Introduction

Paul Mitchell shocked the hair world when he threw out hood dryers at Henri Bendel. Vidal Sassoon created new shock waves when he threw out old fashioned roller sets. Jesse's proclamation that the hair world no longer needs perm rods may seem shocking and radical. But over the past five years Jesse and his wife Flo hav developed and perfected a fabulous hair technique - The S Wave Thermal Set - that is guaranteed to create a brand new chapter in the history of hair wave and curl design.

Jesse's S Wave Thermal Set creates soft luscious curls, edgy waves and romantic ringlets while at the same time signaling the death of the traditional perm. Thanks to this exciting new wave creation technique, the days of tight kinky curls, lopsided waves, damaged tresses and frightening frizz are numbered. History Of Creating Waves & Curls

Attempts to create senuous waves and curls on stick straight hair date back to the earliest civilizations. History has recorded attempts by both Egyptian and Roman women to create long lasting hair waves and curls.

According to historical records, women from those ancient times slathered a mixture of mud and water onto their strands and then wrapped them on very crude wooden rollers.

To "set" the waves and curls the women would then try to harness "heat" by sitting in a broiling sun. While crude waves and curls resulted from all this work, the new textures created with the heat mud mixes were not permanent.

Weird Electrical Contraptions & Chemicals

As history progressed, straight tressed woman continue to pursue the elusive waves and curls through a variety of means.

In 1905 Charles Nessler invented a machine that harnessed the required heat through electrical current to metal rods that hair was wrapped around. A complex system of counterbalancing weights were added to the equation, hanging from an overhead chandelier. While the results were better than the previous mud sets, Nessler's machine was known to potentially cause electrical shocks and burns, not to mention the agony of sitting hooked up to a hanging chandelier with weights.

During 1932 Ralph Evans and Everett G. McDonough pioneered a new method of adding waves and curls through a purely chemical process that eliminated the need for Nessler's machines. Although successful, the Evans McDonough methods left much to be desired.

Scientists in 1941 developed a waving lotion made of a strong alkaline chemical solution that when applied to hair would soften and expand every strand by basically breaking the chemical bonds that result in natural texture patterns.

They also created a neutralizer lotion that ultimately hardened and shrunk the hair strands so that they conformed to the shape of a waving rods. The waving process did not require heat of any type and thus were known as cold wave sets.

The 1970s brought a wave solution that was acid rather than alkaline. The goal was basically to break existing hair bonds and then reform them. The difference was that the chemicals used were less harsh.

Sultry Strands Arrive In 2005

In 2000 Jesse and Flo Briggs threw out the traditional hair perm techniques, perming rods and pins. Over the past five years they have worked with a variety of techniques to create a softer, gentler hair waving solution.

After much testing and experimentation they partnered with Stylors, a company in Florida, that produces the finest quality thermal hair chemical solutions available.

Combining the leading edge Stylor formulas with hot new rollers in a variety of sizes, Jesse and Flo created spectacular S Wave results. By experimenting with a vast variety of different sized rollers, plastic coated pins and a myriad of rolling patterns, the Briggs team created stunning results.

Jesse ultimately combined Stylor's Treasure Tress waving solution with his unique rolling and wrapping techniques which produced eye popping, mouth dropping S shaped waves and soft curls. The S Wave Thermal Set was born and nurtured at Yellow Strawberry.

S Wave Thermal Set

The beauty of the S Wave Thermal Set is that it is gentle for all types of hair yet creates a long lasting S Wave pattern that generally lasts for up to three months.

Once the S Wave is created in the Yellow Strawberry Salon, it is easy to simply shampoo and scrunch tresses into a variety of edgy textured looks. Optionally S Waved hair can be shampooed, blow dried and then a wide variety of waves and/or curls can be easily and quickly created with the touch of a curling iron.

The S Wave Thermal Set forever banishes the many hours spent trying to get stick straight hair to form waves and curls. Even better the agony of trying to get hair to hold a newly created curl or wave pattern by applying tons of styling products and wrestling with unwieldy curling irons and hot rollers is over.

Thermal Chemical Utilization

The S Wave Thermal Set is created through the use of an thermal acid chemical process that is specifically designed to produce a soft curl or wave pattern.

The thermal formulas range in pH from 6.5 to 8.0 and are considered much milder than the alkaline based chemicals that were once used on traditional chemical curling/waving procedures.

The S Wave Thermal Set utilizes a special technology to control the oxidation and reduce damage to the hair caused by the application of the required chemicals.

Jesse's Secrets To Perfect S Waves
Jesse explained that he has done so many of the S Wave Sets that it would be impossible for him to explain everything for the purposes of this article.

However, Jesse was graciously willing to share a few of his secrets for creation of the spectacular S Wave Thermal Set. He explained that the "key to the S Wave is utilization of the Stylor Treasure Tress, custom designed wave planning, wrapping and utilization of his special curlers and pins".

While the average Thermal Set will generally last for up to three months, special care of the hair can extend the life of the S Wave Set for longer in some cases.

This means, as Jesse explained "the client's desired wave and curl style is carefully analyzed and the rolling pattern is carefully planned and executed to create those results".

Although the S Wave Thermal Set is usually safe on previously colored or highlighted hair, Jesse did say that in some rare cases it might not be recommended. However, to protect any previous color, Jesse has devised a special process that he uses to protect strands.

The S Wave Thermal Set, depending on the length and thickness of hair to be processed may take from 2 to 2 1/2 hours to be completed. The cost of the Thermal Set varies depending on the condition, length and type of hair being processed. It also depends how long it takes to do the custom design and wrapping. Prices for the S Wave start at $150 and can range up to $450.
