Outside the box feature....

I have always been fascinated by different alternative photo processes. Recently I have started revisiting some of these historic techniques. Look for them to be featured every now and then on my blog in a post called 'Outside the box.' You may also find some of these works on the sidebar..

Today's 'Outside the box feature' showcases tintypes. The classic tintype also known as ferrotypes or wet plate collodians utilizes some pretty toxic chemicals. The tintypes above are modern tintypes meaning they were produced using a photo emulsion on blackened aluminum. Dripping, streaking and bubbling surface effects are additional characteristics that make the plates unique and one of a kind. To see more tintypes check out my Etsy store.

New Storefront on Etsy!

Hello Everyone! I want to share with you a new opportunity to purchase my work. I have been working hard to get my store set up on "Etsy". Having an Etsy shop will allow me to sell more of my weekly paintings featured here on my blog as well as some other unique pieces that are 'resting' in my flat files.

For those of you not familiar with this site; Etsy is a website which focuses primarily on providing an outlet for individuals to buy and sell handmade items. "The site follows in the tradition of open craft fairs, giving sellers a personal storefront". Think of it as one big 'Gallery Hop' without leaving your couch! But be warned - once you venture there it is easy to get addicted to all the cool things available!

Diana Hooper Bloomfield

My friend Diana Hooper Bloomfield has a beautiful pinhole photograph featured in this issue of Camera Arts. Diana specializes in pinhole and in 19th Century printing techniques, including platinum/palladium, cyanotype, and hand-tinting. Recently she has been working with tri-color gum printing.

In addition to receiving numerous awards, her photographs have also appeared in several publications, including Eric Renner's Pinhole Photography: Rediscovering a Historic Technique; in the Pinhole Journal; the Post-Factory Journal; and in the January 2005 issue of Chinese Photography.

In 2003, Diana co-curated, with Gregg Kemp, "Pure Light: Southern Pinhole Photography" at the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art (SECCA) in Winston Salem, NC, and in April 2005, she curated "The Lensless Image: Contemporary Pinhole Photography," at the Upstairs Gallery, in Tryon, NC. (two shows that I lucky participated in ).

Great Art - Check out some of these finds....

We were able to stop by the Marx Saunders Gallery and see the innovative work of glass artist Tim Tate. Tate was a favorite at Art Basel in Miami last year. His Video Reliquaries combine the art of glass with small digital videos. The current "Narratives" exhibit runs until tomorrow.

Melanee Cooper Gallery has the work of Alicia LaChance. Influenced by Japanese printmaking LaChance uses fresco on canvas, painting layers as well as scraping into these works. Transparent glazes of oil on the painting, create a lacquered surface which adds to the Asian references.

Building the Starbucks Camera

Coffee Traveler Camera
Took some time this week to work on my Starbuck Coffee Camera project. Above is two views of one of the cameras. It is made from the 1-galloon 'Coffee Traveler' available at Starbucks. I have painted the inside of the container black and placed a small pinhole under the spout. In order to change the focal length (to make it a wide angle), I have divided the inside of the box, so that the paper is placed about half way back from the front. The bottom image illustrates the first paper negative from the camera ... so this camera is dialed in (as we say) ... more images to come soon. The positive image is on the right bottom.

Field Trip! Dinosaur World

Boxfotos took a break this week and did not paint a photo to post for sale. There will be a new image for Collectors next week -- Instead I took a short field trip to Dinosaur World in Plant City, Florida. Fun was had by all (and I don't have any children). This is a must see for anyone traveling the I-4 trail. Here is a sample of what we encountered. Those interested in painted Dino photos...you know who you are, email me. I can make it happen.

A Memorable Gasparilla Weekend

Thanks to everyone that came out this weekend to the Gasparilla Art Festival in downtown Tampa and stopped by my tent to check out my work. I really appreciate the support and want to thank again those "collectors" that purchased work.

It was a record breaking weekend for me, one that will long be remembered!
