Do You Want Joy, Peace & The FREE GIFT Of Eternal Life?

Most people have read on a Christmas card the verse: “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace” (Isa 9:6) But have you ever stopped to consider what it means? This child born in a manger in Bethlehem is the “The mighty God” Himself. Jesus is “everlasting Father” of time; Jesus created time and the world (Col 1:16). He is “everlasting” and has always existed. Jesus is the “ The Prince of Peace.” The only way that you will have true and lasting peace in your heart is to live for “The Prince of Peace” who desires you to know Him. Yet most people use the Holy Name of Jesus to curse with or say “Oh my G-D”. If a friend started to use your name to curse with what would it say about what they think of you? Jesus said “out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh. A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things. But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgement.” (Mat.12:34-36) “for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain” (Ex:20:7) BUT THERE IS STILL HOPE. The reason the “mighty God” entered into His own creation and became a baby, was because even though we rebelled against God “All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way” (Isa 55:6) For God so loved YOU that He “made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: And being found in the appearance as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.” (Phil 2:7-8) The reason Jesus went to the cross was “he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed” (Isa 55:5) Jesus willingly paid the penalty in full for ALL your sin. “Christ died for our sins... he was buried, and he rose again the third day... he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once” (1 Cor 15:3-6)

JESUS OFFERS YOU PEACE OF YOUR SOUL & THE FREE GIFT OF ETERNAL LIFE. He says to YOU: “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and YOU WILL FIND REST FOR YOUR SOULS” (Matt 11:28-29) “whoever drinks of the water that I will give him shall never thirst; but the water that I will give him will become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life” (John 4:14) What are you waiting for? Don't waste your life! You can have "peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ” (Rom 5:1)

I was reminded today of how well-meaning Christians waste their time casting pearls before swine by wrangling with heretics. The love of intellectual fighting is a real problem with Christians that engage in apologetics. In our zeal to contend for the faith once for all handed down to the saints or to sinfully enjoy exercising intellectual one-upsmanship over another, we often forget verses like these:

Do not give what is holy to dogs and do not throw your pearls before swine, or they will trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you to pieces. Matthew 7:6

But refuse foolish and ignorant speculations, knowing that they produce quarrels. 2 Timothy 2:23

But avoid foolish controversies and genealogies and strife and disputes about the Law, for they are unprofitable and worthless. Reject a factious man after a first and second warning, knowing that such a man is perverted and is sinning, being self-condemned. Titus 3:9-11

Experience and Scripture have taught me over the last few years that you are casting your pearls before swine and wasting your time when you engage heretics. That time would be better spent ministering to your own family, engaging in some type of equipping ministry in your local church, or doing one-on-one evangelism and/or open-air preaching. There is a place for reasoning with people from the Scriptures like Paul did in the synagogues (Acts 17:17; 18:4, 19) or preaching to the heathen by starting with creation and moving to the gospel from that starting point (Acts 17:18-31). But we need to notice something; in all those instances, Paul didn't hang around and waste time wrangling with people that weren't interested. He preached, looked for who was interested, and spent time ministering to them (Acts 17:34). If there were no interested people, he moved on (Acts 13:51; 18:6). Paul carefully looked for those who would raise their heads to listen to the gospel. He tells you why he does this in 2 Timothy 2:10,

For this reason I endure all things for the sake of those who are chosen, so that they also may obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus and with it eternal glory.

Acts 16:14 also tells you what happens when God does in His own due time when He brings His elect under gospel preaching,

A woman named Lydia, from the city of Thyatira, a seller of purple fabrics, a worshiper of God, was listening; and the Lord opened her heart to repond to the things spoken by Paul.

I'm not saying we don't need apologetics, we do. I'm just saying that we need to remember that apologetics can only be useful for two things: (1) building the faith of the saints, and (2) stopping the mouth of the unbeliever. That's it. Apologetics has no power to convert. It never will because God didn't ordain it to do that. Before we contend we need to be sure that we are contending for the faith and not a particular philosophical system or to fulfill your own intellectual jollies. In other words, our apologetics needs to ultimately be about preaching the gospel (Romans 1:16), for only it is the power of God unto salvation. It is through the means of the preached word that people are born again (1 Peter 1:23-25). If they don't listen, move on. Otherwise, you may find yourself doing exactly what the Holy Spirit warned you against in the aforementioned verses.

"The faithful minister has a present sight of Christ as his righteousness. He is like John the Baptist. “Seeing Jesus coming unto him, he saith, Behold the Lamb of God!” Or like Isaiah, he saw “His glory and spake of Him.” His own soul is ever watching at Gethsemane and at Golgotha. Oh, brethren, it is thus only we can ever speak with feeling, or with power, or with truth, of the unsearchable riches of Christ! We must have the taste of the manna in our mouth, “milk and honey under our tongue,” else we cannot tell of its sweetness. We must be drinking the living water from the smitten rock, or we cannot speak of its refreshing power. We must be hiding our guilty souls in the wounds of Jesus, or we cannot with joy speak of the peace and rest to be found there. This is the reason why unfaithful ministers are cold and barren, in their labours. They speak like Balaam, of a Saviour whose grace they do not feel. They speak, like Caiaphas, of the blood of Christ, without having felt its power to speak peace to the troubled heart. This is the reason why many good men have a barren ministry. They speak from a clear head knowledge, or from past experience, but not from a present grasp of the truth-not from a present sight of the Lamb of God. The Unfinished Work Of Christ ~M'Cheyne On Christ Our Help In Every Time Of Need

"Ah, believers, you are a tempted people! He suffered being tempted, just that He might succour them that are tempted. The high priest of old not only offered sacrifice on the altar,- his work was not done when the lamb was consumed. He was to be a father to Israel, he carried all their names graven over his heart,- he went in and prayed for them within the veil. He came out and blessed the people, saying, "The Lord bless thee and keep thee. The Lord make His face shine," etc. (num 6:24-26).

So it is with the Lord Jesus. His work was not all done on Calvary. He that died for our sins lived to pray for us,- to help in every time of need. He is still man on the right hand of God. He is still God, and therefore, by reason of His divinity, is present here this day as much as any of us. He knows your every sorrow, trial, difficulty; every half-breathed sigh He hears, and brings in notice thereof to His human heart at the right hand of God, His human heart is the same yesterday, today and forever; it pleads for you, thinks of you, plans deliverance for you.

Dear tempted brethren! go boldly to the throne of grace, to obtain mercy and find grace to help you in your time of need.

Are you bereaved of one you loved? Go and tell Jesus; spread out your sorrows at His feet. He knows them all; feels for you in them all. He is a merciful High Priest. He is faithful too, never awanting in the hour of need. He is able to succour you by His word, by His Spirit, by His providence. He gave you all the comfort you had by your friends. He can give it you without them. He has taken away the stream that you may go to the fountain.

Are you suffering in the body? Go to this High priest. He is intimately acquainted with all your diseases: He has felt that very pain. Remember how, when they brought to Him one that was deaf and had an impediment in his speech, He looked up to heaven and sighed, and said, Ephphatha! He sighed over his misery. So He sighs over you. He is able to give you deliverance, or patience to bear it, or improvement by it.

Are you sore tempted in soul --put into trying circumstances, so that you know not what to do? Look up; He is able to succour you. If He had been on earth, would you not have gone to Him-would you not have kneeled and said, Lord, help me? Does it make any difference that He is at the right hand of God? You are now all following with zeal, as Ruth and Orpah did Naomi, and may weep under the word; but are not your tears crocodiles tears? And, when difficulties come, will you not go back form following your Lord, as Orpah departed form following Naomi? Have you really the root of grace in your hearts? Be not angry with me for putting these questions to you. I am jealous over you, but it is with a godly jealousy: for, alas! how many have put their hands to the plough, and afterwards have shamefully looked back? I only deal with you, as our Lord did with the person that said, “Lord, I will follow thee withersoever thou wilt. The foxes have holes, and the birds of the air have nests, but the son of man, (says he) hath not where to lay his head.” What say you? Are you willing to endure hardness, and thereby approve yourselves good soldiers of Jesus Christ? You now come on foot out of the towns and villages to hear the word, and receive me as a messenger of God: but will you not by and by cry out, Away with him, away with him; it is not fit such a fellow should live upon the earth?

"Brethren I'll tell you this: If all of a sudden you see a brother or sister in need and your first thoughts are not: "O man, how can I get in their shoes and help bear that burden", but rather your first thoughts are: "O man, if I have to help them then I'm not gonna be able to do this, I'm not going to be able to do that". God forbid brethren! Those early Christians sold their homes to help needy Christians. So what if you have to wear old clothes or get the cable TV turned off. Brethren, listen to me: are you ready to stand before the Lord on Judgement Day and say "No Lord, I did not help my brother when I saw him in need, but Lord I had the Discovery channel, Lord I had this great big 90 inch plasma HD, I had that! I didn't help that sister, but Lord look at my i-phone, I had one of those, isn't this impressive?" Prayer Meeting -Change Of Day (Now on Thursday)

Our weekly prayer meeting at Middleton Puritan Fellowship is no longer on Tuesday and has now been changed to Thursday. This is better as people who travel from afar for our Thursday evangelism 4pm-6.20pm in Manchester can also join us in prayer to cry out to God on behalf of the souls who we've shared the Gospel with.

THURSDAY:

"Now I am talking to preachers especially. Don't try and shape great sermons. Try to preach and bring God to people. Forget yourself and forget how you are saying the thing. It is a terrible temptation, isn't it, when you know you have got to go and face people and you want to show them how good you are. You want to show them how you can use English and how well you know your Bible, and how much of the Putians you have read -- and you've read Berkhof as well! People don't, primarily, need to know that you have read Berkhof; they need to know that you are living with Jesus Christ, that Jesus Christ is important for you, and He is important for them."

Dr. Curt Daniel on Bunyan on the Atonement

"John Bunyan (1628-1688) tended towards a more universal atonement. In his Reprobation Asserted, he argued that the atonement underlies the Gospel offer. Therefore, we preach to all because Christ died for all. If the atonement was limited to the elect alone, then the reprobate who hear and reject the Gospel deserve no extra punishment. Furthermore, if the atonement were limited, then no man could know that Christ had died for him and, consequently, saving faith could not contain the essential assurance that 'Christ died for me.'" ~Curt Daniel, The History and Theology of Calvinism (Springfield, IL: Good Books, 2003), 76.
