Why? Because there, you have to work for your food, brave the cold and brutal weather conditions just to survive. Today in America you almost don't have to work to do anything.  With the advent of remote control entertainment systems, pizza delivery and wireless telephones, the average American never has to leave the sofa.&lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt; This becomes even clearer when we witness the growing problem of children with obesity. Nutrition counselors agree that for every 3 to 5 pounds a child is over their normal weight level before they reach puberty, that child will become on average 15 to 30 pounds before they reach the age of thirty.  To add to this, Type II diabetes is now become one of the fastest growing diseases among teens.&lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt; This is troubling because young people are most impressionable during their teenage years. Think about it, going through puberty was hard enough when you were approaching puberty at a normal weight.  Just imagine how difficult it must be for kids these days that now carry an additional 45 to 70 pounds around. What is really startling is the enormous growth taking place within the dieting industry. Teens are quickly become the best potential customer bases before they are able to vote.&lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt; Fortunately, this can be prevented.  And it can be prevented easily and early on, and the solution is surprisingly retro:&lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt; Look back at your younger days and remember what you did as a kid before the electronic babysitters came on the scene. If you recall this time in your life, you will more than likely remember going to the park with friends, playing kick ball or soccer.&lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt; When you were thirsty, mostly you grabbed milk, sometimes orange juice, not sodas.  Cookies were a treat, not a staple of your diet.  Snacks were things like apple wedges or an orange, maybe some peeled carrots.&lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt; This same attitude can be instilled in your kids, but you have to be strict about it.  Keep your kids on the smallest amount of soda you can.  If you do give your kids soda, give them diet soda, or a mixture of diet and regular; the key here is that you don't want to give them a sugar addiction early on.  Humans are evolved to prefer sweet as a flavor, and the amount of sugar in a can of non diet soda has increased 30% since 1970.&lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt; Another simple trick is to schedule snack times along with family style meals. As an example, rather than Johnny eating a snack whenever he is bored, you establish certain times during the day when he will have a snack and what his choices are. By doing this early, it minimizes the impulse eating and helps children make proper choices.&lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt; Staying physically active is an absolute necessity.  Children are usually mirror images of their parents.  If you as a parent live a sedentary life, the chances of your child duplicating your example are very high. If you have little league teams in your town, encourage your children to participate.  Not all kids are athletic but all kids need to be active.  In addition, set aside at least one day in the week where the entire family is physically active together.  It could be a walk in the park or playing tag in the backyard.&lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt; Start early with your children. Sit down with them and honestly and directly explain why living a healthy lifestyle is important.  If you are reading this today, you are the future of your family. This has been a really interesting year for me, full of ups and downs.&lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt; Earlier this year, I ended up spending a lot of time indoors after I lost my job, and I ended up gaining 30 pounds in about 8 months. I couldn't believe this, as I had never weighed this much before in my life.&lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt; I was confused by this. I generally don't eat too badly, though I do sneak in a few treats here and there. I hadn't changed my eating habits though. The fact that I wasn't as active all day caused the weight gain.&lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt; Fortunately, I've turned things completely around. I've lost so much weight and I have some great results to show for it. Most importantly, I feel better than I have in years.&lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt; The biggest thing that I did was the fact that I eliminated any and all sodas from my every day drinking habits. I don't care if it's a diet cola that has no calories, I still think it's bad.&lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt; Additionally, I took a closer look at the foods I ate and decided to do away with sugar altogether. The only sugar I'd have from here was the sugar that's found naturally in fruits, which happens to taste pretty good.&lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt; Next, I make it a point to run at least 4 times weekly. I really try for 5 or 6 when I can, but 4 should do the job, especially if you aim for a faster speed each time.&lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt; The last thing I decided to do was replace all fried and sauteed foods with grilled and baked ones. This was difficult, but like any habit, I became used to it after a few weeks. The idea is that you want to have the best results from your workout. If you exercise too long you can end up giving all of it back and end up working out for show. This is why experts encourage you to stick to a 45 minute regimen.&lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt; The post regimen is important as well. We recommend eating within 90 minutes of working out so you can allow the body to recover fully.&lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt; Waiting longer will help you lose muscle as opposed to gaining it. Today we've put together a few effective methods for your legs.&lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt; Squats- Almost everyone likes to do squats, and the benefits are plentiful. You can work your hamstrings, quads, and buttocks. In fact, there aren't really a lot of exercises that guarantee leg muscle results like squats do.&lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt; The best approach is to stand with your feet apart, knees slightly bent, abs tight, and shoulders down while relaxed. We also recommend keeping your head and neck straight to allow for natural alignment.&lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt; Your knees will bend until you reach a 90 degree angle. Don't lean forward though because if you put too much pressure up front, there is more of a risk for injuries to take place. The knee joints and lower back can easily be hurt in the process.&lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt; When you are bending it's important to pretend like there is a stool behind you to sit. You should hold the position for a one count, and then slowly rise back up. Also the knees should remain within the range of your toes at all times. All that is left is simply repeating the process until your rep goals have been met.&lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt; Romanian Deadlift- When you use this exercise you will be targeting the hamstrings and glutes. Choose a barbell or set of dumbbells and hold them a little farther apart than shoulder grip. Also make sure your knees slightly bent and push back your hips. During this exercise it's important to keep your back straight throughout the exercise. We also recommend a controlled approach.&lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt; While standing tall, lower the bar while pushing the hips back and bending the knees. Even though these traits are important, don't forget to breathe. Take a deep breath at the start of the movement, hold it while the bar is below your knees, and exhale as the bar comes up. You may need some assistance when doing the Romanian Deadlift, so don't be afraid to get it.&lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt; Calve Raises- When you do calve raises be sure your feet are spread apart, and the hands are placed on your hips. Posture is always important, and it's no different here. Makes sure your head and neck are erect, and then slowly raise your heels until you feel a squeeze in the calf muscles. You should hold for a one count, squeezing, and then lowering slowly.&lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt; It's understandable that certain exercises for legs can be complex. However, it is important to pay attention to your movements. In the end, no matter if you do one or all of these, make sure you eat enough before working out. As a clinical nutritionist and one who has lectured on nutrition in critical care, I see this every day.&lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt; This is more common in women, and especially among elderly women.  &lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt; The accepted level of protein from all sources such as animal proteins, eggs and dairy, etc, is 1.5 grams of protein per Kilogram of body weight per day just to maintain things.&lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt; Since 1 kilogram is 2.2 pounds, if you're the average American weighing in at 150 pounds you'll need about 105 grams of digestible protein per day. &lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt; An ounce of meat has about 7 grams of digestible protein.  You'll get about the same amount out of a whole egg.  &lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt; Remember, the key is digestible protein. &lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt; If your protein isn't high quality and digestible, then it will pass through your system without any benefit to you.  This is the problem with fast food. While a nutritional label may suggest that pasta has 5 grams of protein per serving; you may only be able to digest 2-3 grams of that protein, which means you must complement the pasta with other sources of protein.&lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt; These vegans often cite how scientists have bred sheep over the years to generate unnatural amounts of wool for human needs. This breeding has resulted in the Merino sheep of today, which often has enough wool to equal its body weight.&lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt; Vitamin C can be found in berries, tomatoes, citrus fruit, kale, kiwis, asparagus and peppers.&lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt; Soy milk is also a good source of protein for vegetarians. Studies on isolated soy protein show that it can be absorbed nearly as well as animal proteins, yielding close to a 1:1 protein absorption ratio.&lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt; So what does this all mean for you as a prospective vegetarian?&lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt; As a vegetarian you have a number of options to boost your protein intake - and you should consider taking advantage of all of them. For breakfast, lunch, dinner, or even a snack they make meals in minutes and can always be different. With only a few ingredients you can create a flavorful meal-on-the-go anytime.&lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt; Here is a basic step-by-step recipe so you can put a sandwich wrap together in minutes. This easy recipe can be adjusted to your taste, the seasons, or to whatever you may have in the refrigerator or cupboards when you make it. Place your chosen ingredients in layers down the center of the wrap, leaving an inch or so at the bottom to close it when you are done.&lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt; 1. First choose the kind of wrap that you want. Soft tortilla shells come in a wide variety of flavors today such as spinach, tomato, whole grain and more. You may also want to try some kale leaves (raw or lightly steamed) with the stem cut out so you are only using the leafy part or try some large lettuce leaves or even some steamed cabbage leaves.&lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt; 2. Select a spread for the wrap base. This is what will go underneath all of your ingredients. Spread a layer, as thin or as thick as you like, on the wrap that you have selected. Here are a few ideas for ingredients to spread on your wrap: mayonnaise, cooked sweet potatoes, sour cream, olive tapenade, or plain or flavored cream cheese.&lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt; 3. Choose a filling for the wrap sandwich. Use anything you like, alone or in combination. Place as much of your filling(s) in a strip down the center of the wrap. Try cheese (sliced or shredded), sliced deli meat, leftover cooked chicken (sliced or shredded), canned salmon, tuna, or sardines, etc.&lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt; 4. Fill up your sandwich wrap with a variety of vegetables or fruit. Here is a great way to get more of these healthy foods into your diet.&lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt; &lt;u&gt;Vegetable Suggestions&lt;/u&gt;: shredded lettuce, peeled and thinly sliced jicama, thinly sliced cucumbers, marinated artichoke hearts, shredded cabbage, shredded carrots, fresh tomato slices or diced tomatoes, sliced mushrooms, sliced scallions, sliced roasted red peppers, sliced sweet bell peppers, very thinly sliced fennel, chopped or diced onion, etc.&lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt; &lt;u&gt;Fruit Suggestions&lt;/u&gt;: dried cranberries, orange slices, diced or sliced apples or pears, peach slices, sliced strawberries or mango, raisins or dried fruit of choice, fresh blueberries or blackberries, sliced mango, diced cantaloupe or honeydew melon, etc.&lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt; 5. Add an extra layer of flavor. These are food items that boost the flavor of your sandwich wrap. Use as much and as many as you would like. Today, many youngsters and adults have serious food allergies.  Some have one food allergy and others have many [**].  Folks have allergies to specific items, like strawberries, as well as broad items, like gluten.  Sadly, there are many food allergies that are dangerous and even potentially lethal to children.  These are some methods that kids are influenced by their food allergies.&lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt; At School&lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt; Children with food allergies are influenced much so in their faculties.  If a child has a food allergy to peanuts, this may be a life threatening condition.  Years ago, the child was simply made to handle this on his or her own.  Because such food allergies have been growing in intensity in the latest years, some colleges have made the drastic and very tough effort to become utterly peanut free school|colleges.&lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt; These colleges don't sell items that contain peanuts, they don't make peanut items in their cafeteria, and they don't permit other students to bring in food items that contain peanuts.  While this could appear extreme and tough to non allergic scholars, students with a food allergy to peanuts might be killed by the air born particles from a peanut product. &lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt; Some colleges , however , have not gotten wholly on board with a peanut free environment.  These schools do often try to help the student with a food allergy though.  These colleges allow for a peanut free table in the lunchroom.  This is a table where only children who have peanut free lunches can sit. &lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt; While this can seem to be a smart idea and a great compromise, it is just isolating a kid with a food allergy from the remainder of the class.  Some have disagreed that this goes against the tenet of least restrictive environment as laid down by recent instructional laws.  A kid with a food allergy should not have to be isolated from the rest of the class and their pals during lunchtime.&lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt; At Home&lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt; If you have a kid with a food allergy, you try and do anything you can to avoid a food allergy symptom.  Food allergy symptoms can include vomiting, diarrhea, swelling, hives, and even anaphylactic shock and death. &lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt; The home front is also a battleground for child food allergies in that you need to be awfully diligent in keeping your child safe from tarnished foods.  In some instances, it becomes obligatory for the entire family to cut the allergen out from their diet.&lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt; A kid faces a repeated battle when diagnosed with an acute food allergy like peanuts or gluten.
