This can speed up communication of large e-mails.Theohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15297790411942050417noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5941325.post-1144602299882696522006-04-09T17:04:00.000Z2006-04-09T17:04:00.000ZNOTE: The ssh method mentioned in my comment is *N...NOTE: The ssh method mentioned in my comment is *NOT* simple ssh port forwarding. I think ii.com DOES mention port forwarding.

The ssh method that PINE uses in its ssh-* and rsh-* configuration directives actually starts remote shells that kick off imapd's directly (rather than connecting via IMAP directly).Theohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15297790411942050417noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5941325.post-1144602148797798782006-04-09T17:02:00.000Z2006-04-09T17:02:00.000ZI notice that none of the PINE documentation inclu...I notice that none of the PINE documentation includes information about the useful rsh-* and ssh-* directives in PINE. There is a decent document about them here:

http://www.unix.org.ua/orelly/networking_2ndEd/ssh/ch11_03.htm

(note that that's actually just a chapter out of the O'Reilly SSH book)

If you have SSH access to your IMAP server and have setup PublicKeyAuthentication (or another password-less authentication) then this is a great alternative to connecting to IMAP directly.

If your IMAP server supports SSL or TLS, then this is not important. However, if you have an IMAP server that does not support secure connections, then using SSH to kick off a pre-authenticated IMAPd works great. (and is not difficult to setup; PINE's rsh-* and ssh-* setup is very elegant)

I notice that other e-mail clients (for example, Evolution) promote their own versions of this feature heavily. PINE doesn't say much about it. Maybe you could?Theohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15297790411942050417noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5941325.post-1140975555122828802006-02-26T17:39:00.000Z2006-02-26T17:39:00.000ZHi Nancy.Sorry, it was not pine's fault. Now i use postfix instead, and it works as wanted.

Tim

P.S.: Contents and looks of your pages are great!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5941325.post-1140958950140910662006-02-26T13:02:00.000Z2006-02-26T13:02:00.000ZHi Tim, I need to update all my email-related page...Hi Tim, I need to update all my email-related pages so that they discuss or link to information about "Envelope From" (aka "Envelope Sender") headers. In the meantime, you can often determine the envelope sender by looking at the 'Return-Path:' header of the message. To learn more about this, including how to change it, do a search for "Return-Path" AND "envelope". Please post again if you have more questions.Nancyhttp://deflexion.com/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5941325.post-1140957782984733212006-02-26T12:43:00.000Z2006-02-26T12:43:00.000ZHithanks for:http://www.ii.com/internet/messaging/...Hi

thanks for:

http://www.ii.com/internet/messaging/pine/changing_from/

However, it doesnt tell me how to change the envelope(!)-from for the smtp conversation.

greetings,
Tim (n14@nurfuerspam.de)Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
