Considering the nightmare it is to fly from Tokyo to New York, an upgrade can prove the difference between heaven and hell. When flying to San Francisco two days ago, I unfortunately did not have any luck getting upgraded, but it is hard to be lucky every time.

Leaving Tokyo at 4 PM and arriving in San Francisco at 9 AM, the only goal for the day is to stay awake until at least 9 PM. While not very easy, it is the best way to get over a jet lag. Luckily, San Francisco provides plenty of sightseeing opportunities for anyone trying to stay awake. After checking in at Le Meridien, we strolled over to Chinatown and quickly found a Vietnamese restaurant serving fantastic pho. There was hardly a Caucasian person in sight, and the restaurant was filled with Asian faces. If you want to feel like you're somewhere in Asia without actually having to fly the 15 hours to get there, Chinatown in SF is a good choice.

Afterward we walked down to the Ferry Building, which these days serves as the most popular market in town. It is a fantastic place to go shopping for organic products. With all the cheese, chocolate, and other temptations available, eating yourself to death seems like a tempting proposal. Oddly enough I bumped into Didi, a friend of mine from New York, whom I had not expected to meet in SF. This yet again proves that the world is a pretty small place.

Exploring the waterfront attractions in SF can keep you occupied for an entire day. We especially enjoyed watching the seals sunbathe at the Fisherman's Wharf.

Conman in NYC Nearby Central Park

The following was written on August 9, but I never got around to posting it:

This morning, I decided to walk from my hotel to the Whole Foods Market at The Time Warner Center for breakfast. On my way there, I was stopped by a young man who claimed to have dropped his car keys in the sewer grate. As a result, he needed money to take a bus back to his university (USD $7.50), and in short this was his story.

He provided more details to make it all sound very convincing, though the story in itself seems rather implausible. Rather poorly dressed, why would a student own a car and drive it from a school located over 1.5 hours away? Why would you leave your car without your wallet? Finally I asked him what was his license plate number, and he plainly told me that he had no idea. I walked away, and he apparently gave up.

While clearly not particularly educated, the young man showed signs of emotional intelligence. He shook my hand and introduced himself, also asking for my name, thus ensuring that we were no longer strangers. Additionally he made some references to not being a weirdo or a black criminal (his skin color was black), so by refusing him I would feel prejudiced or perhaps even racist. In hindsight it is easier to see that the guy was simply a conman, and it will likely seem obvious to anyone reading this blog. However, when meeting a conman in real life, it is much easier to get fooled.

Emails From Crazy People

Now, this is bound to give you a chuckle!

Help Shut Down Ahmadinejad's Website

I am currently supporting the efforts to shut down Ahmadinejad's website. Then type in the Ahmadinejad's website http://www.irib.ir/ and set it to reload once per second. Personally I am leaving a browser window open to reload this page 24 hours a day (that is 86,400 loads per day!).

According to CNN.com, Iran is doing is best to shut down pagereboot.com, but hopefully Ahmadinejad and his thugs will not be successful.

According to the Sydney Morning Herald, additional websites to shut down include President Ahmadinejad's blog ahmadinejad.ir, the Justice Ministry's justice.ir, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' mfa.gov.ir. I have opened separate reload tabs for these websites, and currently all of them seem to be down.

I also want to applaud the efforts of several netizens to allow Iranians free access to the Internet through proxies.

VG1, VG2, VG3, VG4, Dagbladet1, Dagbladet2.

Is Erik Solheim Naive?

Erik Solheim, a Norwegian Government minister, is currently featured on the BBC program HARDtalk. Since BBC normally has a very obvious leftist slant, one would expect Erik Solheim to have a relatively easy time. On the other hand, it is always more difficult to answer questions in English when it is not your native language. In either event, I am looking forward to seeing the interview on BBC.

According to the Norwegian leftist newspaper Dagbladet, BBC decided to interview Mr. Solheim after reading a translated version of an opinion piece that he wrote Dagbladet on Mars 27 this year. In the article, Solheim stated that: "I am proud that one of the hallmarks of Norway today is that we are nearly always willing to talk to everyone. This has given us a special role in a number of conflicts. Because we could talk to Hamas and were thus among the first to establish contact with the Palestinian National Unity Government, we have had unique access to the negotiations in the Middle East conflict. In Sri Lanka we were among the few who had contact with both the Tamil Tigers and the authorities. We met with the Nepalese Maoists before anyone else. Now the Maoists are represented in the national assembly and the Prime Minister is from their party. We talk to communist guerrillas in the Philippines, and have contact with rebel groups in Burundi and Sudan. When the parties in strife-torn Zimbabwe decide to establish a Government of National Unity we start a dialogue with all of them. The fact that we talk to someone doesn't mean that we agree with them on all issues. We take the opportunity to present our views".

In the BBC interview, Erik Solheim was asked whether his willingness to talk with all kinds of dictators and terrorists makes him a little naive, to which Erik Solheim responded that boycotts generally just make conditions worse.

To this statement, I would like to ask Mr. Solheim why he has singled out Israel as the only country in the world that he wishes to boycott. For some odd reason, Erik Solheim's political party (The Socialist Left Party) is willing to talk and trade with all terrorists and tyrants, but does not wish to have anything to do with the Jewish state of Israel.

Regarding his unsuccessful attempts to secure a peace deal in Sri Lanka, it would also be interesting to ask whether his efforts indirectly lead to the destruction of the Tamil Tigers. Finally, I would like to ask what efforts he is making to maintain a dialogue with the independence movements in occupied Kurdistan and Tibet.

Bali's Population Density Much Higher Than Japan's

Believe it or not, but Bali's population density is 1,448 /sq mi while Japan's is 872.8/sq mi (check it for yourself on Wikipedia). Not exactly a place I would call paradise on earth. Remember that Japan's population is concentrated in a few extremely dense areas, for instance Osaka's population density is 30,803 /sq mi. The problem in Bali is that people are spread out all over the place, leaving very little space for the wildlife and beauty that once dominated the island. For example, the biggest (and perhaps the only real) national park in Bali covers just 10% of the island's total area. Perhaps I would have enjoyed Bali more if I had visited a few decades ago, when there were people still alive to tell tales of the now extinct Balinese tiger. It should also be mentioned that people in Bali don't smile any more than they do in Thailand.

Perhaps I am being a bit harsh, but I have not been impressed by Bali so far. Staying in Nusa Dua, an area developed just for tourists, may not have been the best choice in the world. From what I know, this place used to be a fishing village. The international resort we are staying in could easily be in Thailand or the Philippines, it does not really matter anywhere what South-Eastern country you are in. Not to mention that a coral reef was destroyed to build this place.

Yesterday we spent a day mainly relaxing on the beach, and in the evening we enjoyed dinner in Kuta, famous for being bombed by terrorists in 2002. Today we took a tour of the island, but did not see much of the natural beauty that I had hoped for. Our guide was capable of speaking some Japanese and some English, but not sufficient to tell us anything interesting about the sights we visited. We should perhaps have forked out the money and arranged a tour through our hotel, though that would have cost me a liver + a couple of additional body parts. In total our tour today cost just $50, so at least we are not bankrupted.

Flying Over The Equator On Garuda Airlines

I am currently sitting on a Garuda Airlines flight to Bali, and we are just about to cross the Equator. While I am always somewhat skeptical about flying third world airlines, the plane we’re on seems reasonably new and the stewardesses are both friendly and professional. Their uniforms are surprisingly attractive, and I am glad to see that the short skirt concept is a hit in Indonesia. Alcohol is served for free, and a Japanese couple sitting nearby has already been drinking beer for several hours.

Inevitably, when boarding the plane today my thoughts went out to the passengers who died on the flight from Rio de Janeiro to Paris last week. I was not the only one startled to learn that airplanes travelling across the big oceans are not tracked by radar. When watching the live news on CNN, it quickly became apparent that no one had any idea where the plane had gone down. It is still not clear whether any of the debris that has been found is actually from the plane. With no or little debris to speak of, and with the black boxes unreachable at the bottom of the ocean, it must be awful for the families of the passengers that they likely never will find out what happened. A few Norwegians were also on the flight, including a couple of prominent business owners from Bergen. My heart goes out to everyone afflicted by the disaster.

Despite the Air France crash, air travel remains the safest way to travel. The accidents that occur mainly result from pilot errors, of which Malcolm Gladwell lists a few in his recent book “Outliers”.

Our vacation in Bali will be a short one, and I expect to be doing some work while there. Only a few weeks have passed since our trip to Thailand, where we visited Krabi and Phi Phi Island. The highlight of our trip was a couple of dives we did on Phi Phi Island. Yuka fulfilled her dream of seeing several sea turtles swimming around in their natural habitat, and the ocean life was overall quite impressive. It was difficult to imagine how the islands were completely destroyed by the tsunami just a few years ago, but life is now back to normal with few signs of what happened.

Phi Phi Island is first of all a backpacker destination, and became particularly famous when Leonardo DiCaprio filmed “The Beach” there. While the backpacker hostels and bungalows are extremely cheap, we elected to stay at a resort further north on the island. Phi Phi Island Village is only accessible by boat, and the 20-30 minute trip there is actually quite costly. Since the price is set by the hotel, tourists are charged at close to European prices. Compared with the resorts we stayed at in Krabi, Phi Phi Island Village was disappointing in many ways. Its main redeeming quality is an absolutely amazing beach that stretches on for hundreds of meters, and dining on the beach is quite an unforgettable experience. Unfortunately, the bungalows are rather simple and run-down. Most staff members speak little or no English, thus it is close to impossible to get information or answers to anything. However, the biggest let-down is the exuberant internet prices, and absurdly the pricing of the internet cards vary depending on when you buy them. It would make sense if they perhaps had a variable price on usage (for example using the internet in the early morning could be cheaper than in the evening), but no. Phi Phi Island Village has a discount on internet cards bought between 8 AM and sometime in the early afternoon, and this policy simply did not make any sense to me at all.

Phi Phi Island Village is still a nice spot to stay for a few days. However, since it is easy to feel trapped because of the isolated location, do not overstay your welcome.

Retard Answer Of The Week: Ove Vanebo

The leader of Youth of the Progress Party, Ove Vanebo, more than hinted of a lack of intelligence when answering a question posed by his own political party this week. On the Progress Party's website, he is asked whether his party's efforts to legalize assisted suicide are consistent with the Progress Party's Christian profile.

Mr. Vanebo's answer, which is provided under the sub-title "Not In The Bible", states as follows:

"There is nothing in Christianity saying you can not do this (i.e. assisted suicide). We are doing it today already. Think about how many people take abortions, and how many lives are lost in wars".

As a brief article in Wikipedia explains, euthanasia is only defended by a very small number of liberal Christians. Abortion is also considered sinful by all the major religions, including most forms of Christianity. However, the most ridiculous comparison is with lives lost in war. Mr. Vanebo is basically arguing that assisted suicide should be legalized as lives also are lost in war.

There are many valid arguments both in favor and disfavor of euthanasia, but Mr. Vanebo should probably stay far away from religious questions in the future. A better answer would be that the Progressive Party already have several policies that would be opposed by most Christians, and that the party's position on euthanasia just adds one more to the list.

VG 1, VG2, VG3, Dagbladet 1, Dagbladet 2.

Might As Well Give Asylum To Nazis

VG, TV2 and Dagbladet report today that 7 members of the Taliban have been granted asylum in Norway during the last 12 months. One of the men admits to having worked as a torturer for the Taliban, but he was granted asylum in Norway as he comes from a part of Afghanistan that is not considered safe. Ironically the area will be a little bit safer now that the Taliban torturer has left Afghanistan to live on welfare benefits in Norway.

While there are not many Nazis around anymore, I assume Norway will be equally welcoming to war criminals from other parts of the world. In my May 17 blog entry, I commented on a former Taliban health minister that has been living on welfare in Norway since 2001. During this time, he has established his own terrorist network in between beating up his young daughters.

While the Nazis are mainly gone, the Taliban are unfortunately going strong in different parts of the world. One of Denmark's leading child psychologists, Dion Sommer, points to research showing that the development of children suffers from spending too much time in kindergartens. The 49-year-old man came to Norway in 2001 and has been living on welfare benefits ever since, and while not officially working he has been functioning as the imam of a radical mosque in Oslo. He has apparently been in trouble with the law already after beating up his 14-year-old daughter.

When not beating up his daughters or preaching in the mosque, the former health minister has been leading an informal terrorist group in Oslo consisting of 20+ men. Luckily The Norwegian Security Service has been on their case for quite some time. I want to take this opportunity to thank Norwegian taxpayers for providing a livelihood for this great man during the last 8 years.

Jewish Graves Desecrated In Oslo

While the case is receiving limited coverage in the Norwegian media, VG and TV2 report that several Jewish graves in Oslo have been desecrated with Nazi symbols and other messages (picture is by Tom Bob Peru Aronsen of NrK). Just a couple of typographical errors have been fixed:

Novotel seems to specialize in airport hotels, and the Bangkok property is conveniently located close to the airport. Unfortunately it is not sufficiently close for you to walk there, but the transportation from and to the hotel was efficient.

This was my second stay at this property, and I have not used any of the hotel facilities except for the breakfast restaurant.

While I did not have breakfast included in our room rate, we still ate at the hotel in the morning. However, here is the odd part. After checking into the hotel in the evening, I paid for internet access. When getting up in the morning, I found an envelope that had been tucked under my door. Per prior experience, I expected the envelope to be the preliminary bill, so I did not even bother to open it. When entering the breakfast restaurant, I responded negatively to a question about having breakfast vouchers and instead provided my room number. After eating breakfast, I asked to sign the bill, but to my surprise I was told that the amount had already been settled. While I was under the impression that my rate did not include breakfast (it had been a while since I had made the booking), I obviously did not feel like making an argument.

When returning to the room, to my surprise I discovered that the envelope I had received contained breakfast vouchers with a handwritten note stating "On Account". When checking out a few minutes later, I got the final bill and noticed that breakfast had indeed been added to my bill. We asked if my wife's airline employee card would qualify for a discount in the breakfast price, but was told that it would not. This seemed odd, as the restaurant staff had told us the card indeed qualified for a discount (unfortunately we could not settle the amount at the restaurant as they told us the amount had already been settled).

My breakfast experiences with Novotel do not end there. When staying at the former Novotel Garden Plaza Saigon (currently Parkroyal Saigon), I was charged for breakfast although I had breakfast included in the rate. Complaining to the hotel staff proved pointless, so I took my complain directly to the Novotel headquarters in France. After several emails, they admitted the error and sent me a hotel voucher for a slightly higher amount than what I had been overcharged. Since the voucher had an expiration date of just a few months, I tried using it for lunch at Novotel in Vienna, but was refused as the voucher apparently only could be used for accommodation - odd as I had been overcharged for breakfast. Anyway, I ended up not being able to use the voucher.

Anyway, be careful of Novotel's business practices, it is not the most ethical hotel group in the world.

Also, check out my review of Novotel Guangzhou Airport Hotel.

Kawasaki Halloween Parade Video

I previously posted some pictures from the 2008 Halloween Parade in Kawasaki. The story made news all over the world, and even serious newspapers such as The Telegraph covered the story.

Instead of letting the rather embarrassing story slide into obscurity, Marie Høglund this week appears in Norway's largest gossip magazine to explain her version of the story. According to Marie, she is embarrassed and wants to apologize to both her family and her new boyfriend. After having thought about the issue for a while, her magnificent brain came to the conclusion that appearing in the media would be the best way to do so.

While it is easy to laugh at this story, it very well could have ended in a tragedy. The driver of the car, Martin Seland Kjelsås, has not surprisingly commented that he had problems driving while Marie was sitting on top of him. He should be lucky to have lost just his driver's license, though it can be argued that Marie should loose her license as well. After all, she jumped on top of him, not the other way around.

Muhammad Youssef al-Najjar Responsible For Munich Massacre

Another unrelated article in VG today refers to Muhammad Youssef Al-Najjar as "an activist".

Accidentally, the son of Muhammad Youssef Al-Najjar is the current Palestinian "ambassador" to Norway. Both his parents died in the subsequent gunfire".

Dagbladet has also published this article, which was originally written by The Norwegian News Agency (a wire service that serves many of the largest Norwegian media outlets).

Norwegian Lawyers Should Rather Sue Their Own Government

VG reports that six Norwegian lawyers have filed a suit in Norway asking that a number of Israeli politicians and military personnel are arrested if they ever come to Norway. The reasoning is that the Jewish individuals named in the law suit ordered the recent attacks on the Arab terrorist organization Hamas.

The six Norwegian lawyers should be able to keep themselves busy if they intend to sue any foreign national that potentially has committed crimes against the vague concept of "international law". In order to relieve themselves of this burden, the lawyers have decided to single out a limited number of Jewish politicians, though their decision obviously has nothing to do with anti-semitism. It is simply a pure coincidence that they have chosen to focus only on Jewish individuals.

With the logic they are using, perhaps the lawyers should also sue their own government for complicity in the killing of civilians in Afghanistan. Norway has had military forces in Afghanistan for quite some time, and Norwegians are certainly indirectly or directly responsible for some of the civilian deaths that have occurred during the last few years.

Iran Is An Apartheid Regime

During the ongoing joke of a conference titled the "World Conference on Racism", the Norwegian foreign minister refused to leave the room during a speech by Iranian dictator Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. The latter is spearheading a group of rouge nations that have managed to hijack the conference in order to turn it into an anti-Israeli campaign.

While countries such as Canada & the United States are refusing even to participate in the conference, most other democratic countries have sent low level delegates. Norway, a tiny country of just over 4 million souls, has instead decided to join the dictators and thugs at the conference in order to engage in "dialogue". Neville Chamberlain would have been pleased.

The Norwegian foreign minister, Jonas Gahr Støre, is actually a rarity in the current Norwegian government in that he is not a fool. Most likely his hands have been tied by the far-left Socialist Left Party, which is part of the coalition government currently ruling Norway.

In either event, it is ironic that Holocaust-denier Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is even allowed to address a conference on racism. Iran's treatment of women is similar in many ways to the treatment of blacks under South-Africa's apartheid regime, and human rights abuses are a daily occurrence. Amnesty International reports on a wide range of human rights abuses:

"large-scale arrests, incommunicado detention and torture--have taken place in the context of recent unrest among the country's Arab and Kurdish and Azeri ethnic minorities. Demonstrations held to protest violations have been met with indiscriminate use of violence; several of the victims have been children. Religious minority communities--including Bahais and Muslims practicing Sufism, have also been faced increased persecution in recent months. In recent months, the Iranian authorities have been carrying out a widespread crackdown on civil society, targeting academics, women's rights activists, students, journalists and labor organizers. Hundreds of trade union activists--in particular activists from the Union of Workers of the Tehran and Suburbs Bus Company were arrested as part of measures to prevent planned strikes. Lawyers, web loggers and others who have spoken out against human rights violations have themselves been targeted for abuse".

Jonas Gahr Støre is wasting his time by discussing human rights issues with thugs like Mr. Ahmadinejad. Perhaps his time could be spent more constructively in a different location, say Sri Lanka?

Dagbladet is covering the UN story in several articles (1, 2, 3, 4) and so is VG (1, 2).

Forbes Magazine: "I Just Can't Wait to Be King"

The March 30, 2009, issue of Forbes Magazine included an article on Saudi Prince Alwaleed titled "I Just Can't Wait to Be King".

While the Forbes article is somewhat uncritical and seeks to present the prince as a very modern figure, unfortunately the online version of the article does not contain the same pictures as the print version of the magazine. Simply reading the article gives the impression that Mr. Alwaleed is a feminist, stating for example that "his open support of women sets Alwaleed apart from the more conservative Saudi royals. Nearly 65% of the staff at his palace and at Kingdom Holding are women. Inside his offices and his palace, women do not wear the abaya, the long-sleeved black robe and head scarf that women in Saudi Arabia are required to wear in public".

However, the picture presented tells quite a different story. Just look at the palace ladies, not to mention the text stating that "Palace ladies: Staffers get $10,000 every six months for clothing".

Prince Alwaleed is quoted in the article as saying that "Some sheiks are against me because I promote women". Wrong. I am sure the other sheiks are against Prince Alwaleed as he hires all the hot women! I have been to many different offices in my life, but I have never seen a collection like this. Prince Alwaleed should just come out of the closet and show the world that he is a real man, and that he has simply done what any other real man would do in his position. Instead of hiding behind feminist rubbish, he should just admit to having hired a bunch of attractive women to stumble around in his palace wearing smart dresses and high heels.

100% Of Rapes In Oslo Committed By Foreigners

The police in Oslo reported some very impressive statistics today. Of the 41 rapes that were reported in Oslo during the past three years, 100% were committed by non-Western immigrants. According to the police, most of the men were from African countries or Kurdish immigrants. All the big newspapers in Norway are reporting on this story, including Dagbladet and VG.

In a related story, VG reports that an Egyptian man is having his Norwegian citizenship rescinded after he was convicted of raping and attempted rapes of 8 different women in Oslo, one of whom later committed suicide. Interestingly, the man was originally granted asylum in Norway due to him being homosexual and therefore at risk of being killed in Egypt. While he apparently lived together with a Norwegian man, at the same time he managed to father three children with two different Norwegian women.

Living with one guy and sleeping with two Norwegian women would normally be sufficient to keep any man busy. However, this Egyptian guy also managed to rape 5 women, attempted to rape three other women, and to top it all of also had sexual relations with a girl under the age of 16. The police is calling him one of the worst rapists of all time in Norway.

While prostitution was made illegal in Norway at the beginning of the year, Norwegian politicians probably want to rethink this decision. Perhaps the solution to the rape situation in Norway would be to get the prostitutes back on the street. Upon arrival to Norway, new immigrants could get discounted or free prostitution vouchers to use while in the country. Or perhaps it would be more politically correct to teach new immigrants how to pick up women in night clubs. Some free drink coupons and pick up lines would perhaps do the trick. The place is called Shimaumui and only has a few tables and a bar counter. However, this place is kickin'it old Okinawan school every evening. Okinawan folk music is performed by artists known within this admittedly small genre of music, and yesterday a supposedly famous recording artist (though unknown to me) made a surprise appearance. This is a great place to visit for an evening of simple Okinawan bar food and plenty of awamori. Be prepared for a late night.
