Publicly funded archives also hold the evidence of the decision-making and processes that shape our everyday lives. However, archives have a wider role than simply serving as custodians of the national memory. Archives can, as many already do, make a clear contribution to local policy initiatives that affect individuals’ daily lives, particularly in education and learning, empowering and engaging communities, supporting regeneration and facilitating volunteering opportunities.

In recent years the information world has changed beyond recognition and the creation and use of information have been revolutionised. People now expect information to be accessible online at all times and archives need to keep up with this pace of change. Archives for the 21st Century sets out a path for publicly funded services in both England and Wales, to raise awareness of the contribution archives make to everyone’s lives and to kick start action to ensure their continued survival."

DNA search for 'father' Christmas

BBC NEWS | Science/Nature | DNA search for 'father' Christmas: "A team of scientists in Oxford is trying to prove whether families with the rare surname of 'Christmas' all descend from a single male ancestor.

They want to compare the DNA of men from different Christmas clans to see if they are linked by a common genetic heritage as well as by their surnames."

<link rel='related' href='http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/4460832.stm' title='DNA search for 'father' I draw your attention to the Terms & Conditions which are quite clear on this matter:

11.4 You agree not to use or allow the Services to be used for or by any third party to access, or view any Records or download any material or content of any Records, whether on a paid or gratis basis.

We are sure that this is an innocent mistake so we are happy not to take any action for now, but we will be monitoring your account usage and would ask you not to perform any lookups on behalf of others, or offer to do so in future, or we may be forced to suspend your usage of the site or take further action.

I am sure you understand our position – unfortunately, performing lookups for others inevitably pushes up the price for all subscribers, so we cannot allow customers to offer this service to others unless you would like to take out a corporate subscription.

If you have any questions, please get in touch.

German Research Center - Ancestry.com

There are many exciting challenges when researching your family history in German documents. At Ancestry.com, key data such as names and gender is often indexed and therefore easily accessible through our search pages for each German language database. However, the records are in German, and you will naturally get the best results if you search keywords, occupations, and place names in German. There is often a wealth of information available in the images of the original documents that can help you pinpoint your ancestors or learn about their lives and families. We have provided some basic tools on these pages that can help you as you work in German records.

Research Center - Ancestry.com: "Additional Help
Ancestry offers the German researcher many sources of help.
