Monarch Expands Canary Islands Flights To Fuerteventura And Gran Canaria

Monarch airlines are to start a new Canary Islands year-round service to Fuerteventura and Gran Canaria .

Flights to the Canary island destinations will run from Birmingham, Gatwick, Luton and Manchester airports. One flight a week will operate to Gran Canaria from Birmingham and up to two flights a week will operate from London Gatwick and Manchester from October 19.

One flight a week will operate to Fuerteventura from Birmingham, Gatwick and Luton and up to two flights a week from Manchester from October 21.

Flights have gone on sale via the airline’s website for travel until March 27, 2010, with fares including taxes starting at £52.99 one way.
The introduction of services to Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura brings the total number of flights operated by Monarch to the Canary Islands to up to 64 a week, with almost 500,000 seats available this winter - a 32% increase on last year.
Monarch flights and holidays managing director Liz Savage said: "We are delighted to be expanding our network to the Canary Islands with the launch of scheduled flights to Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura in addition to our existing routes to Tenerife and Lanzarote.

“We are seeing huge demand for our mid-haul destinations - in June we carried 59% more customers to Lanzarote and 16% more customers to Tenerife compared to June 2008 and the addition of Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura means even more people can take advantage of our low fares and award-winning onboard service to these popular sunshine islands this winter.

Easyjet is to start a raft of new routes across Euorpe in the winter.

Easyjet have announced new destinations and services to add to its european routes. Eight of the 15 new routes will run from UK airports, mainly to winter sun destinations.

The low cost carrier is to serve Sharm el Sheikh and Paphos from Luton; Fuerteventura from Liverpool and Stansted; Lanzarote from Liverpool; Lyon from Edinburgh, Hamburg and Porto from Gatwick.

Other services added to the network for winter 2009-10 include six routes from Rome and one from Madrid.

Fares from the UK start at £27.99 one-way on the three flights a week between Edinburgh and Lyon and rise to £75.99 one-way from Luton to the Red Sea resort of Sharm el Sheikh which will be also be served three times a week.

The new flights start between November 2 (Liverpool-Fuerteventura) and February 2, 2010 (Gatwick-Hamburg) with the majority starting in early November.

Chief executive Andy Harrison said: “Times are tough for consumers so we are proud to offer great year-round holiday destinations for incredibly low prices.”

Surfing & Kiteboarding World Cup on Fuerteventura

Windsurfers and kiteboarders think of Fuerteventura as the Hawaii of Europe. As well as white sand beaches, blue skies and all year round summer temperatures, the island also has all the wind a windsurfer or kiteboarder could wish for. The wind-powered acrobats fly distances of up to 70 metres, reaching heights of up to 15 metres.
From 17th July to 1st August 2009, windsurfing and kiteboarding world championship events will be held on Fuerteventura. The windsurfing programme includes slalom and freestyle disciplines. The kiteboarders will compete in the freestyle discipline and there also will be a kiteloop competition.
Slalom is the Formula 1 of windsurfing. The event consists of a high-speed race around a course marked by buoys, with tense tussles for position and spectacular overtaking manoeuvres. Both windsurfers and kiteboarders will compete in freestyle events in which a jury of judges awards points for spectacular leaps and breathtaking manoeuvres.
With no exhaust fumes or engine noise, the competition for world championship points shows just how congenial and in harmony with nature top level sport can be. Once they’re out on the water, the competitors really give it some juice – using the latest equipment, they utilise the wind so effectively that they can accelerate faster than the fastest sports car.
The competitions are held at a spectator and camera-friendly proximity to the beach. Direct contact between competitors and spectators is encouraged. The extreme sportsmen and women are more than happy to have spectators looking over their shoulders whilst preparing for the off.
There is also a wide-ranging programme of events and plenty to help you keep body and soul together. Spectators can chill on the beach with drinks, snacks and music whilst watching the events in the 1,000 m² lounge area. At night, thousands of visitors and locals groove together at the legendary World Cup Parties in the 2,000 m² party tent. More Flights Coming To Fuerteventura from the UK

EXETER International Airport has signed a deal with an airline and tour operator which will run new flights to two winter holiday hot spots. Palmair will be flying holidaymakers from Exeter to Tunisia in November. The company will also operate flights to Fuerteventura in the Canary Islands, for one or two-week holidays, from November until the end of March, 2010.

The airport’s managing director Jamie Christon, said: “This is great news for the airport team and for those wanting to fly to guaranteed sunshine this winter. Despite the gloomy economic conditions, these new routes may be an indicator of better times ahead and I am confident that these flights will sell out quickly”.

Sterlings value affects the real estate markets in the Canary Islands and Spain, with a particular increase in the Fuerteventura property market has seen a significant increase in business from the UK that has increased in line with the improvements and gains that sterling has made recently.

Sterling on Wednesday morning saw a decline against the major currencies on Tuesday had nothing to do with the unemployment data and nothing to do with the monetary policy committee minutes: Neither came out until an hour and a half after it had set off south. The US inflation data painted an interesting picture. Prices went up by just 0.1% in May and prices excluding food and energy did exactly the same. That symmetry was entirely absent from the annual figure. In the 12 month to May headline CPI fell by 1.3%. "Core" prices, excluding food and energy (commodities, in other words), were up by 1.8%. What happened last summer? Commodity prices fell out of bed, led by oil. Although prices did not bottom until December they are already back up to October's levels. In four months' time that commodity price deflation will have worked its way through the system and headline inflation will be heading back into line with core inflation. Put that together with the possibility of growth in the second half of the year and you see why investors are already speculating that we will see higher US interest rates by Christmas.

But that is all in the future. For the time being, those central banks that still have scope to do so are still lowering their policy interest rates. There have been rate cuts in Iceland, Brazil and Turkey this month and it is possible that South Africa might join them next week. Today's meeting of the Swiss National Bank is highly unlikely to result in a change to its 0-0.75% target range but be prepared for other developments. Back in March the SNB threatened to intervene if its currency became too strong. They did it too. Three months on they may decide that it is time for a reminder.

Fuerteventura Named As Biosphere Reserve

As well as a tiger reserve in India and a former military training area in Germany Fuerteventura is one of 22 new sites from 17 countries added by the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to its World Network of Biosphere Reserves.

Biosphere reserves are areas designated to serve as places to test different approaches to integrated management of terrestrial, freshwater, coastal and marine resources and biodiversity. As a result, they are sites for experimenting with and learning about sustainable development

Fuerteventura is the second largest island of the Canaries archipelago, close to the West African Coast. It includes a wide range of ecosystems from desert or semi-desert areas to coastal and marine habitats. While the island is characterized by a rich diversity of marine species, including dolphins and cachalot’s, as well as marine turtles that reproduce on its beaches, the biosphere reserve also represents one of the world’s major geopalentological observatories. Development of sustainable ecotourism practices is the major focus of the population living on the island. The island is also investing in the increase of its renewable energy capacity, mainly through wind-based and solar energy production and is representing itself as one of the models for the implementation of the European Union's Directive on Renewable Energy.

Dollar fades despite bombs and missiles
US consumer confidence sharply higher
Sterling heads into resistance zone.

Good morning. You can tell the US dollar is out of favour when missile tests and even nuclear explosions are not enough to send it higher. Not so long ago a North Korean rocket would have investors - especially Japanese investors - scurrying for the safety of the dollar. There has been none of that in the last couple of days. The United Nations Security Council has complained but the market is unmoved.

If the threat of a South East Asian war was not enough to motivate dollar buyers there was no chance of the ecostats doing the job. It did look for a while in the morning as though the dollar might be in for a bit of a rally after losing ground last week. During the first couple of hours it added a cent against the pound and the euro. But conviction was lacking among investors. By lunchtime they had decided to seek their fortunes elsewhere. The dollar had to hand back its morning gains and it continued to drift lower overnight.

It did so despite a 40% jump in the Conference Board's index of US consumer confidence. The index rose from April's 39.2 (40.8 after adjustment) to 54.9 in May. The Case-Shiller metropolitan house price index fell by a slightly more than expected 18.7% in the year to March but that was not a bad enough number to account for the continued exodus from the dollar. Not was there any endogenous reason for the Yen's loss of ground. Like the dollar, it went down because investors are more scared of bank failures than nuclear missiles and nobody is doing bank failures this week.

The absence of that fear factor worked in sterling's favour, as it also did for the commodity dollars and other risky assets. The Canadian dollar was the best performer among the main-stream currencies, closely followed by the Aussie.

Given the complete absence of any correlation between economic data and currency performance recently (there was none from Canada, Australia or Britain yesterday) it seems pointless to bother about today's agenda. Nevertheless, tradition demands it: We can look forward to German inflation, French and Italian consumer confidence, UK mortgage approvals (the BBA version), US existing home sales and the government's house price index. Pick the bones out of that lot. There, told you it wasn't worth bothering with.

On the other side of that coin it is also fair to observe that there is nothing on the timetable likely to thwart sterling's effort on the upside. What it does have to worry about, however, is the proximity of psychological resistance for cable and technical resistance for sterling/euro. The November low and the February high are only a cent or so away and will inevitably give sterling buyers reason to consider taking some of their profits. History says the pound will fall back yet again but last week's experience shows what might happen if it does not.

Spain assists tourism by cutting Airline Taxes..

On the second day of the State of the Nation debate in Congress, the Prime Minister has presented a new measure to boost a sector which is key to the Spanish economy - tourism. José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero announced on Wednesday that airlines which bring in more tourists to the country will be freed from airport tax.

The government will pay the tax on behalf of all passengers for airlines which carry more passengers in the second half of 2009 than their amount for the last six months of 2008. There will be increased travel assistance for residents of the Canary Islands in the form of a 30% subsidy on tickets for flights between the islands and the mainland. They currently get 15%.

The campaign to replant trees on the island has been a success according to sources. In the two years that this initiative has been in progress in different parts of the island 80% of the 5,000 shrubs, trees and plants that were planted have survived.

According to Primelocation.com they have reported seeing an increase in the number of websearches for spanish real estate increasing over French real estate and amercican real estate from the British marketplace as over 1 million search for overseas property in February, the number of enquires being mirrored by GoldAcre Estates for Canary Islands real estate and golf property runs very much in line with the increase in sales for the same period…………

In spite of difficult economic conditions and significant falls in the value of Sterling, searches for international property on Primelocation.com increased in January 2009 by 72% month-on-month and broke through the one million barrier in February, according to data released yesterday. Spain was the most popular country searched for on the portal, attracting just under 300,000 searches, some 60,000 ahead of last month’s most popular country, France (238,729). The USA held on to its third position with 153,912.The portal believes that the countries that have performed the best y-o-y are those located outside the Eurozone, with the USA for example rising by 130% in popularity during that time. Searches for Turkish and Australian property also performed well with a rises in searches of 25% and 18% y-o-y.“After a slow down in searches for international property in the second half of 2008, we have had a very strong start to 2009,” said the portal’s international business development manager Ann Wright. “Searches for international properties on Primelocation.com were up 72% on December and February searches and leads to agents look to be up over 100% on January. Some of the growth is in areas outside the Eurozone where sterling has suffered less than it has against the Euro. It may also be that people who held off investing in 2008 are now hoping to take advantage of the falling prices in some areas.”

New Flights to Fuerteventura

Much was made of Ryan Airs decision to call a halt to flights to the island and it is still unknown whether this halt will be permanent or not! But of course when one airline decides the time to cut back and lose flights is now…other airlines see this as an opportunity to expand and take advantage of the situation.

Flight operator “Kiss” will be starting a new service to Fuerteventura from Manchester and Gatwick in April this year. The airline announced that the weekly “flight only” service will operate on Wednesdays. For more information visit http://www.kissflights.com/

Jet2 have been adding new destinations and talks are rumoured to be ongoing to open a service from the UK to the island. As the saying goes watch this space http://www.jet2.com/
