It was my first time there, and their "whoopi" (buttercream marshmallow filling sandwiched between two brownie-cookies) was delicious! The sprightly Brazilian lady behind the register was kind enough to throw in some free expresso cookies.

They look like the real thing.
She said in her thick accent (The cookies are shaped sort of like an expresso bean). She paused just a beat and then continued:

They taste like the real thing.
At this point I was flipping out; did she just quote the climax to Radiohead's Fake Plastic Trees? There's a special place in my heart reserved for Radiohead lyrics. Phrases like:

One day, I am gonna grow wings, a chemical reaction
have little meaning out of context, but take on a life of their own inside a Radiohead song. I just never imagined hearing those lyrics repeated back to me, in a perfectly normal situation!

monsurnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5796336512563375760.post-71300141120707656762008-08-26T08:00:00.003-04:002008-08-27T00:04:30.773-04:00Ennio Morricone - Cinema ParadisoEnnio Morricone - Cinema Paradiso

One of my favorite movies of all time, and one of my favorite movie soundtracks, is Cinema Paradiso.

monsurnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5796336512563375760.post-81489077505995721092008-08-25T08:00:00.002-04:002008-08-25T22:39:12.503-04:00Ray Barretto - Urban Dance SquadRay Barretto - Urban Dance Squad

From Ray Charles to Ray Barretto. We were wandering around the Brooklyn Flea yesterday when I heard this familiar tune blaring from a cassette tape in a tiny little boom box. The company is sort of a music-label for the 21st century, providing the technology and infrastructure for artists to distribute their work.
A lot of companies are trying novel and innovative ways to distribute music (such as Amie Street and Sellaband). The sets are just magical; you can feel the energy from playing old favorites that haven't been heard in a while for a hometown audience. Sometime during the break before the encore, this song came on the loudspeakers at the show. It was kinda disorienting; it felt like Wilco was covering this song.

I've been away for a few days so I haven't been able to post. I'm sure that's going to happen from time to time. It was a beautiful moment.

monsurnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5796336512563375760.post-11738147334188387002008-08-01T08:00:00.000-04:002008-08-01T08:00:00.249-04:00Of Montreal - Heimdalsgate Like A Promethean CurseOf Montreal - Heimdalsgate Like A Promethean Curse

Other than the name, Of Montreal shares nothing in common with the city. Montreal has a great music scene; in fact, the Osheaga music festival is going on there this weekend. I'm closing out the week with bands somehow related to Montreal. First up are Malajube; they are one of the few French-Canadian bands to make it big on the indie scene. I'm not sure what they're singing about, but here's a translation of the lyrics. It sounds like its so cold even polar bears are taking the bus.

monsurnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5796336512563375760.post-90664663198901318212008-07-30T08:00:00.000-04:002008-07-30T08:00:00.929-04:00Spoon - Black Like MeSpoon - Black Like Me

monsurnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5796336512563375760.post-65513366737908928312008-07-29T08:00:00.002-04:002008-07-29T23:05:05.545-04:00Dinosaur Jr. - MickDinosaur Jr. - Mick

Both Husker Du's The Living End and Dinosaur Jr.'s Hand It Over were rereleased on June 10th. I was struck by one part in particular from author Joshua Ferris:
Initially, I disliked them immensely.

I couldn’t get into Finn’s spit-spoken delivery. He floats a heavy assault over the music, like he’s staring it down in the middle of the rink just before the fight.
I can remember feeling the same way about this band. That spoken word delivery walks a fine line; pile on too much, and it can come off as preachy and pretentious. But all that turned around when I saw them live. Craig Finn is absolutely intense when he delivers those words, without a hint of irony or disdain; he has a real respect for his characters and a real joy for rock and roll.

I experienced that with the Pixies as well. I can distinctly remember buying Doolittle for Here Comes Your Man, and being almost repulsed by the loud, driving randomness of Debaser. I put the CD away for about 2 weeks. But all that time there was a little voice in the back of my head, singing "Debaser, Debaser, Debaser". I didn't understand it, but the song caught a hold of me and wouldn't let go. So I put the CD back on and gave myself up to it. And that's how I met one of my favorite bands of all time.

A lot of the songs and the art that we cherish can challenge or even repulse us at first. And this is a great thing. Its something completely new and cool entering the walls of our mind and blasting them open. I feel like this happens less and less as you grow older; I doubt I would feel the same about The Pixies if I heard them for the first time today. Which is why I think its wonderful to have found another favorite band in The Hold Steady.

monsurnoreply@blogger.com1
