In 2007, in northern New Hampshire, a black bear Sow gave birth to five healthy young. There were two or three reports of sows with as many as 4 cubs, but five was, and is, very extraordinary. I learned of them shortly after they emerged from their den and set myself a goal of photographing all five cubs with their mom - no matter how much time and effort was involved. I knew the trail they followed on a fairly regular basis, usually shortly before dark. After spending nearly four hours a day, seven days a week, for more than six weeks, I had that once-in-a-lifetime opportunity
and photographed them. I used the equivalent of a very fast film speed on my digital camera. The print is properly focused and well exposed, with all six bears posing as if they were in a studio for a family portrait.

I stayed in touch with other people who saw the bears during the summer and into the fall hunting season. All six bears continued to thrive. As time for hibernation approached, I found still more folks who had seen them, and everything remained OK. I stayed away from the bears as I was concerned that they might become habituated to me, or to people in general, and treat them as `approachable friends. This could easily become dangerous for both man and animal.

After Halloween, I received no further reports and could only hope the bears survived until they hibernated.

This spring, just before the snow disappeared, all six bears came out of their den and wandered all over the same familiar territory they trekked in the spring of 2007.

I saw them before mid-April and dreamed nightly of taking another family portrait, a highly improbable second once-in-a-lifetime photograph.

On 25 April 2008, I achieved my dream.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_9yl-FwYIQeU/SlTZx_cCxAI/AAAAAAAABTA/-hi-tZ6SjKY/s400/image0022.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5356145309716235266" />

When something as magical as this happens between man and animal, Native Americans say, We have walked together in the shadow of a rainbow. And so it is with humility and great pleasure that I share these exhilarating photos with you. Do pass them on!

Sincerely, /Tom Sears.

These animals know what to do to stay cool...

As the temperature swells in the Tampa Bay area, Busch Gardens animals are doing what comes naturally to beat the heat.
Because most species in the park are native to Africa or other tropical or sub-tropical climates, they have natural adaptations and behaviors to help them thrive in high temperatures. Hippos and Asian small-claw otters spend time in the water to cool off. Rhinos wallow in mud pits to beat the heat.
Also helping the animals to stay cool are the naturalistic habitats at Busch Gardens. Lush forests, waterfalls, rocky overhangs and plunge pools in exhibits such as Myombe Reserve, Jungala and the Edge of Africa mimic the animals’ environments in the wild, providing shade in the summer and sunny areas in winter.
For more information on Busch Gardens Tampa Bay, visit www.BuschGardens.com.
<img width='1' height='1' More heated and also rescued Australian animals here, here and here.

Australia has had a record heat wave with devastating fires as a result.
Koalas if you don't know are not social and don't come out of trees or down to the suburbs very often. But the main thing is that they don't actually drink water normally at any time. All their food and water source is provided from the eucalyptus leaves that they eat. That's why they sleep about 22 hours of the day because the calories and liquid intake is not enough to keep them awake long enough, but they consume enormous amounts of leaves in that time. So.. the following photos are even more amazing once that fact is known.
<img width='1' height='1' She found the mother dead from a car accident, and the baby must have popped out of the mother during the accident. The tiny baby buck laid in his mother's blood on the side of the road. Our friend Angelea cleaned off most of the blood, and her and her mother Sakkara wrapped up the baby in a towel to bring it over to us. Without a mother, the fawn had little chance for survival, but we were determined to see her through the night until we could contact a local woman who is licensed to raise orphaned deer.

Check out Deer in the yard for more videos and pictures.

SeaWorld Orlando welcomes flamingo fluffball

Pictures by Jason Collier/SeaWorld Orlando

Walker, a Caribbean flamingo, explores his habitat at SeaWorld in Orlando. Hatched just four weeks ago, Walker eats plenty of fish, krill, hardboiled egg and cereal and as an adult will feed on a special diet formulated just for flamingos. In fact, the trademark bright pink color of Walker's future feathers is caused by carotenoid pigments that occur naturally in a variety of plant and animal life and are responsible for the red and orange coloring in many birds. SeaWorld's avian experts expect Walker to grow into his adult plumage in about three years.
