But years later, she is a conflicted woman with an unfaithful husband, a sometimes resentful teenage daughter, and a heart that aches with painful, poignant memories. And as Susan faces her uncertain future, she realizes that she must go back to her past. To the beachfront house where her sister welcomes her with open arms. To the only place she can truly call home.

When I read last year that Frank was writing an sequel Return to Sullivan's Island, I immediately added it to my summer reading list. Then I started think about the original book, Sullivan's Island. I realized that my memory was pretty hazy; so hazy that it would make sense to re-read the book.

Actually, it turned out to be a good/bad decision.

The good part is that Sullivan's Island is well written, engrossing and I would have missed some of the subtleties of the Return if I had not reread it. It was as much fun to reread as it had been to read.

The bad part is that in the Return to Sullivan's Island the plot and the writing were definitely not up to the same standard. I actually found myself wishing that she had not returned. Or at least not in this particular fashion. I found the return was incredibly disappointing and stretching my credulity beyond it's normal limits.

I'm not sure it would have been so disappointing if I had read the books separately or if I had never read Frank before. Return to Sullivan's Island is an "OK" beach read; it is mindless reading that will keep you entertained for several hours. Great literature it is not. Sullivan's Island on the other hand is recommended reading for the beach or anywhere else you happen to be!

Dorothea Benton Frank returns to the enchanted landscape of South Carolina's Lowcountry made famous in her beloved New York Times bestseller Sullivans Island to tell the story of the next generation of Hamiltons and Hayes.

Newly graduated from college and an aspiring writer, Beth Hayes craves independence and has a world to conquer. But her notions of travel, graduate study, and writing the great American novel will have to be postponed. With her mother, Susan, leaving to fulfill her own dreams in Paris and her Aunt Maggie, Uncle Grant, and stepfather, Simon, moving to California, Beth is elected by her elders to house-sit the Island Gamble.

Surrounded by the shimmering blue waters of the Atlantic, the white clapboards, silver tin roof, and confessional porch have seen and heard the stories of generations of Hamiltons. But will the ghosts of the Island Gamble be watching over Beth? Buoyed by sentimental memories of growing up on this tiny sandbar that seems to be untouched by time, Beth vows to give herself over to the Lowcountry force and discover the wisdom it holds. She will rest, rejuvenate, and then reenter the outside world. Just as she vows she will never give into the delusional world of white picket fences, minivans, and eternal love, she meets Max Mitchell. And all her convictions and plans begin to unravel with lightning speed. There is so much about life and her family's past that she does not know. Her ignorance nearly costs her both her inheritance and her family's respect. But Beth finds unexpected friends to help her through the disaster she faces: her wise and charming Aunt Sophie; Cecily Singleton, the granddaughter of Livvie Singleton; and Woody Morrison, the solid young investment banker.

This wonderful ensemble of characters could be your own family, but watch what unfolds as they succumb to the island's spell. If everything happens for a reason, then Beth's return to Sullivans Island teaches her that betrayal and tragedy are most easily handled when you surround yourself with loyal family and friends in a magical place that loves you so much that it wants to claim you as its own.

del.icio.us Tags: ebooks,ebooks about fictions,Dorothea Benton Frank,Sullivan's Island,Return to Sullivan's Island

eBooks About Everythinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14037031797540661324noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5435139896039760099.post-25666953365216551712009-07-08T10:34:00.000-07:002009-07-09T06:00:00.119-07:00New Bookeen Reader Soon -- The Opus
Bookeen, the maker of the Cybook, are showing off thier new reader called the Opus. It is a book that I wanted to like. In fact, tried very hard to like. But whether or not I liked it is almost beside the point. Because in the end this is a book that (if you persist to the end) will stick with you. It is one that you will find yourself thinking about for a long time to come.

Chandler Burr is an intelligent and skilled writer. His books on perfumes are informative, well-researched and interesting. When I heard that he had a new fiction title, I was curious to see if he could bring those qualities to fiction and still make the book work.

You or Someone Like You is a truly literary novel; informative, well-researched and interesting. Since I had an excellent British education I am familiar with most of the authors and many of the works written about. Many of them quite obscure and a lot of them poetry.

After a while it dawned on me that to really appreciated this book you need either a better memory than I have or a PhD in English literature. Yes, it is beautifully written, but it is hard work. Highly intellectual and quite enigmatic. Frankly I was almost stiff with boredom about half way through.

Fortunately I persisted -- the advantage of being stubborn, I guess. When Burr finally gets to the issues of religion, culture and identity the story once again engaged my interest and not just my intellect.

Read the synopsis below and if you interest is peaked, read a short excerpt and decide for yourself.

Anne Rosenbaum leads a life of quiet Los Angeles privilege, the wife of Hollywood executive Howard Rosenbaum and mother of their seventeen-year-old son, Sam. Years ago Anne and Howard met studying literature at Columbia-she, the daughter of a British diplomat from London, he a boy from an Orthodox Jewish neighborhood in Brooklyn. Now on sleek blue California evenings, Anne attends halogen-lit movie premieres on the arm of her powerful husband. But her private life is lived in the world of her garden, reading books.

When one of Howard's friends, the head of a studio, asks Anne to make a reading list, she casually agrees-though, as a director reminds her, "no one reads in Hollywood." To her surprise, they begin calling: screen-writers; producers, from their bungalows; and agents, from their plush offices on Wilshire and Beverly. Soon Anne finds herself leading an exclusive book club for the industry elite. Emerging gradually from her seclusion, she guides her readers into the ideas and beauties of Donne, Yeats, Auden, and Mamet, with her brilliant and increasingly bold opinions.

But when a crisis of identity unexpectedly turns an anguished Howard back toward the Orthodoxy he left behind as a young man, Anne must set out to save what she values above all else: her husband's love. At once fiercely intelligent and emotionally gripping, You or Someone Like You confronts the fault lines between inherited faith and personal creed, and, through the surprising transformation of one exceptional, unforgettable woman, illuminates literature's power to change our lives.

eBooks About Everythinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14037031797540661324noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5435139896039760099.post-18583229622724649172009-05-11T09:40:00.001-07:002009-05-11T09:40:47.743-07:00The Girls From Ames by Jeffrey Zaslow
I am a big sucker for books about women's friendships so it is no surprise that I picked up The Girls From Ames.

Forty years of close friendship is no mean feat! Especially in this day and age when so many of us leave the scenes of our childhoods and build lives so far away.

Zaslow who co-wrote The Last Lecture and is a regular contributor to the Wall Street Journal is a wonderful writer. He spent a year getting to know these women. He Interviewed them and their families, hung out at a reunion, read letters and emails and examined scrapbooks.

This should be a fabulous book. It is, actually, a fairly interesting book. It isn't dreadful or even bad; it just isn't wonderful. I do not want to diminish the fact that these ten women have remained friends through all of life experience for four decades. And yet, this book was a long slog!

It is impossible to cover forty years and eleven character and do them justice in 300 pages. After all character and plot are not built by telling story after loosely related story and hoping that some how it will all jell.

Most of my problem with this book stems from the fact that you never really get to know any one of these women well; never mind all of them. And they are not individually flamboyant enough to clearly differentiate themselves. I spent a lot of time going "OK, who exactly is Jenny (or Karen or Karla)." I finally resorted to making a cheat sheet on an index card that I put next to my table.

My other problem is that I didn't get any real sense of place and time. In other words, nothing really evoked and emotional response or deep recognition of these women or their particular world either as children or as adults. There early years took place in a world vastly different than mine. In a well written story (fiction or non-fiction) the author paints a picture that evokes time, place and circumstances. In this book; not so much.

Perhaps if you are from Ames, or if you are younger than I you will love this book. I really wanted to!

As children, they formed a special bond, growing up in the small town of Ames, Iowa. As young women, they moved to eight different states, yet they managed to maintain an extraordinary friendship that would carry them through college and careers, marriage and motherhood, dating and divorce, the death of a child, and the mysterious death of the eleventh member of their group.

Capturing their remarkable story, The Girls from Ames is a testament to the enduring, deep bonds of women as they experience life's challenges, and the power of friendship to overcome even the most daunting odds.

Because they came of age in an era of unprecedented opportunity for women, their story also examines how feminism's major breakthroughs have been seized or wasted, and captures what it was like to be girls in the sixties, to come of age in the seventies and eighties, to be new mothers in the nineties, and enter middle age in the new millennium and how close female relationships can shape every aspect of women's lives. The publishing business ought to concentrate first on their core value: getting books people love to readers who love them. --- Anonymous "Publishing Professional"

First let me give the guy (I assume it is a guy) credit for the statement that he hasn't heard a reader say they want more "digital stuff" in their books. This is a depressingly accurate statement. Readers, the dying breed that still exist probably don't say that.

The problem is that there are several generations (GenX,Gen Y, the Millennials and whatever comes next) that have been raised to EXPECT digital stuff (videos and audio and animations and links) as a part of any media they consume. What would FaceBook, MySpace or even Twitter be without digital stuff?

Sure, they read. Text will always be with us. But it is mostly a big stretch to call them readers. They are in fact consumers and creators of digital stuff.

They are not patronizing Borders or Barnes and Nobles. They are increasing relying on information they download from the Internet. Much of it free. Who needs bookstores?

When it comes to publishing the problem is slightly different. The Internet has enabled almost anyone with something to show, say or sing to publish their work. This is incredibly artistically liberating. It is, however, rarely lucrative. Most of the owners of the intellectual property do not make any money at all.

As people come to expect more interactive publications there is an unfortunate downside. Many works of genius may never be commercially viable because the author lacks the skills or the ability to assemble a team.

This is where Publishers become incredibly important. Their role in this new world is to find those geniuses, help assemble teams and promote the finished publications. If the current batch of publishers want to remain in business they will have to substantially change their outlook and attitude. I'm rooting for them!

del.icio.us Tags: books,ebooks,e-books,publishing industry,digital media,digital reading

eBooks About Everythinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14037031797540661324noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5435139896039760099.post-61686254185732636522009-04-29T06:49:00.001-07:002009-04-29T06:49:24.270-07:00J.R.R.Tolkien's eBooks Discounted This Week

This week we are discounting all Tolkien's eBooks. The Hobbit, Lord of the Rings (individually and collectively) and the Children of Hurin.

It took six year to convince the J.R.R. Tolkien's estate to put these great books into eBook format. That is "more than half as long as the author needed to complete his Lord of the Rings trilogy" according to the Associated Press (via USA Today).

"The Tolkien estate wanted to be absolutely confident that e-books were not something ephemeral," said David Brawn, publishing operations director at HarperCollins UK. "We were finally able to convince the Tolkien estate that the e-book is a legitimate, widespread format."

It's simple:

Click here to see all of these great titles

Add them to your shopping cart

Use coupon code jRrT59 at check out to get a 20% discount

Start reading

<div class="wlWriterSmartContent" id="scid:0767317B-992E-4b12-91E0-4F059A8CECA8:773a98a7-1a12-4161-b03e-8a3c7f2f5158" style="padding-right: 0px; Whatever the reason I could not get into this book and stay there.

Make up you own mind by reading a sample. And then let me know what you think.

At times stern, at other times patient, at times perceptive, at other times in sad denial, Olive Kitteridge, a retired schoolteacher, deplores the changes in her little town of Crosby, Maine, and in the world at large, but she doesn’t always recognize the changes in those around her: a lounge musician haunted by a past romance; a former student who has lost the will to live; Olive’s own adult child, who feels tyrannized by her irrational sensitivities; and her husband, Henry, who finds his loyalty to his marriage both a blessing and a curse.

As the townspeople grapple with their problems, mild and dire, Olive is brought to a deeper understanding of herself and her life–sometimes painfully, but always with ruthless honesty. Olive Kitteridge offers profound insights into the human condition–its conflicts, its tragedies and joys, and the endurance it requires.

del.icio.us Tags: ebook,e-book,ebook review,Olive Kitteridge,Pulitzer

eBooks About Everythinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14037031797540661324noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5435139896039760099.post-91261317552691050552009-04-21T12:29:00.001-07:002009-04-22T05:21:34.210-07:00eBook Discounts for Earth Day

You won't be disappointed!

READ WITH KIDS -- Last year I wrote a longish piece on an organization called Reading is Fundamental (RIF). RIF is the oldest child literacy program in the US. There current drive is to log 5 million minutes spent reading to kids. Love of books and reading is perhaps the greatest gift you can give a child.
So here's the deal: for a second year, Reading Is Fundamental (RIF) and US Airways are working together to help children nationwide discover the joy of reading.

Starting April, adults are invited to join the 2009 Read with Kids Challenge and help collectively log 5 million minutes spent reading with kids. You’ll have the chance of winning a family vacation to the Walt Disney World Resort® and more great prizes. Get on board!

UNESCO WORLD BOOK DAY -- 23 April: The idea for this celebration originated in Catalonia where on 23 April, Saint George's Day, a rose is traditionally given as a gift for each book sold. The success of the World Book and Copyright Day will depend primarily on the support received from all parties concerned (authors, publishers, teachers, librarians, public and private institutions, humanitarian NGOs and the mass media), who have been mobilized in each country by UNESCO National Commissions, UNESCO Clubs, Centres and Associations, Associated Schools and Libraries, and by all those who feel motivated to work together in this world celebration of books and authors.

This is a symbolic date for world literature for on this date and in the same year of 1616, Cervantes, Shakespeare and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega all died. It is also the date of birth or death of other prominent authors such as Maurice Druon, K.Laxness, Vladimir Nabokov, Josep Pla and Manuel Mejía Vallejo. It was a natural choice for UNESCO's General Conference to pay a world-wide tribute to books and authors on this date, encouraging everyone, and in particular young people, to discover the pleasure of reading and gain a renewed respect for the irreplaceable contributions of those who have furthered the social and cultural progress of humanity.

eBooks About Everythinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14037031797540661324noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5435139896039760099.post-55245946868426676512009-04-17T03:02:00.001-07:002009-04-17T03:02:10.878-07:00The Piano Teacher by Janice Y. Lee

The Piano Teacher is complicated, eloquent, haunting and thought provoking. Not one of the characters is particularly sympathetic, never mind likable. The story jumps between decades with wild abandon. The plot is violent and explores the highly disturbing, damaging nature of war and its aftermath. It is the story of love and ultimate betrayal.

If that sounds negative, than consider my other observations. Janice Lee's portrayal of Hong Kong are so vivid you can almost smell and hear the market place. The description of life in Colonies is pitch perfect; the gossip, the intrigue and the boredom. The language is eloquent. The plot is carefully constructed. The character development is extraordinary.

The story presents two snapshots of life in Hong Kong. The snapshots are ten years apart. Life before the war life is circumscribed by social status and ritual. The Europeans, especially the English have created their own alternative universe right on the top of Victoria Peak.

Once the war is over the survivors (of both the war and the occupation) are deeply scarred. They emerge forever changed by the circumstances of incarceration. starvation and torture. And yet, apparently nothing much has changed. Life has more or less picked up exactly where it left off. The colony is back in business and the rigid social structures and rituals have survived.

Claire Pendleton, the piano teacher, provides a stark contrast between the cynicism of the old and the naivety of the new. In the end, she effectively provides a focus and a rather harrowing catharsis.

This book is a real hybrid; part historical fiction, part romance and part mystery. I suspect you will either love or hate it. I, personally, loved it.

In the sweeping tradition of The English Patient, a gripping tale of love and betrayal set in war-torn Hong Kong

In 1942, Will Truesdale, an Englishman newly arrived in Hong Kong, falls headlong into a passionate relationship with Trudy Liang, a beautiful Eurasian socialite. But their love affair is soon threatened by the invasion of the Japanese as World War II overwhelms their part of the world. Will is sent to an internment camp, where he and other foreigners struggle daily for survival. Meanwhile, Trudy remains outside, forced to form dangerous alliances with the Japanese in particular, the malevolent head of the gendarmerie, whose desperate attempts to locate a priceless collection of Chinese art lead to a chain of terrible betrayals.

Ten years later, Claire Pendleton comes to Hong Kong and is hired by the wealthy Chen family as their daughter's piano teacher. A provincial English newlywed, Claire is seduced by the heady social life of the expatriate community. At one of its elegant cocktail parties, she meets Will, to whom she is instantly attracted¿but as their affair intensifies, Claire discovers that Will's enigmatic persona hides a devastating past. As she begins to understand the true nature of the world she has entered, and long-buried secrets start to emerge, Claire learns that sometimes the price of survival is love.

Read an excerpt here

del.icio.us Tags: ebook,e-book,ebook reviews,The Piano Teacher,Hong Kong,Janice Y Lee

eBooks About Everythinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14037031797540661324noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5435139896039760099.post-82803288113340786762009-04-15T03:40:00.000-07:002009-04-15T03:41:46.088-07:00eBook Discounts for April 15, 2009

But I digress. . .

The point is that even if it is popular genre fiction gets no respect. Never has. Probably never will.

During the great depression of the 1930's it was called pulp fiction. Maybe because most of the books were printed on cheap paper. Maybe as a pejorative designation. No matter. However you think about it the fact is that the publishing industry looked down there noses because these books were sold in "non-traditional" outlets like bus stations and liquor stores.

The writing wasn't necessarily eloquent. The vocabulary pedestrian and small, The plots were formulaic. They were popular with the unwashed masses and they were cheap. All this made it easy to put them down as "not literature."

Because it was considered inferior, pulp fiction was under the radar of the Hays Commission; the enforcers of morality. An alternative publishing space opened up. Many writers got there start churning out pot boilers for mass consumption. Erotica, particularly gay and lesbian fiction, gained a venue. And as the country moved into the 1950s Lesbian stories became increasingly popular. Over the years it has become almost mainstream.

So maybe, just maybe, I am paranoid. Perhaps the whole dust up with Amazon is about disrespecting genre fiction and not about GLBT and erotica titles at all.

And I still have that bridge. . . .

del.icio.us Tags: books,the filly,amazon,censorship,probst,pulp fictions,GLBT fiction

eBooks About Everythinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14037031797540661324noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5435139896039760099.post-84694082718179735962009-04-13T03:52:00.001-07:002009-04-13T03:52:05.613-07:00Amazon Ranking and Censorship
It is hard to overestimate the importance of rank to an Amazon author or bookseller. It is an objective measure of a book's popularity and salability. Everyone wants to be #1 (or a least in the top 1000).

Readers use rank as an unofficial guide reading guide. Authors and booksellers use it as a quick calculator for sales -- If you rank 1-10 you can expect to sell a book every few minutes. If you have a high ranking like 50,000 you might sell your books in a year or so. Booksellers use rank as a buying guide when ordering inventory for their stores.

Rank is everything.

So what happens when Amazon "de-ranks" a title? Pretty much, the books chances of being sold are 0.

Last week Mark Probst noticed a curious thing. His book, a young adult romance title, The Filly, mysteriously lost rank.

So he wrote Amazon and asked them why. Here is their answer:

In consideration of our entire customer base, we exclude "adult" material from appearing in some searches and best seller lists. Since these lists are generated using sales ranks, adult materials must also be excluded from that feature.

Hence, if you have further questions, kindly write back to us.

Best regards,

Ashlyn D

Member Services

Amazon.com Advantage

Oh, did I mention that The Filly is a Western and that the romance is between two men? That other than being a "gay-themed" story it is strictly G rated? It seems that all of the sudden Amazon has gotten into the business of censorship!

With one simple algorithm change they have de-ranked GLBT titles and any of those where the publisher has labeled the books as erotica. As of today Brokeback Mountain, Rubyfruit Jungle, The Well of Loneliness, some of the teen books by Alex Sanchez, and Heather Has Two Mommies have been de-ranked.

I find this deeply disturbing and actually offensive. Even if I personally do not read gay themed erotica, I will fight to the death to preserve your right to read it.

Mostly it has been the government who has indulged in this kind of censorship (aka book banning). Now a major corporation has entered the culture wars and unilaterally decided what is appropriate.

Maybe you don't care about erotica or GLBT literature. But if Amazon can abruptly affect the market for these books today; what or who will they decide to target tomorrow?

del.icio.us Tags: books,the filly,amazon,censorship,probst

eBooks About Everythinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14037031797540661324noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5435139896039760099.post-13644121368737483752009-04-10T04:04:00.001-07:002009-04-10T04:04:04.937-07:00The Code of Love by Andro Linklater

Astonishing, amazing, remarkable, and incredible, all apply to Linklater's The Code Of Love. You could add fascinating, riveting, captivating and engrossing. This is a true story that is a romance, a war story and a mystery all rolled into one.

Linklater moves seamlessly between the story of Pamela and Donald Hill's romance, Donald's horrific war story as a prisoner of war and the saga of decoding Donald's journal.

The early part of the book makes you feel as if you are living in England in the early 1940s. He paints a picture of daily life that is vibrant and clear.

He is equally clear when describing the world of ciphers and codes. In easily accessible language he tells the story of Philip Aston's attempts to break the code. This part of the story is fascinating all by its self. An added impact comes from the realization of just how brilliant and disciplined Donald had to have been to create and use such a code.

In many ways this is a book that broke my heart. Donald's fight for survival was heroic. I marveled at his sheer determination and grit. The courage it took to hold his mind and body together under appalling conditions and dreadful psychological trauma is almost unbelievable. He should have had a happy ending. . .Lord knows, he deserved it.

And yet, it was not to be. He obviously suffered from a severe case of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder which was unnamed and untreatable. In many ways his struggle to create a normal life, medicate himself with alcohol and bury the trauma are even more courageous than his basic survival.

If his story were not so familiar today I might have been able to shake it off. But over the last few days I have thought about the veterans of the current war. It is shameful that with all the information we have about PTSD our veterans are still untreated. They too, must struggle to create a normal life, medicate themselves and bury their trauma. What a miserable statement about our society!

Reading this book, however, will remind you of what really matter in life: the power of love. If you don't read another book this year, read this one!

An astonishing true tale of secrets, love, and war.

Pamela Kirrage, beautiful and impulsive, met and fell in love with the dashing RAF pilot Donald Hill just months before Hill was shipped off to the Far East to protect the British colonies against Japanese aggression. They exchanged rings the day before he left, a promise to marry as soon as he returned. Little did they know that five years would pass before they saw each other again.

The Code of Love tells the stirring tale of Donald's experiences in the front lines of the Pacific Theater and Pamela's war efforts back in England in a dramatic, deeply moving portrayal of the World War II era and its aftermath. On the day the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, they also moved into Hong Kong, where Donald had the misfortune to be part of a small group of officers in charge of a meager five planes. He spent the rest of the war in a POW camp, keeping a journal of the indignities he faced in complex, nearly unbreakable code. Meanwhile, Pamela was swept into the frantic swirl of a wartime society eager to live to the fullest. She cooked meals for secret agents and danced the nights away with handsome soldiers. But her love for Donald never altered, and the two married within weeks of Donald's release at the end of the war. The scars Hill bore from his years of emotional encoding would eventually wear away at their relationship, though never their love.

Andro Linklater skillfully weaves the many fascinating parts of this tale together into an unforgettable narrative. From the mesmerizing siege of Hong Kong, to the romantic roller coaster of a truly great love, to the unbelievable efforts of the mathematician who finally cracked the encoded diary, The Code of Love is storytelling at its very finest.

del.icio.us Tags: ebook,e-books,ebooks about people,codes,Donald Hill,Philip Aston,World War II

eBooks About Everythinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14037031797540661324noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5435139896039760099.post-73262564134130638972009-04-08T05:24:00.001-07:002009-04-08T05:24:49.022-07:00Weekly Specials -- eBooks About Taxes at 20% off!

This is for those of you who waited till the last minute to do your taxes. We are offering them at a whopping 20% discount. With the discount and your eBook points you may want to get these now so that you can start planning for 2009!

Use coupon code C2MJ4 at checkout to get your discount on these titles.

<><>

JK LASSERS 1001 Deductions & Tax Breaks for 2009 T by Weltman, Barbara
J.K. In effect they are digital natives while the rest of us are immigrants.

I know that my daughter and I have very different ways of finding and processing information. She consumes her information in small rapid bursts. Google, blogs, tweets and wikis are her "go to" sources. She intuitively knows that all information is linked. She also expects that she can easily find a community who knows something about anything she wants to know. All she has to do is tweet.

I instinctively immerse myself in a topic and spend hours digging out the important bits. I know, intellectually, that information is linked but struggle to find out how. Twittering doesn't occur to me because the idea that 140 characters is the key to communication is an anathema to me.

We look for, read and process information in very different ways. She has an ability to quickly grab information that I will never have. Her's was built in a connected world. My abilities were honed in libraries with card catalogs, index cards and bibliographies. The pathways in our brains are incredibly different.

The implications for the future of education, publishing and reading are enormous. In a world where readers believe that all information and people are linked, you can't help but wonder how long, one dimensional and analytical books will survive.

del.icio.us Tags: ebook,e-book,digital reading,twitter

eBooks About Everythinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14037031797540661324noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5435139896039760099.post-66935865464118950812009-04-03T03:49:00.001-07:002009-04-03T03:49:27.020-07:00I'm Perfect, You're Doomed: Tales from a Jehovah's Witness Upbringing eBook edition by Kyria Abrahams

The first half of Kyria Abraham's I'm Perfect You're Doomed is like taking a trip to strange land. It looks familiar, the people sound the same but the culture is very different. The inhabitants have peculiar superstitions and curious rituals.

Kyria takes us on a tour and explains. In this land the Devil is hiding in Smurfs and lurking at yard sales. Only repeating the word "Jehovah" over and over again will drive out evil. Inhabitants do not dance or smoke but alcohol is permitted. The people do not celebrate holidays, value education or socialize with foreigners.

Growing up this was her world. A world in which these beliefs were accepted without question. And where it was hip to be holy and zealous. Her (slightly twisted) sense of humor keeps you entertained and amused.

The tone change as she enters her teenage years and battles with OCD, her sexuality and a creeping apostasy. Her solution? Get married!

From here on the story is like the proverbial train wreck. Disgusting and riveting. Abrahams carefully chronicles her depression and loneliness as she attempts to replace the void left by her religion. She is painfully honest about her ventures into adultery, alcohol and suicide.

This book ends as she finally seizes responsibility for her life and begins to grow up. I suspect that is a more interesting story in the long run. Hopefully she will write it someday.

I was deeply affected by this book. I found it by turns disgusting, exhilarating, terrifying and hopeful. With all those conflicting emotions it is hard to write a simple review. In the end I was glad I read it and you will be too.

Here is the publisher's note:

I'm Perfect, You're Doomed is the story of Kyria Abrahams's coming-of-age as a Jehovah's Witness -- a doorbell-ringing "Pioneer of the Lord." Her childhood was haunted by the knowledge that her neighbors and schoolmates were doomed to die in an imminent fiery apocalypse; that Smurfs were evil; that just about anything you could buy at a yard sale was infested by demons; and that Ouija boards -- even if they were manufactured by Parker Brothers -- were portals to hell. Never mind how popular you are when you hand out the Watchtower instead of candy at Halloween.

When Abrahams turned eighteen, things got even stranger. That's when she found herself married to a man she didn't love, with adultery her only way out. "Disfellowshipped" and exiled from the only world she'd ever known, Abrahams realized that the only people who could save her were the very sinners she had prayed would be smitten by God's wrath.

Raucously funny, deeply unsettling, and written with scorching wit and deep compassion, I'm Perfect, You're Doomed explores the ironic absurdity of growing up believing that nothing matters because everything's about to be destroyed.

del.icio.us Tags: ebooks,e-books,ebook reviews,abrahams,jehovahs witness,ebooks about religion

eBooks About Everythinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14037031797540661324noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5435139896039760099.post-51362417249168129642009-04-01T03:53:00.000-07:002009-04-01T03:54:08.991-07:00Discounted eBooks - April 1, 2009

Kiyosaki, the best-selling author of Rich Dad Poor Dad has taken to posting each chapter on the web as he finishes it. The entire book, Conspiracy of the Rich: The 8 New Rules of Money is due out in paperback form in September.

Several years ago Steven King was one of the authors who pioneered the idea of posting book chapters online. Several years later we began to see books complied from blog posts like Chris Anderson's The Long Tail. This year we are seeing books that are nothing more than complied Twitter Posts (Tweets).

All of this activity still comes back to the central question; what exactly is a book? eBooks have obliterated the idea that is something contained between two covers.

Yet, Publishers still seem to think that a book is just a collection of words bunched together in sentences and paragraphs with an occasional picture thrown in. They see their job in terms of acting as a gateway to the marketplace.

They fail to recognize that they are more than basic content providers. The Internet is slowly doing away with gatekeepers. Unless Publishers find ways to add value to raw information by presenting it in a organized and useful fashion they will go the way of all dinosaurs.

del.icio.us Tags: publishing industry,ebook,e-books

eBooks About Everythinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14037031797540661324noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5435139896039760099.post-16814875133535229392009-03-27T04:38:00.001-07:002009-03-27T04:38:14.670-07:00House of Cards: A Tale of Hubris and Wretched Excess on Wall Street by William Cohan
Any book that has "wretched excess" in the title is sure to grab my attention! Although given the subject matter I would have probably picked up House of Cards without this particular subtitle. Books on Wall Street hold some dark fascination and I have read everything from The Predator's Ball by Connie Bruck to Michael Lewis' Liar's Poker.

The first section of the book is a detailed a day by day account of the final Bear Stern's meltdown. There was a lot going on, some of it quite technical. Cohan struggles to explain a lot of complex and technical transactions and the people at the center of the action.

There is a lot of technical detail to plow through. And there are even more people people to keep tract of. I found myself a little confused by roles, titles and events; never mind the technical parts of the transactions. In this section, he gets an A for effort and a D for accomplishment.

In part two, he backs up tells the eighty-five year history of Bear Sterns and it's last four CEOs. He draws finely detailed portraits of the men and the corporate culture they fostered. In part three he details more current history (2001-2008) of the Firm, Wall Street and the US government. By the time you have read all these pages you really understand how the combination of the men, the government and the corporate cultures on Wall Street worked to bring down the entire firm. Here he gets an A for effort and a B+ for accomplishment.

I have to say, I was rather disappointed overall. The book has a thrown together quality about it. It would have benefited greatly from decent editing. Much of the material was restated over and over again. Cohan relies on a lot of quoted statements pulled directly (and indiscriminately) from other sources. The flow is often confusing and the sequence of the sections didn't work very well.

Unfortunately, there are some glaring and inexcusable errors as well. The first one is on the very first page where he states that Orlando, Florida is 2,500 miles from New York City. A simple Google search will tell you it is only 1,081.

If, however, you are willing to plow through the errors and the extraneous material you will glean a pretty good understanding of what happened at Bear Sterns and why.

If you do decide to read it, start with part two.

On March 5, 2008, at 10:15 A.M., a hedge fund manager in Florida wrote a post on his investing advice Web site that included a startling statement about Bear Stearns & Co., the nation’s fifth-largest investment bank: “In my book, they are insolvent.”

This seemed a bold and risky statement. Bear Stearns was about to announce profits of $115 million for the first quarter of 2008, had $17.3 billion in cash on hand, and, as the company incessantly boasted, had been a colossally profitable enterprise in the eighty-five years since its founding.

Ten days later, Bear Stearns no longer existed, and the calamitous financial meltdown of 2008 had begun.
How this happened – and why – is the subject of William D. Cohan’s superb and shocking narrative that chronicles the fall of Bear Stearns and the end of the Second Gilded Age on Wall Street. Bear Stearns serves as the Rosetta Stone to explain how a combination of risky bets, corporate political infighting, lax government regulations and truly bad decision-making wrought havoc on the world financial system.

Cohan’s minute-by-minute account of those ten days in March makes for breathless reading, as the bankers at Bear Stearns struggled to contain the cascading series of events that would doom the firm, and as Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson, New York Federal Reserve Bank President Tim Geithner, and Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke began to realize the dire consequences for the world economy should the company go bankrupt.

del.icio.us Tags: ebook,e-books,ebooks about people,house of cards,cohan,bear sterns

eBooks About Everythinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14037031797540661324noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5435139896039760099.post-9130414067097021032009-03-25T08:02:00.000-07:002009-03-25T08:03:40.375-07:00eBook Discounts for March 25, 2008

But good literature is only a small percentage of the 500,000 titles. Much of this work is heavy duty academic tomes and historical artifacts that are of limited interest to the general reading public. Quantity is one thing, quality and desirability are another!

I keep wondering why Sony thinks this partnership with Google is a good idea for them? Yes. they become bigger than Amazon but at what price? They are giving Google a huge boost and while it may derail the Kindle in the short run, but they are probably hastening the demise of their reader in the long run.

Google is obviously setting the stage for online books. Books that make proprietary readers unnecessary. Their goal is to render all eBook readers as interesting artifacts.

Maybe the answer is that Sony and Google are hoping to create an iTunes-like store with content for eBook readers. The problem of course is that ultimately the iPhone or something like it will make the eBook reader an interesting artifact without any help from Google at all.

It is fascinating to watch the anti-evolutionary forces in the eBook market join forces to release books from Darwin's period and call it progress.

del.icio.us Tags: sony,google,amazon,sony eReader,Google Book Search

eBooks About Everythinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14037031797540661324noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5435139896039760099.post-32547407102794131592009-03-20T04:13:00.001-07:002009-03-20T04:13:58.730-07:00Without Warning By John Birmingham eBook edition
Removing the USA from the world political scene is a daunting task. Birmingham does a credible job of showing what a dangerous place the world would become without our power base.

This book examines a recent past in which the mainland USA was taken out of the world power equation. The plot devices and characters are well enough developed that by the end of this book you are ready for the sequel. Unfortunately, that next book is at least one year away from being published.

I like some of the story lines better than others. By and large though if you are a Science Fiction fan or a fan of the disaster novel this is a good read following an interesting premise.

Without the USA in play the world degrades quickly into disorder, as you might expect. Some outcomes seem likely and strategically correct. Others stretch credulity a bit but are plausible enough to carry your attention.

All in all Birmingham does a good job of drawing lines between the disappearance of the majority of US military power and the increase of chaos worldwide. This is a great spring break distraction or a really nice find if you haven’t read any of Birmingham’s other books. They are all worth reading if military fiction is one of the types of novels you enjoy. His knowledge base is solid and his writing skills are first class, so enjoy.

In Kuwait, American forces are stacked up, locked and loaded for the invasion of Iraq. In Paris, a covert agent, a woman who inhabits a twilight of lies and death, is close to cracking a terrorist cell. And just north of the equator, a forty-foot wood-hulled sailboat, manned by a drug runner, a pirate, and two gun-slinging beauties, is witness to the unspeakable. In one instant, all around the world, for politicians and peasants, from Gaza to Geneva, things will never be the same. A wave of inexplicable energy has slammed into the continental United States.

America, as we know it, is gone. . . . WITHOUT WARNING

Now U.S. soldiers are fighting a war without command or control. A correspondent records horrors for no one. Washington is gone and the line of succession is in tatters; the functioning remnants of government are in Pearl Harbor, Guantanamo Bay, and one desperate, isolated corner of the Northwest. For the jihads, it’s Allah’s miracle. For Saddam, it’s a chance to attack. Iran declares war on an America that doesn’t exist–except in the hearts and souls of the men and women who want it to.

In this astounding work of alternate fiction, John Birmingham hurtles us into a scenario that is unimaginable but shatteringly real: a world of financial ruin where a cloud of noxious waste–from America’s burning cities–darkens Europe, while men and women in offices around the globe struggle to make decisions that cannot hold and opportunists unleash their secret demons.

From a slick Texas lawyer who happens to be in the right place at the right time to a hard-working city engineer in Seattle who becomes his terrified city’s only hope, from the cancer-stricken secret agent to a drug runner off the Mexican coast and a U.S. general in Cuba, Without Warning tells a fast, furious story of survival, violence, and a new, soul-shattering reality. The first in an epic trilogy that will leave readers breathless and astounded, Without Warning offers a world without its policeman, its Great Satan, or its savior–as an unknowable future struggles to be born.

del.icio.us Tags: ebook,e-books,ebooks about scifi,science fiction,altnerative history.
