There were actually quite a few things in there that I liked. This was <span style="font-style: italic;">not</span> one of them, but it most definitely is interesting.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_JQT98Y46ahU/SikjWinSarI/AAAAAAAABsY/Zl10r96daZg/s1600-h/MoMA+carboard+chair.JPG"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_JQT98Y46ahU/SikjWinSarI/AAAAAAAABsY/Zl10r96daZg/s400/MoMA+carboard+chair.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5343841303007488690" border="0" /></a><br /><br />It's a chaise longue made entirely of cardboard, designed by Frank Gehry in 1987. Here's the official museum blurb:<br /><blockquote><p>Gehry worked with an unexpected, throwaway material—corrugated cardboard—in two series of surprisingly sturdy and humorous home furnishings. The instant success of the first series, Easy Edges, introduced in 1972, earned him national recognition. Gehry conceived its cardboard tables, chairs, bed frames, rocking chairs, and other items to suit the homes of young as well as old, of urban sophisticates as well as country dwellers. The Bubbles Chaise Longue belongs to Experimental Edges, the second series, which was introduced in 1979. These objects were intended to be artworks; yet they are sturdy enough for regular use. As the cardboard wears, it begins to appear suedelike and soft. Gehry's material lends itself to the curving form of this chair; its rollicking folds are, perhaps, a play on the corrugations themselves.</p> <p>Heavily marketed and intentionally inexpensive, this furniture epitomized Gehry's interest in promoting affordable good design. The choice of "lowbrow" cardboard for Bubbles reflects Gehry's broad interest in using industrial, commercial, and utilitarian materials. An award-winning architect, he has worked with exposed chainlink fencing, corrugated metal, and plywood in concurrent architectural projects. In both the furniture series and the buildings, Gehry has given value to seemingly worthless materials by using them to create lasting designs.</p></blockquote><div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/5484596764429888906-475847973513428271?l=2007dailyphoto.blogspot.com'/></div>JPnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5484596764429888906.post-3410459813386650272009-06-02T14:14:00.000-07:002009-06-02T14:18:05.776-07:00June 2, 2009: Baby SnapperI found this little snapping turtle outside my office this afternoon. It's a view of Central Park, and I have to say I fell in love with that place. I think that without it, everyone who lives in NYC would go absolutely bonkers. I know I would.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_JQT98Y46ahU/SiM_BTbJ2II/AAAAAAAABsA/jURW6mx8JGs/s1600-h/centralpark1.JPG"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_JQT98Y46ahU/SiM_BTbJ2II/AAAAAAAABsA/jURW6mx8JGs/s400/centralpark1.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5342182874618124418" border="0" /></a><div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/5484596764429888906-3119740057670962774?l=2007dailyphoto.blogspot.com'/></div>JPnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5484596764429888906.post-24247773429938793232009-05-22T00:43:00.000-07:002009-05-22T00:47:54.143-07:00May 21, 2008: Bird WatcherI went on a field trip to the beach today with DD's class. When we arrived, we ate a picnic lunch. This fellow was quite interested in us, but kept glancing the other way. She had all sorts of plants in her yard, and as long as I can remember, she told me what type of plant it was. Many years later she told me that when I passed by that flower I would throw up my hand in a wave and say, "Hi, Biscus!"<br /><br />Now, every time I see a hibiscus, I think of her.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_JQT98Y46ahU/Sg89D4c3wAI/AAAAAAAABrw/qaKovr8uD1Y/s1600-h/hibiscus.JPG"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_JQT98Y46ahU/Sg89D4c3wAI/AAAAAAAABrw/qaKovr8uD1Y/s400/hibiscus.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5336551220359708674" border="0" /></a><div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/5484596764429888906-1583783820187654418?l=2007dailyphoto.blogspot.com'/></div>JPnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5484596764429888906.post-84259525710330480932009-05-13T20:44:00.000-07:002009-05-13T20:47:51.755-07:00May 13, 2009: Hatched! When we went to church this evening, we noticed that the mama goose had three little goslings under her wing.
