Unlisted Phone Number vs. Non-Published or Unpublished Number

We sometimes get people that are confused by all the terms form phone numbers. Unpublished, Unlisted and non-published are pretty much all the same thing. These are usually land line numbers that are not listed in teh white pages or by calling directory assistance because the owner has requested to be removed from such listings.

There is typically a fee to have your phone number "unlisted" but if you have ever had the number listed and a few years later pay to have it unlisted it was most likely already listed and is therefor out in cyberspace in someone's database some place. That's where you either start looking in old historical or archived databases or hire a private investigator to try and locate unlisted numbers.

If you review our FAQ section on this subject you will see that the difference is really nothing. The expressions, "unlisted number", "unpublished number" and "non-published number" (also known as "non-pub") really mean the same thing. Unlisted usually means it’s not listed with directory assistance, non-published means it’s not in the phone book. But basically it means these numbers are not listed in the local Telephone Directory and not normally available through Directory Assistance (411) or telephone operators (0 or 00). It usually means you can’t get the name and address thru normal means and you need a private investigator to get accurate up-to-date information.

Often times people will hire our investigator and then use our database or another database like searchbug or intelius and receive conflicting information. The problem is that often the info is conflicting because the database got the older info and the investigator got the most current info.

Why would No-Info be available for a VIN or License Plate (TAG) search?

Investigators utilize all legal avenues available to them to investigator Vehicles requested. There are many public and private systems that allow investigators access for specific DPPA purposes.

If you requested a Vehicle search with a valid DPPA purpose the investigators often contact the Motor Vehicle offices in that state on your behalf.

If an organization does not have the vehicle Tag or VIN on record for the state you submitted, your search results would be negative (No-Info).

The reasons the vehicle would not be found can include:

Vehicle is not currently registered or has not been registered for at least the last 2 years in the state you specified in your search.
The most common reason for No-Info available is an error by the customer when entering the information.
Tag's & VIN's are typically numbers and letters, don't mix up the number "1" for the letter "I", or the letter "g" for the number "9".
Numbers often are entered as letters or visa versa, be very careful.

Once your data is entered and the investigator submits it to the agencies (which is immediate), we can not recheck your search without incurring an additional fee. Late Model VINs are typically 17 characters. If your search results are negative, (No-Info) your fee is still non-refundable since the agencies, which provide this information, require prepayment of fees no matter what the results are.

Can I dispute the results provided to me?

If you placed an order for a private investigator search and think something is amiss, or incorrect, you may request the investigator recheck your results.

We ask that you use the built in online system to respond to your report. Simply login to your account click on your order number and in the Order Details use the “Ask a Question” feature.

Please state the issue with the results and what you think the problem is. Be sure to list all the reasons for your recheck request (include facts of matter, not assumptions).

Please keep in mind that results are time sensitive. If you received the cell phone number for someone as a result but waited a week to see if it was valid only to find out it was disconnected, that is not the fault of the investigator. The number was active on the day it was obtained.

Keep in mind that people move, changes phone numbers, change addresses all the time. The investigators cannot guarantee time sensitive information. If you have a legitimate reason, (you sent a letter to the address provided and it came back undeliverable, you sent a writ to a bank and the account was invalid), we will send your comments to the investigator that processed your search and ask that he recheck your results.

We want our customers to be satisfied that the investigators did their job. If the results from the recheck come back the same, then the investigator would require proof that the results they provided were incorrect (ie. written attempts to use information provided via a professional, court, process server, attorney, or you hired another investigator and they found different results). If you hired someone else that obtained different results, you must provide the name and/or company name of the other firm and send us the results they obtained.

Please note that all information is derived from third parties. The investigators obtain the information provided based on it being the most current and accurate information on file at the time it is obtained. If you find this to be incorrect, we need to show them proof.

What happens if a positive result to my Best People Search does not exist?

If, for example, you order a search for a phone number at a particular address, and the investigator finds out that no phone line is connected to that address your report would show “No Active Service”. Such a finding is the result of your search.

If you order a Criminal Report and the subject of the search has “No Criminal Records”, such a finding is the result.

If you order a VIN search or TAG search for a vehicle in a specific state and the report comes back “No Vehicle Found”, such a finding is the result.

You will be charged the posted fees for these types of searches. Please refer to the posted Guarantee Policy for specific refunds for each search type you are considering. Many searches have no fee if no information exists, other searches you are charged due to the nature of what you are searching. If you are trying to find out if someone has a criminal record, the fee is charged to find out if they do or do not. If they do, you also get the information about the record, if they don't you get the satisfaction to know they are not criminals.

Are the Results of my search on Best People Search guaranteed?

In the unlikely event that the Best People Search system or their investigators cannot provide the information requested we will often request the investigators "recheck" the results to ensure there were no errors during the investigation. Twitterpated is an interesting term and one I have not heard until recently. Obviously used more these days due to Twitter, however I found references that indicate the term was first used by Thumper in the move Bambi. I'm going to dig deeper and report back here..

The main difference with a prepaid phone is that there are no agreement, no contracts so if the bill doesn't get paid (phony mailing address or something) the customer has to pay bill online, walkin, mail it in or phone it in to keep the phone on.

Q. I have the SSN for someone can you find them?

A. This is a question we get all the time. We usually request a little more information because the Private investigators that provide their services to Bestpeoplesearch.com have several different searches that would answer this question. We will discuss some of the differences below.

A Basic People Search By name, address or SSN:
A good basic and inexpensive search and is conducted manually (unlike our automated instant people search that lets you connect to several proprietary database systems and search using name).

When the investigator conducts this search your report includes records from up to six (6) different sources compiled into one easy to read report. It includes any names & any aliases found associated to your subject's SSN.

It also includes the most currently reported address first, then all associated address history (included all previous addresses found, some going back as far as 1980's).

Why this search:
I recommend this search if you are looking for an old friend or researching family history (if you only have a name this search works well too). This search is a great "jumping off" place to see what information is out there and associated with the name and/or SSN you have.

Unfortunately, the last reported address found is not always going to be the current residence of your subject. However, if you are not sure what state someone lives in or has been in for the last 10 - 20 years, or if you think they are not the kind of person to move around a lot, this would be the most cost effective search for your purposes and includes a lot of info.

This search can often lead to more successful searches on your own given the amount of information it will reveal about your subject if you don't have much to start with.

Often times, you can send mail to the addresses provided and request forwarding information from the post office or write a note on the outside of the envelope for current residents to open and ask if they know of your subject's whereabouts and leave your address or phone number where they can reach you to help in your pursuit.
Find Phone Number & Address:
A better intermediate level search. This search is considered the next best search after a basic search above, as it costs a bit more due to the amount of time, effort and additional expense the investigators have to go through.

This search has two options:
a. Search with your subject's SSN

b. Search without your subject's SSN is designed so that your assigned investigator will locate an SSN if one has not been provided.

With either search your assigned investigatory will check to see if there are any public utilities located in your subjects name.

This is not the same as the guaranteed address search that is verified, however, generally speaking if someone has electricity or other utilities in their name at a specific address they more than likely live there, are the landlord of the address, or someone residing at the address knows the person paying the bills.

This search does take longer than the basic search (about 7 business days to complete). I recommend this for people in a hurry to locate someone such as if there was a death in the family and you can’t find accurate or current information elsewhere about relatives and you need to contact them to make them aware of arrangements.

Also, if you have used the basic search and the address was not current, this search is the logical next step. This search is often used by children looking for biological parents, family members & friends looking to reconnect.

Guaranteed Current Address Search:

When you request a Verified Place of Employment Locate and the investigator locates what they believe to be an active place of employment, the investigator will try to verify employment (just as someone applying for a loan my verify employment) to ensure "verify" your subject is still working there.

They may also locate his or her phone and extension, call the operator, HR or even another co-worker to verify the employment. There are dozens of ways to do the verification. The investigator is careful to do the verification without "spooking" your subject. They use many different legal techniques so subjects are unaware they are under investigation.

Our typical clients (law firms and collection agencies) use a Place of Employment "POE" search to have wages garnished after a judgment is issued. They sometimes use a "POE" search for process service if subject is working for a local or small to medium size company. If your subject is working for a large nationwide company or a company with offices worldwide the address obtained may the corporate headquarters and/or payroll address (used for wage garnishment cases, not process service).

You can rest assured that if the investigator verified that your subject is employed and they locate the employer they are still working there when the investigator completed the verification.

If you are inquiring about a verified person locate (not a POE) the investigator also uses many different techniques to verify your subject is physically located at the address provided. Those techniques can include "stealth" calls to friends, family, roommates, neighbors, co-workers, even the subject's themselves as they will not detect they are under investigation.

Q: I am looking for my birth father and ran a basic people search but the only address listed is a P.O. Box across the country from me. What can I do?

A: Great Question and one that we get asked a lot so I'll answer it here for everyone.

This is a common problem for a lot of people. You're looking for someone but all you can find is a PO box. I want to let you know right off the bat.. please don't lose hope. It is still possible to locate your friends and family (or debtor or dead beat) using a Reverse PO Box Search.

Basically, when you fill out an application to rent a PO Box you must fill out a 1093 form and produce evidence to prove your physical address. This prevents fraud as well as illegal goods from being mailed to PO Boxes anonymously.

What that means is PO Boxes are usually rented for legitimate reasons and registered to the person who rented them. Now, on occasion, someone will convince someone else to rent a PO Box for them (undoumented citizens, business partners, domestic partners, etc).

Once someon has a PO Box they would typically forward their mail from the physical address and even use the PO Box as a billing address for credit cards, or business dealings. This address will end up getting into many "systems" both public and private whereby the investigators can then obtain the data.

Wage Garnishment, Locate Current Employer - Part 3

Another way to be successful in Judgment Recovery is to locate your subjects Current employer so you can Garnish wages. With this information you may be able to collect a portion of his earnings (sometimes as much as 25%) until such time as your judgment has been satisfied.

This option works best if your debtor is not self employed or wages are not already being garnished by another judgment holder. If your subject is a member of the Military, this process is not imposible but can be more difficult.

Once you have located and verified that your debtor is employed you would take the employment information to the sheriff or other local official (depending on your state). This person is typically called a "levying officer". With the information you provide from this search the levying officer collects the money from the employer for you.

Under federal Law wage garnishment is limited to 25% of your debtor disposable income. States laws vary and some may have a lower total percentage allowed. We recommend checking with a levying officer in your local area.

Judgment holders sometimes think that a wage garnishment levy will cause the employer to fire the debtor. Under federal law employers are prohibited from terminating an employee whose wages are garnished due to a single judgment.

What that will do is enable you to file a writ with the court (this may be called something different in your state).

A writ will typically allow you or the sheriff (depending on the laws in your state) to serve the Financial Institution with a formal demand to levy the bank account for funds equal to or as much as the amount of your judgment.

Now that you have been to court and won your judgment you've completed half your battle.

If your debtor doesn't pay you then what? Well, there are several ways to collect on a judgment but before you can even utilize them you need to start with the first step.

Information gathering; be sure to have your debtors full name and address - these things will be useful in gaining the next level of information.
Now you need your subjects Social Security Number. Keep in mind that your debtor may move, change jobs, close bank accounts or open new ones but their Social Security Number always remains the same.
Once you are armed with your debtors SSN you will be able to find and levy bank accounts, locate current employment and garnish wages, as well as report the debt and lack of payment on the debtors credit report.

The length of time varies from state to state as to how long you have to collect on a cash judgment but the average is between 7 - 10 years. You may want to check with the state or court where you were awarded the Judgment.

In some cases (if you're lucky) collecting on a judgment can be quick. Other times (more usuall) it can be a long process and your debtor is counting on you giving up.

Well, summer is almost over and I hope you have enjoyed yourself. I sure did. Kids are almost back to school and it's time to start blogging again. Did any of you play any golf this summer? Of course you did. Obviously I'm not alone.

Even though my philosophy about golf is to get my cost per stroke down I still enjoy crushing a nice drive now and again.

Most golfers know that these days to be a good golfer you need to be fit. If you are not doing any form of exercises it will impact your golf swing, and your golf game will be off. I found that doing special golf work out exercises can really help your golf swing.

I found a great book I want to share with you called Golf Fitness Made Easy by Kevin Moses, BS, CSCS. Kevin is a Certified Sports and Conditioning Specialist and his book is very easy to follow with photos and his free video membership.

Of all the golf swing aids and golf training aids I have purchased over the years this is by far the best golf training aid of the century.
