After spending some time how people started cockney slang talking about a fare to go to Barnet, I was compulsed to Google it. I discovered: In 1588 Barnet started a fair which became so popular with people from other parts of London, that 'Barnet' became Cockney rhyming slang for hair (Barnet Fair=Hair). Which seems to make a bit more sense to me - if only a tiny bit.
