New Site!!!!

Hey guys, for those of you wondering why I have not post as much on the blog, I'm proud to say that I put up a new website. The site is simple and straight to the point. Having let my old site go, I wanted something new, but at the same time something simple. Most of the new work will be posted there. I've had many problems with blogger trying to post animatics. With that said, I needed something a little more reliable, especially with trying to pick up more freelance work. I'll use the blog to post sketches and stuff. I've been working on doing animatics for my storyboards. I'm doing most of them in Photoshop until I learn After Effects. I am having a total ball doing this! For this particular set I took one of my favorite Marvel characters: the Hulk and created an action sequence. It's an all out war between the Hulk and the Abomination. I went with the old school look and design for the Abomination since I'm not really trying to redesign him. Anyway, this is Act 1, I'll be posting Act 2 between Friday and Monday. I finished Act 2 but there are some minor changes I'm making. There will be 4 parts all together. As usual your comments and critiques are welcome.

Well, here's my post for this week. Todd and I agreed to start posting something every Wednesday. For those of you who don't know, I'm a fantasy buff. I like sci-fi as well, it's just that I tend to lean more towards fantasy stuff. Anyway, I've been working on some ideas and sketches for my own graphic novels and IP's. I was foolin' around with designs of native folk on those worlds. I have more that I'll be posting, in fact I'll probably post again within the next couple of days. I've reached a point where I'm getting tired of doing stuff for others and fattening their pockets. Feel free to critique.

Uuhhmm...this is a sketch I did some time ago. I haven't post anything for awhile so I agreed to post something every Wednesday along with my buddy Todd "Brocasso" Harris. I thought I'd try an African huntress who has a centaurs body. No real rhyme or reason for the image at the time I did it, just bored and wanted to paint something. I've been painting more in Photoshop for no particular reason other than to improve my knowledge of the program. I sat down the other day and couldn't think of crap to draw. Then I started looking at my office and was like, I have all the inspiration I need! I'm a huge gamer and have all the systems except PS3. So I decided to do a game character. One of my favorite villains in games is Goki from Streetfighter. (Akuma is the American name) Anyway, I'm a huge fighting game fan and decided to take a stab at a redesign. I don't really look at this as a redesign per se'. My thoughts were, what would he look like if he was taken over 100% by the "Dark Hadou"? Below is my result and as usual you are welcome to comment and critique.

Here are a couple Photshop sketches I attempted again. Sometimes I feel like I get lost for some reason in Photoshop. I love doing storyboards in PS but, painting is altogether a different animal for me. Anyway, I'm a huge classic monsters fan, Dracula, Werewolf etc, so, I was sitting there thinking how cool it would be to design for those movies. I saw a photo for the new Wolfman movie that's coming out for next year with Benecio Del Toro and said, what the hey...why not. I can't wait to see that one!!! Well, comments are welcomed as usual. Give me a sec and I will get the hang of painting in Photoshop. I'm determined!

This is pretty much a filler since some of my friends are clowning me about my lack of posts...Deon and Todd...keep it to yourselves!!! These are just a couple of rough ideas; they are not the final look. I'm a huge fantasy buff!!! Anything that has fantastic creatures, characters or worlds; I'm front and center! Dragons!!!

It's been a while since I've posted anything so, here are some samples of some dragons I was working on. I'm a big fantasy buff, so doing these type of concepts are always fun. I actually got this idea from looking at one of my favorite concept designers, Ed Lee. I usually do the majority of my paintings in Corel Painter but thought that I would do these in Photoshop. It was actually a lot of fun and I'll be doing more. Feel free to comment or critique if you like.

I did these for myself just to add in my portfolio. It was actually pretty cool doing them. I have some other color boards that I'm working on that I'll also post. Feel free to critique.

The Executioner

First, I would like to say to everyone I hope that we all have a prosperous, productive and fruitful New Year. This is my first post of the New Year and initially this just started as a sketch; just foolin' around. I hadn't painted an illustration in quite some time so I thought that I would take a stab at it. I actually had fun doing the painting. I was going through some of my art books and saw this Executioner painting Frank Frazetta did. I thought that would be a cool idea, so this is my version of an Executioner type character. Feel free to critique.

Conan Head sketch

My friend Todd challenged me to do a Conan sketch. I thought that would be pretty cool, so I took the challenge. I don't think too many people can do a better job than Frazetta. But my personal favorite Conan is by John Buscema. I have all of the Marvel Conan comics that Buscema illustrated. John Buscema is probably one of my biggest influences; I practically have all of the comics he illustrated. Anyway, I tried to combine bits and pieces from Frazetta, Buscema and touches of my own. Hope you like it. Clicking on the image you will find that this too is an animated gif. I think that will be the last animation I post for a while. I've got some full figure paintings coming soon.

Anyway, this is just to show how I approach painting digitally with Corel Painter. The approach varies depending on the subject matter. I'm pretty traditional and stick pretty much to the basics. I will create various brushes sometimes. Hope you enjoy.

Welcome everyone! My name is Julian Allen and this is my first time having a blog. Please excuse the crude intro as I get acclimated to blogging. I'm a concept designer and storyboard artist here in Southern California. I started this blog as a means to meet other artist and people. My buddy Deon Nuckols was the first to introduce me to blogging so, big ups to him. I'm going to try to post something every week, but don't hold your breath.
