If someone asks me to recommend a free blogging service, I tell them Blogger. It's Free, it allows you to save your blog to your own site, it even has spell-checking.

Blogger is still a good choice. They support Team Blogs.

But Microsoft now offers Spaces which is a good alternative, though they don't support multiple posters, they do support categories which Blogger does NOT support.

WordPress.com is a new good alternative. They support categories and an RSS feed for each category. You can create pages off the homepage. They don't give you control of templates or appearance of your site other than themes.

Busy Girl has been playing on the same soccer team for 3 years. The coach is pretty good and the kids have a good time. Yes, I know fun (and the hokey pokey) is what it's all about.

The problem is that these kids aren't improving in the game, at all. ... Busy Girl is an OK player, but the other kids are just not athletes of any sort and the team is not even competing. They won some games when they were younger, but it was all chance then.

Again, I do understand that it's important for them to have fun, and they are for the most part. But, they moved up a division and the fact is that things are more competitive. They got smushed today 7-0, that won't be fun for long.

I just remember being on sports teams and around age 10 not really trying too hard because i didn't want to ruin my "look"...ya know, sweat isn't so cute. It seems like kids are worring about that kind of stuff earlier and earlier in life. I was at my nieces' soccer game a couple weeks ago (she is 9) and noticing some of the girls were really cuted up and not too interested in the game. They were just there for the social aspect. If thats whats going on and your daughter is really interested in the sport you may have to think about getting her into a more competitive league. That is my fear about Cassidy. She doesn't like to sweat or run.

Latino issues and the first Democratic debate

I still love watching NFL games. I actually prefer them to College Games. At least I am familar with some of the players in the NFL. But more and more I find myself not minding if I miss games. Case in point: I actually watched the Democratic debates in Albuquerque this Thursday night instead of the opening NFL game.

I enjoyed this analysis of the debate and emailed the author this note:

Thanks for pointing out the position inconsistencies.

I especially love the implied contradictions you expose regarding racial profiling and the argument against racial gerrymandering yet we have a debate that is supposed to cater to Hispanics.

One thing that grates me that would have fit nicely in your column is the fact that all American issues are also “Latino” issues. Latinos benefit from lower unemployment, lower taxes, business development, etc. I know that collectively there is a large percentage of Latinos in lower incomes but not ALL Latinos are poor and Latino issues aren’t just about poverty, Spanish as a second language, and immigrant issues.

Not just insults but great jokes.

If you could actually speak spanish well enough to give a complete speach in spanish, or to have a conversation in spanish, then more power to you, but if you think spanish-speakers will relate better to you because you can speak a prepared phrase in spanish, then you'll come accross as patronizing.

"For both parties, to grow the base of support is going to depend on their public policies," says Tatcho Mindiola, associate professor of sociology and director of the Center for Mexican American Studies at the University of Houston. "That is far more important than whether you can say a few phrases phonetically in Spanish."
