As followers of Jesus, we can intercede in prayer for our nation. What is your prayer for America?

Below is a list of the prayers from some of the people of Lakeside Church-Orangevale.

· #1 prayer for my country is peace on Earth and good will toward men.
· Change our attitude about things and consumerism.
· Pray for financial health and all the families it is affecting in the U.S.
· To pray for our leaders to guide us based on the ways of the Bible.
· I pray that everyone would remember that our country was founded on God’s laws.
· That the American people respect themselves so they can respect each other. After we have respect we have a chance for compassion, love and be able to receive God’s love.
· I pray our leaders seek wisdom from God when making decisions about our future.
· No homelessness or hunger.
· Pray for Godly input and insight for our President and cabinet.
· Live in peace with the rest of the world.
· Pray that Jesus is glorified by the American Christians.
· That God’s wisdom will fill the leaders of our nation.
· For our country and keep praying for the elimination of abortion, also for the widows and orphans in our country.
· Pray for the American Christians to be transformed to be more Christlike in reality not just in theory.
· To see an end in our financial crisis, an end in hunger around the world, and a cure for all types of cancer.
· Lord, bring us back to you! Forgive us, as Americans for our pride and arrogance and humble us and lead us back.
· To live by Biblical principles, really live by them.
· That the gospel of Jesus Christ would spread and take roots in American hearts in a way that would bring a new spiritual revival producing diehard world changers – here and worldwide.
· My prayer for the U.S. is for wisdom concerning tense foreign affairs as well as financial accountability and stewardship during these hard times.

"The first thing I want you to do is pray. Pray every way you know how, for everyone you know. Pray especially for rulers and their governments to rule well so we can be quietly about our business of living simply, in humble contemplation. This is the way our Savior God wants us to live." -- 1 Timothy 2, The Message

Chris Baltzleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03837444907486475280noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5862561200031195710.post-89863236381252069052009-07-03T16:41:00.000-07:002009-07-03T16:43:09.249-07:00This one's for free
Real place. And, to the credit of those in attendance, everyone was able to make sense of my abstract question, full of double negatives! During our conversation, a clear theme emerged. In order to experience the time fully, do your best to get there a few minutes early. How does 10:35 am sound? and 2) the Lenten season actually begins on Wednesday, February 25th. Many of us have committed to fast a meal or the entire day, and to dedicate that day to prayer for Stephen Shirley. Would you prayerfully consider joining us?

In preparation for Lent :: 40 Days of Devotion, I wanted to share the following article with you from Troy Hatfield of Mars Hills Bible Church, Grandville, MI.

"Isn't that for Catholics" by Troy Hatfield

I’ve grown used to hearing that question when I mention Lent. My response, which I hope continues to be laced with fewer rolls of the eyes and sarcastic comebacks, has remained fairly consistent: “It’s for all of us.”

I believe Lent is a fantastic opportunity to be put back together. We are all fractured and broken people in need of wholeness and health. Lent provides us a concentrated period to move towards that wholeness. Through self-examination and repentance our relationship and connection with God can be put back together. Through giving and intentional communal experiences our connection with our fellow humans can be put back together. And through self-denial, space and meditation we can take steps towards our own personal health and wholeness.

“But aren’t those things we should always be thinking about?” many have asked. “Shouldn’t these be daily investments and concerns? Why would we say forty-some days are meant to focus on these things?”

I’m glad you asked.

First, let’s acknowledge how desperately the Church needs to sanctify time. The way people have grown to deal with and handle time robs any sense of its holiness or rhythm or sacred space. Our “Git ‘R Done” approach to time numbs us to what I believe is “an intrinsic human desire to order time in such a way as to apprehend the invisible and sacred dimensions of life.” (Wendy Wright, The Rising) All time is not the same. Even the things we say confirm this.

“Time stood still.”

“Time just flew by.”

Some time is full of beauty and love and sweetness. Other time is full of pain and difficulty and burden. Some time we can never get enough of. Some time feels endless, as though we’ll be forever trapped inside it. Not all time is the same. The Church desperately needs a healthy understanding and approach to time—a theology of time that acknowledges and embraces the intricate latticework of time that gives us the chance to peek into the mysteries of how things are. During Lent we have the chance to shape the contours of time in some ways and incorporate a more sacred rhythm and space.

For our particular worshipping community, we are committed to understanding our roots—to continually acknowledge and learn from the long history of people who have sought to follow God. The ancient practice of Lent has formed and inspired countless individuals and communities throughout history, who have, to some mysterious extent, informed and shaped the world as we know it. We want to swim in those deep streams and be reminded this beautiful story of God started long before us and will continue long after us. We hope, through Lent, that our own small stories will gradually be “woven into the tapestry of the great stories of the faith.” (Wendy Wright, The Rising)

We believe the resurrection is true. We believe we are all in need of continuous resurrections. Lent gives us a framework within which we look forward to celebrating the resurrection of Jesus on Easter Sunday. Through that framework, Lent is intended to keep us aware and remind us of the numerous experiences of resurrection in the ordinary fabric of our everyday lives—resurrection of hope, desire, relationships, wholeness…

Finally, we believe the Church is meant to be a force for good in the world. There is incredible power when a united group of people commit to a season of anticipation and restoration. Even as we acknowledge the historical community of people we are joining, Lent cements forcefully the importance of the shared life of the Church now. The season provides a commonality—a rallying point for fellow journeyers. It is a time we commit to introspection, self-denial, confession, restoration and anticipation together. Individual experiences lived alongside each other, informing and encouraging each other. Beautiful. Inspiring. Right.

In Forgotten Among the Lilies, Ronald Rolheiser writes “the task of Christianity is not to teach us how to live, but to teach us how to live again, and again, and again.” The season of Lent invites us to take our place among “the broken, the loved sinners, those for whom Christ came” and enter this rhythm of learning to live again and again together.

'Gleaned' from Emergent West Michigan
Image 'gleaned' from http://www.holyspiritinteractive.net/kids/biblestories/69.asp

Chris Baltzleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03837444907486475280noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5862561200031195710.post-58017257173737216192009-02-09T09:00:00.000-08:002009-02-09T10:00:58.314-08:00Saving StephenThank you to everyone for continuing to pray for Stephen and Rosemary Shirley.

Check out www.SavingStephen.com, a new website that has been created to help centralize the information regarding Stephen's fight against Hodgkin's lymphoma. Approximately 150 Lakeside leaders came together in hopes of finding some leadership insight and inspiration from an unlikely source -- Matt of You Tube and www.wherethehellismatt.com fame. Matt took his unique dance moves all around the world. Not satisfied, he went dancing back. This time, he got people dancing with him. If you'd like to get in on it, click the link. After watching the video, ask yourself (or your family, coworkers or whomever), "What leadership lessons can be learned from Matt? How did he get people to dance with him?"

Now, if you're still with me, watch Matt tells us how he did it. Again, if we believe that "leaders go first" and view leadership as "getting others to dance with us", what lessons can we take away from Matt's experience?

We discussed our observations in small groups. Here are a few that stuck with me:

Leaders go first

Good leadership is incarnational -- we need to 'move into the neighborhood' of those we are trying to lead. We go to them. We meet them where they are, and lead them to where they need to go.

Leaders are motivated by a hopeful expectation. They expect people to follow. They expect people and situations to grow and change.

Good leadership is transformational (changing systems, means and methods, if necessary, to see transformation, not transactional (merely managing the status quo as efficiently as possible)

Leaders lead by example

Leaders lead from joy and passion

Leaders are creators not critics

True leadership is subversive. This surprises most people, but a leader is always moving people from where they are to where they could and should be. Most always it will be against the grain.

Those who attended received a copy of Bill Hybels' excellent book Axioms: Powerful Leadership Proverbs. You can find it a Amazon or in The Cove at the Folsom campus. I'd love to hear what some of your favorite leadership axioms are. Let's start the conversation.

Chris Baltzleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03837444907486475280noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5862561200031195710.post-4962223784374879372009-02-03T14:33:00.000-08:002009-02-03T14:38:32.929-08:00Men’s Breakfast
Saturday, February 7 @ 7:30 – 9:00am

Join us this Saturday for our Men’s Breakfast and share a hearty meal with the men of Lakeside Church. Here is the update on our worship arts leader, Stephen Shirley. Despite what was said last week, Stephen entered the UCD stem cell transplant treatment this morning. The hope is that this treatment will give Stephen more time to pursure a new course of treatment in Texas. We received the below email from a friend of Stephen's. Take a minute to read the update and consider helping the Shirleys if you are able. Your prayers for Stephen and Rosemary are always appreciated.

......................

Hello everyone!

First, let me start off this e-mail by stating please don't feel obligated in some way to contribute to the below. We can only give what we are able and nothing is expected. I just know that some of you will be willing and able to help and wanted to give you the opportunity to do so...

I am writing today on behalf of one of my best friends, Stephen Shirley. Stephen has been battling Hodgkin's for over 2 years now. He went into remission for a short time only to have the cancer come back faster and stronger. He has been going through chemo therapy for months now with little affect. After his last PET scan it came to light that the cancer is bigger than when he was first diagnosed with the relapse a year ago.

Starting tomorrow, Stephen will be going inpatient at UC Davis Medical Center for a stem cell treatment. He will be cut off from contact with everyone including his wife Rosemary during the procedure because his immune system will be non-existent. This procedure was supposed to be the final clean up of the cancer. However, because the cancer has grown again, this procedure is only a stop gap until something else can be done.

There is a facility and treatment center in Houston, TX that is having amazing results with Hodgkin's like Stephens. In order to start this procedure Stephen and Rosemary must have $40,000 up front. The Stem cell treatment that he starts tomorrow at 9:00 am will be at least 6 weeks, but may go as long as 3 months. That gives us 6 weeks to come up with $40,000 for this procedure.

There is a Trust Fund called "The Stephen Shirley Medical Fund" at Wells Fargo Bank. I realize that times are tuff for many of us, but every little bit helps. Lakeside has partnered with City Impact and other churches to help rennovate a 4-story building from a 35-student Christian Academy to a 400-student academy. The facility will also expand its community services thanks to the rennovations being made this year.

Our team worked on demolition, flooring, and framing. There was lots of hard work and plenty of dust for all involved. You can still participate in this project by going on a future one-day trip.
