In the thesis class today, we made a concept map which draws all the ideas and terms that we could think of, and tried to make connections between them. Thanks to Tolga, rJ and Jason.

Terms: Surveillance, monitor, control, command, authority, politics, spy, invasion, protection, crime, security, UN, panopticon, prison, orwell/1984, rule, order, public, privacy, space, time, exposure, reveal, display, see, be seen, care, don't care, webcam, CCTV, watch, observation, routine, loop, repetition, narrative, TV show: big brother, game, play, sound, get attention, meet people, emotion, reaction, behavior, peep, daily life, bagel, donut, policemen, government, power, abuse, minority, hidden, justice, poll, prevention, mirror, video, camera, film, tape, evidence, boundary, license, law enforcement.

Those terms can be divided into three groups:

1. Security – monitor, control, command, authority, politics, protection, crime, UN, panopticon, prison, orwell/1984, rule, order, policemen, government, power

2. Daily life – people, routine, behavior, bagel, donut, policemen, repetition

3. Boundary – public/private space, reaction, emotion, invasion

Key terms:

1. Public space vs. private space – a space within a camera’s sight is considered to be a public space, otherwise, is considered as a private space. If there is a webcam in a bathroom, the bathroom is a public space. If a video camera only films 2/3 part of a room, this 2/3 part is a public space, and another 1/3 part of a room is a private space.

2. Reaction – what is the reaction to being watched? Will people behave differently if they know they are being watched?

3. Psychological effects – why do some people want to be watched online 24/7?
