Towers of Food and wednesday pm meeting

Though this may not be what Eau Claire or Western Wisconsin might develop during the long emergency (the end of cheap oil, fertilizers, etc) we might be seeing the Twin Cities, Madison, Millwauke, etc developing these kinds of ideas for sustainable city planning.

David J. Boehlke, a nationally known neighborhood revitalization expert fromWashington D.C., is going to be in Eau Claire on Wednesday, July 16th andhas volunteered to talk to anyone who is interested in neighborhoodrevitalization.

Mr. Boehlke is currently hired to work on revitalizing St. Bernard Parish inNew Orleans.He has identified three areas in Eau Claire which should be our firstpriorities.

If you are interested in seeing our downtown revitalized or have concernsabout preserving the inner city housing stock, please attend and learn whatcan be done to address these goals.

Local Food Consortium KICKOFF!

On Thursday, July 17, Governor James Doyle will come to the loading dock of Sacred Heart Hospital (during a Local Food delivery) to announce the statewide grants. The farmers/processors providing the food will receive their checks in front of the cameras, and WE WOULD LOVE TO HAVE YOU COME AND JOIN US! We're hoping for a lot of media people, also. A reception with local food for everyone will follow the outside loading dock media event (located at the back of the hospital).

We anticipate starting at 10:30 a.m., but come at 10 a.m.

While many summer foodlums are gardening in the foodlums garden, Demmler Park and peace gardens, shopping at the farmers market, connecting with CSA's, Just Local Food, etc. I've started to think about ways to start learning more of the art of hunting and gathering!

Please let the foodlums know if you have any experience in hunting wild foods of many sorts! morel and other mushrooms, wild berries, edible barks and wild flowers, and even squirrel and other wild critters would be dainty!

Also, We've just started keeping a foodlums calendar of events on the bottom of this website, please join us at all these events as they are public! Please let us know if you have any events or hear of any commnunity events that you'd like us to post and attend! Some of us are even happy to volunteer wherever and whenever possible!

A JLF Possibility...

As Just Local Food announced at their open house this Tuesday (4-29-08), they are exploring a few options for our new location, which we will finalize soon. One of the main contenders is across from the YMCA downtown, on the corner of Graham Avenue and Seaver Street. Our Co-Op has the opportunity to take long-term care of this site, rejuvenate a blighted spot in downtown and remain within blocks of the current location. It also has clear and realistic options for expanding on site, to meet future growth.

This is a conceptual drawing by a friend, Lori of the front of the possible new store. (this picture isn't a good representation of the drawing - sorry, the real one is at the store) There will be bike and handicap access, several vehicle parking spots and ample on-street parking nearby. As with any space we will occupy, it will undergo a thorough environmental analysis and all steps will be taken to ensure the safety and quality of the food , workplace and social environment for us all.

Another friend, Ken, drew a quick layout sketch for us. This shows how we would fit now, then expand over time to occupy a larger footprint. Getting excited? So are we!

Climate Protection Agreement Petition

Hey All... If you haven't seen it, there's a petition going around to get Mayor Adler and the rest of Eau Claire City Council to sign the Climate Protection Agreement. This is legislation already signed by a few big cities in Wisconsin - Milwaukee, Madison, La Crosse, and Waukesha to name a few. This is just one step to gaining nationwide attention to sustainable environmental practices and possibly leading up to the U.S. finally signing the Kyoto Protocol. Here are the actions that participating cities must take:

Strive to meet or beat the Kyoto Protocol targets in their own communities, through actions ranging from anti-sprawl land-use policies to urban forest restoration projects to public information campaigns;
Urge their state governments, and the federal government, to enact policies and programs to meet or beat the greenhouse gas emission reduction target suggested for the United States in the Kyoto Protocol -- 7% reduction from 1990 levels by 2012; and
Urge the U.S. Congress to pass the bipartisan greenhouse gas reduction legislation, which would establish a national emission trading system.

Locavore Nation

I wanted to let everybody know that our town of Eau Claire is represented in a national Locavore challenge sponsored by American Public Media. If you'd like to follow Gina's adventures with local food in February, comment on some of your own experiences with last September's challenge or just sit back and observe, please do so!

I look forward to this September's challenge, may it be full of delicious local produce, dairy, possibly meats, etc. through our CSA's, farmer's market, stone soups, etc.

Foodlums Hot Dawg and Chili Sale!

Greetings fellow Foodlums! I thought I would extend an invitation and a reminder that on Wednesday February 13 we will be having our fantabulous local hot dog and chili sale in the lobby of Phillips! We will be selling dogs and chili from 11-2 and all the help and extra hands we can get will be great! And even if you can't stay and work for a bit, stop by and grab a tasty local lunch! Also, please tell your friends and feel free to write invitations up on classroom white boards! The more the merrier!

Native Bay Brunch

I'd like to open an invitation to everyone and anyone to join a couple of friends on a late Sunday morning/early Sunday afternoon to have brunch at native bay restaurant (9am-3pm). I've recently re-discovered this hidden jewel of the Chippewa Valley and am constantly blown away by the brunch's titilating flavors, use of almost all local and sustainable ingredients, and low cost!

I'd like to invite everybody to this Saturday's (April 5th, 2008) kubb/foodlum friendly at peace park across the street from our very own Just Local Foods!

We'll be gathering at the park from 12 noon to 2pm with grills and spatulas ready for any grilling you'd like to do while playing kubb, building snow folk, getting to know fellow foodlums, etc.

The Foodlums will once again be having an infamous local Hot Dawg Sale! This hot dawg sale is particularly special because proceeds from the sale will be going to purchase a goat (or other livestock animal) from Heifer International!

Please swing by on Thursday April 3rd in the lobby of UWEC Phillips Hall from 11-2 for a delicious local hot dog, fair trade Ecuadorian banana dog (our speciality), some tasty vegetarian chili, and to help us raise money for a great cause! Suggested donations for the hot dawgs is $2.00.

Project Description: Local Food Systems Awareness Project goals: -to increase consumer awareness of the benefits of buying local foods; -to increase consumer awareness of the local and regional products currently offered through their grocer; -to survey and gain insight from consumers as to what local/regional products they would likely purchase if they were available. This will be accomplished by working with 3-4 local grocery stores in setting up informational booths with students providing information to consumers on the topic and administering a brief survey. Graduating senior, Tracy Phillippi will provide project coordination including making contacts with grocers, recruiting and training student volunteers, creating the publicity and informational copy, developing and compiling the survey, and ultimately, presenting the results at upcoming pertinent conferences. My role will be to provide supervision, feedback, and support to Tracy throughout the project.

Time Commitment: 15 hours (half requirement)
