I am going to try some new patterns in the next couple of days. I love the corset and the top with the ribbons as sleeves. The middle one has a cute capelet that I am going to make and I bought some black velvet to make it this weekend. It is so cute and has a bat inspired look to it. I will post photos on here when I am done with something.

Sorry about that. I have been so busy with so many different things. I have been sewing up a storm. I have saved so much money by sewing all of my new summer wardrobe and my sons also. It is fun to do this also.

I have been trying to make some more handcrafted runes that I plan on selling.

I have been gardening in my backyard and have a really great herb garden growing back there. I love to just sit in it and weed. It is so calming to work in a garden and to get dirty.

INCENSE - Information on how to make

I have two books on the subject of making incense, one of which is useful and
the other of which is occasionally amusing. The books are:

The useful one: Smith, Steven R. _Wylundt's Book of Incense_, York Beach, ME:
Samuel Weiser, Inc. 1989, 300 pp.

The amusing one (which will probably be easier to find, alas):
Cunningham, Scott. _The Magic of Incense, Oils & Brews_, St. Paul, MN:
Llewellyn Publications, 1986, 165 pp.

There are two kinds of incense: that which will burn by itself, and that which
won't. The self-burning kind is the stuff formed into cones, sticks, and so
forth. Non-self-burning incense is easy: mix up whatever herbs please you and
drop it on a hot coal. You can buy self-igniting charcoal which was made to be
used with incense at either occult shops or ecclesiastical supply shops. This
charcoal has saltpeter mixed in it, so that when you hold a match to it, the
saltpeter burns and provides enough of a start for the charcoal to catch. You
get a line of sparks marching across the coal. I think it's really neat, but
then I'm a bit of a pyromaniac. Put the coal in a heatproof dish and drop herbs
on it. The coals usually burn for about an hour. You can get large clouds of
smoke this way. On the other hand, the charcoal is both messy and dangerous.
It really does get hot. I am very careful to put it in something that will
contain both the fire and the heat. The best solution I've found so far is a
good-sized stone ashtray with a trivet underneath.

Self-burning incense is tricky. I've had reasonable success with the recipes in
Smith, but not with creating my own recipes. Do not follow Cunningham's
instructions for making self-burning incense. He has no clue what he's talking
about. Use his recipes that please you, and ignore his techniques.

From this point on, unless I say otherwise, I'm referring to self-burning
incense. Incense requires the following ingredients:

- Aromatic substance: the stink-pretty. This can be whatever you want.

- Base: a neutral or pleasant smelling substance that burns easily. Fine sawdust
is easy to get and cheap. Sandalwood works beautifully, but costs more.
- Potassium Nitrate: aka saltpeter. To make sure it burns.

- Binder: glue, to hold it together. Smith has a list of necessary features,
such as 'must not revert to powder when dry'. Gum tragacanth is best.

- Liquid: to make the binder become sticky. Usually water.

One of the tricks to incense is getting the correct amount of saltpeter. Like
I said above, I haven't figured out this one, so I do it by the book. The other
trick is to get all the ingredients evenly mixed together. Here's the secret to
doing this: mix the binder in with the base and aromatics, and dissolve the
saltpeter in the liquid. This is why I tell you not to follow Cunningham's
methods. He tells you to do exactly the opposite (saltpeter with dry
ingredients, binder with liquid). I tried it his way before I found Smith, and
it Does Not Work.

I strongly recommend Scott Cunningham's Incenses, Oils and Brews from Llewellyn
Publications. Scott has recipes for a wide variety of incenses for various
purposes. Most of these are for powder incenses to be used with charcoal but I
believe he also talks about how to make cones. I prefer using charcoal myself,
as you don't need to include any binders or other extraneous ingredients in the
incense. Good luck! Making your own incense is very rewarding and the end
product tends to have better energy than store-bought.

If you prefer making your own cone or stick incense, I suggest using gum
tragacanth, which can be obtained from most herb suppliers.

Start with a tablespoon of the gum and a large (12 ounces) glass of water. Add
a bit at a time until it is a stiff, paste-like consistency. Add to this your
powdered herbs and/or oils. Remember that your oils will have a stronger odor,
so adjust accordingly.

For stick incense, get some joss sticks from an incense store and simply dip
them in the mixture.

To create cones, make the mixture thicker and shape by hand.

Keep your mixture covered with a damp cloth, else it turns into a hard, unusable
lump.

Prosperity is more than the sum total of what is in you bank account; who you are and what you have accomplished is far more important that what you own. In the end, the only things you take with you are your honor, the love you shared and the wisdom you have learned. That doesn't mean you can set aside the mundane needs of life and go meditate on a hill--even then you have to eat. What it does mean that you need to take responsibility for your decisions and your life. Casting spells and doing rituals can help, but I have yet to meet a rich witch. The best way to insure a successful, prosperous life is to remain in school and get a good education. In doing so, you'll find a source of satisfaction as well as being able to live comfortably.

If you want a new job, do the ritual, but also check the want ads, fill out applications and all the things you would normally need to do on a mundane level to get a job. You can ask for the winning lottery numbers, but don't start spending the money until the check is not only in your hand but has cleared in the bank.

As with all magic, what you send out is what you will receive back. If you help others, you will receive aid when you need it. Whatever aspect of your life that you feed energy to will be the strongest. If you feed the fear of loss and the poverty mind set that is what the universe will expand; however, if you keep your focus on your blessings, being able to share them and be confident you will always be provide for, the universe will increase that energy as well. Being able to release the society taught belief of limited resources is the biggest challenge all of us have to face. From every corner, the message is that there is not enough for all--not enough food, energy, money or resources for everyone to have an equal share. The messages is that you have to fight for what you want, disregarding the needs and rights of others for they are the enemy competing for the scarce blessings. If you feel this way, the whole universe will not be enough to fill you or make you feel safe. However, by releasing the fear and being open to the miracles of the universe, you will find that miracles happen everyday and that there is indeed enough for all to live well and be safe.

After all the rituals have been done and the candles have been burned out, the most effective prosperity spells are the ones that come under the heading "Random Acts of Kindness". The simple things we do for one another, without expecting anything return, are the most powerful magic. True charity is anonymous; it expects nothing in return. It is giving change at the check out when the person in front of you is a little short. It is taking meals or offering rides to someone in need. It is taking the time to smile at someone simply because you care that they have a little joy in their lives. Praying for peace is great, but taking the time to clean up a roadside is prosperity in action; not only do you get some fresh air and sunshine, but also you make the world a little better just by cleaning up the trash. The Hows and Whys of Altar Tools

So there you are, a beginner to Wicca, and you ask yourself, "Gee, what are all these Wicca supplies for anyway? What am I going to do with Altar Tools?" Those are good questions, since we are in a religion where there aren't many seminaries to teach Priests and Priestesses what's what, and what special church supply store they need to go to so they can purchase the right chalice or vestment.

What Altar Tools do you need, anyway? What Wiccan supplies do you need to be a "real Witch?" And how do you remain "non fluffy" while doing this?

Here is a quick primer on Altar Tools and Wicca Supply. Just the basics, of course.

Athame: Beginner Witches always have trouble pronouncing this word. It is pronounced ah' thuh may. Or, you can just call it that big ole Wicca knife. Nobody will be upset with you. You can buy many different types of athames, and since it will be your own personal Wiccan tool, you can tell those who might not like a nice wooden athame and say that the only "real athame" is a metal one with a blade that looks like it came out of Mad Max, that they can eat your Wiccan shorts. The athame is generally used to assist with casting a circle. Since you don't use it to cut anyone, and you only brandish it to look cool (unless some naughty Wicca haters are hanging around your circle making threats), you can buy any type you desire.

Athames are also used to signify the God in the Great Rite.

Bell: Now why would any Wiccan need a bell? Is it the "dinner bell?" No! It's the Altar Bell. And why does a Wiccan need an Altar Bell? As you should know, sound is very important during ritual. One learns to "vibrate" and "intone" with your voice, which helps the Gods to hear you. Same thing with an Altar Bell. The nice tones of a quality Altar Bell will let the Gods know that you would like an audience, please. The Bell is also used to cleanse energies at the end of a ritual.

Cauldron: You will find that most Wiccans LOVE cauldrons, especially cast iron ones and use them for many different things, some ritual, some not. They are most often used as vessels to hold lighted charcoal to burn incense, but they can also be used to make herbal remedies, or simply to cook chili.

Chalice: The Chalice signifies the Mother Goddess and is used to hold water on your Altar during ritual. The Chalice can be anything from a paper cup to a gaudy ornate jewel encrusted one. The Goddess doesn't get upset with you for not buying the solid gold chalice. A beautiful silver or stoneware one will do just fine :-)

Offering Bowls: Having a nice set of offering bowls on the Altar is a "good thing." How else will you hold the element of Earth? Offering bowls can be any type at all, from beautiful hand made jeweled ones, to little black scrying altar bowls, to the proverbial paper cup. As with all things Wiccan, it's your choice.

Altar Cloths: An Altar cloth is essential to a "well dressed Altar." It also protects the Altar from candle drips or other stains. Even experienced Wiccan practitioners find MANY candle drips after a ritual. Know that your Altar cloth WILL get drips. It is good if it is machine washable. You CAN buy that beautiful gold wrapped Altar cloth, but the first time the chalice full of wine falls, or the Mother Goddess candle drips red wax, you won't be a "happy fun Witch."

Wands: A wand is another item that you can use in circle casting, or in any other ritual where you wish to direct and focus your energy. Magickal wands are wands that you choose (either purchased or made....since Kestra must stay away from sharp objects, her wands are purchased), and charge with your own personal energies. Magickal wands can be metal, wood, plastic, or any kind of material you desire, but Kestra prefers wood. Wicca, the Earth, wood, you know.... that sort of thing. Different woods have different magickal uses.

Altar tools and Wicca supplies are very personal choices. If you know WHY you are making the choices you make, such as, "I want to use only white candles for this particular ritual because I feel that they will be appropriate" or "I must have a black offering bowl because I feel that only black should hold the Earth element" then that choice is a good one. Do not purchase tools or supplies because others tell you those are the things you "must have." Look sideways at any who tell you that there is only one "correct" chalice, one "correct" cauldron, or one "correct" athame. They are all choices, and personal choices at that.

How Signs, Symbols, and Colors Can Enhance Your Magick Energy

Remember, you don't need anything external to do Magick. The Magick is inside of you.

But, especially when you are just beginning, certain things can increase your desired effects of Magick (in very big ways).

This is because you are able to draw on the energies added by external tools (which each are imbued with their own energies). More importantly, you draw on the added belief these tools add to your subconscious mind.

Let's start with color - one of the most basic of energies that you can incorporate into your Magick.

The use of color in your spells can effect the outcome in two different ways.

First, are the Magick properties of the colors themselves. Each color reflects light in a different way, which is composed of a different energy that will have different effects on your Magick.

Here are a list of the colors you can use in your spells, and the type of Magick and how using each of them will effect your spells:

Black - use to ban negativity, in working with that which is hidden and in need of being revealed, in meditations on major life changes, and in connecting with Goddess/Mother energy.

Purple - use for psychic development, personal power, spirituality, prosperity, and connection with spirit world, success.

Green - use for growth, fertility/productivity, financial prosperity, earth connection, rejuvenation, and success.

Dark Green - use against greed and overly ambitious influences.

Bright Green - attracts love, social status, and fertility

Orange - use for energy, growth, and for drawing things toward you (as in drawing wealth toward you in ritual).

Blue - use for spirituality, wisdom, peace, harmony, and well-being.

Light Blue - use for serenity, peace, and stress reduction, meditations.

Dark Blue - use for prophetic dreams, need for laughter, increase of something.

Red - use for courage, love/passion, Father energy, health, and strength.

Gray - use for meditation, neutralizer, creates confusion.

Pink - use for romantic love, friendship, hope, rest, and relief from stress.

Gold - use for God, sun/masculine energy, and prosperity.

Indigo - use for deep meditations, stopping situations (such as gossip).

Brown - use for finding lost things, sometimes earth energy, concentration and study, prosperity, decision-making, and balance.

Magenta - use for higher frequencies, draws intense spiritual power for fast action, promotes spiritual healing.

Second, colors evoke different feelings and emotions within YOU. And the emotions they create can be different for each person. For example, maybe the color Red brings emotions of fear into you (for one reason or another). For another person, maybe the same color red evokes emotions of excitement and passion.

Simply do not use a color if it brings negative emotion to you, or none at all. Use the colors that deliver strong positive emotions of happiness, love, adventure, and excitement!

So use the specific Magick energies of colors above, and also use colors that bring strong positive emotions into your heart for spells filled with intense power.

seven dimes
quart jar with screw-on lid
bay leaf

Write your need on the paper and drop it into the jar. Take 7 dimes in your dominate hand and place them one by one into the jar.

As each one drops, visualize it multiplying into huge amounts and say:
"Toward this wish, the money grows
by leaps and bounds - it overflows.
Coins that jingle, coins that shine
Come to me now - you are mine."

Write your name on the bay leaf and drop it into the jar. Screw on the lid and place the jar where you can see it everyday, but where it is not visible to everyone who enters your home. Add a coin or two to the jar each day, and watch as money flows to you from unexpected sources. After you obtain the money you need, remove the paper and bury it outside.

Do this at the same time every night. During the waxing moon. Up until the full moon.
You will need a green and a white candle. Anoint the candles with money drawing oil. (You can buy some money drawing oil by clicking the buy it now button at the bottom of this post!) As you are anointing the candle think of your intention and desire to have money come to you. Set your candles on your altar. Saying:

"Money, money come to me
In abundance three times three
May I be enriched in the best of ways
Harming none on its way
This I accept, so mote it be
Bring me money three times three!"

Do this every night up until the full moon.

Also carry a lucky money bag with you that has a few coins, a 5 dollar bill , and a few herbs. anoint it all with lavendar oil and then close tightly. Keep this on your person at all times during the spell above up until the full moon.

The Solitary Practice of Wicca

For many, being a member of a coven is an indispensable part of being a Wiccan. But there are many who simply cannot be a part of a coven, or who choose not to. These people are known as solitary practitioners. While once almost unheard of, solitary practitioners are becoming more and more common.

Individuals may select a solitary path because of their own personality and religious preferences. For other, joining a coven may be difficult or impossible because of issues like distance or family/work commitments. There are others who have naturally fallen into a solitary practice by chance. Many people who are solitary Wiccans will practice that way throughout their life. For others, there may be periods of solitary practice and periods of being in a coven.

Being a solitary Wicca should not be mistaken for being anti-social or hiding one's religion. Solitaries often have fellow Wiccan friends, perhaps following different paths. They may attend group rituals or perform spells with others, but they are solitaries because the bulk of their practice is independent and they are not a part of an initiated group. The high priestess and/or priest act to initiate members in a coven. Because initiation requires another person to confer membership, a solitary Wicca cannot "self-initiate." Instead, they will perform a self-dedication to commit themselves to the Wiccan faith.

There has, in recent years, been some criticism of solitary Wicca. This is generally coming from the more conservative branches of Wicca. This is not, however, the view of most Wiccans, because Wicca is a constantly evolving faith. The solitary Wicca is a development that helps more people practice Wicca, and that is not a bad thing.

Some of the negative views that a solitary Wicca may encounter come from the notion that those who are not in a coven are not really taking being Wicca seriously. There are many people who call themselves Wiccan after reading a book or two, and claim to have a solitary practice. These people are often obeying a fad or going through a phase. However, their lack of commitment can be very frustrating to oath-bound Wiccans because it does in some way cheapen the religion and taint the outsider view of it.

The best remedy for this negative opinion is for this is for those who are committed to their solitary practice to be shining examples of how it is not necessary to be a member of a coven in order to be fully dedicated to the Wiccan religion.
