Aging is negotiable but death is not – learn to think rationally about your own death and decide to deal with it your way with panache and as much dignity and little pain as possible. Life is about impermanence. Most people die badly, take way too long, get all maudlin about it, make lots of other people miserable and expend resources on silly services. Enjoy your family, relatives, friends and associates when you are in good spirits and active. Don’t wait to tell people you love them. Don’t delay in telling the truth. Prepare yourself for middle age and any age that might follow – master the keys for compressing senescence and morbidity. Middle age is a myth – it happens only to those who believe in it. Of course, eventually, we all slow down as we become much older but how much we slow at how fast a pace is up to us. Middle age does not occur when you remove the mirror from above your bed and replace it with a poster of the food pyramid. Focus not on life extension but on the quality of life in the extension. All forms of contemporary medicine, whether scientific or alternative, establishment or complementary, harbor elements (practitioners, modalities, remedies, procedures and customs) that are ineffective, inappropriate, dangerous, bogus and otherwise ill advised. This is why a Concierge Physician or Physician Wellness Coach is so important in your PDP. Undeveloped reasoning skills and a related predisposition to easy answers and a disdain for science create high levels of credulity and gullibility. Assess and upgrade your personal vital signs. How much you weigh is not very important, at least for your health. It might be for your self concept. What matters far more than fat is body composition and functional capacity, particularly resting heart rates, recovery rates, flexibility, muscle strength and other physical performance parameters. Switch your focus from fat to muscle. Know your waist to hip ratio and BMI as well as your cholesterol and blood pressure. Remember FITT and the Pyramid and become the CEO of your body. Choose serenity when you need it. Unmanaged stress is at epidemic levels, you can’t medicate it away, though millions surely try. Coping is impossible – there are simply way too many events and circumstances producing stress. Eventually, you will succumb (get ill, act crazy, wet your pants) to daily pressures, anxieties, fears and so on. Learn lifestyle artistry, beginning with a different mindset about stress that acknowledges that you have a choice as to how to perceive and respond to all events and circumstances that could potentially provoke the stress response Choose an outlook that enables you to be serene at a moment’s notice, no matter what. Become a bottom feeder on the food pyramid. (See attached Pyramid) Americans eat too much, choose foods unwisely, waste a fortune on unnecessary supplements and are uninformed about how to effectively change their dietary habits. This is not a pretty picture – each year, Americans spend $30 Billion on weight-loss products and services. Hopefully, you are un-American in this respect. Spend more on fruits and vegetables, whole grains, bottled water and less on fat, alcohol and sugary desserts. Dedicate yourself to the production of an award winning fluffy floater every day. Laughter. Be resolute in pursuit of your own RDA of DBLU’s. Humorous moments of laughter, delight, play, merriment and all manner of lighthearted joy are seen as luxuries, optional diversions to pursue on weekends when the serious business of work and other responsibilities have been attended. This is a high risk outlook and should be modified. It is hazardous to your health and a barrier to high performance. You need daily pleasures, in fact, hourly smiles and even guffaws are conducive to, necessary for, and compatible with realizing and maintaining your highest potentials for physical and especially psychological, emotional and spiritual well being. Develop your own personal development plan ( PDP ) and make conscious the continuing quest for satisfying meaning and purpose. Are you comfortable articulating ideas about the meaning of life and questions like “Why are you here” or “What’s it all about?’ A lack of interest in or curiosity about these timeless questions may signal a need to reassess the adequacy of your sense of meaning and purpose at work and in everyday life. Lack of delight in these kinds of questions is often due to cultural propaganda, dogmas, group think or norms that don’t encourage free inquiry, curiosity and a search for a new meaning as a fascinating exercise. Often the cancer patient’s and their family’s mental, physical and spiritual distress is overlooked. For these people in distress, coaching offers major benefits, helping them cope with anxiety, stress and family decisions. Over 50% of cancer patients and their families experience some level of anxiety, stress and confusion. These conditions can adversely affect the family and the patient’s response to treatment and the amount of side effects they suffer. Coaching helps improve compliance with the difficult cancer treatment and cuts down on the patient’s anxiety and stress. Lack of family support or understanding of how to give support are major contributors to the anxiety.

How to make good decisions can be clouded in this whirlwind of treatment. Coaching can help remove barriers to receiving the best care and post treatment care. Coaching helps everyone to identify their core values and intentions and gives them tools to face this trauma with focus, clarity, ease and grace. Being able to be in coherence with your values and intentions in this time makes stress and anxieties melt away. Patients are often grieving the things they perceive they are losing and coaching can help people see what they have and have had.

The process of taking small sweet steps each day relieves anxiety and allows the patient and their family to focus on more immediate day to day concerns rather then the overwhelming negative picture they have.

After treatment, re-entry into the normal world can be fraught with pitfalls and a personal coach can help make this a soft landing. Nobody nor family lives through cancer and says their life hasn’t been changed. They are different people and need help in re-establishing relationships. Cancer patients become more compassionate and aware of other’s problems. They get out of unhealthy jobs and relationships. They discover they have another chance at life and they want
to live it as happily as they can. A coach can do this with you.

Happy LivingBouda Life, Corporate and Wellness Coachinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18248971552612761135noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5994651193640768457.post-7047459540188343542008-06-25T14:29:00.002-05:002008-06-25T14:53:06.915-05:00Thursday's Thoughts from BLC - #2-08 Obesity RisksOBESITY RISKS FOR THE PERSON AND THE COMPANY

Commonwealth Fund Study has recently determined that there has been a 60% increase in uninsureds in the USA and 20% of the insured have spent > 10% of gross income on out of pocket medical expenses in the last year. The new Jounal of Obesity confirms that 33% of the USA is obese. Well what is that risk in addition to the expense of being obese or becoming obese?

If you are 30 pounds overweight then your medical expenses increase in the range of $5000 to $21,000 dollars. If you are 70# overweight your medical expenses increase in the range of $15,000 to $29,000. Both categories have a decreased overall survival compared to the national average.

Obese people consume more health care dollars, miss more work, have increased accidents and suffer an overall decreased quality of life.

One concern about working to decrease obesity in your workplace is that your benefits achieved for that employee will be transfered to the new company that the employee may choose. Other than simply doing the "right thing" for your employee, if you actively pursue lifestyle management for your employees you may achieve for yourself and your employee the following:
1. less healthcare dollar expenditure and out of pocket expenses
2. less missed work time
3. less accidents
4. more engaged employees
5. better retention
6. better training experiences
7. lower turover and retraining expense

Simple things like cafeteria retooling, vending machine alterations, stair encouragement and joint gym memberships may start your program and KEEP your employee because of your interest.

Now is the time for you to practice EGDI - Early Goal Directed Intervention - to achieve short and long term expenditures.

Happy LivingBouda Life, Corporate and Wellness Coachinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18248971552612761135noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5994651193640768457.post-61978275370651028492008-06-23T08:00:00.000-05:002008-06-23T08:46:14.524-05:00Overweight and ObesityMonday’s Message from BLC #1- 08 – Overweight and Obesity

When you are out this week in a crowd look to your right and then to your left and one of the three of you are obese and two of the three of you are overweight. 65% of Americans are overweight and 30% are obese. 300,000 Americans die each year from obesity complications. If we do not do something for our selves then at least we ought to do something for our children.

You are overweight if your measurements meet these criteria:
1. a male’s waist to hip ratio in inches is >1 and a female’s waist to hip ratio is > than .8
2. the waist measurement around the belly button is >40 inches in a male and 35 inches in a female
3. the BMI [ Body Mass Index ] found in tables is greater than 26

40% of Americans will be on an unsuccessful diet this next 12 months

What should you be doing? First, DO NOT resort to quick fix diets, pills or “voodoo” prescribed by diet doctors or multi level marketing companies. We will be discussing sensible ways to address weight loss through out the next year.

What should I weigh?
If you are a male then the following equation works for you
For your first 60 inches of height use 107 # and to that add 6# X every inch over 60 inches
EG. 6 feet 2 inch man would be 107 + [ 14 X 6 ] = 191 # for a good body weight
Add 10% for healthy fat and you have 210# for a good weight
If you are a female then the following equation works for you
For your first 60 inches of height use 106 # and to that add 5 # X every inch over 60 inches
EG. 5 feet 6 inch woman would be 106 + [ 6 X 5 ] = 141 # for a good body weight
Add 10% for healthy fat and you have 155# for a good weight

How many calories should I eat to lose weight?

Resting Metabolic Rate is the calories burned for sitting in a chair, awake and doing nothing.
For a male: 900 + [10 X # kg ] = Calories N.B. Kg = weight in pounds divided by 2.2
EG. 220 # man is 900 + [ 10 X 100 ] = 1900 calories
For a female: 800 + [ 7 X # kg ] = Calories
EG. 155# woman is 800 + [ 7 X 70 ] = 1290 calories

To the Resting Metabolic Rate multiply the activity factor
1.2 for sedentary job: Our male would be 2280 calories and female 1540 calories
1.4 for moderate activity: Our male would be 2660 calories and female 1806 calories
1.6 for active life style: Our male would be 3040 calories and female 2064 calories

Now you know your weight and calorie maintenance so JOIN the 250 Club. Eat 250 less calories per day and use / burn 250 more calories per day. Remember to lose a pound of weight then 3500 calories must be lost and the 250 Club would help you lose 52 pounds in a year with out much change in life style.

Ed writes what not to do when on a healthy living plan:
This morning I rowed 7 km which should take care of the cheese on the hamburger and most of the onion rings, walked 2 miles which should take care of the lemon meringue pie and lifted weights which should take care of the hamburger bun. The rest of the hamburger, the coke, a hand full of peanuts and the hot fudge Sunday is still up for grabs. Ed

We will discuss more on healthy living in subsequent additions. Our education / coaching model draws out and leads forward the innate and often hidden wholeness in each person.Bouda Life, Corporate and Wellness Coachinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18248971552612761135noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5994651193640768457.post-85825902160603850542008-02-11T23:01:00.000-06:002008-02-11T23:08:47.516-06:00What's Love Got To Do With Anything? So, it's February and there's a lot of buzz about 'Valentine's Day" and we begin to wonder what we should do for our loved ones. Well, the question is - why does it matter? In coaching, we are aware that Relationships are a very important form of energy for our everyday lives. So, why not direct the focus of your attention on those loving relationships in your life? The world could us a little more love and afffirmation, so why not take advantage of this special time of year to do something so 'sweet' and loving for some special people in your life. Maybe even for those who aren't always considered the most important. Would it be all right to be generously and genuinely kind and caring with your grocery checker or the clerk who sells you your favorite perfume. Connecting with another in a special way is a gift you give to the other and then you receive a gift right back. Try it - with those you're close to and with those who aren't. The results may just warm your heart and bring a sensse of meaning to everyday events.
For now, I send you the warmest of regards during this rather cold season!Bouda Life, Corporate and Wellness Coachinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18248971552612761135noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5994651193640768457.post-18441129493200357992008-01-21T20:33:00.000-06:002008-01-21T20:36:47.677-06:00NEBRASKA LIVING MAGAZINE ARTICLE [ Fall 2007 ]

Concierge Medicine – “One physician, One relationship, Countless Possibilities”

What would it be like if you could relight your fire, ignite your passion and finally fulfill your dreams?
