Rocking the Nooksack

Paddling the Nooksack River on July 12, 2008 near Glacier, WA. The river is rated Class II in this section - read about it on the AmericanWhitewater.org.

The NuCanoe performed great! It was very stable and maneuverable, even in the fast water. When going through sections of big rapids, the NuCanoe did take on water, sometimes a lot. But that didn't cause any problems. Another benefit is that the NuCanoe is bouyant and floats upsidedown...so even if the paddler falls out and the NuCanoe tips over, you can still climb on and paddle your way to shore.

Overall, a great day. Getting into Class II water has its inherent risks, but the NuCanoe performs well and is very maneuverable. On the Class I & unrated sections, it was a relaxing comfortable float down the river.

A Happy Anniversary with a NuCanoe

A picture of my parents with their NuCanoe. They were shock needless to say. It even brought tears to my father's eyes when we drove in Saturday with it on Memorial Day weekend, and believe me that is not something that comes easily. But both were elated to receive their Anniversary gift. They took it out today on Lake Wausau, which is a sizable lake along with many other boat enthusiasts on such a lovely day, and my mother said she felt very secure in it and my father said that that even in the motor boats' wake the NuCanoe was very stable, and he kept wanting the motor boats to bring on more! I want to thank you for all your efforts in making this dream possible for them.

Paddling down the Skagit River

"Well, I have had my 10' NuCanoe for about 2 months now and have not had it out as much as I would like, but, the times that I have had it out, were great! I really like my NuCanoe! Very stable and fun to paddle and fish from. It paddles very easily up stream as well as on open bodies of water. You have a great product here and I know that I have probably sold a couple locally just from other people seeing it on the water and asking questions. Job well done with this boat. Family Fishing Fun

"We love our Nucanoe! Took the kids out to Lake Padden on Sunday and Julian caught this sweet 14" Rainbow trout. This boat is so stable that I can take my kids out in it without any worries about tipping--even when my rowdy 6 yr old forgets he's in a small boat and stands up/moves around. You can't do that in a regular canoe. Plus I can load/unload it myself out of the pickup truck, so can get out fishing with just the kids and me. This boat was truly made for taking kids fishing."

NuCanoe Rowing on Lake Union

The NuCanoe Rower received a thorough test on the weekend. A 10' NuCanoe and 12' NuCanoe, both equipped with the rowing outriggers and 7' oars, took to Lake Union in Seattle, WA on a breezy Saturday afternoon. And it was excellent! The NuCanoes cut through the water with ease, track well even in rough conditions, and provide great stability. An enjoyable afternoon for all!

Here are some photos and a video from the initial test of a prototype add-on rowing kit for the NuCanoe. The NuCanoe was real fast in the water and still tracks great. The rowing kit will be compatible with existing NuCanoe models, and will not require any hull modifications! The
rowing is expected to be available by January 2008.

This year’s Greater Columbia Water Trails Inaugural River Run from Oroville to Tonasket was a great time, although my arms were just about worn out by the time my friends Mo (Maureen), Geoff and I finally passed under the Fourth Street Bridge.

We planned on splitting the paddling chores in a single canoe, but opted instead for the three Nu Canoes that Ed Lawrence of Extreme Adventures offered us to try. We each had our own craft - a kind of combination kayak and canoe to navigate down the mighty Okanogan. I think Mo thought it was going to be more of a river “float.” That was just wishful thinking as we all soon found out that if we didn’t paddle we’d have been at it all night. As it was our timing was perfect - last in the water and last out - just in time for a great steak dinner at the Tonasket Eagles.

Arnie Marchand, one of the event’s organizers, commented to me the other day that some people were speculating that all three of us “were out of our minds” so to speak. However, the event was not a race so my friends and I took our sweet time exploring the river, having lunch on a sandy beach and stopping often to cool down from the 90 plus degree heat with a swim.

Those who have only driven the highway and have never paddled from Oroville to Tonasket might not realize just how much the Okanogan meanders. A trip of 16 road miles becomes a trip of 25 miles by river. After paddling around the first of many oxbows that greet you as you leave Oroville it dawns on you that you’ve only made it as far as the gravel pile south of town. However, once you finally reach that elusive Ellisforde Bridge the river straightens considerably and it’s a quick last effort to get you to Tonasket.

The little rapids just before Tonasket’s Fourth Street Bridge are fun. Take it from me if you hit them just right for maximum effect you can end up with a face full of water while mumbling a “thank you” under your breath to Ed who loaned you a dry bag for your camera before departing the Oroville access point.

Although much smaller, the rapids remind my old college buddy Geoff and I of our first canoe adventure down the Smith Fork in Montana. To Geoff’s older brother, the River Ranger’s disbelief, we went in three times the first day. Our scrambles to right the canoe were accompanied by shouts of “save the Scotch” echoing against the steep canyon walls.

No Scotch on this trip and no getting stuck balanced precariously on a big rock either. No, the Okanogan is a gentle river and with the exception of McLaughlin Falls further south (which I look forward to tackling some day) is just perfect for “stillwater” paddle trips.

I’m glad our northern leg of the river from Oroville to Tonasket is the beginning of the Greater Columbia River Trail and I’m glad I got in on the inaugural voyage with my friends. I’m already looking forward to next year.

Lastly, my apologies to author Norman Maclean for borrowing the title of his classic book on life and fly fishing. It’s one of my favorites, although his Young Men and Fire might be more appropriate for the county this week.

NuCanoe Camping @ Lake Diablo

Diablo Lake in the North Cascades is a pristine & scenic place, and what better way to get lost in it than to take a NuCanoe camping to a remote, boat-in campground. We set off on the 2+ mile paddle to the campsite at the worst of time of day, early afternoon as the wind was blowing and the water was chopping. That made the paddling a bit rough, as did a bit of confusion in finding the unmarked campsite. But, overall, the journey was quite remarkable - just take a look at the pics. The NuCanoes cut through the waves & chop, delivering the passengers and gear safefully to the campsite. Once there, tranquility returned and a evening of trolling for fish (too elusive for us!) followed. Great times. Great setting. And great transport via the NuCanoe!

NuCanoe Anglers Reel 'em In

A few novice anglers met up for a camping & fishing weekend at Moran State Park over the Memorial Day weekend. Equipped with a modest amount of knowledge, basic fishing gear, and three NuCanoe Adventurers, they hit the lake in search of Rainbow Trout. After a slow start, lessons were learned and the results were great!
