What is it?

The search engine has been around since 1945. In was first thought up by professor Vannevar Bust setting forth the concept of computers as a flexible storage and retrieval system. Bush's essay "As We May Think" described his ideas on hypertext and memory. In it he wrote, "A record, if it is to be useful to science, must be continuously extended, it must be stored, and above all it must be consulted" (Atlantic Monthly, July 1945). Today we have Google leading the way with 3.90 billion searches, Yahoo! followed with 2.0 billion, and Microsoft web sites with 782 million just for the month of May 2007. Ask Network and Time Warner each had another 384 million searches in in May.

Today no one searches the Internet, they "Google" it or "Yahoo!" it. As you can see, savvy marketers quickly seeked out new ways to improve their search engine position for their websites. This quickly lead to Search Engine Optimization (SEO). Rather than scroll through pages of search engine results pages, users will refine what they are searching for. Being in the first five listings of a search engine returned is considered the hot zone for traffic. Most users will click in this area, or refine their search phrase. In 2006 ZDNet reporting on Yahoo! Analyst presentation (Yahoo!: Searches More Sophisticated and Specific, Bogatin, Donna, May 2006) indicated that the average search query length was 1.2 words in 1998, 2.5 words in 2004, and 3.3 words in 2006.

The war to win the position in the glorious first page or top 10 results will continue to wage as long as search engines continue to use the current key word system. Search Engine Optimization is a daunting task and should not be undertaken unless you get profession help or do considerable research. Their are many scams and black hat seo practices that you do not want to be part of. They may get you results at first with many popular search engines but as they catch on, you will get penalized and often very harsh. Many people starting out with a website may practice black hat seo practices and not even now it.

digitalwebmarketing.comhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12175482631326956575noreply@blogger.com0
