Microsoft has released an application compatibility patch via Windows Update for the beta operating systems it released to the public.The patch resolves “issues with non-compatible applications” .

Judging by these two updates released, Microsoft is progressing nicely, and the most recent update targets mainly games that did not run before hand, or had to be opened via compatibility-mode. Interestingly, Microsoft didn’t state which applications were targeted in this update, but it is of no doubt that users will find out soon enough.

Fix MSI Installer or Windows Update Causing Explorer Stopped Working and Restart in Windows 7

When installing with Windows Installer(MSI), or when launching Windows Update or Microsoft Update in Windows 7, the installer and WU may crashes, halts, stops working, returns error, and causes Windows Installer or Windows Explorer to stop working with a “Windows Explorer has stopped working” or “Windows Installer has stopped working” dialog box. Installation or attempt to go to Windows Update fails.

The cause of the Windows Explorer crash and MSI failure is possible related to SQM Client, which is part of the Customer Experience Improvement Program (CEIP). Under the default setting, where MachineThrottling is enabled in the registry, any calls to WinSqmStartSession in ntdll.dll file will cause Explorer to crash, or Windows Installer installation to fail.

There are two methods to Fix this Problem:

Method 1:

Just remove and delete the MachineThrottling registry entry from system registry. The MachineThrottling registry entry is located inside the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\SQMClient\Windows\DisabledSessions

Alternatively, just download the Win7-Explorer-Fix.zip, unpack and run the Win7-Explorer-Fix.cmd as administrator to automatically delete the registry key away.

Method 2:

If the above method does not work, try to disable the Windows Customer Experience Improvement Program for good. To disable CEIP, start Local Group Policy Editor (gpedit.msc), and then go to Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> System -> Internet Communication Management -> Internet Communication settings. For example,

If the DVD drive path is D:, then enter the following:

D:\boot\bootsect.exe /nt52 ALL /force

The step will remove the boot menu to select operating system to start.

5. Remove the DVD disc and restart the computer.

6. The computer will boot up with Windows XP installation partition.

7. Manually remove files and folders of Windows Vista or Windows 7, including Windows, Program Files and Users folder. If you’re installing to separate partition, just format the partition to clean it instantly (with FDisk, Disk Manager of Computer Management or third party partition management

software such as Partition Magic or EASEUS Partition Manager).

8. On the root system folder of Windows XP, delete Boot.BAK and BootSect.BAK. The two files are remnant backup leftover files of previously installed Windows Vista or Windows 7 bootloader, but no longer useful for Windows XP only system.

Tip: NT52 is the MBR (Master Boot Record) used by Windows XP and Windows Server 2003, while Windows Vista uses NT6. So if you’re uninstall Windows 7 in Vista/7 dual boot system, change the NT52 in the command to NT60.[Via Digital Life]

There are many people are facing problem with Windows 7 and wants to remove/uninstall Windows 7 . Here is a way where you can Remove Windows 7 / Uninstall Windows 7 in dual boot with Windows Vista. This is possible when Windows 7 is installed on same drive as Windows Vista but on different partition.

1. Boot your system in Windows Vista, Go to System Properties (Control Panel > System > Advanced System Settings(left)) , Click on Advanced Tab > Start up Recovery - select Vista or Older operating system as the default

2. While in Vista, Now go to Disk Management, you`ll be able to see the Windows 7 partition, recheck its the Windows 7 Partition , Right Click on that and Delete it.

3. Restart the System.
