We've got several long time online friends who have flown out to visit us and we "talk" to them on a regular basis online, but it's not the same as having someone you can say, "Hey, I'm bored. Let's go out to eat/to a movie/hang out and play video games!" (Sure, you can play versus one another online but it's more fun to have your friend there in your living room so you can punch them in the arm when they beat you.)

There's something to be said for both types of relationships, though. People's lives are so busy these days that online friends tend to be more available to just shoot the breeze.CallieMonoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5878927.post-53797283165637334662008-01-17T10:58:00.000-05:002008-01-17T10:58:00.000-05:00Joe,I have an overnight in Atlanta tonight, no ide...Joe,

I have an overnight in Atlanta tonight, no idea what hotel I'm in or when I'll be there but you have my email if you'd care to let a mildly deranged pseudo stalker to buy you a cocktail!Nightmarehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15216726545673840504noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5878927.post-75635186075684373732008-01-17T09:04:00.000-05:002008-01-17T09:04:00.000-05:00I agree - knowing me in person IS intensely reward...I agree - knowing me in person IS intensely rewarding ;)

No, really - I have started trying to stay offline when I get home and I get a lot more done. Overall, the things I accomplish offline give me a lot more satisfaction.
(of course, I am online all damn day at work, so it's easier for me to want to disconnect afterwards)Lizhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04516774015103938526noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5878927.post-6582255150681885252008-01-17T08:20:00.000-05:002008-01-17T08:20:00.000-05:00Oh, I agree with you. I enjoy the relationships I ...Oh, I agree with you. I enjoy the relationships I have online - but let's face it, we're becoming more and more insulated from what makes us, as human animals, work (at least traditionally).

I mean, you and I talk a good bit online, but even we have met in person - in fact, we didn't really start talking until we met.

I think the things that most hit me about that article related to the "work" part of online behavior, but there's definitely a huge component of the relationship portion that I agree with.

It's the reason I like doing book signings and MI Meetups - I get to meet everyone and actually get to know them, instead of just "OMGHI2U" with emoticons :)JtPhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15104698531910848783noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5878927.post-10765991101460368182008-01-17T08:08:00.000-05:002008-01-17T08:08:00.000-05:00I dunno, Joe. I think it takes a lot longer though.ladydyanihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08851750115839939912noreply@blogger.com
