Cell phones aka mobile phones use radio waves to transmit voice and data. These radio waves are transmitted at different frequencies. They work just like regular radio stations transmission do which is at varying frequencies.

GSM cell phones work within four frequencies 850 MHz 900 MHz 1800 MHz 1900 MHz. The third generation of cellular phone standards and technology is known as 3G, upgrade of 2G. It is based on the International Telecommunication Union family of standards under the International Mobile Telecommunications programme.

By using the radio spectrum in bands identified, which is provided by the UTI for Third Generation IMT-2000 mobile services, it subsequently licensed to operators. 3G uses .6 MHz channel carrier width to deliver significantly higher data rates and increased capacity compared to 2G networks.

The .5 MHz channel carrier provides optimum use of radio resources for operators who have been granted large, contiguous blocks of spectrum. On the other hand, it also helps to reduce the cost to 3G networks while being capable of providing extremely high-speed data transmission to users.

It also allows the transmission of 384 kbit/s for mobile systems and 2 Mb/s for stationary systems. 3G users are expected to have greater capacity and better spectrum efficiency, which allows them to access global roaming between different 3G networks.

3G cell phones are designed to work on these networks. Most 3G phones still come with build in GSM frequency bands (850/900/1800/1900mhz) so they can be used on 2G GSM Networks in places where 3G capaiblity isn't available or upto par GSM Networks can be used for voice and data.

An example would be the T-Mobile G1 Phone it has 3G HSDPA 1700 / 2100 Mhz Frequency Bands Built into it. The HSDPA 1700/2100 Mhz allow it to run on T-Mobile 3G network.

The T-Mobile G1 also has 2G GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900 mhz frequency bands please don't confuse these 2G bands with 3G. a lot of phones are 2G GSM with these four bands but this doesn't mean they can run on a 3G network.

"We had a lot of work to do, obviously, to get in a position where Apple and AT&T would feel good about Best Buy Mobile carrying it, and that's what we've done in the last 18 months," said Shawn Score, president of Best Buy Mobile.

Nokia, which already owns 48% of the UK-based firm, intends to develop its software to compete with Google's planned Android operating system.

Nokia said Sony Ericsson, Ericsson, Panasonic and Siemens had agreed to sell their stakes in Symbian.

It added that Samsung was also expected to accept the offer.

For its part, Symbian said the takeover was "a fundamental step" in the establishment of the Symbian Foundation, which is expected to start operating in the first half of 2009.

The foundation will bring together Nokia, AT&T, LG, Motorola, NTT Docomo, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, STMicroelectronics, Texas Instruments and Vodafone in collaboration on a new, royalty-free open software platform for mobile phones.

LONDON (Reuters) - The world's top cell phone maker, Nokia, unveiled two new models on Monday aimed at the business market dominated by the Blackberry, but Research in Motion Ltd shares rose because investors believe the maker of the popular handset is safe.

The new Nokia (NOK1V.HE) phones, meant to refresh the somewhat aging lineup of corporate offerings at the Finnish company, were widely expected after leaks on the Internet.

Nokia shares closed 2 percent lower in Helsinki at 16.57 euros, while RIM (RIM.TO) stock closed 5 percent higher at C$144.21

"This is not going to change anything," said Nomura analyst Richard Windsor. "They've got to do much more, they have to do a complete offering. The problem is they don't offer device independence and they don't have the embedded position that RIM does."

An 8-gigabyte version with the new features will go for $199 when it goes on sale July 11, and a 16 gigabyte model will cost $299, the Cupertino-based company said.

Current iPhone owners who buy a new model and sign up for a new AT&T contract won't have to pay any penalties to get out of their current contract, AT&T spokesman Michael Coe said. And anyone who bought an iPhone in an AT&T store after May 26 can return it before Aug. 1 for full credit against a new one — less a 10 percent restocking fee.

North American growth was propelled by the popularity of Research in Motion Ltd.'s BlackBerry phones and Apple Inc.'s iPhone, and bodes well for the rumored introduction of second-generation iPhone next week.

Apple sold 1.73 million iPhones in the first three months of the year, taking a 5.3 percent share of the worldwide smart-phone market. The iPhone was launched in the U.S. last June, and overseas markets have been added gradually. The phone is still not available in most European countries, or in Japan or China.

Smart-phone sales in North America were 7.3 million units, up 106 percent from the first quarter of last year. RIM, with a U.S. market share of 42 percent, was the main beneficiary.
