adult Day Care Administrator.

After accepting the principal position in our school, Sister Dorothy wrote me: "I accept the position of principal at Christ the Divine Teacher Catholic Academy with much joy and excitement. Your school has an excellent reputation. As I take on this endeavor, I pray that I will be able to uphold the tradition of those who came before me and continue to offer quality Catholic education to the students of the school. I look forward to meeting and working with the staff and families of the children."

I want to thank members of the Search Committee who devoted many hours and meetings to this process: Ann Pilewski, Mary Ellen Maher, Tish Marisco, Bill Thomasmeyer and Joanne Saunders.

Lastly, I know I speak for the school community in thanking Mr. John Marino and his administrative assistant, Mrs. Ellen Kajder, for their hard and dedicated work for these past six years. As a Marine, Mr. Marino has truly been "semper fidelis", "always faithful". The whole school community will miss both of you greatly, but we are grateful for all your talents and energies to help our school excel in academics, as well as in our Catholic Traditions.

RCIA UPDATE

As the Easter season closes, the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) changes focus again. We are still in the period of mystagogy, when our new Catholics are "led into the mysteries" of Christian living. Rather than meeting weekly, however, we will explore the experience of Christian living within the normal life of the St. Scholastica community. Over the next year, our new adult members, Gary Wiant and Heather Fuller, will participate in various activities and events while keeping in touch with the RCIA team. This weekend, we will be working alongside the regulars who package pastries for Nancy Heil's work with homeless persons.

We would like to commend Heather and Gary for their continuing commitment to the RCIA, along with their spouses Jason Fuller and Johanna Wiant. RCIA Team members Bernadine Bonessa and Clark Chilson were faithful companions to our new Catholics along the way, and Leslie Forney helped the team in the fall. We are also grateful to Scott Dillon, Carl Macino, and Sr. Pat Baker for sharing their time and experience with us. Also, thanks to the whole parish for your participation in the rites, your prayers, and your friendliness toward our new members.

If you know someone who might wish to become a Catholic, please urge him or her to learn about the RCIA. Pamphlets titled "How Do I Become Catholic" are available at the entrances to the church, and include contact information.

A CHURCH ALIVE

This weekend we celebrate the feast of Pentecost—often called "the birthday of the Church." On Pentecost, according to the account we hear from the second chapter of Acts of the Apostles, the gift of the Holy Spirit enables the disciples of Jesus to go out boldly and spread the gospel message. As the story in Acts continues, the Spirit leads the community through many changes. It is a comfort to know that the same Spirit is present among us as we face our own era's challenges.

In Pittsburgh, Bishop Zubik is leading a reorganization of the diocese into four regional vicariates, which are scheduled to begin operation on October 1. As Robert Lockwood summarized the role in a recent Pittsburgh Catholic article, the regional vicar will "bring the vision of the bishop to the people" of his region. "He will encourage the diocesan-wide program of Envisioning Ministry, where neighboring parishes work together to determine how they might best serve all the faithful in their area in the years ahead." Bishop Zubik has written: "Regional vicars will have the authority from me to pull people together and get things done on a local level. Regional vicariates mean parishes working together — sharing resources, sharing people, sharing ideas, sharing the faith — simply put, being 'The Church Alive!'" To keep abreast of both the vicariate organization and the wider Envisioning Ministry effort, watch the Pittsburgh Catholic.

As we enter this period of change in our diocese, it is good to recall that, on the first Pentecost, the Holy Spirit came upon all the members of the community, not just a few. Each of us has a role to play in the Church's Spirit-guided response to the signs of our times. One of these signs—the rapidly decreasing number of priests available for service in the diocese—will call for significant changes in the life of our parishes. Let each of us do our share in the years ahead to discern the path God calls us to take and to work together to assure that the Gospel is proclaimed boldly in word and deed in our time and place.

CHILDREN'S LITURGY OF THE WORD

The Children's Liturgy of the Word at the 9 a.m. Mass has concluded its season; it will resume in the fall. We are grateful to our present group of adult leaders: Jamie Dillon, Sharon Doherty, Natalie Gillespie, Sue Goodwin, Wendy McCorkle, Jennifer Perkins, and Andrew Bechman. Natalie took on the coordinator role this year and did a splendid job. Thanks also to Madeline Tolge and to members of our Youth Group who provided valuable support.

We also wish to acknowledge the contributions of several leaders who have retired from the ministry. Maribeth Donnelly and Mary Jo Dunlap gave years of faithful service to the children. Judy Granato deserves special mention. She was the founder of the ministry nearly a decade ago. That St. Scholastica has a place for our children to hear and reflect on the Scriptures in a way that is appropriate to their age is due in very large part to Judy's vision and dedication. The parish owes her our gratitude.

Finally, we are grateful to the parish children, who have been well-behaved, receptive, and eager to participate during the Children's Liturgy. It is a great privilege to share the Word of God with them.

YOUTH INFORMATION

If you are a middle school or high school student that would like to sing or play an instrument join us at 330 for rehearsal. After mass we will have a potluck dinner AND an Aspinwall-wide scavenger hunt. All families are welcome!
