Register School Age Children for Summer Reading!

Farmington residents are invited to come to the Children's room at the Farmington Library to register for Summer Reading.

For each book you read you will put a colored dot on our "Be Creative" Mural.

Each time you visit and check in you can spin the wheel to win a prize!

Our volunteers will help you check in with your reading logs
and answer any questions you may have.

Finishing Touches Were Added to the Secret Garden Mural Tonight - Don't Miss the Dedication on June 29 at 7:00 PM

Jane Maciel, library staff member and resident artist, created a beautiful mural for the Children's Room.

Bring a flower to celebrate the Dedication on Monday evening, June 29, at 7:00 P.M.

There will be music, a story and a special game related to the mural. And refreshments.

Through Sophie's Eyes - Author book signing

Author Catherine Gibson had a beautiful reception and book signing for her first book Sophie's Eyes. Sophie is a girl who loves to dance in spite of her inability to hear the music. Along with an inspiring story the book shows the alphabet in finger spelling.

Monday Morning in the Children's Room

First thing Monday morning this group of children were playing at our train table .
A great place to come this summer to escape the heat or rain!

It's still Monday morning and this family was looking for Star Wars books.
They said they love their library!

And later Monday afternoon we caught this 3 month old baby reading an Eric Carle book. It's never to early to start reading to your little one!

Baby Rhyme Time

Baby Rhyme Time is a series of programs for babies from birth to 12 months old featuring rhymes, movement and book sharing, too.

It's hard to believe, but in four short weeks we will be starting our summer reading program.

Our theme this summer will be Get Creative@ Your Library!

This year the schools will be posting all of the summer reading materials through the e-mail system, so it will be important to check your messages so that you get the instructions from the school.

We will also have directions and materials here at the library.

Children will check in with their logs as usual & receive a small incentive prize at each visit.

We will also have the summer reading books housed in a special section, so you may easily find them when you come to the library.

More information will come as we approach the beginning of summer vacation!

Super Why at Willy Nilly

Join the fun every Wednesday afternoon for a parent/child activity featuring stories and famous characters all children know.

This week we read books and played SuperWhy games, the new PBS children's program that celebrates beginning literacy.

Putting on the masks they made, children went on a scavanger hunt.

And then there were prizes for everyone!

The Children’s Choice Book Awards were announced live at the awards gala held May 12 in New York City as part of Children’s Book Week (May 11-17, 2009), the oldest national literacy event in the United States. This year marks the 90th observance of Book Week.

Preschoolers master the Maypole Dance!

The Last Olympian arrives at the Farmington Library!

The Last Olympian by Rick Riordan, the fifth and concluding book in the Lightning Thief series arrived today, celebrated by a party in the Children's Room.

Best of all was the door prize - a copy of the new book.

Teams competed in Olympic games, trivia contests & and even a "toga" making contest. And everyone feasted on "blue" food - the favorite of Percy and his mom.

1,000 Books Before Kindergarten

1000 Books Before Kindergarten

There are still several places in our new program, 1000 Books before Kindergarten, generously sponsored by Friends of the Farmington Library.

When you register your child, you will receive a notebook and your first reading log to record books #1 to #100. After you have read and recorded 100 books on your list, you will receive your book bag, imprinted with the logo of the program and your next reading log.

At each visit you will receive a sticker to add to our bulletin board.

Certificates will be given every August for children who have completed the program during the year. This year’s celebration will be held on
Wednesday, August 12, 2009 at 10:30 am.

What You Need To Know...
What age child can enter? Infants, toddlers and pre-school children starting school after September, 2009.
Who can participate? You need to be a Farmington resident to participate.
Why should we participate in this program? Reading to your child is one of the most important things you can do to ensure their success when they start school.
How long do you have to complete program? You need to finish reading 1,000 books before your child starts kindergarten.
Can more than one child enter from one family? Yes, but you will receive one book bag.
Do I have to read certain books? You can read any book to your child, but you can only count each title one time.
Do I need to show my reading list at each check-in? Yes, bring your notebook to the library. There are still several places left in this innovative, pilot project sponsored by the Friends of the Library.

Celebrate Korea!

During the month of April we celebrated Korea. On Tuesday we learned a traditional Korean game called Yutnori. This board game is played by dividing up 2 teams of people and then tossing wooden sticks in order to determine where to move on the board. This game is fun for all ages! We were also taught the ancient art of paper folding known as origami. See our cranes below.
