Ruth & Luis - Wedding Highlights

It's not every day that we get a request to use Stevie Wonder's 'She's a Bad Mamma Jamma' in a wedding video. But I have to say that for Ruth & Luis - it works sooo well !! I love this video for so many reasons - it was such a great day, a great couple and bridal party and they have chosen a great soundtrack for the video.

Following their ceremony on Observatory Hill, Ruth & Luis held their reception at The Wharf Restaurant at the Sydney Theatre Company.

Photography was by Lucas from Inlighten Photography. As always, Lucas & team were excellent to work with.

Zarene & Jonathan - Wedding Highlights

There must be something about fast-food restaurants ... you may remember Jessica and Bruno (posted here last month), who met while working at McDonalds. Zarene & Jonathan met while working at Oporto ... seems like Sydney's take-away joints are where it's at to find love!!

Zarene & Jonathan held their reception at The Country Trader at Alexandria. What an awesome venue! By day, it's an antique store - trading amazing furniture and all sorts of beautiful wares. On March 1st, it was transformed into the setting for Zarene & Jonathan's reception. I have to say that it's very cool to sit on a chair with a $15,000 price tag ... wouldn't want to spill your drink!

A sneak peak at Amelia and Greg's wedding - filmed just 2 days ago. What an awesome event! I think that the trailer sums up how amazing the wedding was better than I could describe in words.

Amelia and Greg's wedding was also our first attempt at a live webcast. Thanks to ustream.tv - it was successful! At one point we had 38 viewers watching from all around the globe. Gotta love technology :)

Wow! What a wedding! Krystal and Jason's wedding was beautiful, emotional, fun-filled ... the cutest little flower girl ever !! Their wedding had it all !!

Married at St Charles Borromeo at Ryde, with the reception at Le Montage, Leichhardt. Photography was by our good mates JP and Patrick at Passion For Pixels. I have also featured a few of their fantastic photos below the video, including one that JP took of me in action.

I have to also give a special mention here to Utopian Fire. Made up of husband and wife team Za & Be, Utopian Fire are professional fire dancers who performed at Krystal & Jason's reception. They were sensational !!

Jessica & Bruno Highlights

Bruno is a very funny guy ... just ask him ! As he said in his speech, 'without him - a lot of people wouldn't have laughter in their lives' :)

Jessica and Bruno were great fun and we really aimed to capture the essence of the day in their video. The reception was held at Sydney's Luna Park, and the bridal party had the opportunity to ride a couple of the attractions there before launching into a great reception in the Crystal Ballroom.

The reception featured an impromptu performance from Rugby League legend Steve Roach, singing 'Doctor Doctor' and 'Bat out of Hell' alongside MC - Lou Greco. Entertainment was also provided by 'The Rat Pack's Back' - who were simply sensational!

It was great to once again work with our good friend Nathan from WG Photography.

I am very excited to present this highlight video and I hope that you enjoy it.

USA Trip

I recently returned from the most amazing 2 weeks in the USA. What an awesome trip! I could write volumes about the whole trip - but will attempt to keep this post to a readable length and will just mention some highlights.

1) Erin & TJ's wedding
A definite highlight for me was filming with Elysium Productions in Orange County (just south of Los Angeles). In what was a truly spectacular wedding at the most amazing venue, I was very privileged to film alongside Alex & Julie Hill. What a great experience to see the Elysium team in action and to be a part of the team for a day. The team put together a same-day-edit which is playable below.

I would like to thank Alex & Julie for being so welcoming and for allowing me to contribute to such a great wedding film. I can't wait to see the Arthouse edit, including the footage from the Canon 5D MK2.

2) Re:Frame - Austin, TX
The main reason I flew to America was to attend the Re:Frame event in Austin, Texas. Re:Frame is an educational event put together by four of the top wedding filmmakers in the world - and featured 7 amazing presentations.

The workshops featured presentations by:
* Julie Hill of Elysium Productions.
* Patrick Moreau and Konrad Cyzstowski of Still Motion.
* Bruce Patterson of Cloud Nine Creative.
* Jason Magbanua.
* Kristen * of Bliss Productions.
* Chris Jones of Mason Jar Films.
* Philip Bloom.

It was a truly amazing event; not only for the information and education that I got from the presentations, but also for what I learned from the other attendees. There were so many extremely talented wedding filmmakers attending, who I am now proud to call friends. It was so much fun meeting everyone!

I think it's worth noting that there were only 4 Australian wedding filmmakers there. This is indicative to me of a rare dedication to our art by only a select few. The Australian representatives were Matt Ebenezer (Shadowplay - Toowoomba, QLD), Evro & Helen Moudanie (Moudanier Pictures - Sydney), Abraham Joffe (Abraham Joffe Videographers - Sydney) and myself.

There were many gems of information within each of the presentations. I am very excited about putting all I learned into action. One of the standout presentations was from Patrick and Konrad from Still Motion. 3) NAB trade show - Las Vegas
The first part of the trip was in Las Vegas where the world's largest video trade show was being held. NAB is HUGE! There are so many companies exhibiting there that it was hard to know where to start. Abraham and I will be presenting at the next AVPA Sydney meeting on some of the highlights.

One thing that definitely stood out to us was the buzz around the new DSLR cameras - such as the Canon 5DMKII and the new Lumix DMC-GH1. In the right hands, the images coming from these cameras are simply amazing. (You can see a sample right here on our blog). There were many support options for these cameras on show. One of the most popular stands was the Cinevate booth - which featured various setups for the 5D, Brevis 35mm adapters and rail and slider systems.

Aside from the trade show, Las Vegas was so much fun! We met a bunch of great people, saw as many of the casinos as possible and also caught Cirque Du Soleil's "O" at the Bellagio which was fantastic!

4) A couple of days in Los Angeles

We were also fortunate to have a couple of days in Los Angeles. That included catching up with some local videography legends (pictured above), as well as a day at Magic Mountain - which is heaven for a roller-coaster addict like myself! Plus I also spent a day with Alex & Julie seeing some of the sights of Hollywood and Santa Monica ... I even got to meet Spongebob Squarepants (which impressed my kids!).

I love the game Roller Coaster Tycoon - and this was just like walking around inside the game :) I loved it!

Thanks to everyone I met for making it such an amazing trip and for being so awesome! Can't wait to get back there, or to see you down here in Oz!

Kathleen and Miro were married in a traditional Serbian Orthodox ceremony at St Lazarus Church in Alexandria. It was a beautiful ceremony, with a vocal choir in the loft and Father Miodrag leading the wedding rites.

Photography was by Chris & Kate from Uber Photography. I have included a selection of images from Uber. The location shots were taken around the Redfern rail yards which gave a great grungy feel to the shoot.

The reception was held at Angelo's on The Bay at Cabarita. As you will see in the highlight clip - a fantastic location, and exceptional food :)

Canon 5D Mark2 Wedding Trailer

Ruth and Luis' were married on Sydney's Observatory Hill just 2 weeks ago.

We chose Ruth & Luis' wedding to trial the new Canon 5D MKII camera in the hands of the exceptionally talented Guy Lerner. Guy's usual position at a wedding is taking beautiful still photos - but with the amazing video capabilities of the 5D we wanted to see what we could come up with. I think Guy captured some truly beautiful footage here ... let me know what you think by leaving a comment.

Rasha & Joseph Short Form

Rasha & Joe's wedding features some of my favourite photo shoot footage. Photographer Damien Ford from Evoke Photography chose the pine forest at Centennial Park for their location shoot - and I'm sure you'll agree it was a great choice for some gorgeous footage.

Rasha & Joe opted for a short form edit - which runs for just over 20 minutes. I think this was a great option - as there were so many great moments within their wedding. The ceremony was held at St Michael's Cathedral - Darlington, Sydney. The reception was held at the ABIA Award-winning Waterview at Homebush Bay.

Amy & Cameron Highlights

We love to find emotional content within any wedding that we film - but occasionally we find one that really stands out and makes a great emotional connection.

Amy & Cameron's wedding was filmed by Justin and edited by Crystal. Just quietly, Crystal confessed to shedding a tear when watching the completed edit. I think she did an amazing job, as did Justin.

Photography for Amy & Cameron was by our good friends at Uber Photography. I think that Kate & Chris (Uber Photography) captured some stunning images that really captured the country feel to the wedding. I have copied some samples of their work below the video.

Chantelle & Dylan were married just a few days ago on Sunday 22nd February.

A combination of an amazing couple, great settings and my new camera made this wedding trailer essential! This is just a short teaser for the wedding highlights that we will create over the coming weeks.

Chantelle & Dylan's wedding was also our first opportunity to work with celebrant Helen Williams and photographer Darryn McKay - both of whom were fantastic to work with. I look forward to more opportunities to work together.

Misato & Ben Wedding Highlights

On Saturday 15th November, Misato and Ben were married ... for the 2nd time :) Misato and Ben held their first wedding, a traditional Japanese wedding ceremony in Japan a few weeks before travelling to Sydney for their wedding here with their family and friends in Australia.

The wedding ceremony was held at St Phillips Uniting Church in Sydney, which is a beautiful old sandstone church filled with character. Speaking of character - the minister Joe was fantastic!

Photography was by our friends Kate & Chris at Uber Photography.

The reception was held at the Sydney Opera House marquee. The lighting and decor of the room were beautiful and made for great-looking footage. Something I hadn't seen before was the breaking of the sake barrel - a Japanese wedding tradition akin to the western tradition of cutting the wedding cake.

A Story About Love

Reading the title of this blog post, you may be expecting to read about one of our fantastic couples. Well naturally, all of our couples have their own unique love story - and you will see some of those unfold in our videos.

This love story is about a different kind of love - the love for what we do as wedding filmmakers. It's a story that often goes un-told, but has been beautifully expressed by Laura.

The author is Laura Moses, who along with her husband Steve, runs Vantage Point Video in Southern California. Steve and Laura are amazingly talented people who have provided much inspiration for our own D'nM wedding films.

Rachel and Simon were married at the Jehovah's Witness Kingdom Hall in Campsie in a ceremony conducted by Reverend Peter King. The reception was held at the Conca D'oro Events Centre in Riverwood.

AVPA Meeting

Something that I am passionate about is improving the quality of the video being produced in Australia. Not only improving the quality of the videos our own studio is producing, but assisting other studios by way of education and opportunities to learn. It is my philosophy that 'a rising tide raises all ships' and I believe that better standards of video production in Sydney / Australia will benefit the whole industry.

One way that we can do that is through professional associations such as the AVPA (Australian Video Producers Association).

If you are a video producer reading this post - I would encourage you to get in touch with me to find out about our next Sydney meeting. All professional / budding video producers are welcome to come along and check it out. There are also meetings held regularly in Melbourne and Adelaide.

The photo above was taken on Monday night at our recent meeting. Our guest speaker was Multi-Award-Winning Australian Cinematographer - Piet de Vries. Piet spoke about the basics of good composition, story-telling, lighting and also about filming for High Definition.

The next Sydney AVPA meeting will feature a guest speaker who will be talking about quality audio recording techniques and equipment.

Dance Concert Videos

This year we were privileged to once again film the end of year concert for Jayz Dance Company in Canberra. We also filmed this year for Centre Stage Academy in North Sydney.

Unfortunately there were many other dance studios who we were unable to film for due to wedding commitments. We love filming dance concerts - so please get in early to book your date (about 12 months in advance is suggested).

ABIA Award 2008

A HUGE thank you to all of our couples who voted for us in the 2008 Australian Bridal Industry Academy Awards. On Tuesday 9th December we attended the awards night held at the Waterview Convention Centre.

From 48 video companies nominated within the Video Production category, we were one of 12 Finalists. John O'Meara from the ABIA announced the Top 10, then the Top 5. We were very excited to still be in the running at the announcement of the Top 3 - and finally to be announced as the WINNER for 2008 !!

It is a great honour and first & foremost I thank you all for having faith in us in the first place and secondly for your votes.

We would also like to congratulate all of the other winners and finalists.

Melissa & Travis Wedding Highlights

Melissa & Travis met when Melissa was just 12 years old, so this wedding has been a long time coming! They are a couple who are very much in love, which is evident throughout their wedding video.

Emma & John's Wedding Highlights

Sharon & Gary's Same Day Edit

On Saturday we had the added excitement of a same-day-edit for the wedding of Sharon and Gary. Sharon and her bridesmaids got ready at The Establishment Hotel in Sydney, which is also where the reception was held.

With many of Sharon and Gary's guests and family being from overseas, we were sure to include a few of Sydney's icons in the location shoot.

Emma & John's Love Story

I have been waiting until today to be able to post this clip. I had to wait until Emma & John's wedding day to be able to put the clip on the blog. Their wedding day was yesterday (which was a fantastic day - and I can't wait to put their wedding clip together).

We displayed the love story video just before Emma & John were announced into the reception hall. The video received a fantastic response from the guests and was the perfect way to introduce the newly married Mr & Mrs Filan to the reception hall.
