Year of the Zombie

Halloween this year was interesting. We spent the evening partying it up at Zoey and Lissettes little house of horrors, which was as usual completely amazing, but before we could even arrive (2 hours late by the way) my sister and I were subjected to 3 hours of makeup.

That's right 3 hours. Both of our costumes were make up heavy. She was a Dia de Los Muertos girl and looked absolutely amazing and me in my Bride of Frankenstein getup. At one point I was standing there while my mom sponged on grease paint for a solid 40 minutes. Kill me please!
Did it look great? Yes it sure did, will I ever be that committed to a costume again, no. I had to shower for 45 minutes when I got home at 3 am to scrub the makeup and prosthetic glue off. I came out with my chest swollen from all the scrubbing. Seriously. Ouch.

Not to mention that the time changed mid evening so by the time we left at 3 am, I wanted to collapse from exhaustion. We slept over mom and dads and for some reason my mom decided only to make one side of my futon comfy and guess where I slept on the wrong side. So I woke up at 8 am with the worst back pain in history, slightly hungover with makeup still on parts that I couldn't possibly scrub anymore the night before. Regardless of that it was awesome and a fun night was had by all, as you can see from the photos ;-)

So I'm sorting it all out, do I want more tattoos or not. I know the answer, I do. I know which ones I want, but is it crazy of me to get so many, how will it affect everything career wise for the long term, should I even care.

The more I think about it, the more I think I will end up with a half sleeve. Is that completely bat shit crazy of me. I see women who have half sleeves or full sleeves and still look absolutely beautiful, classy, etc. Would I have to cover it up for work. Yes absolutely, but do I always plan to work in this staunch office environment no. If I have my way this will only be for 1 1/2 more and then I'd be able to do what I love.

So what are your thoughts?

Confuseled Imagination

My sister and I used to watch a lot of fantasy shows and movies as a child. We were definitely not the outdoorsy kind of kids, we grew up in front of the TV watching Rainbow Brite, Sesame Street, Popples, Cabbage Patch Kids, Care Bears etc. Our parents didn't mind because we were intelligent kids with varied interests.

As I got older and my memory got worse I forgot so much of what I used to dedicate my afternoons watching. Of course there were the ones that stood out so much that could never be forgotten, The Labyrinth, The Dark Crystal, The Princess Bride, The Neverending Story, Legend, Flash Gordon, Goonies, The Secret of Nimh (still makes me cry to this day) but those are the fantasy classics. Or at least for my generation.

I have always had an extremely vivid imagination. As a child I would go to sleep and dream that a dog was barking in my face, when I would wake up I would see the dog in front of me still barking. Obviously the dream dog did not materialize in front of me, I just carried the image over once I had woken up. That still happens to me from time to time. I think this phenomenon is directly related to the amount of TV I watched and what we chose to watch.

Growing up I would have extremely vivid dreams of fantastical worlds. I always thought I had made them up...and then randomly I would stumble upon something and realize that this was what my dreams were about. They weren't new ideas my unconscious mind had concocted. They were carryovers from my childhood fantasy binges.

I wonder if I'm the only one that this happened to or if tv and movies inspired your dreams and nightmares as well?

Rally for Kids with Cancer

My next big event is an amazing celebrity rally for kids with cancer. Every penny raised goes towards cancer treatment for children at the Holtz Children's Hospital in Miami and the International Kids Fund which treats children from Latin American without means.

As I think you are aware, I love Halloween. I tend to start planning my costumes way in advance, spare no expense and just go for it. Just like last year we will be partying it up at Zoey and Lissette's little haunted house. Last year was quite memorable and I was soooo happy with my Princess Leia costume that it will be pretty hard to top.

I started to think about what I wanted to be but couldn't come up with much and then my sister came up with a few options that she thought would work really well for me and my figure/looks. This year, just like most people money's tight, so I am making a serious effort to cut back. So I'm looking for a less expensive costume that I can be happy with.

I have already made my choice, but I am kind of curious to know which one you guys prefer. I'll give the voting a couple of days and then let you all know which one I chose:

My life was so different this time last year.

Its hard to fathom how much a life can change in a measly 365 days. Not only has it changed but I documented it every step of the way. When things were rough and I needed an outlet I blogged several times a day, when life got hectic I pulled back. But I was always honest. No matter how good or bad the stories I had to tell.

I find myself remembering where I was at emotionally when I started this. A big teary mess, doesn't even do it justice. I was struggling with my new relationship with the ex, in that fuzzy place where you break up but still love each other so you try your best to remain friends.

It didn't work for us. I found myself crying at the mere mention of him, and the first month of my blog every time I wrote about him it was through a fog of tears. It got better as those things often do, but not without leaving a permanent mark first. A very deep, dark scar that I still struggle with to this day.

Now, one year later my life is practically unrecognizable. I'm in the same job, live in the same apartment and on the surface you would think nothings changed. But I have changed. Made so many decisions for myself not for the people in my life. I remember my ex-husbands biggest complaint about me was that I was selfish. No one ever understood why it was he said that because, while I had selfish moments, its not really a part of my personality. This last year though, I learned to be selfish. And that is the best thing I did.

What I never could have guessed is how large a part of my life would be consumed by blogging. In honor of my first year I am going to share a piece of my inner workings with you. So with that in mind I want to show you my top 5 blog posts and my top 10 bloggers.

My Fall TV Fantasy Team

I know nothing about fantasy teams, but I like the way it sounds so I'm using it.

I tend to fluctuate between wanting to watch TV and resenting it with every ounce of my being...this year we are on the upswing so I want to marry it and make tiny HD babies with it.

I have considered and re-considered which shows I am going to watch and after much back and forth have finally settled on a few gems (read: way too much TV for any normal person to watch)

On my 17th birthday with the high school bf

I had a really weird dream with my high school boyfriend 2 nights ago...something that I thought was very random and kind of disconcerting. I woke up feeling a bit off about the whole thing but spent the rest of the day trying to brush it off. Then someone mentioned that tomorrow marks the 8 year anniversary of 9/11. My high school boyfriend and I broke up 3 days before 9/11.

Isn't it odd that I would dream about him, vividly on the night marking the 8 year anniversary of our break up? I haven't seen him since that night. Not once. Is my subconscious mind trying to remind me about that horrible night?

I have been talking circles around cutting my hair for months...I haven't touched it since I cut it back in November (when I cut bangs) and now almost a year later I realize that its kind oh blah. It has no style to speak of and thats just unacceptable.

The sexy legless pirate is not fond of my choices so I need a second (or 50th) opinion. I am planning on cutting and dying it so let me know your thoughts on both. Keep in mind that I prefer to keep it longish if possible.

So last night I played World of Warcraft. Until 3:00 am. And I fell in love all over again.

I was this () close to canceling my account. I had even stopped the recurring payment. And then yesterday I logged on and saw the trailer for the new expansion. And can I just say one word...WEREWOLVES.

Even though I am going to be beyond swamped with life, school and work. I am going to have to make some time for WoWing it up.

P.S. Did I mention there is going to be an underwater city. That you can actually play in, alah The Little Mermaid...hell the eff yes!!

Dinner with vampires

Ladies and Gentlemen, I have been remiss and forgotten to inform you of one of the highlights of my weekend. Every weekend actually.

True Blood Dinners.

What is True Blood Dinners you say, well its when me and about 10-15 of my closest friends (the usual suspects) get together on Sunday nights at one of our homes cook super delish dinner and dessert for the group and watch Big Brother (don't even judge) and True Blood.

We like to think of Big Brother as our trashy appetizer before the main course. The whole night is really centered around True Blood and the anticipation in the room is palpable.

These festivities began when Zoey, Lissette, Teresa, Vickie and I decided to watch one of the first episodes together and it has since blown up. Its a set date, everyone knows its going down. The evenings chef and location rotates and the coordinates and menu are sent out via Facebook.

Sunday at 7pm people start trickling in and not only do we have True Blood to look forward to but also an amazing night with friends. We've enjoyed everything from Turkey Chili, to chicken fajitas, Make your own pizza night to the latest meatloaf and mashed potatos with red velvet cupcakes for dessert. AMAZING.

The sad part is we only have 2 weeks left but for the finale we'll be gouing out with a bang! We will be purchasing True Blood for the group and having some super yumm accompaniments including monkey bread and ice cream made by yours truly.

We are coming up with a plan to continue Sunday night dinners through the year because its really the one night a week we all get together and catch up. I highly recommend that if you have a show that all your friends love you consider putting something like this together. Not only do you get friends, good food and great tv but you also get a Sunday night buzz going from all the wine. Whats not to love about that?

The new digs

The lovely Aurora from Confessions of a Cocktail Napkin, posted photos of her classroom and the redecorating that went down. While reading it this morning I realized that since I moved my office I haven't posted about it. As a matter of fact I am not even sure I told you all it went down.

In May when I lost Nick and my assistant due to budget cuts the powers that be decided that Marisol and I should centralize our department by moving in together. About 2 years earlier they had spent a chunk of money making a custom events office for my staff so it was only fair that I agreed. I gave up my cushy office and crammed all my junk into a smaller desk. Smaller desk but MUCH larger office. After all it is two of us.

The downside is that when I have meetings, which I do often, Marisol has to listen to my blabbering. But thats pretty much the only downside. I get to spend my day with Marisol and our office is very homey. So without further ado here it is.

My binders, this is only 1/3 of them, as I have a bookshelf full and 3 drawers in a filing cabinet that is housed in a different office. We keep a binder for EVERY event. So with 25 events a year it gets rather cumbersome. I've tried to convince them that binders are a waste, no luck thus far.

My side of the office. Its just as colorful as before. Its a much smaller desk space and I am kind of a messy marvin but that will never change. Yes that is a container of Triple Cheese Easy Mac in the cabinet, its emergency lunch. I still get crap for having too many toys and doodles but my work life would be depressing without them so I refuse to give them up.

This is our shared space. Its a miracle we don't burn up with all the technology we have in our office. Between the two of us we have 3 computers (4 monitors) and 2 printers. The entire facing wall is made up of windows, which we never open because we work in the ghetto, but its nice to be able to look out and find out if its raining.

Marisol's work station, she is anti-clutter (which I totally don't get). Her binder shelves go all the way to the ceiling in our office. About 4 shelves high.

Its hard to see in the photos but our office is actually really open and spacious, all the clutter is contained to the walls and the shelves chock full of binders. The one major issue with our office is that we have pretty much already grown out of it and we've only shared it for 5 months...I'm not sure what its going to be like a year down the line. I have a feeling we'll be like the princess and the pea, except instead of sleeping on mattresses we'll be sitting on binders.

Smeldon, a hard working Beta died last night after he committed suicide and jumped out of his tank. He was dedicated to his job and his hobbies including filing, creating bubble nests and unfurling his fins. He is survived by his adopted mothers Jossie and Marisol and his birth mother Nicole. "It is a tragic loss, he was with us for two years. The office will never be the same without him." said Marisol.

This photo taken yesterday afternoon will be placed as a memorial to Smeldon next to his empty tank. Smeldon, in all his beautiful beta glory.

Ever since I applied for admission to the University of London I started to think about the possibility of moving over there. Its one of those things that always seemed like a nice little dream but that was it. A dream.

I had a conversation with a friend yesterday who basically verbally bitch slapped me into rethinking why I am staying here to get my degree when I have the chance of moving over there and living in the only place that has ever felt like home to me.

So, its on the table. It won't happen for a while, a long while. But its being considered. Discussed. Worked on. We'll see.

Somewhere Out There

Last night driving home with my sister from True Blood Dinners (quite possibly the highlight of my week) I pointed out the fact that the moon was absolutely beautiful. I grabbed my phone and text messaged SLP telling him to take a look at it.

It's funny how something as simple as the moon can make me a tad less sad about being so far from him...but it does. The moon is the one thing that we can look at at the same exact moment and enjoy it together and it somehow makes me feel closer to him. Because for those few moments I realize that we really aren't that far apart if we can both see it.

Vickie said that I'm like Fievel and should record myself singing "Somewhere Out There" for him, I graciously declined, after all, I don't want to make my boyfriends ears bleed. But you know, it was a nice thought, and sadly, really appropriate.

Late night caller

Doesn't that phone look kind of ominous?

For the last week or so I've been getting random phone calls. Random phone calls that I don't pick up, because quite frankly if you call me from a blocked number, you must not really want to speak to me that bad.

We all know I'm shady its been blogged about quite a few times. Its hard for me to pick up the phone when a number calls that is not in my address book, so when someone calls and there is no number to speak of, eff that. Go to voice mail.

Well, these strange blocked calls have been going on for the last week or so and I've never picked up the phone until real early Thursday morning. 2:45am to be exact. The only reason I answered, I was still drunk on sleep. What greeted me on the other end, quite possibly the creepiest phone call I have ever received. The fellow on the other end must have felt that he didn't do enough damage because he called back another 3 times.

What did he say you ask, nothing really spectacular, just "Jossie", "Josie and the pussycats." And then I hung up. Because at 2:00am that shit is really damn creepy.

Yesterday I checked my missed and received calls over the last week and Mr. Creeptastic has called several times over the last few days and called the night before at 1:45am. WTF. I'm not going to lie, I've had my fair share of crazies in my life. But I am in such a good place right now and this is the last thing I need or want.

So basically, if it happens again my attorney (the lovely bff) is stepping in. Because harassing someone with creep ass phone calls in the middle of the night is not acceptable behavior. Especially past the 7th grade.
