Hawkwind and Underground Resistance (LINKS FIXED)

So I was noticed that Hawkwind and Underground Resistance have some striking similarities. These are the 2 songs that made me notice how similar both bands were.

Hawkwind-Sonic Attack

Underground Resistance- Crime Report

These aren't their best songs, for more listening, I recommend the albums
Hawkwind- In Search of Space
Underground Resistance- Interstellar Fugitives

Both have themes of future and space/spaceships
Both released crap-loads of songs

Both experimented with electronics (though UR was not as bold as Hawkwind)

Both probably took alot of acid (I know Hawkwind did, I only have strong suspicions about UR)

Both band's were practically revolving doors for their members with the exception of a few key-characters.
Both were fairly anti-capitalistic (though UR is just plain obnoxious with their releases, Hawkwind were pretty reasonable)

Some differences include:

Alot of UR's stuff sucks. The suck factor of Hawkwind is significantly less.

Hawkwind- British experimental acid-space-rock, UR-militant Detroit techno

Hawkwind had Lemmy (of Motorhead fame), while UR did not. (this makes Hawkwind SIGNIFICANTLY better than UR

UR had black people in it, while Hawkwind was comprised entirely of pasty Englishmen (this incredible difference of melanin gives UR a sharp advantage in sunny weather.

UR is pretty dark and dystopian, while Hawkwind is pretty upbeat and more or less positive most of the time (however, a fair share of songs are dark and scary)
UR would probably win in a fight because even though they'd be out-numbered (maybe? how many people are in UR these days, 3?) , they're in pretty great shape; Also Hawkwind are a bunch of old men. HOWEVER, if Lemmy were to re-join the band, UR would not stand a chance. If Lemmy were in a wheelchair and was missing an arm, then it MIGHT be a fair battle.

Is pretty dang awesome. Some of the songs are duds (in my opinion, but maybe I'm not looking at the big picture?) and some of them are just dripping with greatness. BEDRIDDEN AND DANCING is my absolute favorite. the lyrics are amazing.

Some of the textures and sounds may take a little getting used to ( or you just might not like it at all) Some of my favorite songs resemble carnival music, only the carnival is run by ministry and someone stole all their guitars. This is the first "This song..." album, and the first few stages of coping with death are apparant from the start, (shock, anger). I've never heard electronic music be so sincearly emotional. His voice is so honest and real, it's very hard to misinterpret any of his feelings as overly dramatic or fake, despite the fact that he is screaming and convulsing over his mother's death.

HOLY SHIT THAT'S FUCKING AWESOME.

As amazing as his lyrics surely are, the vocal mix is muddy and quiet, which really pisses me off. I know he does not have a "singer's voice" or whatever the fuck that means, but I don't care. all the better and more honest. Since his voice is so young and relatively "thin" he's decided that it's better off masked by sound, which I feel is a great mistake. To really appreciate this, you should read the lyrics (included in the zip file) along with the album.

Another suggestion about his art which I have no right to make is that I think he should sing with a little more melody. I dunno. maybe that's just me.

Hell, forget I said anything. The songs are amazing by themselves.

This shit is awesome.

I wanna say "really melodic breakcore", but if you wanna spit hairs, this is really just IDM (ugh I hate that term) I'm gonna take a random guess, but I'm pretty sure that this was made in renoise. Intricate melodies cascade through some of the best sounding synthesis (organic sounding) I've heard (maybe ever). The whimsical textures and robotic speech paint a surreal tale of escape from life's problems, (a STARK difference to the theme of the movie "The Holy Mountain" which he's sampled for at least 1 or 2 of the songs.) and has a strange rustic-future fantasy feel to it. This music is quite unlike most stuff I've heard. It's definitely "chin stroking music" but not aloof or boring.

The song I've chosen for the blog is the last track of the EP is "Octopod Sings", and it's not like the rest of the album, as it's more/less a traditional song. (guitar, singing) but I really like it.

Bro used to be called "Pale" (before some bar-band from texas threatened to sued him) and he and Ed Flis (aka duranduranduran made this totally bitching song called "The Year of the Dragon" (good luck finding it) that's definitely worth looking up.

Often I've listened to chiptunes, and thought to myself, "this would be really great if they did some actual production on this rather than just dump the audio out from the gameboy."
That's pretty much what's happened. Some great gameboy music has been expanded with modern technology resulting in some compositions that are really awesome.

I've been a fan of this guy's work for quite some time. Just when I figured he got hit by a bus or joined a convent, he dropped this bomb on me. Chippy electro to the MAXX. (2 x's)

Reguarding Bubble Puppy, There's not much to remarkable about the band it's self, other than they dressed real funny and made a lot of refrences to Alice in Wonderland.

What IS remarkable is their music, namely this song:

-The Story of Skip Bifferty" is their only official release.

-Skip Bifferty was a rock band formed in early 1966, when The Chosen Few (Featuring Alan Hull, later of Lindisfarne) from Newcastle upon Tyne changed their name and got a new singer (cite)

This is totally one of my fav artists right now, his stuff is so youthful and free: I love it. He's one third (or half, I'm not sure) of Wyld File, the people responsible for the Standing in the Way of Control" video for The Gossip, "Gameboy Homeboy"(beck video) and many other awesome things. If that wasn't enough, he also runs one of the cooler labels out there: Audio Dregs . He's also does a ton of art, flash and music which i practically want to hump, it's so good. It's cooler than smoking, I swear.

what other beats/projects have you done?

-what's your current musical project that you're excited about?

New e*rock stuff might take a while to surface, but trying to do something more visual with live manipulated audio/visual sync... that and remixes and some other stuff that i can't really talk about because its going to take too long to finish.

-So you would say that you're still a visual artist primarily then?

Maybe. Well, that's the easiest way to get off the hook when people ask what I do. I'm something different every other week these days.

-When did you start being an artist professionally, and how did that happen?

I made a slow transition over the past 10 years of working only freelance and working for myself. I was a buyer at a record store for ten years after I moved to Portland; doing more and more print design work freelance, and eventually more video and animation, and kept the record label going all along. My "fine art" work has meshed with my "pop culture" side and (commercial side even) more and more. I'm not really making art "professionally" as far as I can tell. ha.

-What software/machines do you like to use ? (for music AND video)

For audio I use Abelton Live almost exclusively now. For videos I use Flash, After Effects and Final Cut, as well as Illustrator and Photoshop and whatever I can scan in there, if there's any animation involved. The usual things as well as some extras like macromedia futuresplash.

What are your favorite drugs?

What do you think about political art?

That's a good question, I feel like politics is in most good art, but maybe in the background. I think living sustain-ably is probably the most important political statement you can make. Eventually the politics will become more apparent in all the things that we do.

What are your favorite mediums when you draw/paint/color whatever it is you do?

I like when everything gets mixed. Drawing and Flash might be my favorites and I should probably incorporate more paper drawings into Flash, but it can be very time consuming. It would be nice to have a scanner that you could load a stack of papers into and it would scan and save in sequence. That's my dream right now.

What's your favorite beer?

What are you typically doing on a friday evening?

That's a good time to stay home and edit video if there's no bands playing that I need to see.

Do you think Justin Timberlake is as dreamy as everyone says he is?

Yeah, pretty much. Maybe not much to look at, but dreamy like a baby horse.

What's the going rate for an e-rock music video these days?

A stack scanner and a Duvel.

Why did you start audiodregs, and how would you say it differs fromother labels in the way it's run?

I did a cassette label in high school (mostly my own music to start), then CDRs, and then did vinyl and CDs with Audio Dregs, but it was always about releasing friends music that wouldn't have been heard otherwise. I didn't know I was "doing a label at first", but it was something. We're different than most because we're not commercially motivated. I'm not trying to release popular bands-usually more insular single expressions of home producers or people that operate between genres, but its about the ideas and working with people that you like. \

What kind of buisness model does the label typically operate under? Small runs? any Distro?
We usually do 1000 CDs and repress if needed. Our main distro is Darla. They are a small indie distro/label and are nice people and consistent and have really helped me out a ton. Its actually possible to our order our CDs through more mainstream places and one stops and like Amazon.com but I really doubt that many get sold that way.

What's the worst/best thing anyone's ever said about your work?

People usually just say that my work is basically The Red Hot Chili Guys in the year 2010. I think that's the best thing anyone has ever said. The worse is when they said that my art made me look fat.

(I know this question is corny) Where do you get inspiration/ideas from?

Friends, the internet, LP covers, video games and zines... Shoboshobo, Mat Brinkman, Ola Vasiljeva, Paper Rad, Matt Lock, Brent Wadden, Andrew Jeffrey Wright, Eye, Kyle Field, Seripop, CF, Zeloot...

Do you garden much?

It sounds like a good idea, but our yard is about 3 feet wide.

What's your favorite ethnic food?

Japanese, Vietnamese and French and those wood oven Euro style pizzas with salad are awesome. In australia they put beats and fried eggs on hamburgers-not very awesome.

from an artistic standpoint, how much of what you do is premeditated/spontanious?

That's always the trick, trying to balance solid premeditated ideas with a spontaneous approach so that the outcome has some surprises. Its like being a scientist in a way.

Can you tell by the line of questioning that I'm ADHD?

I know HD means "high definition" but the other part is like after the year zero?

Doesn't art school just make you throw up in your mouth a little?

I never tried art school. My sister is going to grad school right now for art and it sounds a little intense, but I think it can be good if it challenges you and you can take what you want from it in the end. I'm not a very professional artist, I suppose I should try harder, but I also like that because there's no pressure to follow anyone's rules. BUt I also want to do it all, and art school would probably be a good way to focus for a while.

I guess I don't have anything else to ask... is there anything you wanna talk about/say? music or food or something?

Every now and then, you come across a band from the annals of time that absolutely blows your fucking mind, and you attempt to rationalize how in gods name you made it this far without knowing jack shit about them.

And the worst part about it is it wasn't even suggested by a dear friend or dremt about in a holy vision from god.

That's how I found out about sparks, and quite frankly, I have no idea why this band never conquered the world like the who or the rolling stones or something. I mean, damn man.

SO Jonbro let me borrow this album called HAIR GUITAR by DJ COPY. It's nice and happy! The best way I can think to describe it is slightly midish-arpy-disco-synth pop with a healthy slab of production gravy. The mood is very fanciful, but not gayly so. DEFINITELY cheer up music. There are these smidges of shredish riffs and solos which are vrry nice. Alot of the songs have this really awesome epic kind of fantasy vibe to them which I totally dig. hardcore even.

Myspace is the ultimate internet-music double edged blade. Never before have so many depressingly unfit for real life people made such catastrophically horrible, HORRIBLE music. Sometimes you really can't tell if it's a joke, and other times you KNOW it's not a joke, and yes, the middle school white rapper's mom really did comment on his page and tell him he was "da illest",and that she was his "numba 1 fan".
On the OTHER hand, it's a great way to browse music and meet people that you would NEVER EVER bump into under any other circumstances. I got my first track into print through myspace. I met Jason (dj socky) and mike (polygonskull), and now they're releasing my album under his label, Fantasy Violence Records

Here are interesting artists I've found on myspace:

A myspace artist I'm more than jazzed by is Teen Moms. He's got this green-myspace artist feel to him, but the fun in his music outshines the slight gameboy/fl studio vibe. creme of the myspace electro-dance crop.

Freddy Rupert makes some very interesting music, and has some of the most engaging live shows I've ever seen. He's garnered alot of attention and critical acclaim with his project "This Song is a Mess, but So Am I". I absolutely hate it when people compare new artists to already established artists, but I can't help thinking "if Morissey was roommates with Ministry in college", even though he honestly sounds like neither.

"When I originally started this project in May 2003, it was a way for me to deal with the death of my mother from cancer in January of that same year. I don't think I really had any intentions of dragging it out this long."
