Afterward we ate lunch at the Grand Café Byblos where Vickie had courgette soup, Jim the Oldtimer sandwich (ham salad) accompanied by Dommelsch vaas beer.

It rained in the morning, but stopped by the time we got to Den Haag. It was cloudy but dry the rest of the day and quite mild. We returned to the hotel at 4:15p.

Dinner was at Restaurant D’Vijff Vlieghen (The Five Flies) housed in an old building with a timbered ceiling. Vickie had the pheasant and Jim the hare. It was a special dinner!

Thursday, November 12

This morning we took the audio tour of the Van Gogh Museum. Afterward the morning clouds were clearing and the day was mostly sunny and mild. We took the tram down to the Dam (central square) and followed the walking tour of The Old Center. Lunch consisted of tuna sandwiches and beer at the Café Luxembourg.

In the evening we attended a performance at the Concertgebouw. The tickets were cheap because the arts are subsidized and in addition we had vouchers for 25% off. Surprisingly, the ticket price includes unlimited drinks both before the performance and during the intermission.

Wednesday, November 11

This morning we took the audio tour through the Rijksmuseum known for its Rembrandt paintings.

After lunch at the Koepel Cafe, we followed a walking tour of the Golden Age Canals.

Dinner was at Indrapura, an Indonesian restaurant.

Tuesday, November 10

We arrived in Amsterdam Tuesday morning and checked in to the NH Museum Quarter hotel with a good view of the canal. It was not your fault!!! It turned out this weekend was Salmon Days for Issaquah and there were countless people there. Both Jimmy and Vickie's car and our car could not reach the Issaquah trailhead either. I tried your cell phone and left a couple messages and then was able to reach Jimmy's so we all met at Highpoint Trailhead which is the next exit on I-90 after Issaquah. We figured you must have gone back so went on our hike without you.

It was a terrible hike. It was muddy, long (4.2 miles, 2 1/4 hours), Jimmy started crying at one point, Mike got lost, and we all agreed we had never had a more miserable day.
Today Mary and I joined Ruthie, Jack, Jeannie, Art, Gail, Aunt Ruth, Gary, Sandi and Dick at Ruthie’s place at Whidbey Island. Everyone contributed to lunch and appreciated the extraordinary hospitality of our hosts!
After lunch Ruthie, Jeannie, Art, Gail, Mary and I hiked 2.3 miles along the high bluff as shown below. The day was sunny with a nice breeze off the ocean that kept the warm day comfortable.

Mary wrote:

Today's Cougar Mt. hike was a once-in-a-lifetime event for the experienced hikers of the renowned Evergreen Hiking Club. The breathe-taking scene the group witnessed from Belvedere Vista via Primrose Overlook Trail will be remembered by the group for the rest of their accumulated lives. In short, it was fantastic. Their only regret was that absent member Gail had pleaded with them not to have a memorable hike while she was sitting in the stands of a football game. Although the glories of this venture could never be equaled, hike leader Mary (myself) vowed to find a very satisfying destination for the group on their next time out. The hike took 2 hours and covered 3.5 miles, burning 452 calories per Mary's new Polar watch.

Today’s hike:
Hikers besides Mike and Mary (myself) were Gail, Jim, and Vickie. The latter two made a surprise appearance. Last night Jim and Vickie attended the third in a series of four consecutive operas of Wagner's Ring of the Nibelungs which lasted until 11 pm. However, they appeared well rested as did Gail whose busy social engagements also kept her out late. It turned out to be a terrific hike. The rain became mist and then disappeared leaving a moist and glistening background to our path down and back from the glacial boulder. Mary persuaded Mike to let Lily attend promising to take full responsibility for the little tyke. Lily behaved admirably except for unceremoniously greeting passing dogs on leashes. As hiking with walking poles and holding onto a leash became difficult for Mary, Jim and then Gail took turns being in charge of the pooch. Mike "came around" by thankfully cleaning up after Lily and taking charge of her at the end by giving her water and safely transporting her home. At that point Lily quickly disappeared behind the sofa for a snooze. It was a beautiful day and a beautiful hike which was 3 miles long and took an hour and a half.

Mary wrote:

The Evergreen Hiking Club today accomplished a lovely hike beginning again from the Anti-Aircraft Peak Trailhead. Participants were Mike, Jim, Vickie, Gail, and myself, Mary. We headed out down familiar Shangri La Trail turning at Surprise Creek Trail and travelled down a side path called Good's Corner which took us to the Park boundary. Continuing down a steep decline we travelled through the tall willowy trees and back around Tibbetts Marsh. The day was comfortably moderate with the hot weather not due to arrive until the afternoon. I found my new camera registering low battery so luckily Jim's camera was handy which took the pictures above. We hiked for 1 1/2 hours and traveled 2.8 miles. It was a very enjoyable morning hike.
