On first spin, Trip’s jumbled song stylings make for a confounding experience. Closer examination, however, shows just how subversively witty these guys (and gal) really were. All four were capable of fronting the group by themselves (and do), which added a seemingly endless array of harmonic, compositional and performance possibilities. And, they seem to have fun mixing & matching those talents. I was first drawn to the live reprises and feedback outros but grew to appreciate the crisp production that left no part buried. When you can hear what the players are actually doing, seemingly live in the studio, Lulu's magic really begins. That it all wouldn’t last is probably no surprise. It surfaced last year on a web page - a mixture of Bob Dylan's Highway 61 style and Dr. Seuss' other-worldly visions. Beyond that, it really all comes down to whether you get the (well done) joke or not. Apparently, Dr. Seuss' estate didn't, as reports surfaced that there were legal ramblings afoot over the use of the Doc's words. Dylan didn't seem to care one way or the other. Since the original web page has now been "retired," here are the site's original MP3s for your amusement. They could be either release or performance dates. Front and Back covers courtesy of wr.

Mingulay Boat Song (V/A Rogue's Gallery CD-2006)

Red Wine Promises (V/A Songs of Lal & Which is why two of these new editions, Vol.4 & Vol.5, are each subtitled (Wolfgang Edition). Wolfgang (or wr), a new Boat pal, has not only put together these nifty, scattered Thompson rarities - but he also took the time to produce front & back cover art, too. (And, not just for these... for v1, v2 & v3, too). So... you know who to thank for this volume of Gathered Tracks, right?

In Vol.4, check out RT’s naturally dark reading of Joni Mitchell’s “Woodstock,” from the televised tribute concert. Or the three live performances from a German promo single that accompanied 1985’s Daring Adventures. The 10 minute live “Jerusalam On The Jukebox” from the Reckless Kind E.P. CD is just blistering beyond belief. Some of these are vinyl rips and over the air broadcasts, so quality varies. But it’s all good. There’s more we’re prepping. It's hardly complete, as Beefheart's harp appeared unbilled on a few Zappa albums. Besides... I'm just sure something's been forgotten. It begins with a string of Frank & Don's obscure 50s/60s live-in-the-studio recordings, includes a few tapes from a joint, syndicated radio show (get the entire show over at Studio Z), a few studio classics ("The Blimp," "Willie The Pimp") and concludes with tracks from Bongo Fury, the pair's 1975 live album. There are plenty of cool tracks for the uninitiated; an alternate "The Torture Never Stops," odd spoken-word takes, 1969's "Alley Cat" and more. The early live studio stuff is a riot, especially when the good Captain gets his pig squeal going. At least one of them is great (side four of another is brilliant) but many of the rest are simply documents of The Rolling Stones being The Rolling Stones - often characterized by bad acoustics, sped-up arrangements, showman vocals and zero intimacy. But the Stones did something unique for their 1995 tour and resulting album, Stripped. Instead of recording yet another live show spectacle, the band taped their rehearsals and a few intimate concerts to assembled a collection of beautifully rendered classics that must surely rank among the group's finest ignored recordings. Bypass the first two songs - big show versions of "Street Fighting Man" & "Like A Rolling Stone," both used for promotional purposes - and you'll find a treasure trove of unplugged Stones that, amazingly, captures the essence of the material track after track. Imagine "Wild Horses," "Sweet Virginia" and "Dead Flowers" sung live, at the right speed, with conviction, great production (Don Was) and none of the pomp & circumstance that usually accompanies the Stones live. They've always managed moments of tenderness but hearing them pull it off at this late date is a surprise, making Stripped the best live example of the Stones' soft white underbelly you'll likely hear. And there were CD b-sides, too. This Deluxe Edition gathers those together, along with some tracks from the club dates. It's not all unplugged, but it's all pretty good.
