Jim Butler Days 50/50 Raffle

Tickets are now on sale for the Jim Butler Days 50/50 Raffle. There are a maximum of 2,000 tickets to be sold for $5 each, with 50 percent of the total ticket sales going into the jackpot.

Potentially, if all the tickets are sold, the first name drawn on the night of May 23 would receive $4,500, and the second name drawn would receive $500. If all the tickets are not sold, the total sales would still be divided in half, with the first winner receiving 90 percent, and the second winner receiving 10 percent of the jackpot.

Tickets are on sale at the following locations: Tonopah Times-Bonanza, Whitney’s Book Shelf, Otteson’s Turquoise, A-Bar-L Western Store, Bumpers Towing, Scolari’s Food and Drug, Giggle Springs, Chamber of Commerce, and Les’ Gifts, as well as at the OES Craft Fair and Bazaar. Tickets are also available through Lisa Westerlund of M&K Enterprise.

The two lucky winners will be drawn at 9 p.m. at the Karaoke Contest and Dance on Saturday, May 23, at the Tonopah Convention Center. Winners need not be present at the drawing to claim their prize.

Tonopah Conversation Camp Stays!

The Nevada State Legislature on Tuesday morning answered once and for all the question of funding for the Tonopah Conversation Camp (TCC) for the next two years when the joint sub-committee closed the budget for the Department of Corrections with full funding restored to TCC. No further changes to the budget can be made.

The fight to keep the camp open, which services a large area of Central Nevada and includes Tonopah as well as many other rural communities, began last July when residents were first informed of the slated closure of the camp.

Jim Butler Days and the Nevada State Mining Championships

The Nevada State Championship Mining Competition begins at the Mining Park right after the Jim Butler Day Parade on Saturday morning, May 23, 2009. This will be a one day event featuring both professional and amateur competitions. This is a jackpot contest. Winners will receive cash awards. All are invited and everyone is encouraged to enter as a single or a team member. There are contests for adults and children alike.

The winners of these Nevada preliminary contests will vie for the World Championship titles to be held in Carson City after the October 31st Nevada Day Parade. These contests reflects the early day mining technique of drilling holes for dynamite charges in the mining process as well as clearing the overburden by shoveling the muck out to be loaded on ore cars and removed from the site.

The mining competitions are exciting and fast moving. Competitions are held at the Tonopah Historic Mining Park on the hillside in back of the Mizpah Hotel. The mining park is open free of charge during Jim Butler Weekend. Bring the whole family. Make a weekend excursion into the past.

The Longest Auto Race Centennial

Nov. 2 Join us at the Tonopah Convention Center at 7 p.m. when Jeff Mahl gives a live, first person presentation “Bandits, Guns and Automobiles.” Jeff Mahl takes you back to the turn of the last century for this incredible adventure, just as he heard the saga from his great-grandfather George Schuster, Sr., driver and winner of the Great Auto Race of 1908. Come learn why Tonopah played such an important role in George Schuster’s winning of the race in the 1907 Thomas Flyer.

Admission is free and donations benefit the Tonopah Chamber of Commerce.

Nov. 3 Join us to watch the arrival of the vintage cars participating in the Longest Auto Race Centennial as they re-create the original New York – San Francisco route from the Great Auto Race of 1908. This will be the only re-enactment of the race route in the centennial year.

Tonopah’s Famed Bartlett House Undergoes Historic Renovation

TONOPAH, Nev. (Sept. 18, 2008) – The former home of Nevada’s famed divorce-granting judge, George A. Bartlett, becomes a construction site Oct. 9, 2008 as work begins on an 18-month project to restore it to its original glory. Gutted for architectural salvage by past owners, the renovation of the Bartlett House, located on Brougher Ave. between McQuillan and Stewart Street in Tonopah, Nev., will restore the craftsman-style mansion to as closely as possible resemble the original condition. Once complete, plans include opening the house for use as a bed and breakfast and using common areas for community gatherings and events.

The Bartlett House, inducted to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982, was the home of Judge Bartlett before he was elected a U.S. Congressman for the state of Nevada in 1907. After returning from Washington D.C., Bartlett became a District Attorney and District Court Judge in Washoe County, Nev., where he presided over more than 20,000 divorce cases during Reno’s boom in the 1920s and 30s. The home has changed ownership several times and is now in the hands of Tonopah resident Michael Burnaroos who purchased the property and is spearheading the renovation.

“This project has the support of the entire community behind it and local enthusiasm continues to grow,” said Denise Nelson, chairman of the Tonopah Chamber of Commerce. “Tonopah is called the ‘Queen of the Silver Camps,’ and the restoration of the Bartlett House puts another jewel in our crown. We are thrilled to kick off the project and once complete we anticipate that it will draw visitors to Tonopah and help renew the community’s enthusiasm for growth.”

Burnaroos, a retired construction worker, learned his trade from Norwegian craftsmen and will complete much of the work himself while staying on property. Using existing photographs, Burnaroos’ goal is to rebuild the house and maintain its historical integrity. The home’s massive stone-work, wood beams and shingle siding are well-documented in exterior images of the structure and will remain. However re-creation of the interior structure proves his challenge. Few images are currently available of the home’s interior, except those of its unique twin staircase, and Burnaroos is searching for anyone that may have old photos from the house’s heyday in the early 1900s.

The darkest skies in the United States look down on Tonopah making it the best stargazing location in the country, according to USA Today.

Tonopah’s Historic Mining Park collects, restores and displays mining artifacts on-site and in the park’s original buildings. Located atop the original mining claim that started the town’s silver rush, the mining park offers self-guided walking tours and the chance to go underground and explore the over 100 acres of claims that put Tonopah on the map as “Queen of the Silver Camps.”

Take a “hard hat” tour of The Bartlett House, led by owner Michael Burnaroos, and see firsthand the current state of the house and planned renovations.

A staple of the town since 1961, mine tours offer the chance to dig in mine tailings for turquoise, which the owners will then set into sterling silver and gold jewelry for the fortunate collector.
