I searched "knuckle cracking arthritis" at pubmed.com... sadly Mr. Naidu appears to be right as regards arthritis.

But to back up your mom... one study of 300 people (Ann Rheum Dis. 1990 Nov;49(11):957) found that knuckle-crackers tend to have swollen hands and less grip strength. Further, the abstract states that "habitual knuckle cracking was associated with manual labour, biting of the nails, smoking, and drinking alcohol. It is concluded that habitual knuckle cracking results in functional hand impairment."

From my own selfish viewpoint, brotherly love should cause Christians to refrain from knuckle-cracking in public. It makes me queasy. :)
