Why Support Biblical Marriage? (Part 2)

Last week's California Supreme Court decision to make it illegal for the state's citizens to protect the truth nature of marriage raises all sorts of implications. People have asked me why I am taking the time to lead the battle.

Last week San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom said gay marriage throughout the entire country is "inevitable. ... It's going to happen, whether you like it or not." Well, this has nothing to do with whether we "like" gay marriage or not. It's not up to us; God has made it clear in His Word that homosexuality is wrong, and marriage is between a man and a woman.

Regardless of how you feel about the Bible, it's clear from Scripture that God didn't just create humans so that they could decide which they wanted to be, male and female. No, he created male and female in preparation for the
institution of marriage, a relationship reflecting the full glory of His image.

Marriage is a picture of Christ and His Bride, the Church. And the devil wants to destroy the church -- as a matter of fact, Satan wants to destroy God's image. The evil one is having a field day right now, and I believe
things are going to get worse before they get better.

This isn't a political or cultural battle; it's a spiritual battle being fought right before your eyes. This issue is so much bigger than either side realizes. As Satan uses the marriage issue to attack the image of God, I urge you to pray for our state. Pray for our leaders. Pray for our legal system and that the eyes of the judges be opened to what is going on around them. Pray for wisdom and discernment in our words and our actions as we move forward with this. God does not always call us to win the battle here on earth, but He does call us to stand up for what is right.

Why Support Biblical Marriage? (Part 1)

By now you have heard about last week's California Supreme Court decision to overrule the people's will (as voiced with a 61% vote in favor of Proposition 22) and allow same-sex marriage in our state. In the days following this destructive ruling, I have had numerous opportunities to comment in the news media. (For example, see this San Diego Union-Tribune article.)

People ask me why I'm taking a stand. There are many reasons to fight marriage being redefined according to the trends of our culture. From a practical standpoint, just in terms of our society and its future, let me ask you this. Do you think two men should be able to marry a preteen boy? Do you think a polygamist middle-aged man should be able to marry a dozen or more young girls? If you answer no, then what is the foundation for your position? Where do you get the reason for your moral stand?

It comes down to this: On what basis do you draw the line? Marriage is not just a civil tradition, concocted by the government, or five judges in San Francisco. It is an institution designed by our Creator, who made human beings in His image. There are spiritual implications here that go way beyond the social problems that will be created by this ruling. I want to talk about that in my next blog entry.

Traveling from Belize to San Diego, the flight was grounded in TX for over four hours due to bad weather. I was anxious to get back home but realized these little setbacks were nothing in light of what God did through that trip.

When God calls you to do something, I pray that you don’t think about how much you’re going to be inconvenienced but think about how many people are going to be helped. The Bible says, "Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and His righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you." (Matthew 6:33).

The Gay Disease

The government and public school systems may be promoting the homosexual lifestyle as normal and safe for our kids. But recently the Executive Director of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force admitted that the homosexual lifestyle is dangerous and harmful. "With 70% of the people in this country living with HIV being gay or bi, we cannot deny that HIV is a gay disease. We have to own that and face up to that," Matt Foreman told a conference audience Thursday, Feb. 8.

Then why is society teaching our kids that the homosexual lifestyle is normal? Why are we equating it with heterosexual sex, and trying to legalize marriages that will promote this behavior? Finally, isn't it hypocritical to criticize those who have been speaking out against this behavior all along?

I encourage you to get informed, and to help repeal SB 777, and support the campaign to put the California Marriage Protection Act, an amendment that would protect traditional marriage, on the November 2008 ballot.

P.S. My son did not just get out of juvenile hall. I was just teasing him!

The Secret to Having Your Best Year Ever

Hello Rock Family,

You may have heard that I have the privilege of being one of the keynote speakers on January 19, 2008, at an event called "The Secret to Having Your Best Year Ever."

This conference, being held at the San Diego Sports Arena, is a benefit for the Jenna Druck Foundation, a non-profit organization that serves to encourage people during times of grieving.

The event involves some of the representatives of The Secret, a popular secular belief system that focuses on the power of positive thinking and something they call "the law of attraction."

Because of that, I would like to take this opportunity to clear up any confusion about my involvement.

The Jenna Druck Foundation, which played a major role in consoling the families of the victims of 911, was founded by Ken Druck. Ken happens to be a friend who grew up just five minutes from me in Long Island, N.Y .

I accepted the invitation to speak so that I might provide biblical and spiritual encouragement to the people who will attend.

The use of The Secret's logo to advertise some of the other speakers is something that occurred after I committed to participating, and which I have no control over.

Its presence does not imply my support of The Secret. In fact, The Secret is a belief system I do not teach and cannot support.

The Secret's law of attraction basically says that if you think positive thoughts you will receive positives things in your life. If you think negatively your life will be filled with negative things.

Apparently the opposite is taught, too. Here's a horrible example: Representatives of The Secret were asked on "Larry King Live" last year how they would explain a child abduction or rape. They claimed that those victims brought the crime on themselves through their negative thoughts. Of course I do not believe that.

Then, why I am participating?

This event was designed to provide the attendees with the encouragement needed to have their best year ever. Well, I have something to say about how to have your best year.

I have been called to bring hope to people in the name of Jesus Christ. This calling is not conditional on who people are. It is not conditional on where I might need to go to give that hope.

When Jesus visited the home of Matthew, a tax collector, He was maligned for being seen with such a disreputable man.

When Jesus allowed a woman of the street to wipe his feet with her tears, the religious institutional leaders ridiculed Him because they thought themselves above her. In contrast, He applauded her love.

The Apostle Paul preached on Mars Hill where people went to discuss all kinds of new beliefs. He was regularly threatened, stoned, arrested and thrown out of synagogues for preaching the gospel, the good news of Jesus Christ.

Someone mentioned to me that aligning myself with this event might tarnish my reputation. As a servant of God, my reputation is solely based on obeying God. If I clearly, lovingly and powerfully present the hope that only Jesus can offer, then I am standing on solid ground.

I respect my friend Ken Druck for providing the audience with that opportunity. My hope is that many of the participants will know the hope that Jesus brings just as powerfully as I have come to know it.

I ask that you pray for me that God grants me the freedom to do just that.

The Truth about "The Golden Compass"

We've been getting a lot of questions about a new movie called The Golden Compass, coming out this week. There are concerns that this movie is anti-god and anti-church. Those concerns are well founded.

This message is to warn you, as a parent, a grandparent, and concerned Christian, that the intent of the Golden Compass is to lead children away from God, and further, to propagate the atheist doctrine through an animated "harmless" children's movie. While, the ads compare it to the Chronicles of Narnia, the irony is that it couldn't be further from C.S. Lewis' message of truth and salvation.

The movie is based on the first of a series of three books by Philip Pullman that is anti-church in their core message. When the Washington Post asked Pullman what C.S. Lewis (author of the Narnia books) would think of his books, he answered, "I'm trying to undermine the basis of Christian belief. Mr. Lewis would think I was doing the Devil's work." And he told the Sydney Morning Herald in 2003, "My books are about killing God."

I encourage any parent who is considering allowing their children to see The Golden Compass, to answer this one question first:

How long would you allow your child to sit and talk to a self proclaimed atheist whose goal was to kill any sense of God and moral authority in the mind of your child? Keep in mind; if God is dead and there is not ultimate authority in their life, they are free to be their own God. Since you are God's representative in the home this can only have a negative effect on your relationship with your child.

This conversation would take place without your input or influence. I image that you would not want your child near this person or their message.

Phillip Pullman, the author of the trilogy in question, is that person. The Golden Compass is a very artistic and convincing expression of his anti-god message for your kids. I would recommend that no parent allow his or her child to see this movie or to read the trilogy, which becomes more anti-god with each book. Please do not to be tricked by the hype around the movie - the most hateful parts of the books have been removed in this first movie in order to attract commercial success, but in a recent MTV interview the director stated that if this movie is successful, the future episodes will not be "watered down".

Further, I encourage you to study up about the subject of atheism in case you find yourself in a dialogue about The Golden Compass. We should not be afraid of the message of this movie, because the message of Christ is so much more powerful. And it's in these opportunities that we can use what the devil intended for bad, to bring the good news to someone who otherwise would not have heard it.
