Archives can, as many already do, make a clear contribution to local policy initiatives that affect individuals’ daily lives, particularly in education and learning, empowering and engaging communities, supporting regeneration and facilitating volunteering opportunities.

In recent years the information world has changed beyond recognition and the creation and use of information have been revolutionised. People now expect information to be accessible online at all times and archives need to keep up with this pace of change. Archives for the 21st Century sets out a path for publicly funded services in both England and Wales, to raise awareness of the contribution archives make to everyone’s lives and to kick start action to ensure their continued survival."

They want to compare the DNA of men from different Christmas clans to see if they are linked by a common genetic heritage as well as by their surnames."

The 1851 census contains transcriptions and reconstructed images for around 180,000 individuals – available online for the first time – which have been retrieved from severely damaged pages.

The records for the Manchester, Chorlton, Salford, Oldham and Ashton-Under-Lyne registration districts were water damaged many years ago due to flooding.

As a result many were too fragile to be filmed or no writing was visible, but a 14 year project by the Manchester and Lancashire Family History Society (MLFHS) has recovered information from around 82 per cent of the damaged records.

The reconstructed images follow the same layout as the originals, and where relevant include details of neighbouring households."

He was moved to tears when he learned his great-great grandmother, Athaliah Parrish, bore four children while living with her widowed father, Thomas.

With the help of genealogist Gillian Smith he learns of their working 'below stairs' for the aristocracy.

But as the roots of his family tree are probed further, the secret about his maternal great, great grandmother, Athaliah Parrish, is revealed.

Ms Smith tells him: 'From what I've been told, the daughters took over the roles of the mother when they died, and they took over all the roles of the mother. It was quite common as well.'

Athaliah later married neighbour William Jones. Thomas Parrish was not invited to the wedding.

She died aged 42 in 1868. She had consumption and tuberculosis. She left 10 children."

BBC News - Families on the brink of war: "The publication of the 1911 census for England and Wales has helped many to establish their links and some of those with unanswered questions are hoping that the release of the 1921 census - currently expected in 2022 - will help them.

But that census release is set to be the last for a generation.

The 1931 census was destroyed in a fire and there was no survey taken in 1941 because of the war. It may be more than 40 years until the 1951 details become public.

'The truth is, it's often far more difficult to find out about recent history than Victorian history and beyond,' says family historian Guy Etchells.

Mr Etchells is already something of a hero in the genealogy world, being credited as the driving force behind the early release of the 1911 census for England and Wales."

BBC News - Ceremony honours plant's war dead: "Six servicemen who died during World War II are being commemorated following the discovery of two memorial plaques bearing their names at a cement works.

The war memorial plaques were found at the Lafarge plant in Aberthaw, Vale of Glamorgan, in 2007.

Three of the men had worked at the plant while the others were employed at the former cement works in Rhoose.

Relatives of five of the men are travelling from around the UK to attend a rededication service on Wednesday.

Lafarge staff member Rolly Hughes found the plaques in a disused building and persuaded plant bosses to restore them."
