McTeague's on Polk

It's been a while since you've been able to say, "Meet me at the saloon."

But thankfully, the wait is over. Welcome to McTeague's Saloon, opening today in Polk Gulch.

Named after Frank Norris' literary cult-classic McTeague, Myles O'Reilly's new bar isn't short on history: It's housed in the first building to be rebuilt on Polk Street after the 1906 quake, and the space used to be Tortola's, home of SF's first margarita.

Step inside and you'll find framed prints of Old San Francisco adorning the walls, a few turn-of-the-century wagon-wheel chandeliers hanging from the cathedral ceiling and shelves stocked with some 100 commemorative Jim Beam bottles (note the 1984 one with a computer theme).

Veer left toward the redwood-topped bar and order one of a dozen beers on tap—like the house McTeague's Pale Ale, or a 25-ounce Belgian Red. There's also a full bar (they acquired the old Barleycorn's liquor license), which will focus heavily on bourbon, whiskey and scotch, and an abbreviated food menu of small plates and "toasties" (mini cheese-stuffed sandwiches).

If you're hanging out for a while, fire up the jukebox and take over a booth, or cue up at the pool table in back—just steps from the donkey, birdcage, lantern and shovel display.

Which would all make sense if you'd read the book.

New Korean Barbecue in Culver City

When you want something done right, as the saying goes, you do it yourself...martini in hand.

So you won't mind cooking up your own meats at a sleek new Korean barbecue spot (plus lounge) in Culver City—Gyenari opens today.

Once seated in the main room (booths on either side are best), roll up your sleeves and get to work grilling your proteins over the heat at the center of your table. (A down-draft system keeps the room smoke-free—nice touch.) Of course, if you're not into doing all that work, the wait staff will help you out...otherwise you might not even notice their presence, since the owner claims to have trained them to stealthily serve "ninja-style."

If you want to avoid the grill thing entirely, stick to the front lounge, where Korea gets California-fied, for lunch, dinner or happy hour. You can follow your Gyenari Martini with Edible Orchid with the Jeon Jeon (small Korean pancakes with applewood bacon and white cheddar) and some Paper Fried Chicken. And for dessert, warm Green Tea Cake Donuts arrive with a raspberry-buttermilk glaze for you to dip them in.

Okay, so you still have to do a little work.

Korean barbecue gets you all fired up — and you’ve got the chesty cough, holey shirt, and smokey hair to prove it.

Now that Gyenari is open, we’ll just have to take your word for it. The new KBBQ restaurant and lounge takes a more modern, less Rescue Me approach to traditional Korean cuisine.

For lunch or dinner, hit the patio, lounge, or main dining room, with its massive saffron-hued blossom mountainscape mural, booths, and 32 grill tables with individual downdraft systems.

The menu features family recipes for japchae (soy garlic-sauced glass noodles with prime rib and veggies); jeon jeon (crispy pancake with shrimp, calamari, and kimchee); marinated bulgogi, wagyu beef, free-range chicken, and kurobuta pork belly; and fresh tastes like Seoul tacos and garlicky black cod.

Thanks to Facebook, the whole wide world can see you basking in a bikini and sucking face with a stranger (thanks, “friends”).

Let Lindsay Garvey save your soul (or at least some dignity). The local photographer has launched a portraiture biz, snapping subjects in curiously cool settings.

Inspired by Avedon and French film noir, Garvey works with clients to come up with an appropriate backdrop and wardrobe, even scouring prop stores to set the perfect stage.

Throw on your favorite vintage dress for a retro series in Granny’s kitchen, bring an upholstered chair outside and plop down for kitschy juxtaposition, or slip into a booth at a diner decked in a formal frock for a bit of whimsy.

Choose your favorite shot and have her blow it up on stretch canvas for something different.
