While the Camaro SS, with its small-block V-8 is selling well in its first year, typical of high-profile new models, the RS and base V-6 strike at the core of Mustang’s volume sales. And so for 2011, Ford’s 4.0-liter V-6, originally built in Cologne, Germany, eons ago, is finally out.

The new Mustang V-6 is Ford’s first rear-drive application of its familiar 3.7-liter with twin-independent variable cam timing. The Mustang 3.7 includes aggressive deceleration shutoff, piston-cooling jets, polished valvetrain tappets and electric power steering and transmits its power through six speeds, automatic or manual.

And the numbers are impressive: Ford claims 305 horsepower at 6500 rpm, 280 pound-feet at 4250 rpm and 30 mpg with the automatic, on the highway. “We are the only ones who can provide 30 mpg and 305 horsepower,” says Barb Samardzich, Ford’s global powertrain vice president. What’s more, redline is now a Honda-like 7000 rpm.

For those of you keeping score, the Mustang’s new V-6 is 0.5-liters smaller and 41 pounds lighter than the lump it replaces, it has 95 more horses and it’s 2 decibels quieter.
In addition, Ford will offer the V-6 Mustang with a performance package, featuring the GT’s suspension with high-performance brakes, summer tires on exclusive 19-inch wheels and vehicle stability control. Ford figures it will be popular with Mustang’s younger buyers (read, “growing out of the Civic Si”). So the next Mustang-Camaro faceoff won’t just be about 0-60 and quarter-mile, it’ll be about which one can go furthest on a tank of gas, as well.

Thanks to: Motor Trend

LA Show 2009 Highlights: 2011 Ford Fiesta

What's good for Mini is good for Ford, right? Hold on. While the 2011 Ford Fiesta on sale this spring won't range from $20,000 to $30,000+, it easily will stretch into four-cylinder Fusion territory thanks to a long list of gee-whiz features that don't come with the base model.

To get costs down for North American-market prices, Ford has scrapped the European Fiesta's "cheap and cheerful" interior, with its techy two-tone seats and matching dashboard-top colors. The North American Fiesta has black-on-black dashboard tops with contrasting plastic grains, although top-of-the-range the SES and SEL do come with different-colored lower dashes and door inserts and are available with supple leather seats with contrasting piping and stitching.

Ford will offer all trim levels of the Fiesta with the same five-speed manual as in the European version, on sale since October 2008. A new dry dual-clutch six-speed automated manual will serve the vast majority of buyers. Unfathomably, it won't come with a manual gate feature. Ford says market research argued for putting that money into the interior, instead. While it doesn't need paddle-shifters, a manual-shift gate would let young drivers take advantage of what company engineers say has "the spirited feel of a manual with the convenience of an automatic."

With the automated manual, dubbed "Powershift," and the car's 1.6-liter four with twin independent variable cam timing, Ford expects 30/40 mpg EPA numbers.

Other changes from the European model include a Fusion/Taurus-like three-bar chrome grille for the sedan (the hatchback retains the European "look") and U.S. bumper offsets that add 60-mm to the nose. The sedan's taillamps look very Taurus-like. The European car's standard summer tires are replaced with 16-inch Kumho all-seasons and the electric power steering has been retuned slightly. A boron high-strength steel b-pillar support for meeting new U.S. rollover standards adds just 10 pounds to the car. The dashboard has been reshaped slightly for crash standards, and the North American car comes with seven airbags, including a driver's knee bag.

Its long list of features include quad-beam headlamps with LED auxiliary lamps (see the Verve concept), side-mirror repeaters, integrated blind spot mirrors, pushbutton start and "intelligent" access, moonroof, hands-free Sync controls, a four-inch multi-function dashboard display, a "cellphone-inspired" center stack, USB port for Sync and audio jack, ambient lighting with two LEDs front, two LEDs rear and in the cupholders and Ford's capless refueling.

The only item standard on the base S, though, is the capless refueling. And only the four-door sedan is available in S trim; the four-door hatchback starts with the SE trim level. Ford says customers - the car will target Milennials and Baby Boomers - perceive the hatchback as the premium bodystyle, presumably because it's more "Europeanish."

Ford has no plans to sell the two-door hatch in North America, though we'll probably see an SVT, possibly with a paddle-shifted Powershift within a year or two. With its kicky kinetic styling, cutesy colors like Lime Squeeze and Sunburst and 100 Fiesta Movement Agents spreading the word, Ford figures the U.S. will contribute mightily to 500,000 units per year globally. Could happen in the first year ... with all those assumptions counter-intuitive to the U.S. market, will it sell well for a full product cycle?

Thanks to: Motor Trend

LA Show 2009 Highlights: 2011 Hyundai Sonata

You're looking at the single most important car Hyundai will launch in America this decade. While the upscale Genesis sedan has transformed Hyundai's image, the new Sonata is intended to make the South Korean automaker a major player in America's most competitive vehicle segment -- at the expense of Toyota's Camry and Honda's Accord.

Hyundai's done its homework. The all-new sixth generation Sonata is big -- it is classified by the EPA as a large car, rather than a midsize. It is fuel efficient -- standard engine will be the new direct injection, 198-hp 2.4-liter Theta II four cylinder that Hyundai claims will deliver 23 mpg city and 35 mpg highway with the available six speed automatic transmission (a six speed manual is standard). And it will offer something for the enthusiast driver -- a sporty SE version with 200 hp (thanks to a dual exhaust), tuned suspension, and 18-in. wheels.

The quick take: It's as big as an Accord, more fuel efficient than a Camry, and should be more fun to drive than both. And if Hyundai delivers the Sonata with Genesis-like build quality and refinement, both Honda and Toyota should be worried. This could be America's next best-seller.
Previous Sonatas have been relatively anonymous looking sedans. The 2011 car is anything but, with wedgy sheet metal, a bold grille, fashionably oversized headlights, and a distinctive chrome spear that starts at the headlight and runs back along the base of the greenhouse to the steeply raked C-pillars. Depending on model, the car will roll on 16-, 17- or 18-in. multi-spoke alloy wheels.

The interior is also dramatic, with strong shapes and interesting surfaces. The center stack features simple controls, and relatively few buttons. Hyundai will offer four different audio systems, ranging from a standard six speaker unit that includes sat radio and MP3 capability, to a touch screen controlled unit Infinity system with a 400watt external amplifier system. All Sonatas will come with three months of XM Satellite Radio, NavTraffic and Data service, standard Bluetooth hands-free phone capability, and iPod/USB inputs.

The bold new exterior styling is not the only risk Hyundai's taking with the new Sonata. Unlike all its rivals -- which include Chevy Malibu, Ford Fusion, and Nissan Altima -- it will not be offered with a V-6 engine. Instead, Hyundai plans to roll out a turbocharged 2.0-liter Theta II for customers who want more power and torque by the end of the year. For those wanting even more fuel efficiency, a hybrid version is also coming in the next 12 months.

Thanks to: Motor Trend

LA Show 2009 Highlights: 2010 Range Rover Sport Autobiography

When buying a 510-hp supercharged Range Rover Sport seems too plebeian, perhaps the newly unveiled 2010 Range Rover Sport Autobiography Limited Edition would suit you better?

Like the Range Rover Sport Supercharged, the Autobiography Limited Edition -- debuting at the Los Angeles Auto Show -- is refreshed for 2010. That means much more powerful engines and tweaked styling. This special edition adds to that package (and to the base price, of course), enhancing the SUV's design inside and out. The effort is most eye-catching on the interior, where two-tone leather is available in three color combinations. An Autobiography Sport logo can be found in the front and rear headrests, as well as on the wood door panels. We see the interior changes improving an already posh cabin.

Santorini Black is the only exterior color for the 250 Autobiography Limited Editions, which are all equipped with 20-in. Diamond-Turned alloy wheels and a unique grille. The look is more subtle than the attractive 5-spoke wheels available on the regular Supercharged model. The Limited Edition also gets beefier-looking exhaust extensions, something Land Rover should consider implementing on the rest of the line when sales of the Range Rover Sport begin to falter.

Like the identically powered Range Rover Sport, the Limited Edition will sprint from 0-60 mph in 5.9 sec.

Included in the Limited Edition are a number of otherwise optional features like an electronic rear differential lock, adaptive cruise control, HD radio, and a rear seat entertainment system with 10-in. displays mounted in the back of the front seat headrests. Altogether, a regular Range Rover Sport with these options would cost around $80,000. Factor in the extra equipment and exclusivity of the Limited Edition and you are left with its $88,545 price, including $850 for destination.

If you're already set to pay this much for an SUV, why not go all the way?

Thanks to: Motor Trend

LA Show 2009 Highlights:Volkswagen Up! Lite. With a relatively spacious interior and a hybrid-diesel powertrain, this fuel-sipping concept could be the most production-viable Up! yet.

Although theoretically built upon the same "New Small Family" platform as other Up! concepts, the Up! Lite concept looks slightly different from its siblings. Volkswagen's tried to reduce drag by shrinking the front fascia, and the result looks more like a miniature Scirocco than an E-Up! Even though it's both lower and longer than the E-Up!, the Up! Lite has interior space comparable to a three-door Polo, and can easily seat four.

While the one-liter concept made use of a ridiculously tiny turbo-diesel engine and the E-Up! an electric motor, the Up! Lite combines the two into a single package. Motive power stems from the same 51-hp, 0.8-liter two-cylinder turbo-diesel TDI engine used in the 1L concept, but in this instance, it's pared with a 10-kW electric motor. Both power sources channel their energy through a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox.

Power mostly stems from the microscopic TDI, but the hybrid driveline is capable of allowing the electric motor power the car on its own. VW claims the car has 1.2-mile range in EV mode, making it ideal for parking lots, neighborhoods, and other short-range, low-speed scenarios. VW could extend that range by stuffing in a larger battery pack, but the automaker claims the car's effiency would suffer as a result.

Honestly, if the figures given from this car are true, it's hard for any fuel miser to scoff at the Up! Lite. Volkswagen says the car can return approximately 70 mpg on the freeway -- substantially less than the 235 mpg offered by the 1L, but not bad for a vehicle that carries four and offers some additional cargo space.

The 70 mpg figure is accomplished in a few different ways. First and foremost, VW used a lot of carbon fiber and aluminum in the car's construction (both materials even appear in the 18-inch wheels). As a result, the car weighs a scant 1402 lbs.

Further, drivers can make the most of the Up! Lite's efficient powertrain by not using it to its maximum power. By selecting an "Eco" mode, output of the two-cylinder TDI is limited to 36 hp. This is ideal for long cruises, but full power can be dialed in should the driver need to pass (slowly, mind you; 0-60 mph comes in 12 seconds). Better yet, seeing as the TDI is shut off during stretches of coasting, the car's navigation system can route drivers on roads that offer long stretches where the engine won't be needed.

Thanks to: Motor Trend

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://dikarockz.blogspot.com/2009/12/la-show-2009-highlightsvolkswagen-up.html' title='LA Show 2009 Highlights:Volkswagen Up! Still, the party couldn't last forever, and now VW has announced that 2010 will be the final model year for this aging neo-icon.

To commemorate the end of the New Beetle (though an all-new car is said to be in the works), VW will launch a special Final Edition model run, with 1500 cars to be available beginning in Spring 2010. To be sold exclusively in the U.S., Final Edition coupes will feature unique Aquarius Blue paint and a black roof, while convertibles will get a two-tone paint scheme with Aquarius Blue and Campanella White, along with a white top and interior.

Each car will be individually numbered and will include a sports suspension, fog lights, 17-in. alloy wheels, the standard 150-hp 2.5L I-5 engine, and a six-speed automatic transmission. Pricing for the Volkswagen New Beetle Final Edition is $20,240 and $27,170 for the coupe and convertible, respectively, not including destination fees.

Thanks to: Motor Trend

LA Show 2009 Highlights: 2011 Cadillac CTS Coupe

After a long wait—the concept debuted at the 2008 Detroit auto show—Cadillac has officially taken the wraps off the 2011 Cadillac CTS coupe. Originally planned as a 2010 model, the release was pushed back as General Motors slogged through bankruptcy restructuring and the sexy 2+2 will now debut at the Los Angeles auto show before hitting the market in the spring. Rear- and all-wheel-drive variants will be available, while a 556-hp CTS-V Coupe also is en route and will debut later in 2010.

Based on the CTS sedan, the coupe rides on the same 113.4-inch wheelbase, yet is about two inches lower and two inches shorter overall. The seductive design includes a more rakish windshield, as well as blacked-out B-pillars, hidden touch-pad door releases, a unique rear fascia with twin center-mounted exhaust outlets, and an integrated rear spoiler.
A 304-hp, direct-injected 3.6-liter V-6 is the only engine for non-V models and will be backed by a standard six-speed manual transmission—with a clutch and flywheel revised from the CTS sedan—or an optional six-speed automatic. Cadillac estimates highway fuel economy will be as high as 27 mpg. The CTS sedan with the direct-injected 3.6 is rated at 16 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway and manual gearbox and 18/27 with the automatic. Eighteen-inch wheels with all-season tires and a sport suspension will be standard on both rear- and all-wheel-drive versions, while a Summer Tire Performance Package will add sportier 19-inch rubber, likely only on rear-drive models. A limited-slip differential is standard, as is electronic stability control.
The CTS sedan is already a pretty posh place to pass the miles, and the coupe will include the same hand-stitched leather accents and attention to detail, along with similar amenities such as a 40-gig hard-drive entertainment system, a pop-up navigation display, active forward lighting, standard keyless access and remote start, a rearview camera, and a Bose audio system. Fourteen-way power adjustable Recaro sport seats, previously only offered on the CTS-V, also will be available on all coupe models.

Thanks to: Car and Driver

LA Show 2009 Highlights: 2011 Porsche Boxster Spyder

Tossed out the window -- no, out the open cockpit, actually -- are the radio, the air con, conventional door pulls, and more. Porsche says the result is a weight savings of 176 pounds over the Boxster S, making the new Boxster Spyder, at a claimed 2800 pounds, the lightest model in the maker's production-car lineup.

Perhaps stung by criticisms of "diluting the brand" (i.e., Porsche sport/utes and the new Panamera four-door), the iconic German speed factory has countered with a sporting piece nearly as pure and purposeful as James Dean's 1955 550 Spyder. As such, this newest, fastest Boxster also qualifies as the most toy-like model in the range, a pricey plaything for perfect days and writhing roads -- and almost exclusively so. How long would the Spyder's charms last, I wonder, without refrigerated air and the diversion of a radio during a long stop-and-go commute on a blistering summer day? (Not to worry: If you're feeling "unpure," you can pile on A/C, radio, nav, and whatever other options you like.)

So, no, in basic "stripped" form the Boxster Spyder isn't an ideal daily driver; you'll want to be rich enough to own one as your second or third car. Ah, but for those days that call for a leather jacket and driving gloves...

In addition to the jettisoned A/C and radio, the Spyder features aluminum doors (saving 33 pounds), lightweight sport bucket seats (saving 26 pounds), an aluminum rear deck (saving 6.5 pounds), and the lightest 19-inch alloy wheels in the Porsche catalog. Also changed over conventional Boxsters are the side windows -- they're lighter and lower -- and the soft top, which for Spyder duty is a manually erected affair that's little more than a handkerchief for blocking the sun (the lid, which stows away above the engine, isn't even waterproof; indeed, Porsche admits it won't stand up to a car wash).

Thanks to: Motor Trend

LA Show 2009 Highlights: 2011 Toyota Sienna

Toyota exposed its third-generation 2011 Toyota Sienna to the world today at the LA Auto Show and announced that it will be available with a four-cylinder engine when it hits showrooms in February. But while one end of the Sienna spectrum represents value and economy, the opposite end still features V-6 power and a push to make the Sienna's cabin an extension of the buyer's living room. With sheet metal designed in California and engineering developed in Michigan, the 2011 Sienna was clearly developed in America for Americans. Despite a shrinking market segment, Toyota says that the minivan is still a viable model and expects that its new Sienna will attract buyers who may not currently be fans of the segment. A new four-cylinder engine - a 187-hp 2.7L unit plucked straight from the Venza - will be offered as standard on the lower-range Sienna models, while the venerable 3.5L V-6 with 266 hp will continue to offered to those seeking more scoot.

A bevy of brand-new tech and luxury features are optionally available, including a 16.4-in. Dual View widescreen monitor that allows two separate input sources to be displayed at once, second-row captain's chairs with built in ottomans ('Lounge Seating', as Toyota refers to it), and a three-zone climate control system. A Panorama Camera rear view system also makes its debut on the Sienna, using two separate cameras to give the driver a complete 180-degree view from behind the vehicle. The 2011 Sienna is offered in a total of five trim levels - Sienna grade, LE, SE, XLE, and Limited. All-wheel drive is optionally available with the V-6 engine on the LE, XLE, and Limited models, while the four-cylinder motor is available on Sienna grade and LE models. The SE model is offered for those who'd rather have a sports car than a minivan, and features a more aggressive front valence, side skirts, 19-in. wheels, a sport-tuned suspension, and smoked taillights. Pricing has not yet been announced, but we expect to get the full skinny as we approach the 2011 Toyota Sienna's February on-sale date.

Thanks to: Motor Trend

LA Show 2009 Highlights:Honda P-NUT Concept

Yes, it looks as interesting in real life as it does on your flat screen. Honda says its new P-Nut design study (short for Personal-Neo Urban Transport) was created “exclusively around the city lifestyle” and embodies what it thinks is the future of urban mobility.Designed entirely at Honda’s Los Angeles-based Advanced Design Center, it sports a 133.8-in. length, 68.9-in. width, and 56.7-in. height. Its three passengers have equal amounts of legroom thanks to the driver’s front and center seating position.

Although a design study, the P-Nut manages to shed an inkling of light on what Honda hopes to achieve in terms of future model powertrain interchangeability. It’s styling too is said to preview upcoming models such as the CR-Z sports coupe.

Thanks to: Motor Trend

LA Show 2009 Highlights: 2011 Infiniti G

Joining the M on stage was a new 2010 G that had picked up a minor nip/tuck for the new year. On the outside, it features Infiniti Essence Concept-inspired styling with round, swoopy bodywork and a new take on the Infiniti grille. Behind it, an updated 330-hp V-6 or 420-hp V-8 can be found and later a hybrid drive system will join the mix. All will be mated to Infiniti's seven-speed automatic transmission and AWD is optional. Also available is a Sport package that will upgrade the brakes, add bigger wheels and tires and tighten up the suspension.

Inside, the M gets a new dash trimmed in wood with silver powder and a new user interface that help to refine Infiniti's previously button-heavy setup. The 16-speaker Bose audio system also employs Bose's noise-cancellation technology to reduce exterior noise while the new Forest Air system replicates the gentle breezes and fresh smells of the forest. You can read more about the new M in our complete First Drive of the prototype version here, then catch it in the metal at your local Infiniti dealer in the spring.
Thanks to: Motor Trend

New Car: 2011 Volkswagen Amarok

One of the most highly-anticipated new car arrivals of 2010 has broken cover early with Volkswagen Commercial releasing official images and details of the Amarok pick-up. The first ever European pick-up is set to arrive in Australia in the third quarter of 2010 and go head-to-head with the Toyota Hilux.

Production of the Amarok is set to begin in Argentina in December but Australia's will have to wait until after South America and Europe get dibs on the new ute. Right-hand drive versions are set to go on sale in the UK in September, so Australia can expect a similar timeframe.

"We are looking at the second half of next year to get the Amarok in the country," Anke Koeckler, Volkswagen Australia managing director, told the Carsales Network recently. "We are planning our production because we see huge opportunity and right now we are in negotiation and discussion with the guys from Hannover. And it seems pretty good, which is good because it's a pretty important product for us."

Volkswagen, though, understands the importance of the pick-up in the Australian market and it is believed both petrol and automatic versions of the Amarok are under development to better cater for local demands; however officially neither of those two features have been confirmed.
What has been confirmed is that the Amarok will launch in dual cab form with the choice of two diesel engines. The first is a single turbo unit rated at 90kW and 340Nm and a twin-turbo variant that will produce 125kW and 400Nm.

Both engines will be mated to a six-speed manual gearbox and there will be a choice of rear-wheel drive 4x2, part-time 4x4 and fulltime 4x4 using a modified version of the 4MOTION system from the Touareg.

Although the company has yet to release fuel consumption figures it claims that thanks to an 80-litre fuel tank the Amarok will have a range of over 900km.

Measuring 5.25m long, the Amarok will have a payload capacity of up to 1100kg and be capable of towing up to 2800kg. The firm has also revealed there is 1222mm load space between the rear wheel-arches to optimise load carrying capability.

The Amarok will come fitted with an electronic differential lock (EDL), off-road ABS (anti-lock braking system), hill decent assist and hill hold assist for improved off-road performance.

Thanks to: Car Point

Hot News: BMW/PSA's Front-Drive 1-Series

BMW and PSA Peugeot Citroën are set to extend their joint venture operations to include a new small car platform, which could be used to create a front-wheel-drive 1-series as well as the next generation of Minis.

Already involved in the joint design and production of four-pot engines for Mini and PSA models, the two firms are working on a deal to build a new modular front-wheel drive platform.
The planned structure will underpin the next-generation Mini range, as well as successors to the Citroën C3 and C4, Peugeot 308 and the forthcoming Peugeot 208.

“It’s no secret that we have been seeking to extend our joint venture operations. In the end we decided to build on our successful relationship with Peugeot,” said a BMW source. The decision is scheduled to be made public early next year.

But the biggest change would involve the platform’s use in the 1-series. BMW officials have hinted that future incarnations of the 1-series could sit on the same basic structure as the 2013 Mini.

“Nothing is concrete at this stage but discussions are on-going about whether or not BMW should break with the tradition of rear and four-wheel-drive cars,” said a BMW source. “For many in this company it is a taboo subject. But we have to be realistic with the targets we have set ourselves for fuel consumption and emissions, and they clearly favour a front-wheel-drive solution for 2018.”

The platform is said to centre on a front-end module, including the entire engine bay, front suspension and bulkhead, to which each car maker will attach its own rear end. That solution would allow BMW to retain the Mini’s multi-link suspension.

Thanks to: Autocar

Hot News: The Future of Ford Focus Revealed

The man who oversees Ford’s global family of C-segment cars has given a tantalising glimpse of the Focus of the future.

Speaking to Automotive Engineer magazine, Gunnar Herrmann predicted that by the end of this decade the manual transmission may disappear from the range altogether. He also raised the possibility of a turbocharged and electrically assisted two-cylinder Focus.

Herrmann said the third-generation Focus will be based on a version of the EUCD platform that underpins the current S-Max and Mondeo.

One if the biggest gains from this will be the adoption of an electrical architecture that will allow the ‘plug and play’ introduction of advanced, executive-level features on Focus-size models.
The car’s structure will still be made from steel, but more use will be made of hot-formed and boron steels, which are lighter and stronger than conventional steels.

Hermann also revealed that stop-start systems will be “virtually standard” within five years, and that small-displacement two and three-cylinder turbocharged engines will be available before the end of the decade.

Electrical assistance will be offered to cut emissions and improve acceleration.
Herrmann suggested that dual-clutch transmissions — which aid fuel-efficient driving — could result in manual gearboxes “disappearing completely” by 2020.

However, it is the introduction of advanced electrical systems that will make the biggest difference to future Focus drivers.

Driver-adjustable adaptive dampers, lane departure warning systems and traffic sign recognition will all become much more common. Electric power steering systems could incorporate an anti-torque steer feature, too.

In-car internet is on the way, as are more sophisticated connectivity systems for mobile phones as Focus-family cars aim to offer the electrical sophistication of today’s premium luxury models.

Thanks to: Autocar

New Car: 2011 Infiniti M

This is Infiniti’s new flagship saloon, which arrives in the UK next September.

The Infiniti M will be sold in V6 petrol and diesel forms, followed in 2011 by a version fitted with a new high-efficiency hybrid transmission.

Infiniti — Nissan’s luxury division — is pitching the M as a direct rival to the BMW 5-series and Mercedes E-class but won’t release any pricing information until nearer to the car’s launch.
Like the other cars in the Infiniti range, the M is based on the company’s rear-drive FM (front-midship) platform, which places the engine behind the line of the front axle. The car uses double wishbone suspension at the front and a multi-link rear axle and it has speed-sensitive power steering.

The M’s styling was previewed at the Geneva show earlier this year and has very low aerodynamic drag, with a Cd rating of 0.27. Although the structure is a steel monocoque, the doors, bonnet and bootlid are made of aluminium.

Infiniti designers have made huge efforts with the quality of materials in the interior and have even used university researchers to engineer new soft-feel plastics technology. Infiniti also says the 2.9m-long wheelbase is longer than most rivals’ to help ensure “plenty of room for five adults”.

The first model to go on sale will be the M37. It is powered by a 3.7-litre V6 petrol engine that is good for 316bhp and 266lb ft. All M models get a seven-speed automatic and steering wheel paddles. The engine and transmission response can be set by driver to Standard, Eco, Sport and Snow modes.

High-end features available on the M include Blind Spot Intervention (which can automatically steer the car away from danger), Active Noise Control (which cancels out low-frequency engine noise), Forest Air climate control (which uses pulsated air and fragrances to help relax passengers) and Dynamic Cornering Assistance (which uses subtle individual brake control to reduce steering effort during tight manoeuvres).

Active four-wheel steering will also be an option on certain M models.

Thanks to: Autocar

Spied: 2011 BMW M3

The high(er)-performance GTS model isn't the only update for the M3. A computer monitors actuators for the ideal distribution of the heat flows between the engine, transmission and interior. At cold start, the system uncouples the engine temporarily from the cooling circuit to shorten the warm-up phase with its high friction losses.

The 4.2 may be a short-termer, however. Audi is preparing a supercharged 4.0-liter V-8 gas direct-injection engine to supplement, for the time being, the 4.2. While we don't have a timeline, an insider assures us it comes very soon after the luxury flagship's launch. Also rumored to be in the pipeline is a hybrid model.

The power is transmitted through a new eight-speed automatic to the quattro all-wheel-drive system. Audi claims a 0-62 mph time of 5.7 seconds and an electronically controlled top speed of 250 kp/h, or, in the automaker's exactitude, 155.34 mph.

The dynamic shift program now networks with the optional MMI navigation plus system to anticipate curves in its gearshift strategy and avoid unnecessary gear changes. Taking a swipe at BMW's and Mercedes' modern gearshifts, the A8 comes with a selector lever on the center tunnel, shaped like the thrust lever of a yacht. You can change gears with a quick tap of the lever, or use the rocker switches on the steering wheel.

Thanks to: Motor Trend

Hot News: Audi A2 Confirmed

<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5410060808740296386" style="DISPLAY: block; Captured by our eagle-eyed spies, these images show a mule of the next-generation Fortwo city car carrying out some hot-weather tests in the south of France.

Our sources have also revealed that the new Fortwo will form the base for a lager, stretched Smart, currently known as the Fortwo+2.

Limited by its lack of space, the Fortwo has seen itself fall behind more practical rivals such as Toyota’s iQ, and with more premium vehicles on the way, including Audi’s A1 and the rumoured BMW Isetta, Smart has begun work on its own four-seater. The new Fortwo+2 will also get rear doors.

The standard Fortwo will remain a strict two-seater though, with both new cars continuing to be rear-wheel-drive, and housing the engine below the floor at the rear. The added length for the extra seats in the Fourtwo+2 coming from the longer wheelbase.

The Fortwo is expected to arrive in showrooms late next year with the four-seater arriving by 2012. Both cars will be available with a wide range of engine options, and will likely include a hybrid and an electric version. Marketed as a coupe-like premium compact hatchback, the Excelle will hit Chinese showrooms in 2010.

Based on the same front-wheel drive platform of the soon-to-be-unveiled Chevrolet Cruze, the Excelle will go on sale in China with a choice of either a naturally aspirated 116-hp 1.6L four-cylinder engine, a peppier 138-hp 1.8L mill, or a 1.6L turbocharged engine that produces 181 hp and up to 196 lb-ft of torque in Superboost mode. A six-speed automatic gearbox comes standard with all engines and no word was given regarding a manual option.

Although the Chinese-spec Excelle shares a platform with the Cruze, it is actually a closer relative of the 2010 Opel Astra, with similar styling. Both cars receive a revised suspension relative to the Cruze, with rebound springs up front to reduce understeer and give a sportier driving experience. Out back, a Watts linkage is added to the package, rather than a Panhard rod. The changes should make the Excelle a much more dynamic car to drive than the Cruze.

Of course, the big question is whether the Excelle will make it across the pond to U.S. soil, where it could join the all-new Regal and LaCrosse as an entry-level addition to Buick's domestic lineup. The car pictured looks virtually identical to the small Buick GM showed us months ago, although the version we saw was a four-door sedan. In the U.S., a sedan likely makes more sense for both buyers' tastes and Buick's image, so the possibility of a U.S. Excelle coming with four doors instead of five is a strong one. And, of course, Buick could also choose to rename the car for the U.S. market, so we're not even sure if our Buick will carry the Excelle moniker.

What do you think of the Chinese-market Buick Excelle? What engine, body style, and name would you like to see on the U.S.-spec car?

Thanks to: Motor Trend

Hot News Up Date: 2011 Audi A1

Audi will be pegging prices of the A1 close to the Mini, an inside source has revealed.

The upmarket supermini, due to go on sale at the end of 2010, is likely to start at around £13,000 for the base three-door model, although the bulk of the range will retail between £15,000 to £20,000.

The new A1 is set to share a lot of mechanicals with the recently launched VW Polo. Exact details are scarce, but it’s likely to be powered by a range of existing VW group engines and some newly developed motors.

The petrol model range begins with a turbocharged 1.2-litre petrol engine in two states of tune - 84bhp and 104bhp. Further up there will be a turbocharged 1.4-litre petrol with 120bhp and a high-performance, supercharged and turbocharged version of the same unit that puts out 168bhp.

Diesel engines are likely to be a 1.6-litre common-rail injection unit in three states of tune: 75bhp, 90bhp and 105bhp.

Audi sources say that the company is keen to offer A1 buyers a similar ownership experience to that of the Mini. That’s likely to include a wide range of options to personalise your car and the company is planning a all-in service package, designed to give a fixed ownership cost over three or five years.

Thanks to: Autocar

Hot News: Volkswagen Polo is Autocar Car of the Year 2010

The VW Polo is the Car of the Year 2010.

The supermini narrowly edged the Toyota iQ in the final voting, earning 347 points over 337.

The Polo received 59 scoring votes in total from the 59-strong judging panel, including 25 selections as the number one car. In contrast the iQ received 58 votes, with 20 selections as the best car.

The result is determined from a list of 33 new cars which are voted on by European car journalists.

A shortlist of seven cars is then determined, with 59 European judges making their selection. Each judge has 25 points to allocate as they see fit, although at least five contenders must receive points, and the chosen winner must receive more points than the runners-up.

Autocar's editor-in-chief Steve Cropley is one of the judges, and voted the Toyota iQ as his personal favourite, allocating it eight points. He also gave the Mercedes E-class five points, Citroen C3 Picasso and Peugeot 3008 three points each and the Skoda Yeti, Vauxhall Astra and VW Polo two points each.

The full result is below:

1. Volkswagen Polo 347 points, 59 votes, 25 vote wins
2. Toyota iQ 337 points, 58 votes, 20 vote wins
3. Opel/Vauxhall Astra 221 points, 55 votes, 5 vote wins
4. Skoda Yeti 158 points, 54 votes, 4 vote wins
5. Mercedes-Benz E-class 155 points, 48 votes, 2 wins
6. Peugeot 3008 144 points, 49 votes, 2 vote wins
7. Citroen C3 Picasso 113 points, 47 votes, 1 win

Thanks to: Autocar

Hot News: Geely and Ford Strike Volvo Deal

Geely has reached an agreement with Ford on the issue of Volvo’s intellectual property rights, according to a company spokesman.

The European-abased spokesman told Reuters that the major obstacle in Geely’s takeover of Volvo from Ford had now been overcome. Ford has declared Geely as its preferred bidder for the Swedish firm.

The spokesman said if the deal is completed, then Geely will have ownership of all technologies exclusively developed by Volvo.

Ford will be allowed access to any technologies which are crucial to the feature of its business, including safety and environmental features.

The agreement won’t apply the other way around, however, as Geely will not be allowed access or have any rights to any similar technology developed by Ford.

When Ford announced Geely as its preferred bidder for Volvo last month, Ford’s chief financial officer Lewis Booth highlighted the importance of reaching an agreement that was acceptable for both parties.

“Ford’s objective in our discussions with Geely is to secure an agreement that is in the best interests of all the parties,” he said.

“Any prospective sale would have to ensure that Volvo has the resources, including the capital investment, necessary to further strengthen the business and build its global franchise.
“Ford believes Geely has the potential to be a responsible future owner of Volvo and to take the business forward while preserving its core values and the independence of the Swedish brand. But there is much work that needs to be completed in the more substantive discussions that are agreed to take place. We have no specific timeline to conclude the discussion.”

Thanks to: Autocar
