Wedding Day Highlights - Samantha & Dale

This is the final video for Samantha & Dale. I have previously posted a video for the Love Story and one for their Photography Session the day of their wedding. This video has some repeats of the photo session but for the most part is new video I have not posted previously. The clips I used from the photo session I did use different effect techniques, so they would not look the same.

Wedding photography is wonderful and important but there is nothing that conveys the emotion and events of the day like professional wedding video. Photography caputres those flashes of the moment while videography captures the full story. Only video will let you see and hear as you and your fiance exchange your vows and your officiator pronounces you husband and wife. What a treasure that is to have in the years to come.

A Wedding - Rosa & David

It was an honor for me to record the wedding of Rosa and David at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic church in Phoenix. The Phoenix Airport Marriott hosted the reception. Rosa has one of the most infectious smiles I have seen and David is a very lucky man to be the husband of such a beautiful, kind woman.

In August, I purchased a Chevy HHR Panel for a business vehicle. I have been wanting to get some vehicle graphics on it and have been shopping around for sign shops. Well, I finally decided to go with Wright Signs in Gilbert. The reason I chose Wright Signs is because I had come up with a design I liked but I wanted someone to take it the next level. When I visited Wright Signs, Adam, their graphic designer, got 'right' on the computer and showed me some ideas he had. No other sign shop I visited did that!

Yesterday, I took my HHR Panel to their shop and Adam and Doug installed my vehicle graphics. Since I knew I was going to be there four or five hours, I decided to take my small video camera and document the install. So here you go.

A Wedding - Ellen & Allen

Ellen & Allen were married in the LDS Arizona Temple in Mesa Arizona. When Ellen contacted me about video taping her wedding, because of her uncommon last name, I asked if she knew some people with whom I had grown up with the same sir name. And she did. Ends up I attended church with her grandparents, her mother and an uncle who was my same age. Small world.

After I posted Samantha & Robbie's video here, Ellen contacted me because she really liked it and wanted to have hers done very similarly. So, here it is. Ellen, I hope you like this as well.

I shot this with two cameras. My Canon HV-20 was mounted on a tripodd to get wide shots and I handheld my Canon XH-A.

Evening Photography Session

When Megan & David were married, they had a photo session before the wedding ceremony and one after. By the time everyone gathered for the post-ceremony photo session, it was DARK! This video will give you an idea of how well today's professional video cameras can shoot in low light situations.

We used no video lighting except when we were following behind them on the sidewalk and in the closing shot by the pond. The main camera I use is a Canon XH-A1 professional HDV video camera. Also, we shot the crossing and moving shots with a Canon HV-20 HDV video camera mounted to a Steadi-Cam.

A Love Story - Samantha & Dale

Samantha and Dale will be getting married on July 18th and I am creating a love story video for them to play at their reception. One type of music they agree on is 50's oldies so when they said one of their favorite songs is 'Earth Angel' I figured it was perfect to work into a retro 8mm film type of effect.

This is just a short version for the blog. The actual completed video will have multiple locations and interviews. The day we shot this video it was VERY windy. So windy we could not tape the interview outside due to the wind noise. Since I lived nearby, we taped the interview in my living room. I hope you enjoy watching this video.

A Wedding - Samantha & Robby

Samantha and Robby were married in the LDS Arizona Temple in Mesa, Arizona. In the time outside the temple after the marriage, I shot video of the friends and relatives who were awaiting the appearance of the bride and groom. When Samantha and Robby appeared, the photographer only briefly photographed the bride and groom, as well as family and friends, before everyone departed for the reception venue, Villa Siena in Gilbert. What a wonderful, beautiful couple!

Most of this video was shot with my Canon HV-20 mounted to my Merlin Steadi-cam (which I am still learning to master). I shot the wide shots with my Canon XH-A1. I slowed most all the shots down to 50% speed because I felt it went well with the music and to stretch the time of the shots I had.

A Love Story - Kaela & Chase

The original video was 25 minute in length and played during the couples wedding reception June 12, 2008 at The Shanandoah Mill in Gilbert, Arizona where once again I enjoyed working with Jerry and Sarah of Ferguson Photography. I have shortened the length of the video by leaving out most of the couples interview. The video was taped on the grounds of the LDS Arizona Temple in Mesa, Arizona. During the video interview, the lawn sprinklers came on just as Chase is talking about the first time he told Kaela he loved her. This was totally unplanned and sent us scrambling to move cameras and video equipment.

A Wedding - Megan & David

Megan & David were married December 1, 2007 in Chandler, Arizona at The Ashley Manor and this is a fast moving highlight video of their wedding and reception. The day started out very blustery but we were very fortunate that by the time for the ceremony the wind had calmed down. The wedding was filmed with one handheld camera (Canon XH-A1) and one stationary camera (Canon HV20). Alma & Matt Krueger with De Amor Photgraphy did a wonderful job and were a pleassure to work with.

Kami & Vaughn

I filmed this wedding back in August at the LDS Arizona Temple in Mesa. Last night, I was reviewing it and saw a few little things I wanted to touch up and when I was done I decided to go ahead and post it to the blog. It is in our gallery, also.

The "bouncing bouquet" in the black and white segment was a new effect for me at the time. The bouquet just seemed to be talking to me saying do something with me, because Kami, the bride, was just kind of holding it up in the air. So I figured since I had a clean shot of it throughout the scene I would give it a try. I think it turned out pretty good and hope you think so, too.

Najwa & Kevin

Najwa & Kevin were married October 22, 2007 in Chandler, Arizona at the beautiful Castle at Ashley Manor and this is a highlight video of their wedding. I filmed the wedding with a Canon XH-A1 HD video camera which was handheld and one stationary video camera.

What a great couple to work with and Najwa was so kind and gracious. I also filmed the reception which I will post at a later date. The reception was tremendous, due in a large part to the belly dancer, Mahin, who danced for a good portion of the time. I am no belly dancer expert but she was good and she never appeared to sweat or get tired! I would highly recommend her if you are so inclined to want to hire a belly dancer for an event.

Also, it was good to work again with Jerry from Ferguson Photography, too. He does a great job making sure he gets the couple and all the guests posed and photographed along with the candid shots. Let me also get a plug in here for the officiant, Rev. Scott Carter, who did a great job on the ceremony.

Clarissa & Logan

Clarissa & Logan were married September 18, 2007 in LDS Arizona Temple which is in Mesa, Arizona. I really want to thank Sarah with Ferguson Photography for providing the still photos which are included in this video. I like the effect of the photos inserted where they match up with the video.

The second song in the video, "I'm Your man", by Michael Buble was sung to Clarissa by Logan when he proposed to her. Very romantic.

Suzi & Ben - A Love Story

I filmed this video during August in east Mesa to capture the story of Suzi and Ben before their wedding in September. I really enjoy doing Love Story videos because I get a chance to learn more about the couple and have them in surroundings where they are a lot more casual than what their wedding day will be.

At the same time they had their photographer, Sally, there shooting pictures, too. I usually prefer not having photographers with us when I am doing love stories, because it is the nature of things that the photographer poses the couple and I, as videographer, follow behind. With it being early evening, by the time the photographer was finished, I did not have much time before the sun was beginning to set. With love stories I like having the freedom to have the couple to myself and in that way we can get creative with the filming.

During the interviews I had a difficult time getting more than a sentence from Suzi when I asked her questions. I don't think Ben will need to worry about having a wife who will talk his head off.

Raquel & Justin

This was the first wedding I filmed using my new Canon XH-A1 HD camera. Raquel & Justin's wedding was filmed using just the one camera inside the Mesa Hilton in Mesa, Arizona on August 4, 2007. And it was terrific to work with Jerry from Ferguson Photography on this wedding.

Filming in the Hilton was great and Raquel, Justin and the parents could not have been nicer. I always love being able to shoot video of the bride as she is getting ready because it adds so much to the final video. In the Hilton, to make her entrance, the bride comes down the elevator which is really cool. Raquel's gown was beautiful, too. The tulle skirt with the sleeveless, lace top made Raquel look like a princess.

Wedding Traditions & Myths Exposed: The White Wedding Dress

A few weeks ago, Jerry with Ferguson Photography and I were talking and he thought it would be a cool idea to have short videos posted on line that were about wedding traditions and information. Well, that got me thinking and I decided to do just that. So, here is my first installment of what I call "Wedding Traditions & Myths: EXPOSED". It is a little dry, but in time as I do more I hope to be more creative and more humorously irreverent. Plus, improve my narrating greatly. Roberta & Scott

Roberta & Scott were married September 11, 2007 in LDS Arizona Temple which is in Mesa, Arizona. Scott served a two year mission for the LDS church in Brazil and I believe that is where he met Roberta. Roberta's mother and family are all still in Brazil and were not able to be here for the wedding so Roberta and Scott were anxious to get their video online so the family in Brazil, and elsewhere, would be able to share in their wedding.

It is always great to film around the LDS temple in Mesa. The grounds are very beautiful which gives me so many locations for filming. Sarah with Ferguson Photography was the photographer and we have shot together several times. I kind of just follow her around and makes suggestions now and then. She is always very gracious and open to my suggestions.

I post my videos to blip.tv because the quality is better than YouTube or Google Video and blip.tv hooks them up with my blog entries. So cool.

First Official Blog Entry

Well, I finally decided to get a blog up and going. For now, it feels like I am writing to myself because nobody out there is going to be reading and viewing this, yet. That's OK, because in time that will change. Until it does change, maybe I can use this space for a little "self introspection" and self discovery. Maybe I can find out "who is Hal?" "What makes me tick?" Besides, a lot of people have told me I like to hear myself talk so now maybe I will just hear myself think. It's a little quieter for everyone else that way, too.
