I had the weekend free from work so me and some friends decided to take advantage of the great weather and convene the Mojito club. We bought some quality rum, lots of mint and crushed some ice. We then made our way to the park for an afternoon of fun in the sun.

What followed was everything you'd expect from a day of mojito drinking: Dance-fighting (capoeira), hand standing, drink spilling, sun-burning and a heck of a lot of fun.
As the sun was setting, we bought a disposable grill and roasted some sausages before heading back to my apartment and then on to the bars. It really was a great day.

I have always been a sucker for cheesy pop-punk. And this video is the cheesiest and poppiest punk i have seen in a while. It includes all the classics, angstful teens rebelling against their parents (from the point of view of a ginger). They maybe douchy but goddamn they can right a catchy tune.

One of the things i'm doing to get ready for my thesis defense is to catch up with danish business news (i tend to only follow Canadian and American sources). One of the big stories is about a IT businessman, Stein Bagger, and how he defrauded danish banks and investors to the tune of $210 millionn (usd). I found this on his wikipedia page...

Stein Bagger claimed that he had several academic degrees, including a MBA and a PhD in International Business from "San Francisco Technical University". It has been since revealed that such a university does not exist. After reporters inquired about the alleged degrees, Bagger hired an American actress to impersonate an official of the fake university, to "verify" his degrees.

I appreciate the boldness of this lie, and the fact that he hired an 'actress' to impersonate the university (vandelay industries anyone?). I mean, a quick google search shows that no such university exists. I wonder if he got the idea from the movie Accepted?

A very interesting perspective on the AIG bonuses outrage, which has gotten a bit ridiculous. It might not be the best timing to give out bonuses, but these are top executives, that need to be compensated accordingly or they will go elsewhere- as most have. Now that AIG is owned by American tax payers, i would think people would be interested in doing whatever it takes to get their money back. And that means keeping smart guys like DeSantis. Especially when you consider the fact that these bonuses only amount to 1/1000 of the bailout. That is like giving a kid a $10 allowance and being outraged over the use of a penny.

As someone with a lot of time on his hands, this is wonderful

"A local couple, Mitch Cope and Gina Reichert, started the ball rolling. An artist and an architect, they recently became the proud owners of a one-bedroom house in East Detroit for just $1,900. Buying it wasn’t the craziest idea. The neighborhood is almost, sort of, half-decent. Yes, the occasional crack addict still commutes in from the suburbs but a large, stable Bangladeshi community has also been moving in.

So what did $1,900 buy? The run-down bungalow had already been stripped of its appliances and wiring by the city’s voracious scrappers. But for Mitch that only added to its appeal, because he now had the opportunity to renovate it with solar heating, solar electricity and low-cost, high-efficiency appliances.

Buying that first house had a snowball effect. Almost immediately, Mitch and Gina bought two adjacent lots for even less and, with the help of friends and local youngsters, dug in a garden. Then they bought the house next door for $500, reselling it to a pair of local artists for a $50 profit. When they heard about the $100 place down the street, they called their friends Jon and Sarah."

If i were closer to Detroit, i think it would be great to get a little neighborhood of dilapidated houses going. I doubt it would be a great investment, but i still think it would be fun, but maybe just for a summer.

A very interesting article from the Economist about the failed drug war. Most of the news i read these days tends to be about the US, but recently I saw something about how Harper wants to institute mandatory sentences for drug related crimes, ie. a US style war on drugs. This article helps to put the idiocy of that into perspective.
