The blog's been quiet for a while, but we're still here working hard to save you money.

It's busy around here as always. You may have noticed we launched a new an improved login and sign up process recently. We moved a bunch of the signup details to the beginning of the process to make it easier to get it out of the way when creating a new account. If you're a new user, let us know how you found the signup.

Circuit City is Going out of Business

This morning, Circuit City posted this message on their website:

Circuit City would like to thank all of the customers who have shopped with us over the past 60 years. Unfortunately, we announced on January 16, 2009, that we are going out of business.

It's a sad day, and we're sorry to see them go. They've been one of Price Protectr's most popular retailers for years and (personally) one of our favorite places to shop.

The economic crisis is hitting everyone pretty hard these days, but that's all the more reason to use Price Protectr! (Where else can you find sales without even looking for them?) If you have friends ore family who could use a little extra money in their wallet, tell them about Price Protectr!

Price Protectr launches LightningSale.com!

We're always looking for ways to get more great deals out into the hands of Price Protectr users. When we first launched, all we offered was price protection. Over the past year and a half we've expanded to add price watching & targeting, deal alerts, price drops of the day emails, RSS feeds, and more -- all features to help you find the best deals and keep more money in your wallets.

Prices tend to drop quite a bit right around the holidays and we wanted another way to highlight all the great sales - so we launched LightningSale.com. It covers seven of the most popular categories of consumer electronics; HDTVs, digital cameras, camcorders, GPS devices, blu-ray, memory & storage, and gaming.

Each section highlights the most recent price drops in that category and even gives it a "Lightning Score" so you know how good of a deal it is without having to do any math!

Just like the sales on Price Protectr, the prices for these items can go back up any time, so jump on a deal if you find something you like! And, of course, all the category pages have RSS feeds so you can peruse the price drops using your favorite feed reader.

Price Protectr has been working on a site re-design for some time now, and it should launch soon. We may give people a sneak preview--let us know if you want to be one of the first to see the new design when it launches, and tell us what you think of the new logo below.

Recently, we've heard from a lot of sbcglobal.net users that they've stopped receiving our messages. We're trying to resolve this issue with AT&T, but in the meantime we encourage you to sign up for Price Protectr with a non-sbcglobal email address. If you don't have another address, we recommend signing up for a free Gmail account. You can even set up your new Gmail account to forward to your sbcglobal address automatically.

If you've been using Price Protectr with an sbcglobal email address and have stopped receiving emails, please send us a note and we can update your email to a non-sbcglobal address.

NukePrice Now Integrated with Price Protectr!

Our friends over at NukePrice have integrated with Price Protectr! They have a cool plugin for Internet Explorer that reminds you to price protect your purchases when you add them to your shopping cart. Here's an excerpt from their blog:

Great news! We have integrated price protection with PriceProtectr.com. If you install our IE plugin and shop at 100+ supported retailers' website with Internet Explorer, we will notify PriceProtectr and get your purchase protected. Our IE plugin has no toolbar at all and notify you only when you add an item to the shopping cart. You can even get price protection automatically without any clicks.

So if you love using IE, head on over to their site and check out the NukePrice plugin! And, if you're just shopping around, you can still the Price Protectr Toolbar for Intenet Explorer to search for deals and watch and target prices. It's a killer combo to help maximize your online shopping savings!

With the economy in turmoil, we're all trying to get the most bang for our hard earned buck. Here are 7 money-saving tips for shopping online.

1) Deal Websites
Ask your friends which site they visit first when shopping online. Odds are Amazon.com will be the #1 response. The best source for online bargains is widely overlooked. Bargain hunting websites such as Dealoco.com exist solely to find the best deals on the web for you! And these sites do all the heavy lifting when it comes to sorting out the deals from the duds. Dealoco even goes so far as to provide product reviews, price comparisons, and a unique "Grief Factor" rating for each deal.

2) Clearance Sections
Another great source for bargain basement prices is the clearance section that can be found on many popular retailers' websites. For example,Toys "R" Us and Babies "R" Us are two great places to find killer deals on baby and kids items.

3) Amazon Gold Box
The Internet's #1 retailer provides "Gold Box" deals on a daily basis. These deals typically run for only a few hours each, so you may have to act fast if you see something you like. To find these deals just look for the little gold treasure chest on the top of the amazon.com homepage.

4) A Deal-a-Day
Deal-a-day sites have increased in popularity over the last few years, but the original - and by far most popular - deal-a-day site is Woot.com. Woot offers ridiculously low prices on a new product every night at midnight. Wine lovers should check out one of Woot's spin-offs, wine.woot.com.

5) Online Outlet Malls
There are some truly outstanding deals to be had in the online outlet stores. The items listed on these pages are often factory refurbished, so buyer beware if you're not the type to buy refurbished goods. Here are a few of the most popular online outlet stores:

If you have your mind set on a particular make or model product, a great starting point is a price comparison engine such as Pricegrabber.com. These engines will instantly find and compare prices on just about anything. Pricegrabber will even calculate shipping costs as well as provide product reviews and merchant ratings.

We've been promising an IE toolbar for a while and it's finally arrived. It has all the same great functionality as the Firefox toolbar and works in Internet Explorer versions 6 and 7.

It's now a simple image which means you can post it anywhere -- your blog, email signature, forums, My Space, and just about everywhere else. We've even added a FAQ about how to add the widget to your Facebook profile. You can find the updated HTML code in your account settings page.

Tonight we're happy to announce the Beta launch of our Price Protectr widgets!

The first one is our Hot Deals Widget. The Hot Deals Widget lets visitors search for deals and add alerts. It also lists the most recent price drops so you can help your visitors find the latest great deals.

The second is Your Savings Widget. Your Savings Widget will show your friends how much you're saving! Anytime something you've protected drops in price, your widget will update automatically.

I guess it's technically Two-Fer Wednesday (thanks to the holiday weekend), but you get two new retailers either way! Today's two-fer adds a couple more frequently requested retailers without price protection policies; B&H Photo and Tillys.

We've been adding a lot of retailers without policies lately, but after Amazon discontinued their Post Order Price Guarantee this weekend, we'll get back to retailers with price protection for the next few weeks.

Price Protectr announces Price Protection for its Amazon buyers!

Many who have bought through Amazon have used Amazon's Post-Order Price Guarantee. The guarantee allowed the user to get their money back on the difference of any Amazon price drop within 30 days of buying an item from Amazon.

Users bought with the confidence of getting the lowest Amazon price at the time of purchase and up to 30 days later, a confidence even more important in an economy where more and more people need ways to save money.

It has come to our attention that Amazon has ended their price protection guarantee. It appears that any items ordered as of today will no longer be eligible for price drop rebates at Amazon.

Price Protectr has always been a fan of Amazon (we're die-hard Amazon customers ourselves). Many thousands of Price Protectr user enjoy shopping there, and we lament the loss of this customer benefit.

In light of this development, Price Protectr has decided to accelerate the launch of a new service that will enable faithful Amazon customers to still enjoy the benefits of Amazon's great service while retaining the peace of mind that came from price protection.

Within 60 days, Price Protectr plans to offer price protection to Price Protectr users who shop at Amazon. Details will be announced, but here's the long and short of it: If you're a Price Protectr user who buys from Amazon through one of Price Protectr's services, you'll automatically receive a refund of some or all of the difference between the Amazon purchase price and the reduced Amazon price for a period of time after your purchase.
